Thanks for the advice about cutting the top when it gets as high as you want it to grow! I've been growing mine in those tubs you get from Walmart for 6-7 $. It works great! I just drill holes in the bottom and a few on the sides. And the tub sits on the lid that came with it! I have 26 tomato plants growing right now! 😂 Every year, I tell myself I'm only going to plant a few... but I just get carried away! 🙄 Can't help it, I love growing tomatoes! As a container gardener tomatoes are great to grow, but have issues that you need to be aware of. You are right Scott, 5 gallons is the smallest pot you should use, I much prefer 7 gallon pots. If using 5 gallon pots you will have to really keep up on fertilizing. You will also have watering issues in a 5 gallon pot unless you are using a sip (hint hint) or can water twice a day, especially grow bags. Because of the watering issues you are more likely to get split/cracked fruit. Better than rocks is paper. I use old brown paper from grocery bags in non sips. It allows drainage, but keeps the water in the pot a little longer. As a side benefit it keeps the soil in the pot. As you said Scott you have to use potting mix. I have yet to find a mix that has enough calcium on its own to prevent blossom end rot. There are good fertilizers that provide it. But a cheap homemade calcium fix is a cup and a half of garden lime in a 5 gallon bucket , cover it with vinegar and let it bubble, when its done fill the bucket with water and mix it up. Each plant gets 2 cups of the solution. I usually do it and then reapply in a week. I dont even wait now to see the end rot start. But it will remove it from future tomatoes once applied.
@@jeanettehaygood4154 Usually only twice, the first time is when I see the first tomato, then a week later. Further applications wont hurt, but likely wont be needed. The fun for me is saving seeds from my store bought tomatoes. I found a thin wiry tomato plant growing out of an abandoned pot in the middle of winter. Brought it in and lo and behold it gave me lots of cherry tomatoes😊 I was hooked & one day, just for fun, I started placing the seeds in an occupied pot & was surprised when the plants grew😂. Now, usually after finishing up my sandwich, I find a couple seeds leftover on my plate. When they grew I transplanted the plants into their separate pots. I now have 3 (12") plants & about a dozen other seedlings popping up. Should be fun to see if they are Campari, Plum, Cherry, ROMA, or Beef Steak.😃

Very helpful for this newby gardener. I just started with 2 tomato plants in pots this year. I came across your site when looking for "tomatoes in black pots". I was told black nursery pots are not good for tomatoes because it gets too hot. I didn't hear anything about pots in this video, perhaps you already spoke about that? Many thanks.
I did temperature tests years ago on an old video. I painted some pots white and left some black. The difference in soil yep was around 10F. Not too significant.
I guess I put too much seeds in one pot. The stems are weak and lengthy and falling off when not held. I want to replant one stem deep in the soil but the stem is too weak. Can I cut the main stem half off or does it kill the plant?
You have the opposite problem to me [too much heat] I am in the UK and dont have enough heat. Too cold to plant out until May and killed by frost/not enough light in October. The only type I managed to grow outside [not in greenhouse] are the small cherry types [Tumbling Tom]
I diy my potting mix as it has gotten so expensive plus i dont want hardwood which can stunt growth & take nitrogen away from plant as the wood breaks down. Peat moss, compost, vermiculite, perlite & worm castings, granular fertilizer. Add lime esp for Tomatoes.
I just got a tomato plant I still have it in the pots that I bought it in so what do you do when you get tomato worms how do you kill tomato worms please answer me back I was going through the videos and I came across yours so I learned something tonight about tomatoes
I tried this last year, but I guess the heat was so bad that none of the tomatoes would ripen until fall when they are cold off so I save the seeds and try again this year and put them someplace else.
Hello Scott, I just found your channel today. I am in zone 10a and mostly do my gardening in pots. I have alway been a learn as you go type of gardener I have also have a great success with my tomatoes this year. My question is, do you mulch the top pf your tomato containers? Also do you do any seed saving from your tomatoes? If you do i would love to know how You do it. Thanks for being on YT.
I do mulch containers, it is helpful especially in summer. I use whatever I have on hand, usually dry grass clippings mixed with oak leaves (we get a year's worth each spring) but also I've used commercial mulch. I prefer shredded hardwood. I do save seeds sometimes, if the tomato was a good one. I'll do a video on it, or at least include in in an upcoming Q&A. Thanks for the idea!
