It’s time for a BMW M3 vs Porsche 911 Carrera drag race!
These are two of the best performance cars you can buy for under £90,000. The question is, should you go all-out sports car with the 911, or pick the more family-friendly M3?
Starting with the 911, you’ll find a 3-litre flat-six engine under the bonnet that can deliver 385hp and 450Nm. It weighs in at 1,505kg and it’s RWD.
As for the M3, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo that puts down 510hp and 650Nm. So it’s up on power compared to the Porsche, but it’s also up on weight, tipping the scales at 1,730kg. And just like the 911, it’s RWD.

The handicap Porsche put on that car is insane. 385hp from 3.0L H6 twin turbo.
Pretty sure you get 480hp with just a tune.
So is the M3, it's also the entry level.

This regular M3 is *faster* than this Porsche on track and it destroyed it on the rolling race.
Bmw is better4 door saloon for almost same price but more power ... Drag races are useless most races are done with rolling start

I think people have taken this "entry/base model" too seriously. It's still a porsche 911 so it's a serious motor. It's like an entry level ferarri or lambo. Obviously it's going to be fast. But both amazing cars in their own ways

Agree, I get that Matt has this (M3cRWD) as his daily driver, however it is not the “High Point” of the M3 lineup; that would be the AWD M3comp.
My guess is that the 911 would still win the brake test, but nothing more.

@@EfstratiouzThe Porsche has a superior launch system because it doesn't require building boost. The M3 even says on the dash it is building boost but most people launch it anyway and get a slow start. Even Matt has shown himself making this mistake on video several times in the past with M cars.

@@khrezy0127 No, are you OK? Matt from Carwow clearly states in this video that the Porsche he is in starts at 83k euros and that m3 is 87k.
@@davis7323 Go look at your local configurator, M3 is roughly 20K euros cheaper, but it's also an objectively worse car and will depreciate like crazy. I'd get a 911 anyday between these 2, but I prefered the 718 GTS 4.0, so got that instead.

The newer Porsche engine's power numbers are underrated af, that thing has at least 450 hp.
It has been proven in the past with dyno tests that BMW does underrate their cars as well. That M3 puts out around 30 - 40 BHP more than the official numbers say iirc. Just seems like something a lot of manufacturers do these days. Though, Porsche and BMW seem to be the ones that do it the most (judging from the drag race results the last couple of years).
In the end, I don't really care that much tbh. Most of these cars are plenty fast enough in a real life scenario.
No, it has 385 hp, it just puts it's power down so well, it just shoots of like a rocket with exactly 0 wheelspin! And it can actually use all of it's power because it grips so well due to the rear engine layout.
The Porsche is a beast! 💪

Interesting comparison!
The results were expected to be honest. The BMW has more horsepower and torque but Porsche's launch control seems to be the best in the business. You can tune this entry level 911to 470HP, imagine that! Would also be interested to see which is quicker on a racetrack. I am guessing the 911 because of the extra weight the M3 is carrying.

Because the engine serves as some sort of downforce!
It's not really shocking..rear wheel drive but the engine sits basically right above the rear axle. So being rear wheel drive isn't a disadvantage. Engine weight actually plants the wheels down giving it grip.
it seems everyone forgot that in other carwow videos the BMW M3 rdw did 11.6 and the BMW M3 awd did 11.3 both faster than the Porsche.

Wow wow wow 🤩. I have to say I didn't expect that in the quarter mile - with the massive bhp difference ! I have a late f82 m4 cp, and as a child I always wanted a 911
- my dream car, but would get 911 with 500 plus bhp. Something about Porches and yet I don't know what it is! Maybe one day i hope.
Both are perfect sportscars. Particularly - because of the rear located engine, the 911 has a perfect traction and therefore a perfect launch start. The M3 has the clear better and stronger engine which is also used in the race-car GT3 and the M3 is more a daily sportscar. The 911 has smaller brakes in the back a stronger 4 Piston Break compared to the m3 which has a two Piston Break in the back and overall +200kg. The differences of the Breaking distance Challenge between 911 and m3 is very small why I would say that the M3 has definitively a Better Brakes Concept than Porsche. In SUM...both are good

Veey simple. The differences in the "Break Challenge" are minor!

@@yarrr9457 dude you put down some dumb car stats which don’t say anything, it’s not about braking one time, it’s about continuous braking. You obviously don’t know anything about physics. The main factor in braking to a standstill are the tires, not the brakes. Also weight doesn’t always mean that a car brakes better or worse to a standstill. My Cayenne Turbo f.e. brakes faster to a standstill than both of them but it’s about braking over and over again. Also the brakes on the 911 were the Base, M3 not. Also the difference can’t be justified as minor, because it can determine if you make an accident or you stop in time. Just get along with it…

The cute little thing you can do with the base 911 Carrera though is you can go from 379bhp to 460-480hp with only a stage 1 tune, depending on what tuner you go to .
(540hp from celtic tuning, but they're not exactly known for reliability, often sacrificing most of the reliability for some extra gains)

The base Carrera is still like 10k+ more expensive and BMW usually have better promotion plans in Lease and Finance. But I agree the 911 is better car even I drive a Beamer myself 😂

There's something unique about Porsche engineering
It's when you look at the range and the price of the Porsche any range their miles ahead of their nearest rival reliability is a must on a sports car and they have that in spade fulls
