It’s time for a BMW M3 v VW Golf R drag race!
Now when you look at the stats, you may think the result is a foregone conclusion… And to be honest, you’d be right! However, when these two performance cars come with such a notable price difference, we want to see whether it’s worth splashing the cash?
For starters, the BMW M3 Competition is powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo 510hp & 650Nm of torque. It’s only RWD though, and Mat’s edition cost around £87,000.
Then we have the Golf R, which is powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which puts down 320hp & 420Nm of torque. Unlike the M3 though, it’s got AWD! What’s more, it’s a whole lot cheaper, with a starting price of £40,000.
So what do you think - should you really splash the cash and spend more than double the cost of the Golf and get the M3? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

@@patrikkondic83 don’t be so sure, the new golf r can do 0-60 in 4 seconds flat. The m340i is said to do it in 4.1, and that’s WITH Xdrive, I imagine the rear wheel drive version would definitely have a challenge with the golf

@@patrikkondic83 yeah, VW also claims the new R has 320hp but that’s also played down. There are lots of people who have dyno’d their stock golfs and they make around 340. Would really like to see how the m340i plays against it

Drag race suggestion: what about the new 992 GT3 vs the M3 Comp? they have 6 cylinders, have a close 0-60 in 3.9, and they have 510 HP.

M3 would still win with ease. Launching in 2nd gear means it can put the power down well regardless of conditions
In the wet? You know that dry is the right condition. Wet is risky, and it reduces efficiency.

The R needs a tune to be in a league with the M3 which nearly has 200hp more. Also, about double the price

And then you need to add 200kgs to the golf to make it as heavy as the m3

(m3) 1800kg / 510hp are 3,6kg per HP. Golf R needs around 420hp to be at 3,6kg per HP (weight 1550kg). All that to have a really fair comparison. But then you also have things like transmission, tires, aero 👍🏼 They are both bloody fast for their class and they look amazing🙏🏼

@@RiasGremoryS54 um the Porsche 911 Turbo S is AWD with 650 hp and 800 nm of torque. It kills a Lambo in the quarter mile. Look at every race the turbo s is in on car wow. It even beats the 720 S in the quarter mile…(practical drag race, not a perfect condition drag strip).

And high displacement and more cylinder can rev as high as a small 4 pot or higher, depends on the engine design really but not these modern turbocharged engines, they don't rev high.

This felt a bit like a desperation video idea. I reckon they got let down last minute on something & this was rushed together to give us some content. As soon as the golf was said to be standard the game was up. I won't be harsh on them though as quality daily content can't be an easy thing to do.

Its more than just a display of engine power and obvious 'on paper' results. Yes we could have predicted the outcome but these races give people 'real world' perspective. i also imagine many people are familiar with Golf R performance (theres enough of them on the streets), but have not seem the new M3 performance; this vid and ones like it help put things in to perspective

I'd love to see a drag race between a Dacia Sandero and a Suzuki Swift. The Sandero 90 HP does the 0-100 (km/h in 11 seconds while the Swift 89 HP does it in 13 secs
It's weird because the Suzuki seems to be lighter
they should test the new sandero with LPG with 100 hp vs a polo/swift/i20 with 1.0 turbo petrol

I believe the GPL versione does 0-100 km/h in 11 secs. While using petrol it produces 90 hp instead and does 0-100 km/h in 13 secs more or less

The m3 beat the golf so comprehensively, the video had to be stretched past that 5 minute mark so much by giving us different angles of the races again.

I certainly didn’t expect this result; I knew the M3 was going to win but not by that much margin. This M3 Comp is a proper weapon, I wonder what the XDrive will be like
I personally don't expect the Xdrive to do much better, it seems like the launch is really good.
I'm saying that because Xdrive's gonna make it launch harder, but there'll be less power available once it's rolling due to transmission losses.
0-60mph in 2.9 seconds on a prepped strip, 3.0 on the street. The US has had cars delivered
