- I Bought a REFURBISHED PS5 From GameStop - I Was Surprised! I paid $459 for this PS5 to see what they did to refurbish it and what the quality is like. The console they sent me says "Pre-owned" not "Refurbished" so I was even more interested to open it up and see what it was like on the inside.

As a former GameStop manager, I can tell you that they use "Refurbished" to avoid legal issues. You should never see "Remanufactured" and we were instructed to not use that word.
Gamestop employee here! The box is pretty much the exact same for consoles that we take in in store and consoles that are refurbished at the ROC. The only difference is that the in store boxes dont have the inserts and I wish we did. I too hate that consoles are sanded at the ROC but sometimes its a necessary evil. Also, sometimes “refurbished” consoles dont actually have anything wrong with them. If theres something wrong with the controller, we apply a refurb fee to the unit as a whole which means everything, including the console itself, gets sent to our refurbishment center
Looks like the fan is clean. Maybe they saw that it was basically unused and stopped there and decided to sell preowned? Seems to be in great shape, minus the sanding.
@@RocketRenton it’s not that serious tho.
@@MWM1293but it does mean you should address it in the future.
Sort of a shame that liquid metal still has the same maintenance as traditional thermal paste.
Standing up instead flat console maybe causing the Liquid Metal slide down ? If flat it would be even level
Question: Why do they sand it? Have to say that it looks good and is pretty much fingerpintproof.
@@Rick-hx1ne Its because the apu clamps are not tight enough, liquid metal has been used in pc’s for years and they don’t have those problems. Keep in mind pc’s stand vertically.
I personally like the sanded black trim. I like the muted look. If you sand it just make dang sure that the part is moving in one direction consistently with no diversion. Keep the lines straight
Even though it was in great condition, I still wouldn’t call it refurbished since nothing was done outside of the exterior. It’s just used in very good condition (other than the sanding).
Hi All,
Gamestop employee here, one of the reason that sanding happens is if debris is spilled all over the console. Some of the consoles, we've taken in trade that go to warehouse for refurbishment are nuts. I took one in that was covered in purple glitter glue. There was no getting it off and we can't sell it as preowned to other customers in the store. Also, we get a lot that have stickers on them. We try to peel them off if possible but we cannot sell them as preowned if there are issues like that on the outside casing and they go to warehouse for cleaning. Also, as another said, if it doesn't have all the items with it, it goes to warehouse to be labeled as refurbished so they can pull the missing pieces from inventory.
Honestly a brand new one I guess is going for $499 so I would just rather pay the difference and get a brand new one.
Love my Friday morning UA-cam lineup. 🖖
I will never buy refurbished, not enough savings.
Your missing out...I've bought multiple consoles ps2 slim ps3 and ps4 all maybe needed some work but all now work great
I agree I’d never buy refurbished. 460 vs 500 just spend the extra 40
@@SilenceWillNotBeTolerated but for only a $40 difference. I'd rather buy new, usually support and return policies are better with new items.
Depends on how much u get it for
Ps3 slim used was $100 from offerup ps2 slim ebay 2 controllers $100 ps4 was $125 needed replacement harddrive seller didn't know and xbox 360 $80 with a few games
Dk Oldies been real quiet since this dropped
From what I heard they done sand the black part of the console with Sandpaper, but the use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
Thank you for always providing great and informative videos! It helps me a lot when I fix things as well!
I was so confused at first, since it was clearly the perfect amount of liquid metal. Luckily you also came to that conclusion 😂
4:50 I have never used a pliers to remove a connector. If you pull in the cables you will not break anything on the board.
to anyone reading the above NEVER pull on the cables. ☹️☹️
I use Plastx with an orbital polisher to remove all the scratches from the OG PS4, PS3 and the PS5. Personally I hate glossy plastic, it never looks good after a few years.
I enjoy your videos very much and I hope you have a great day ✝️
Once I learned about the dry spot in vertical mounted consoles, I stopped using mine until I could install a horizontal shelf for it.
Hey dont need to replace stickers as you can take them off really easy and reuse them.
Just need ISO and a sharp thin blade.
I recently bought a ps5 with a broken fan connector for 200$ can you make a tutorial on how to solder the connector back, there’s plenty of videos out there but I figured you do a better job at it. Thanks
Just ordered that PS5 shirt! Super excited:)
Awesome! Hope you love it!
