BRO!!! once i saw the video notification I thought it might be what I suggested.. AWESOME video man.... so informative and the ground view was perfect. you could see the cut perfectly in vince's video. I actually scouted a beach i wanted to fish at a minus tide and went back and fished it at high tide and finally landed my first perch. watching this video put all the pieces together cause its exactly what i was seeing at high tide. your content is awesome and the fact that you take viewer suggestions to heart is epic. thank you and tight lines brother
Couldn’t sleep after you suggested it! Started thinking of how to pull it off and this worked out perfect! Thanks Steve. Glad to be able to even find that old comment of yours from that pervious video too! 😅 you’re the man! Keep the suggestions coming.
I can't tell you how many surf reading video's I've watched, too many to still not fully understand. This was clear as day, can't wait to go out and try it. Well done. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad to hear our vision translated so well. Share this with anyone who may have a hard time identifying structure. The ocean definitely helped illustrate the concepts easily.
Bravo. You put a lot of work into editing this one. I used to live in Grover when I fell in love with surf fishing. Next week we are moving to Playa La Mision for 5 months and I’m looking forward to seeing what the beach holds.
One of the best surf videos I’ve ever seen. Two great content creators and an easy to understand how to video. Must have been a challenge to sync up the aerial and ground views. Thank you guys!
Awesome video guys , I fished the cut a few years ago on one of our beaches here in Australia not understanding to fish the edge , a friend and I were getting nothing at all but the guy down further who was doing exactly what you guys were doing and catching loads of tailer , we were frustrated to say the least , I now know what we did wrong , cheers guys ,fantastic content .
Great video dawg! Giving the secrets and knowledge of how to read situations and how to time them. We need more videos like this but striper and halibut from the surf. I’ve gained a deep love for fishing at about age 8 and I absolutely love that you’re doing this. Share and spread no lying and secrets. Much love bruddah
Simple and accurate! I now know how to better read the ocean when fishing. I'm in the Conejo Valley, just 20 mins from the coast. Love my local beaches!
Thanks again Ed I have followed your previous tutorials on reading the surf to better your fishing game and it is great to get an update the ocean doesn't change but depending on the day plus with technology different gear new strategies I appreciate the update always a pleasure great content thanks Ed
Amazing video, I’ve watched many others and just didn’t get it. Your very concise and clear. I learned a lot. Thank you for all your hard work. Stay safe and continue being blessed
This was so well done Edward. You took the idea from that older episode and took it to the next level! Lots of learning in this one too which is awesome. 👌 loved it

Just ordered one of your lures. Plan on going surf fishing mid November in Morro Bay the day before my deep sea fishing trip 💪 thanks for all the tips on all your videos I've been binge watching
Best surf fishing video yet on how to read the surf. I know this took allot of work but this video should be pinned on a how to catch fish in the surf!
Great video guys. If you are ever perching the far north coast of Cali or would like to, I’ve got some incredible spots I would share with you. One spot is a real challenge. “The Lost Coast.” Spectacular coastline. IJS
This is awesome, one more request....lol....any chance you can create an underwater diagram / drawing (OneDay) of what it would look like underneath the water for the sake of a mental visual.
This shit was so legit! I've never landed anything close to the size y'all just hit for. Obviously I was fishing to close in the wash and need to target that damn cut. I swear y'all just blew my mind with this one! Another reason I follow you, you never cease to amaze.. 👊🏾 Man you are a fucking genius...
Awwww that’s sweet. Haha glad you found it useful. The water that day was perfect to show what we were targeting! Get em next time armed with new knowledge. Don’t forget us when you’re catching PBs for a week! 🤣
Hey bud 😊thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed this video Ed created. Just a note, we were catching them in the wash. I was casting directly over the biggest wave, and also fishing that retrieve through the trough behind it. But yes it was directly adjacent to a big cut! And that’s how the fish get into the trough so they can feed on the sand bar. 👍
@Hook2Cook Fellas, I have watched many vids to learn reading structure as I am a beginner at surf fishing in the Oceanside/Carlsbad area and really, really, REALLY want to target halibut well. I have been hoping to find a vid that would show me what to look for from the ground in relation to what the videos show from above. THIS video helped a LOT as most of us don't have a drone along with us on our ventures, lol! I do scan the surf from a higher vantage point before approaching but once I'm there on the beach, I lose perspective. THIS was exactly one of the helps I needed, thank you! Now, my QUESTION is, how do I distinguish ideal perch conditions from that of halibut? It seems to me that more turbulent water around the structure may be better to target perch, and calmer longer spaced swells at lower to incoming tides are better for halibut, in general? Is my thinking correct? Thanks again!
Man, talk about finding the sweet spot.. this is awesome information. Not so simple along the Mendocino coast, with it's convoluted topography, big waves and limited sandy beaches. It's about two hours travel time either direction to get to suitable beaches and succulent slabs..
I now get what the difference is between cuts sandbars and troughs thanks man 🙌🏽 One question though which of the 3 should I be casting towards? Sandbar right? Thanks 🙏🏽
Just got on to your channel and subscribed. Cool vid.... If you don't mind. What rod length and action do you recommend for throwing jerk/stick baits? That's how I would prefer to fish instead of using plastics or bait
I never new the technical name IV always called the cut a pocket just because there usually would be a pocket of fish in those areas I new what to look for didn't know the name's there some good cuts/pocket between Oso flaco and Pismo dunes by the fence line on the Oso side 😉👍👌✌️🐟🦐🐛
Edward- I am ordering a quantum reel 35 and was wondering if I put Braid and mono on it what pound line should I put for both and how much mono should I get? How much of a fluoro leader should I use and what pound test ? Really like your You Tube videos!!!!
Great info and helpful. However those big treble hooks really bloody the fish. Do you think I can replace my treble with a barbless Octipus hook and still catch fish?
So cast into sandbars next to cuts? Don't cast into the actual cut? I agree with Vince, I look forward to fishing the surf again with this new knowledge
Yeah this session really unveiled a lot because the structure was so well defined! If you mail em on one side of the cut, you can probably move to the next cut and do the same successfully
Great video :-) I tried surf perch fishing for the first time this weekend. Tried both Carolina rig (got one bite) and a high low rig (no bites) I think I was fishing in the wrong place though. Looking forward to getting out and trying again. Question: how long was your leader on your Carolina rig for this type of fishing? Question: What type of plug were you fishing?
@@Hook2Cook Got ya buddy. So a cut splits a sandbar and a hole is basically a cut between the sandbar and the shore? And a trough is perpendicular to the shoreline.
It doesn't matter which coast you are on or what species of fish you are targeting; they all love cuts & troughs when they are in the surf. Ground level views are the most important to fishermen who don't have a drone. Good idea on the aerial and ground level, thanks.

