    Excellent information on the through body handle or the screw into the body handle that I did not know, and this is after having fished for decades.

    I've been fishing since I was as a kid, I'm in my 50s now and I'd say your spot on with the comment on too large gear.it's the number one mistake I made over the years.
    It's the same with rods. Too heavy and you find how low your casting distance is.

    Congratulations! You're the first person I've seen on YT to point out that the numbering systems are not industry standard. That they may as well write small, bigger, even bigger on the spools. It's hardly surprising that beginners are so confused - they ask the Q on FB or Reddit about sizes and get a load of advice with no baseline or context. Long live the tackle shop. Nice one. Subbed.

      I would say if weight is not a factor, ask yourself if you really need all that extra line you will have to put on the larger reel. For me, 99% of the time, I would not. I am almost always in a boat if by chance I hooked this monster that was going to spool me, I can chase it down.

      Hard for me to recommend a rod as people like all kinds of actions and various rod actions work better in differing situations. The Falcon Coastal medium Gulf spin is one I like for under $100. I use the 7'6" medium action. A Daiwa BG reel is a tough one for around $100. The Okuma Azores Blue is good. Cadence Stout has a lot of drag for less than $75.

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  2 роки тому +1

      There really is no line rating for reels. They will show you how much of various lb test lines the spool can hold but that's it. My reel repair shop says many of the issues they repair come from people putting braid that will never break on reels that are too small and ruining the gears that were never meant to handle line that heavy.

      @@CaptChrisMyers i have some 40lb braided line and ive been trying to find a reel for that line. However it's been difficult since they rarely have any line rating info at all. • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  2 роки тому +1

      If you look at the reel specs, it should tell you how much line of various sizes the manufacturer thinks it will hold. Some still only put mono sizes on, some put braid on mono. Look here, for example, there is a whole chart and it shows the 4000 will hold 200yds of 40 braid. daiwa.us/products/bg-sw-spinning
      If they do not show braid sizes, be sure to see the mono equivalent size of the braid you are using.

      A 4000 size reel should be able to handle any pike. I was catching 50lb tarpon on a 4000 last week. Of course a less expensive reel has gears made from less durable metal but I routinely use a 1000 size $59 reel to catch saltwater fish and we have landed fish over 35lbs on them this year. • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  Місяць тому

      The weights you described are very heavy, much heavier that we would usually use from the beach here, Also in beach fishing here, many people try to cast farter and are actually casting well past most of the fish that are closer to the beach in the troughs. You would need braid that heavy with those weights. I would get at least a5 or 6000 size reel with that setup. Not so much to handle the fish you describe but the weight and the line.

    Thank you for the video. I'm seeing that I need less reel than I thought. I'm looking to do mostly shore fishing in MD and NJ from seawalls, jetties, around bridges, etc. targeting things like fluke, bluefish, stripers, black sea bass, weakfish, black drum. I might encounter a king mackerel, black drum, or striper that could be over 50lbs, but most other fish will be below 20lbs. So I'm not sure if I should go with a 3000 or 4000 series reel. And then I suppose a 7ft rod with a medium heavy action would be sufficient? I currently have a Penn Battle II 2000 series on a 6'6" medium fast action rod with 10lb braid that was originally intended for freshwater fishing. Could that be useful in a saltwater application, or is it just too light? Thanks!

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  2 роки тому +1

      For me, I would get a setup that is appropriate for the fish I catch the majority of the time, not the occasional giant I might get. A medium heavy rod is pretty stiff for 5-10lb fish. I can certainly catch them but it does not offer as much fun. I prefer medium or medium light with a smaller and lighter reel unless I have a need for a huge line capacity. I use 1000 size reels on ultralight rods routinely on my saltwater charters and clients have landed fish over 30 pounds on them. Of course, we are able to chase these large fish with a boat so i probably would not recommend trying for huge fish on ultralight gear from shore but it shoes that the tackle can handle them. Many people I see are using rods and reels far to large for the fish they are targeting.

    • @erric288
      @erric288 2 роки тому

      Okay, so if most of the time I'm targeting fluke and other smaller fish sub 20lbs, should I be able to get away with the 2000 series I have on the 6.6ft medium rod I already have?have? Should I respool it with heavier lb braid or will I not have enough line? What is the minimum number of yards required for shore/pier/jetty type fishing? Thanks again for your help!

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  2 роки тому +1

      Each reel can hold a different amount of line so i do not know how much braid yours will hold. I would want the spool to be full . A 2000 should be able to hold around 150 yds of 10lb and 140 yds of 15lb. Use more than 15lb braid and your casting distance will suffer. There is even a noticeable difference from 10 to 15. Fish under 20lb should easily be able to be stopped within that distance. 150yds is a long distance and means it is a huge fish or the drag is way too loose.

