Awesome to see somebody who respects the sport and the wildlife. There is no need to hurt the fish especially when you are fishing to catch and release
@Cole Johnston where we live, the law requires to release any caught fish less than 20 cm in length. So, people do fish to eat but still have to catch and release a lot.

Get a good pair of O ring pliers and a box of locking O rings..most of my hard baits have very sharp hooks I changed and many have a Buck tail jig on the end
I used the circle hook for the first time last weekend and caught 3 hardhead catfish, one 22 inches, my biggest yet. I am now sold on the circle hook, much better for catch and release. Thanks for your awesome content.
I drive my elder fishing buddies crazy with all my questions but, being a newbie, I learn so much. It's totally worth asking. Mostly trial and error works for me.
I've tied the same knot my whole life on everything I've ever tied on (line to line not included) and I've never lost a fish from a knot coming out, and I've caught a lot of fish, I don't even know what it's called either, trilene knot maybe. The best knot is the one you can tie blindfolded in a snowstorm and have complete confidence in. Good video, love your channel!
I've never liked treble hooks for all the reasons you listed I've loved fishing since I was five and you've changed the way I'll fish having the info on how to change out the treble hooks properly instead of trial and error. People who think fishing is simple are terribly misinformed. Vids like this make me fall in love with fishing all over again. Subbed!
Awesome video with a great positive message. If there is any little bit of information i can share is that switching out treble hooks is a great idea. I do a lot of bass fishing and i replace my spooks, rattle traps, rooster tails, and crankbaits with inline hooks. Hook up ratio is less but its worth it to be able to lip a bass with out getting hooked myself! Stay safe folks! Tight lines!
Thank you for the helpful information. Beginner to saltwater fishing here. I love how you explain and make it as simple as possible to learn. I have used the trebble hook on spinners for freshwater. Not a fan of the trebble. I have had a bigger fish take 2 of the hooks and it wasn't a fun time getting the hooks out.
Great videos you make. 04:44 I watched a few videos on how to change to inline single hooks. It is suggested that back hook should face the tail away from the front hook. Keep up the good work.
Omgosh THANK YOU!! I just ran across your video! I love you! I learned so much . Never had anyone to teach me about fishing . I just used whatever I had. Now I know better. God bless.
Nice to see someone speak something with good reasoning. I made the same choices with hooks many years ago, as well as a couple others... There is one thing with this video, & that is when replacing the trebles on a lure, the in-line hooks should be put on so that the point is towards the rear of the lure. when pulled through the water, lures with the point towards the back will simply bump over any obstacle, while they will snag into things when the point faces forward as you did in this video.
When replacing trebles on lures you may need to add weight to replace what you have removed for balance . This can be done by using Storm suspend strips (I think they are called in the states) also remember a sizes in singles are different to trebles. There are charts available out there to make the job easier. We also have a semi- circle hook here in UK, it’s slightly easier to get a worm on. 👍
Thanks so much for your videos. I haven’t fished since I was a kid and don’t remember any of the basics. Now it’s time for me to teach my kid and I felt overwhelmed with all the choices. I’ve watched so many of your videos and now feel confident to head out and have a good time. Thank you!
I remember the barbless hooks I used. Those are great to use on catch and release. Very challenging to keep the fish on during the fight. And of course much less pain and damage to the fish when removing the hook. Just use a plier and pinch the barb in to make your own barbless hook.
I'm going to replace the trebles on a bunch of my lures with barbless singles. It's mostly to protect the many undersized pike you catch here, whether you want to or not. For such fierce predators, pike are kind of delicate and their huge mouths are prone to really serious hook extraction problems. Also, I troll a bit in some weedy places, so singles shouldn't harvest so many weeds. I would rather miss a strike than kill a fish.
I use lure religiously. And my set up is inlines with the tail hook up and belly hook facing forward. But it's all personal preference because that works for me but not for someone else
Really liking your channel. As a beginner rod user, I have learned so much and still learning from you guys. Question for you, I find it more comfortable to cast with my right hand, switch to my left hand and reel with my right. Should I be trying to learn to reel with my left or is comfort and normalcy more important?
I read that whether you’re right or left handed, that’s the hand that’s supposed to hold the rod and you use your other hand to reel 🙂. I just learned this a few days ago myself 💀
Hey just wanted to thank you. Keep up the good work! My 6 year old son and i been trying to fish for 3 years still haven’t had any luck. I’m at the point where I don’t care and still have fun going out! I’m learning a TON form your channel. I have no doubt we will catch one soon.

