- The Nissan Kicks might be the perennial segment underdog but on the drag strip today it's got the numbers on its side - 156hp from a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine. The Skoda Kushaq, however, is no pushover with 150hp from its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. What could make all the difference though are these SUV's gearboxes.

Brilliant race, the Kicks deserves more coverage in the media with many choosing to not talk about it, but with its gem of an engine it really shows what the people are missing out on! I have one! Thanks autocar for being a major automotive channel to finally give Kicks the recognition it deserves 🎉❤️
Recently got the Kicks 1.3 Turbo CVT. I absolutely love the performance and the ride quality. The boost when the Turbo kicks in is exhilarating! 90kmph feels like 70.. And 70 feels like 50... The car is so quick, but quiet you can't tell when you've hit 3 digit speeds.
I would request everyone one looking at Seltos and Creta to at least test drive the Kicks once. If you can overlook the need for fancy (and unnecessary) features in the Korean cars, this Japanese car is guaranteed to thrill you with its heart and ride quality.

Fun fact : When Kicks launched drive reviews were feels not so impressive creta drives better.
When Kushaq launched even 1.0 TSI liter engine is phenomenal 1.5 out of this world.Kick is even cheaper then Kushaq and feels more premium in side.

Kicks is so underrated, despite being heavier it turned out to be faster. Not many people know it but it shares the same engine in Mercedes benz GLA. And that shows here. Kudos!!
It's vice versa actually, merc uses these engines to cut costs in their cars...
I own the same Nissan Kicks CVT Turbo. This is one of the vehicles which has segment above specs but priced segment below. I initially had booked Seltos HTX+ IVT without knowing about Kicks. Later during the waiting time I happened to Test Drive Kicks CVT. Then I cancelled my Seltos and bought Kicks CVT which is lesser than Seltos HTX+ IVT but has more features like Tinted Glasses, More Power, 17 inch diamond cut alloy wheels, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill Hold Assist and in addition, I-SVPT suspension (no body rolls), Graphine body structure etc....This lacks certain features like Sun Roof, Tyre Pressure Monitor, Bose Speakers (but Stock Music System is one the best), Air Purifier sort of gizmos. For ₹17+ Nissan Kicks CVT certainly cheaper than Taigun/Kushaq/Seltos/Creta etc ...which are expensive by atvleast ₹4 -₹5 lacks.
Great points! Same to same, I cancelled Seltos HTX+ IVT to buy Kicks. On the sunroof I did thorough research and sharing the same. Kicks has not given sunroof on purpose. With a high GC and roof profile kept low, longer wheelbase and no weighty panoramic sun roof you get the perfect "crossover" (comfort of sedan and power of SUV) stance and feel. Ride quality is good and don't feel thuds when driving over potholes.

Kicks is best in class SUV. Severely underrated. Great road presence, total VFM and gives look of a much expensive car. It is not for those looking for gimmicks and blings. If one is looking for a no non sense performer, go for Kicks. Low NVH levels, best ride quality, fantastic turning radius, Mercedes engine - it's an endless list. One test drive and you would know! Long Reliability of CVT coupled with 156 PS Dialmer, Renault and Nissan developed 1.3 L Turbocharged Petrol Engine is the choice for me - Nissan Kicks!!
But the nissan cvts are infamous for their complaints..... Heard about a few in ownership reviews
@@adityanrvarier7406 Nissan CVT Complaints were in certain batch sold in USA and were duly replaced / recalled by Nissan. CVT is made by Jatco, now owned by Nissan. There are several versions of CVT released every year. It's not about problem, but how a company responds to correct them. Unlike DSG of Vw group which is destined to fail and company raising their hands in India. There is no such issues in India with Japanaese brands Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Not taking Suzuki as they don't have any real automatics and still they keep selling old school jerky amts.
I have kicks 1.3 turbo manual once I smoked Kia seltos 7 speed dct ....
...kicks has rev lock which wont let it have a punchy launch...but once it starts moving ..theres ton of torque which pulls u ..Ive smoked kushaq with my kicks during a long drive on highways....kicks can maintain 170+ km/hr all day long without breaking a sweat...and yes kushaq with a 1.5 tsi engine is a monster too..both are great cars...
Carwow became famous for their amazing drag race videos. It would be so cool if Autocar does that with both luxury and regular cars in India

Kicks is an amazing vehicle. The Kushaq is just no match next to the Mercedes Benz derived engine and CVT gearbox of Kicks. It's the best value for money compact SUV in its class.
Kicks is sadly limited to those who are interested about cars that’s car nerds like us!