Awesome stuff Steve!
Sony recently had consoles in stock with a $150 credit on futures purchases
Love the little details Sony puts into the PS5
Another ps5 video 💪🏼 (and have fun in vidcon)
So wait. I have a question about this liquid metal stuff and the scrubbing and the oxidation. Does it mean that every body that owns a PS5 has to periodically open their consoles to scrub the metal and remove oxidation and dry spots?
Yes you definitely should.
Final fantasy 16 has started to overheat consoles, games will only get more demanding of the hardware as time goes on.
If you notice that scrolling through ps store the games tiles don’t appear right away anymore that could be a big indication of a dry spot I feel.
Make sure you go all the way and clean out power supply and big heatsink under motherboard.
I am actually considering to replace the liquid metal with Arctic MX-6 thermal paste, once I have to open it up due to overheating.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodoit definitely doesn't work with paste, has already been tested, the console overheats
If it's the newest model it's probably not old enough to need any work in the first place.
Technically just blowing the dust out and "sanding" it to cleaning is refurbishment... refurbishing can simply be visual, if they test and its all good and just needs some light scratches sanded out- refurbished.
I don't understand why did they used liquid metal instead of thermal paste. It would have been a lot easier to reapply thermal paste instead of having to deal with a dangerous material. And the fact that it is that hard to reach the liquid metal doesn't help.
Yeah, i had no idea that stuff oxidized. I always assumed the benefit was that it was maintenance free, and also performed a bit better.
@@volvo09 the benefit is that it is harder for you to do it at home increasing the chances of you buying a new one or at least pay for them to fix it.
Only small savings over new. Better to get a new one with a warranty.
Find a couple of old pieces to practise with before going gung-ho on anything important, but your heat gun with put the gloss back on those peices. TronicsFix
Imo the sanded look is better than stock, less shiny etc
I'm so confused by the sanding.. I've never seen this (in the UK at least). Seems nonsensical
I like.the.mat. to. Shine black.
Nice video! I got a question. I have seen in multiple of your videos a gamepad tester on the television. which one do you use? I am actually trying to start an electronics repair business myself. in fact I just finished up on an Xbox one that I bought off Ebay.
Suspiciously in a very good condition 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Steve is watching.....
From the start up screen , the console is new.
Why do they sand the consoles? I don't have a gamestop in poland so I have no way of knowing
Also i hope you are having an amazing day
Still don't understand why Sony went with liquid metal
I wonder if the included cable is HDMI 2.1
I am impressed with your knowledge about pretty much anything hardware! And I learn something from these videos, thnx!
Why did they sand it?
Whats the purpose of the liquid metal?
Can you make a youtube video called "What Happens if you remove the CMOS battery from the Playstation 5"?
To Tronicsfix, since you've been taking apart and putting back together PS5 Disc consoles, can you make a video where you remove the CMOS battery and then try out Playstation 4, and 5 games and see if they'll play. I want to know exactly what happens to PS4 and PS5 disc based games and how they're affected by the removal of the CMOS battery. Let me know if you plan on making a video about playing PS5 games without the CMOS battery and internet connection.
Hi!
jeez i paid like 350 for a ps5 a couple of months back, must have been a better deal then i thought
@@RocketRenton
Where are you getting your info???
The last time I read the failure rate for PS5s is under 1% which is very good... Especially considering how poorly people take care of consoles
Can someone tell me why they sand it?
Technically, if they sanded down plastic, it is a refurbished console. But still a bit silly to call it that hah
Took 5 months to receive your order?
Nah, they shipped it out pretty quickly. I just film my videos way in advance of when I publish them
On todays episode of 'Gamestop mystery boxes'.
looks like they just wipped it of with a cloth,,, i think thats the white stuf on the stickers
Got a Refurbished Phat PS3 and majority of the screws were striped.
I never buy used consoles never will. Much rather pay the extra to have a brand new one.
they know your profile name 😂😂
$450 to get a console that they deliberately ruined the finish on? 😂
That's barely a discount too.
So why does GameStop sand all their consoles?
👑
I'm not in the US. I'll probably never come across a GameStop, ever, and even I know they're dogshit. They have a terrible reputation.
I'm surprised they still exist, didn't they literally go bankrupt?