Are you cast to the sandbar area or the cut area ?
I have a little confused.
Can you share a little bit more important to Me please ?

Nice job. Good communications skills. Good applications of pointers on the video. I learned a lot
Veryyyy insightful. The dual view really does make it easier to understand the waves

Thanks braddah! 🤙🏼
Is the treble hooks allowed in westport ? Rules says maximum of two hooks can be used unless specified. Trying to understand the rules
Nicely done 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
What size rod are you using? I fish with bait because i cant imagine constantly casting.
I knew you'd eventually team up with Vince. It was meant to be.
Yea our schedules aligned and the Pelagics weren’t an option! 😅 jk been wanting to do this video for so long and Vince was just the guy to help!

What app do you use for tides?
Nice video. What beach is this ?
Do I cast over sandbars(closer to the ocean) or cast just before the sandbars(closer to the shore)?
Love the video! this looks like a nice beach, is it up North?
Awesome video man, well done.
Thanks Vince!
This is a great video! I like these
Glad you like them!
Great video, are the battlestar lures heavy so they can be cast out?
They’re 3/4 oz
On that november1 trip, we’re you at oso flaco?
no
Great info and helpful. However those big treble hooks really bloody the fish. Do you think I can replace my treble with a barbless Octipus hook and still catch fish?
Yes you can! they make what are called in-line hooks. 1/0 size works for these lures
Fantastic video!
Thank you very much!
Look for the cuts in-between the sand bars
So cast into sandbars next to cuts? Don't cast into the actual cut?
I agree with Vince, I look forward to fishing the surf again with this new knowledge
Yeah this session really unveiled a lot because the structure was so well defined! If you mail em on one side of the cut, you can probably move to the next cut and do the same successfully
What do you consider to be the ideal range of wave energy when you look at the surf forecast?
214-326 🤗
Can you please tell me the right set up of a calesa on from the main line
Main line 30# braid. Rod: 10 ft salmon steelhead rod. I like the okuma Hawaiian custom 10’7”. Reel, 4000 sized reel. Must be mag sealed
My problem is, everytime i go to a beach it is crowded with a lot of people, iso im stuck in one or two areas
Oh ***t. He's the owner of Battlestar tackle? Dang, thought he was just another fun lovin' light line surf fisherman until I found out. Now I know.
I prefer the Battlestar over othets due to the weight...... and it catches :)

Thanks! The leader was about 5 feet long
Ed I’m a noob. I’m using a Carolina rig in San Diego looking for perch. Am I constantly reeling in or do I cast, take up slack, and let it sit? Thanks
Constant retrieve as slow as wave action allows but fast enough to not tangle up
太棒了👍🏻👍🏻
How do you switch between Carolina rig to Jerkbait so quickly?
Editing magic 😆
Are the halibut usually in the cuts?
much more protected waters when theyre in close. rarely in open water with no jettys nearby to break up the current.
@hook2cook, is this on the southern end of the Oceano Dunes?
best is incoming tide or outgoing ?
Generally incoming
Is a cut basically the same as a hole?
in this case you can call the cut a hole but you can also have holes in front of sandbars. a cut is a hole that splits a sandbar
