I’ve always been afraid to use line higher than what’s recommended on the reel But I recently started using bait casters after fishing all of my life with spinning reels and now realize there is a big difference in performance and capability’s
Thanks for the info! I like to fish lighter lines. I'm usually using a 6 to 8 pound for finesse applications, and 10 to 15 for throwing lures.. Unless I'm throwing big swim Baits, then I bump it up because I don't want to lose those expensive Spro BB z's.
I fish creeks and ponds in a kayak. All I carry are spinning rods. I never understood people saying bait casters were more accurate. I can put a bait wherever I want. Anyway, I throw a lot of smaller baits. A big bass for the creeks is maybe 5 lbs. and in ponds, I have caught my largest, 10.5lbs. I pretty much always use fluorocarbon line, from 4 to 12 lb lines. (I do like catching pan fish so that gear is very light and very small baits, but the panfish taste great). A friend converted my catfishing line to braid. That is where it shines for me. Usually, 20lb. I just like spinning reels. Personal choice.
Spinning reels work better for smaller, lighter baits. Baitcasters will let you throw a heavier bait farther. If you like spinning reels and they're meeting your needs, don't feel like you have to change just because the Internet says baitcasters are better.
This is just the video i was looking for. New to bass fishing and was completely overwhelmed on information about type and size of line to use. Thanks for the insight. Im going to follow your suggestion of the 30# braid and 12-15 flouro. Have you ever had and good luck with lure clips instead of retying a new bait everytime? When i salt water fished alot we used Tony clips and they seemed to work good.
Question for you: I just picked up an Abu Garcia DLC 50 baitcaster and an Ugly Stik Med/Heavy 15-25lbs. I primarily do saltwater fishing, but want something I can use occasionally in freshwater. What type of line AND how many lbs. test would you recommend for this set-up? Thanks! In the ocean, I'm typically catching rockfish, CA Halibut and an occasional barracuda.
Thanks John, great job describing the various applications of the line to the baits. Do you ever match the line to the rod action you are using? I.e. a med heavy rod use 30# braid and a heavy action rod use 50# braid? Thanks again!
I’m just starting out in saltwater fishing and if you have any information on lines and rigging for surf fishing Corpus Christi area in particular it would be greatly appreciated. Normally a bass fisherman they’re “ my people “ too!😅
What size and type of line should I use for throwing a 5 inch Trace? And can you throw it on a spinning rod or only a bait caster? I do use both, but prefer the spinning, as I just started with a bait caster about a year ago. Thank you for any advice you may give!
12 to 14 lb flouro for me has snapped off soo many times on the hookset with a Palomar knot the last couple years. Crawling craws with a bullet weight, shakyhead, worms, dropshot. I use the fg knot with braid to flouro. Im thinking no lighter than 17lb now
So what type and size line would you use for a fluke on a weighted swimbait hook or a weightless caffeine shad- fished like a soft jerkbait is traditionally. I'm throwing it on 30lb braid to a 10-12 lb fluoro leader but I'm having a tendency to over work the bait I think- especially on shorter casts. Should I change to straight fluroro maybe or just learn not to over work it? Both? Have the same problem with hard jerkbait- braid to leader again- 10 pound fluoro usually- but I over work them to often- and haven't really gotten good at maintaining the proper amount of slack. I'm trying to get a more crisp action, stopping and starting on a dime- but it's very difficult not to hit it too hard or to leave the proper amount of slack in the line as I work it. I've considered changing to a spinning rod to- just to see if that would help- I know a lot of guys swear by them for jerkbaits.
When spooling a spinning reel with braid, I have purchased 10 pound braid and it says it has equal diameter to 2 pound test (0.15mm). Do I need to go up in my braid size to match for my Assassin FC leader in 10 lbs (.265mm) and should the braid be heavier than the leader?
Anything over 8 lbs on a spinning reel will make some baits act unnatural, it also makes casting severely difficult as well as a lot of line memory and rod slapping. Unless your approach is drop shot fishing with a deep spool that takes more than 200 FT of line. 8 lbs mono, 10 lbs braid + 12 lbs leader or 6/8 lbs Fluoro is your best bet on a medium duty fast tip rod at 6’8-7’2 rod length with a 2000/2500/3000 size spinning reel.
Hey John, my high school is sponsored by P-line, but when we went to order they were out of my go to spinnerbait line, is Sunline Assassain FC good for spinnerbaits? Should I order 17 or 20? Thanks!
2 things: 1. Sunline rates their line based on actual breaking strength. Most companies are quite untruthful with the line rating. They rate their line 10% to 50% above the actual breaking strength!!!! So, keep that in your mind when you shop. Compare diameters. If you are used to 15# Berkley big game mono and buy 15# sunline mono you will find it to be much smaller in dia and "not as strong" as the comparable big game. Why? 20# Sunline Super Natural is the same dia as 15# big game! 15# big game is actually 20 pound test! ua-cam.com/video/SS33aYSB6c4/v-deo.html 2. A leader tip for new people out there. If you are using light line say 10-20 braid to 12# on down fluoro, all you need is an Albright knot. It is easy to tie, very strong, and plenty small enough. FG is the strongest and smallest, but it takes a lot more time. Rod guide size is an important factor as well. I have rods with smaller guides that require an FG. You can't use leader with mico guides.
Everyone uses a weight line that's too heavy, example, 10lb for sunfish, crappie, ain't no 10lb sunfish, use 4,6lb, more bites, better action😂the one in a million fish isn't going to bite your lure anyway, use proper size line
Those are my people!!! Not sure how I missed this one but you clearly won the internet that day and today since when I seen it lol priceless