Kicks is a solid underrated performer with a gem of an engine that will keep running smoothly for lakhs of kilometres. Anyone who is looking for peace of mind, look nowhere else but the Kicks! I have a Nissan Micra diesel that has clocked over 130000 Kms and still runs butter smooth. It can easily beat the crap out of any similar Hyundai or Volkswagen when it comes to pickup and turbo-lag.
I knew it from the start. Recwntly smoked a VW guy who was trying to get into race stuffs with my kicks. Manual is an absolute beast in KiCks

A lot of UA-cam Reviewers didn’t like the performance of 1.3 Turbo CVT but praised Kushaq/Taigun 1.5 like it’s an AMG engine. Now, Taigun 2022 doesn’t even get Auto Folding ORVMs so I dropped my plans of getting it. Yes, a 22L car doesn’t even get Auto-Folding ORVMs!! If Kicks/Captur is relaunched with a facelift and minor price increase, I’d prefer them over Taigun/Kushaq DSG.
True Vish... I drive a Hyundai Verna CRDI but always lay my hands on Dads Duster which is Diesel. It doesn't have the power of Verna but has always WOWed me on every road i take it to😍🥰. Was interested in Captur but unfortunately it died due to less demands.😌
. Kicks is a lovely drive, powerful and might in many ways be better to a seltos etc.. pound for pound, kicks is also much more affordable. By a mile. Reviewers have been a bit unfair to this car
Is this drag race for cars or car drivers? If its for car then the best time for skoda kushaq is 17.243secs and that of nissan kicks is 17.356secs...so i think the winner is kushaq..and for driver ithink one who drive the nissan kicks wins...

This engine is a very powerful unit developed by Renault HR 13 and this comes in duster also and merc A class and S class too very punchy unit and Renault is know for their powerfull engine after all they are the 12 times track champions

Autocar is the only channel that always vouched performance of kicks and has consistently proved kicks is best of the lot!
All merits with "Traction control alway on" position in kicks. You cannot disable in kicks, which affects acceleration!
Kicks being such a heavy car with longest wheel base and width , 215 profile 17 inch tyre, still scrambled to Victory! Great show!
Nissan has really put utmost effort to revamp terrano with its global design of kicks and brought a wonderful car kicks. They marketed it well in all modes and also made it official car of ICC. Indians failed to acknowledge and went towards gizmos of Korean twins!
Anyways, Nissan is not here to milk profits alone but to provide value cars ! Be it kicks or the latest big , bold, beautiful Magnite!

Absolutely true, Nissan Kicks is an underdog in the compact SUV segment. It seems both Nissan and Renault got too overwhelmed with the customer interest in Magnite and Kiger respectively that their product managers and marketing teams completely forgot about Kicks and Duster. Both are great products with Kicks even more refined in terms of interiors, yet failed by their own manufacturers. Tried booking a test ride for Kicks in Delhi NCR a few months ago, no showroom had that vehicle plus the dealerships are just not keen to sell them.
Kicks was launched earlier and didn't get a very good response, they ended terrano also nissan kicks is based on 3 star terreno platform.
please bring manual gear box cars not automatic ones .
Kicks needed some cosmetic changes and project in markets. Then it will be a trend setter.

Kicks auto surprisingly gives superb economy when you sedately drive it with light dab on pedal; its a different beast when you decide pedal to metal and that turbo beast kicks in... typical Mr Jerkill and Hyde. Hope the DSG fanboys are having fun at rear end in that quarter mile.
At the end we experienced a Japanese outclassing a German! Japanese engines are theee most reliable period.
Actually, this is the same engine used in GLA, it's co-developed by Diamler, Nissan and some other brands.

How did it outclass exactly😂. Kushaq’s best time was still a tenth better and you just saw how effortlessly it reels the nissan once it gets going despite lesser power to weight ratio. The kicks is awesome but it still didn’t won.

Outclassed how ? The moment the kushaq overcomes it’s initial DSG lag it was pulling on the kicks hard ! The only reason the kicks won was because of the better CVT launch . In roll races the kushaq will leave it in the dust as seen by how the kushaq starts reeling the kicks once the initial lag disappears.
Skoda kushaq finishes the quartermile in 17.243 secs where as Nissan Kicks does that in 17.3 secs. Both the cars are good with punchy engines. In long run skoda kushaq will definitely win. Cvt gearbox is better than dsg when it comes to hard launch. Apart from that roll on speed of skoda kushaq is better.

This is the best drag race so far, such interesting results! Kudos to Nissan as the CVT did very well here for a CVT vs DSG comparison. Probably why Japanese car manufacturers prefer CVT's.
VW picks up the pace slowly and never yields , 1.5 tsi is a breeze. .. personally I like the looks of kicks which is much much better than Seltos creta. Taigun looks are simply global.
I picked race with kicks guy in highways but he could not meet up to stability , unyielding power of 8 year old 1.2 TDI...still he gave a tough fight for atleast 50 kms..yes 50km rage is quite huge for someone owning a non German car. ..
I think kicks is a better package next to skoda VW ..
Mahindra has also come up with some great package. Long term reviews should be taken into consideration..

Both of these gearboxes are pretty slow it seems...given the amount of power the cars have they should have cracked a sub-17 second quarter mile. Even the petrol Thar manual is faster than these two with a time of 17.1s

Own a 2019Kicks naturally aspirated petrol xv. Never wanted tin cans like creta or seltos. Was almost finalising a duster when i saw a kicks on road and was immediately impressed. Great build quality, great ride and handling and above segment creature comforts. Its is actually highly underrated.
I will still prefer the Kushak for its overall safety and build to sustain the speed.

This is a useless race... DSG's have lag, it has to be managed properly or brake boosted moderately
Instead of a quarter mile, do a race for longer distance say 2 miles. Kushaq wins every single time.

Its an utter shame that Nissan didn't give more efforts on the Kicks. Its a fantabulous car & should've been marketed much better. Given a good facelift it will give the likes of Creta, Seltos, Kushaq, Taigun a good run for their monies.