@@ScottHead Oh that's fantastic, Thank you so much for doing this. I just spent the last few weeks trying to save seeds from my lettuce mix. I'm in Orlando, FL and it's been very hot so it bolted. Very much appreciated Scott!
I have a question regarding tomato cages in hot weather. I am growing them on my balcony, the cage gets really hot, will the plant suffer any form of burn from a heated cage? Or do I change to one that is not made of metal?
Hi! My name Patricia, I’m growing tomatoes from seeds, what do you think of growing tomatoes in a bucket with pvc pipe for self watering? Also I purchased metal stakes but I do t know if they can be use with the buckets, last year I did some with bamboo and some with tomato’s cages but it wasn’t effective, they didn’t hold. Do you recommend using metal stakes with twine to hold the tomatoes plant with buckets? Please advise. Thank you!
Yes, you can use metal stakes and twine, that is one of many trellising methods. The PVC self-watering pipe is a common trick many gardeners like. Hope you have a great harvest!
Hi Scott, thank you for this great video am in Uganda Africa growing Oxheart tomatoes. However am facing a challenge of flowers yellowing dropping and dropping off. Kindly advise
Last season did you have alot of stinkbugs and leafbugs on your tomatoes? Have you seen any so far? Last season i was attacked by them didnt get as many tomatoes
First time growing tomatoes. I use 5 gallon pails that I already had, how many drainage holes do I need and where, right in the bottom or in the side so there’s some water standing on the bottom?
Hi😃 a quick general question.... I am using my garden soil that last year my tomatoes had some blossom end rot. I used tums then and all went great. Could I used tums as a preventative measure and add them to my young tomato plants early on? Thank you.
My hybrid beefsteak tomatoe has curling leaves, what do I do to save it? I live I’m 9b area and it is in a 10 gallon pot. Do I still leave it in the hot sun all day?
Some tomatoes curl just as a normal matter of course. If it looks stressed its not the sun exposure, but it could be watering issues. Under-watering or over-watering. Stick a finger in the soil or dig down 3-4 inches, if it is bone dry, give it some water. If there is any trace of moisture, leave it alone.
I prune once a week on vigorous growers, they can get away from you if you don't. I water every other day in the height of summer if its needed. if its not too hot I just water when the soil is dry down to three inches or so. Usually the rain is enough until high summer.
Hi, my name is Bruce I live up in Ontario Canada. Not that that makes a difference for my question. I planted 2 different kinds of Tomatoes in the house under a light, (one plant for a 4" pot) the light was a little high, plants were spindly, found out that the lights need to be lower. Rooted the plants up a bit and planted them deep to increase the roots and prevented them from falling over, Wow! These plants took off and most grew to 8 or 9". All of a sudden they all completely stopped growing I mean stopped! (Side note: they were not all that tall in case one thinks maybe they outgrew their pots). The leaves were turning over, curling up and the bottoms of the leaves were turning red. Over the course of 2 to 3 weeks I lost some small ones but the large ones did not die. Finally after about 3 weeks I noticed a few little new growths happening in the crotch between two branches. Then I got brave and cut all the dormant leaves off because even though the were not growing they were still using nutrients. Now you are up to the present and the new little growths are turning into branches. The question, 2 part: What on earth happened and am I wasting my time with these? Now, you must know that I started the seed in 4" used pots and I used 1 year old garden soil that was in my garage that my wife uses in here flower gardens. Thx Bruce
Something stressed the plants, not sure what, perhaps the lights are not sufficient, maybe there was a watering inconsistency. Tomatoes are tough so give them some more time and care and see what they do.
Do you start tomatoes in September? That is the beginning of the second tomato growing season in Florida Grow Zone 9a. Do you have any recommendations for tomato varieties to start in September? I've been growing hybrid tomatoes bred with a lot of disease and crack resistance. I may take on something different and try Cherokee Purple ( hierloom) with an olla in the 30 gallon container and save the seeds.
I'm in Florida 10b, Lee County. Only been growing two years, so I don't have Scott's experiencs. Had success with Floradade, Homestead, Sun Gold cherry, Carbon, and Bonnie Best. This year we put 40% shade cloth over the beds/containers and the health of the tomato plants over last year is marked.
@@ScottHead Thanks, I planted 4 different tomato plants in pots. Only one plants seems like it didn't like the move. My first time growing them in containers. Can't do the direct in ground gardening anymore...
Sorry, diagnosing stuff like this is difficult without seeing the plant and knowing the growing circumstances is almost impossible. There is a good book called “what’s wrong with my plant” that is helpful.