Great information John. Great for beginners and the more advanced. I still like my 10 lb for cranking. But got me to thinking. Thank you my brother.
Great insight into line size choices for bass fishing techniques
Good video and information John. Sunline is a heck of a product
Thank you....as always great info for us beginners
Thanks John we appreciate your videos. 👍

They can work well for many baits. If you learn a few good knots, it’s easy to retie quick.
@@JohnCrews what are your go to knots?
With the 12 pound braid on spinner what line and weight should I use for a leader? Thanks!
Thank u so much.. help me a lot

So unless i'm finesse fishing in clear water i shouldn't worry about a leader when fishing braid?
Thank you it helped a lot 😊😊

Your drag should match the action. Within reason, you are right.
@@JohnCrews thanks John, much appreciated, great video!
More power to you John, especially to your contents. What brand should I buy for a braided line that can haul a 20 lbs fish? Thanks.
Power pro

I’m buying a baitcaster to keep in my truck and I can’t decide between gettin braid or not
Do braid. Use a leader if you need
How do you know what thousand reel you got ?
12 to 14 lb flouro for me has snapped off soo many times on the hookset with a Palomar knot the last couple years. Crawling craws with a bullet weight, shakyhead, worms, dropshot. I use the fg knot with braid to flouro. Im thinking no lighter than 17lb now

You are on the right track. I’d go straight fluoro for both. I’ve experimented with it like you
Awesome video you are a awesome teacher
this is the video i needed
John Crews. I love using texas rig with 3/8oz tungsten bullet on a bait caster 7.2 speed and medium fast rod. What line should I use?
20 lb braid if throwing into vegetation. I add a 12-14 lb Fluoro leader if less vegetation.
What size rod are you using for that !
Thank you for this !
When fishing for pike, is a steel leader always necessary?
Strongly recommend
For live bait or bait like strimp, cut chicken breast is it fine if I use 20 pound braid line on a spinning rod ?
Should be fine
What pond line should I use on a 4000 reel
What size braid on baitcaster for nedrigs
good info
My rod says 15-30. If I go lighter does it affect anything?
Not really. That’s a suggestion

What lb should I use on a zebco 33 all time favorite reel which it say 6 to 14 lbs test line
eight pound mono
If my spinner reel reads 4, 6, 8 and 10 lbs, would it be wrong to use a 20lb line?
Anything over 8 lbs on a spinning reel will make some baits act unnatural, it also makes casting severely difficult as well as a lot of line memory and rod slapping. Unless your approach is drop shot fishing with a deep spool that takes more than 200 FT of line.

if your spinner reel says 10lb. max u should use is 15. 20 is way too much. it will break your reel and less line can tie in the reel
I need help I baitcaster My real holds 30 pounds of 140 yards I like to use 20 how many yards can I use for 20 pound test
What lb test leader on 10 lb braid
6-10
What is 8lbs braided good for?
Ultra light spinning rod with 4 pound fluoro leader for trout and pan fish. BFS for Bass, Dropshot, or Ned rig with 6-8 pound fluoro leader.
Hey John, my high school is sponsored by P-line, but when we went to order they were out of my go to spinnerbait line, is Sunline Assassain FC good for spinnerbaits? Should I order 17 or 20? Thanks!
I use sniper fc for spinnerbaits.
Sniper is their #1 selling line for a reason.
Some of these comments questions are so incredibly bad 😭🙏
Lol big grumpy green fish !!!

✨✝️😇✝️✨
Please...to many videos have talk for far too long before you have any useful information.

And you said 15 to 20 foot leader????? I’ve always heard of 20 to 30 inches, but not feet.
Yes, a number of reasons. Most pros do similar
Flurocarbon and mono are made from the same material.
But they’re not
Yes no