Hi skipper I love watching yo videos I have 3 fishing poles and have circle hooks I'm learning new stuff from you thanks a lot I grew up on fishing 🎣 and it's a hobby for meh
The other day I hooked a trout on a rooster tail with a treble hook. I got the fish with all 3 hooks on the upper and lower parts of its mouth and I felt horrible. Not a big fan of treble hooks either. I also didnt know about the circle hook. I feel dumb now lol cause I've been trying to set the hook instead of letting the fish run. I switched to circle hooks because I kept gut hooking fish even with my line tight and keeping my fishing pole in hand. I watched a video about gut hooked fish and that it's best to cut the hook because the fish will dispel it and live most of the time. I'm glad I watched this. Trebles are a necessary evil for soft baits like cheese, dough balls and such. Not that I target catfish that often but if I do I'll probably be using treble hooks. Also I use a lot of older lures for bass just because I inherited them, old lipless crankbaits, topwater plugs, old wooden rapalas, I leave the trebles on. For other rigs I do like to switch the lures to an inline hook especially since I got into saltwater fishing, and for surf/pier fishing its usually circle hooks or ringed live bait hooks for live lining.
i was thinking that i mostly use a treble when using softer baits. they do help hold the bait on. maybe we can get a video on how to use soft baits with different hooks?
Hi, my name is Neville, and I'm from South Africa. I love watching your clips, especially the way in wich you catch Blue fish. Here in SA we call them Shad.
I have used a treble hook on spinners and it takes me 15 to 30 sec to remove. With a standard hook I have spent up to 3 minutes removing the hook. I feel that a treble hook is easily removed from the fish.
Ive been fishing for years and always have an open mind .your video was very informative as what you were aiming for.like you said for beginner's.im sure the makers of treble hooks dont like the comment.but i either take them off to or take the barbs off by bending them with pliers or fileing them smooth.good job.
I really appreciate the informative video. You are a good teacher 😉👍. Subscription coming your way. And I appreciate your insight on the treble hook . I am going to replace all my lures today.
Good to know about that in-line hook for lures! I’ve always just clipped points or replaced with a standard j-hook, never knew there were hooks specifically for that purpose. Last time I used a treble was for catfishing and it left too big of a hole in its mouth. Trebles are okay for catch and cook but I now try to avoid using them for catch and release. Best ones I’ve found are regular worm hooks for bass, and j-hooks and circles for catfish. Another tip is to pinch the barb points down to make more of a “bump” shape than an actual barb for catch and release. Thanks for this vid man!
I hooked my self in the knee when diving with a friend and I came up put my knee on the paddle boat and the hook when right into me and my dad came back because he just left and took it out with bad pliers but I still when fishing didn't catch Nothing tho it was fun