      I would still need more details to give you an opinion. Unless you are targeting fish over 30lbs consistently, you do not need a 4000 or 6000 reel in most cases. If you are targeting fish from shore only and need extra line capacity, maybe a 4000. I use a 6000 size for offshore or large tarpon.

      Since the sizes do not have any set standard, I don't know that they measure anything. They can just give you a rough idea of the reel's size but, as I showed, they do not always conform. Looking at the spool's line capacity is probably a better measure of size.

      That would depend on the average size of the fish you are targeting. If they are 10lbs and under, a 2500 size is all you need. If they are larger fish, a 4000 would be more appropriate.

      Few weeks ago I got 2 kastking megatrons for stripers, got the 2000 and the 6000, both fit my ugly stick striper good, one is obviously for bigger fishing conditions the other for smaller... the 2000 made quick work of several stripers so far from barely-keepers to a nice 39” hen. I got the 6000 because it has more drag lbs, and will fish easier the sfbay and the ocean, it also fits good on my 10’ surf rod so I can use it on that too. I’m not a paid spokesperson for them, but I am loving the megatron a lot. Aluminum frame and braid ready spool.

    I was gifted a shimano stradic FL 4500. I fish all bait casting combos and don’t Know much about spinning reels. What would be the right power/action rod and braided line size would you pair that reel with? I fish freshwater for bass and get into striped bass twice a year when they make there migratory run.

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  3 роки тому +1

      The rod power and line size should directly relate to the weight of the fish/bait/and structure. For average fish under 10lbs in open water a medium light with 10lb would be my choice. larger fish or heavier cover could demand 15 or 20lb braid. A 4500 hold a lot of line and you may want to fill the spool part way with mono instead of 350yds of 10lb.

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  3 роки тому

      Depends on what size fish you are targeting the most. If I am occasionally catching 20+lb fish from a boat with a 2500, no problem. if consistently, then I want larger gears to handle the stress. For average fish 10lbs and under a 2500 works fine for me and it is lighter with less line needed to fill it. A 4000 will work for those fish but it has lots of line that will never see light and it is overkill. 30yrs ago, i thought I needed 4000s. now i fish with 1000,2000, and 2500 the most.

    Does length of rod come into the equation? Say a 6foot, to 10 foot.. can you use same 2500-3000 reel?
    For the handles that screw in, they are left OR right reels.. ones that go all the way through, they are left and right yeah? So info should be available online before purchase. Am i right?

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  2 роки тому

      The only time it would matter is some rods do not have reel seats large enough. The reel seat size is not standard among manufacturers. I have had some 5000 reels that would not fit on a rod when other would. The length should not factor into your decision.

  • @paullobwein1632
    @paullobwein1632 3 роки тому

    First time watching your videos. Loved the explanation of choosing. Simple practical explanation. I do have a question though. If you had a rod that’s rated 10-15 kilo does that get factored into the equation? Or does the the reel come first? Hmm chicken or egg question maybe?

    • @CaptChrisMyers
      @CaptChrisMyers  3 роки тому +2

      I would not be too concerned about the rod's rating. The size of the fish and line you are using would be more important to me. If you are targeting fish that size i would probably go with a 4000 size reel or maybe even a 5000 if they are 15k and up.

    What is your thought of a 4000 Vanford on a ML bass rod with 15 lb braid and 8 lb flourocarbon leader?
    It is a light reel... it should cast farther than a 2500 due to line being closer to the spool lip... gears are stronger... drag is better...
    Is a stronger drag a bad thing if it is set light for 6 lb line?
    Is the only disadvantage the extra weight?
    I'd fill the spool with backer, then top it off with 100 yds of 10 or 15 lb braid. So this would reel line in quickly also.
    Please explain the negative other than weight.

      You probably do not need a reel that large for those fish. I routinely use a 2500 size for most of my saltwater inshore fishing. Unless you have a lot of docks or heavy vegetation, 10lb line will be fine as well. I do not think you will get any noticeable casting distance with the reel size, Line size is more important as well as how much line you put on the spool. A larger reel would be heavier and should make it less challenging to reel in the fish. Other than that, they are about the same.

No larger than 4 k especially if casting a lot keep the weight down

      I use 2500 reels for the average redfish. Have caught plenty over 20lbs on 2500 and 3000 reels. I use 4000 reels for 20-50lb tarpon and a 6000 for 100lb fish. Unless you are routinely targeting redfish 20lbs and up, there is no need for reels that large.