I know what you mean, I have experienced that myself. And I don't know either although I have seen yesterday on a video that the lack of calcium in the soil I believe it was or some of the mineral I forgot which one it was., but with this information you make it do some research and find out for sure and the inconsistency of water distribution I'll keep that in mind also good luck❤

Seed saving video is coming out in about an hour.
Very good ❤
How hot is it? Tomatoes will drop blossoms if it is too hot or if they do not get pollinated.
@@ScottHead Thank you for the reply and here in Uganda Kampala it's 20°c now. The current season is unpredictable
I'd just drill 5-7 holes around the side near the bottom.
@@ScottHead Thanks
Hi😃 a quick general question.... I am using my garden soil that last year my tomatoes had some blossom end rot. I used tums then and all went great. Could I used tums as a preventative measure and add them to my young tomato plants early on? Thank you.
You could but the issue is inconsistent watering that makes calcium difficult for the plant to take in. Just be sure to water ver regularly.
@@ScottHead Thank you and Best Wishes!
I use crushed egg shells forever calcium
When is the best month for growing tomatoes
Depends on where you live but typically in the spring and early summer.
What do you use to deter weeds around your tomatoes
Mulch. Any kind.
Just found your channel..... VERY helpful............Where exactly are you from? I'm also in 9a. South Louisiana....
Welcome! I'm between Houston and Galveston in Texas.
I’m growing beef steak tomatoes and parks whopper both in huge pots, how often to water and do I prune them? This is my first time growing
It's my first time too and would like for someone to answer your questions
I prune once a week on vigorous growers, they can get away from you if you don't. I water every other day in the height of summer if its needed. if its not too hot I just water when the soil is dry down to three inches or so. Usually the rain is enough until high summer.
I transplanted a tomatoe plant which was fine some what large didnt know you should buy small but now the leaves are yellow what can i do
Too many reason that tomatoes get yellow leaves to be able to answer. Is it getting fertilized?
Do you uproot the tomato plant after bearing fruit
If it is a determinate, yes, if it is an indeterminate, I let it produce fruit until the weather kills it.
What about mixing the potting soil with the top soil? Or Black Kow?
I avoid topsoil for growing in but if you needed to get rid of some you could add it into potting soil in small amounts. Black Kow is fine.
Good day what can you put on the plant to keep away the white flies on slug from destroying the plant
Definitely go bigger than 5 gallons/18 L for tomato plants!
The question, 2 part:
What on earth happened and am I wasting my time with these?
Now, you must know that I started the seed in 4" used pots and I used 1 year old garden soil that was in my garage that my wife uses in here flower gardens.
Thx
Bruce
Something stressed the plants, not sure what, perhaps the lights are not sufficient, maybe there was a watering inconsistency. Tomatoes are tough so give them some more time and care and see what they do.
Can I add another plant in the bucket like basil?
Yes but just watch out for overcrowding
We have had so much rain, our tomatoes are wilting dropped fruit and bloom rot,,is there anything I can do
Not really, you just have to wait for the next flush of fruit and hope the weather has not been extreme either way.
@@banananookfoodforest49 Thanks. I didn't know if anyone bothered with sunshade over tomatoes in Florida because of the humidity.
Is miracles grow ok to use on the tomato plants?
What is the best treatment for signs of transplant stress?
Just consistent care as you normally would and time. If you have done everything reasonably well so far the plants should perk up pretty soon.
@@ScottHead Thanks, I planted 4 different tomato plants in pots. Only one plants seems like it didn't like the move. My first time growing them in containers. Can't do the direct in ground gardening anymore...
@@ScottHead Thank you, the potted tomato plants are thriving and starting to produce fruit!
Update on my first time growing tomatoes in pots. The plants are the healthiest I have ever grown and producing a large amount!
The question I have is my tomato plant has black on the outer edges of the leaves. Do you happen to know the cause and if possible correction process.
Sorry, diagnosing stuff like this is difficult without seeing the plant and knowing the growing circumstances is almost impossible. There is a good book called “what’s wrong with my plant” that is helpful.
try black russian yummy
I am growing tomatoes in a pot that is still small how can I get it to grow. I planted it about three weeks ago.
How do you control rot root after tomato are good size. Then get brown bottoms.
Use limein soil are calcium nitrate
@@dannylainhart4320 thank you
Scott, no perlite or calcium??
Can I plant tomatoes in a fabric grow bag??
Yes, make it a big one though.