Thanks for the information I really like the fact you can switch them out because on vacation for a joke I just dropped a Berkeley flickershad and a baby bass decided to hit it I don’t know why but I’m not even sure if he lasted a day but now I know I can replace the lure hooks thank you
Just get pliers for trebles. Trebles don't gut hook & they usually stick right in the lip. If you are new to fishing don't be turned away by "danger" to the fish or yourself using them. I use them with 90% of the time for bass rarely screwing a fishes mouth. J hooks on the other hand have went straight through the eye or skull of many fish ive caught. Choosing hooks is more of an experience/preference & location thing. Like if you're fishing a grassy pond or a high concentration of seaweed trebles wouldn't be ideal.
I didn’t start switching all my trebles until I started fishing saltwater exclusively ... I was pulling up fish in a ball of hooks and line because they seemed to be a lot more aggressive then bass ... the would have one hook in the mouth and one in the tail bent in half ... it was a huge pain ... in lines for me 😬👍🏼👍🏼
@@lendog725 calling me wrong isn't the best route for conversation. I posted this due to my experiences with treble hooks. Only once have i had a smallmouth that caught it's body hooked. I've been using trebles since i started fishing & 9/10 the back treble is hooked in the mouth while the other(s) are loose. So from experience i have had a smooth run with trebles. Your experiences are different which is fine. You don't have to use them.
@@rdo6566 yes, it's a preference & experience type deal. The problem i see when trebles cause unnecessary harm is when someone sets the hook as they would a j hook.
My tackle only has circle hooks and j hooks but I never use them. I had the same question when I started fishing.keep up your amazing work 10 out of 10 for you 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗also keep fishing 🎣🦑🦐👉🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠😳🐠🐟😃😃😃
Definitely; I use the uniknot and figure eight knots for everything! That includes tying line into a spool and joining any lines! Always make at Least three coils when forming those knots;- More when tying with thinner lines! I double thinner lines to the my knots, need to concentrate a bit more then! Both knots start a bit different; the horizontal figure 8 shape,- Must be formed, before pulling tight! That way, your coils in the knot will form, (support) next to each other! Catch a big'un! 🙂 🎣🐟🎣 🙂
My family doesn't practice catch and release we do catch and cook because what is the point of taking a poor fish a nd shoving a sharp hook into its lips and pull it out of the water for it to suffer just to throw it back and let someone else do the same thing to it
Amen watch dead fish all the time from catch and release I fish my limit regardless of size and stop! You guys are killing way past your limit be ethical

I was pulling up fish in a ball of hooks and line because they seemed to be a lot more aggressive then bass ... the would have one hook in the mouth and one in the tail bent in half ... it was a huge pain ... in lines for me 😬👍🏼👍🏼
Absolutely agree. I use treble hooks all the time with little to no issue
RangRang you couldn’t be more wrong!
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and tips
First video watched! Instant sub!
Yes me 2
I had to drop a sub just for the consideration for the beautiful creatures that fuel our passion! Respect bro
In-line hooks are a thing???
I like the way you talked about the hooks I understand what Hook is good
My tackle only has circle hooks and j hooks but I never use them. I had the same question when I started fishing.keep up your amazing work 10 out of 10 for you 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗also keep fishing 🎣🦑🦐👉🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠😳🐠🐟😃😃😃
I like the concept of the inline hooks! Subbed brother
I agree if you're fishing for the sport treble hooks shouldn't be used, fishing for food is a different story.
even fishing for food, I almost never lose a good trout to a barbless singlehook (CA law) ...
@@lito_al_booboo Fμ
You cant eat evry fish you catch there are size parameters
@@lito_al_booboo I still used barbed hook

I never though to replace the treble hooks! Thank you!
Circle hooks are the best for the fish and barbless circle hooks are even better and the survival rate is much higher
Good tip!
I learned a lot here. Thank you. I am a late bloomer but really love surf and pier fishing.
The uni knot is my go to. Can I get by on that ?
Definitely; I use the uniknot and figure eight knots for everything!
That includes tying line into a spool and joining any lines! Always make at Least three coils when forming those knots;- More when tying with thinner lines!
I double thinner lines to the my knots, need to concentrate a bit more then!
Both knots start a bit different; the horizontal figure 8 shape,- Must be formed, before pulling tight! That way, your coils in the knot will form, (support) next to each other!
Catch a big'un!
🙂 🎣🐟🎣 🙂
My family doesn't practice catch and release we do catch and cook because what is the point of taking a poor fish a nd shoving a sharp hook into its lips and pull it out of the water for it to suffer just to throw it back and let someone else do the same thing to it
Hey i respect you
Amen watch dead fish all the time from catch and release I fish my limit regardless of size and stop! You guys are killing way past your limit be ethical
Sans the skeleton, so...you never place fish back. What about the ones to small...you eat that to
@@marcgigliello4142 yes, just like how we eat Bluegill, you just scale and gut them, and then deep fry them the bones are too small and soft to pose any threat
