  • Ben Morgan-Brown meets a strong contender from Alvarez
    Alvarez Artist AG70 WCEAR
Music might travel very easily across the Atlantic but the instruments that its played on don't always fare so well. Brands that are big in the UK aren't always so successful in the USA and vice versa. Take Alvarez, for example. It has been around since the mid-1960s and is very popular in the USA, particularly through its association with the Japanese models made by the late K. Yairi, which were sold in the USA, though not the UK, as Alvarez-Yairi. For various reasons, Alvarez has never fared as well in the UK, which is a shame because when its guitars were reviewed they almost always fared well and those who bought them speak well of them. Recently, a change of distributor over this side of the pond means that Alvarez might be a bit more visible, though they still won't be available in every music shop - you will have to look around if you want to try one. Will it be worth the effort? Very much so, is Ben Morgan-Brown's conclusion following his review of the Artist AG70.

Bought this guitar today in Walnut. Paid £500, and it looks, plays and feels at least 300 above this. Fret ends, book matched wood, neck joint, playable satin neck. Very happy.

These are truly beautiful guitars that play way above their prices. I have an AG70CEAR with the rosewood back and sides, and fell into it's twin recently, the AG60CEAR, so it had to come home too. They remind me of another famous brand at less than half the price, and they put smiles on my face. Can't love them more!

Do they have distinct sounds with the laminate b/s?

Love my Alvarez guitars, nice bottom end and really rounded mids with soft, sweet highs. One of the warmest sound acoustic guitars I've ever played and this one is no exception. I've never been disappointed in Alvarez.

I’ve got 13 different Artists series guitars and each one is beautiful in the job they each have. I think it’s funny that I probably go through the alphabet twice when I say each model name out loud.🤘

What is the fretboard radius used on Alvarez guitars? I can find that spec nowhere except one very old out of date website which says 12" on most

I really love everything about this guitar except the DI sound, but for the price that guitar looks like a bargain. Great video as always!

I have a Masterworks parlor on layaway. I played it briefly in the music store and was just blown away. Total cost $684, after taxes (US).

Been really considering getting a AG75WCE. Would nayone know the tonal differences of the western red cedar top and the walnut sides? I can't seem to find much regarding the tonal differences from spruce an mahogany. Even Alvarez's site is pretty vague

The AG75 would be extremely warm with pronounced mids walnut and spruce is much bright and sparkly while cedar and mahogany is warm with great mids