Buy at Jan 2023
Record video at April 2023
Video get released at Jun 2023
😂😂😂
Sony makes the PlayStation consoles :)
I'm all aboard sanding glossy plastics. Piano black anything needs to die
I doubt that it was sanded by Gamestop, it was most likely sanded by the previous owner
They do it to apply a fresh uniform finish. You can see fine scratches in the gloss black plastic, so they go over it with a 3m pad in a linear fashion to apply a uniform finish.
It was sanded by GameStop. They sand most of the pre owned stuff they sell
@@Tronicsfix really? damn. I have worked at EB Games in Australia for almost 10 years now and have never seen that. They just polish the plastic, and if not possible, apply vinyl to it. sanding the console is crazy
Meanwhile , my modded Wii is giving me much more fun than this overrated console! lol
Nintendo Switches!
First 😁
Let's go. 1st comment. I win
What is the point of a used PS5 for only like $50 off the price of new?
Why do they sand it?
I work at GameStop. Refurbished is sent to our warehouse unlike the pre-owned where we just take them in and clean them and then we put them in the box The refurbished consoles and the pre-owned consoles are all put in the same box that says pre-owned because a refurbished console and a pre-owned console are the same price
But why are they sanded to remove the shine?
@@ShawnClarady Probably to remove scratches and to make it look uniform.
Seems like a waste for $40 off for a refurbished one from GS, might’ve been better if it was $400. Might as well buy a new one with that price difference
I agree. For an extra $40 I'd rather by brand new now that they are more readily available. This UA-cam video was made to make a point about GameStop refurbished consoles. If the used price was $400 then I can understand to buy used.
You should ask one of your mate to get it for you not you order it in your name it’s so obvious going to give you a great ps5 next time if someone else get it for you and do the text again
why do parts of the console get sanded?
Good info thanks. I actually bit the bullet and finally bought one at WalMart and paid the price of $499.00 for the disk model. I had thought about buying one from a second party like Game Stop but have read nothing but bad things and for a few dollars more I get the full warranty from Sony.
Heya Steve! I was curious what you might recommend using to spread liquid metal if you don't have one of those Q-Tips or replacement liquid metal? I have an early PS5 & haven't opened it past replacing the plates & cleaning out the fan, so I don't know what condition the liquid metal is in, but your videos make me worry and I might give opening her up to take a gander a shot soon.
You can basicly do it with a fork
cant wait till friday when good old steve creates his video and uploads love you content steve
I've worked at gamestop for 2 years and (at least where I'm from, dunno about NA) we just say "refurbished" to look good, in reality when we do a trade-in for a second hand console we check that it works and that it has every accessory, if it doesn't we charge for the missing accessories and send them to the "refurbish team" that just adds all the missing parts (like if they don't have an hdmi cable or a controller), we don't actually repair any of the consoles that we get from customers, they should be already working the moment we get them, if they have all the pieces we can just sell them as soon as we get them from the customer, we just initialize them, clean them and box them (most gamestops skip the middle one tho cause they suck).
PS: also most ps5 we get second hand are basically new so it's no surprise this one was good, it's not gamestop, it's just the persone who had it before treated it right.
Then why do the consoles get sanded
@@Rockastorm you can charge for "scratched glossy surface" and if you do, they sand the part instead of getting a new one
@@AntonioBenetti thanks
I'm not any kind of repair tech or anything, but the changes they have made, that you mentioned, that help the repair process of the console might actually be in part for that reason. Because EU made some new guidelines that are mandatory for companies to follow should they want to do business in EU. These new guidelines are to improve repairability of new electronic devices and availability of spare parts for said devices. Again not sure this is the reason, but it certainly sounds like first steps to that direction at least. Nice video once again! :)
The fact that refurbished means different things to so many companies, they need to put some kind of regulation on exactly what refurbished entails.
In before he finds cockroaches inside
GameStop did something right... By (seemingly)doing nothing lol
so as a person who has spent time at GameStop refurbished means something is broken, whether its the controller, cables, or console it wasn't in working condition at the store and they will mark it as defective, send sent it off to the ROC to get repaired. they then either sell them on the website or send them off to stores to be sold.
For that price just buy new with a few extra bucks.
At least when they sanded it it was the proper way. I have done this to dozens of glossy black products I own. A scotch bright pad and lightly drag it in a single direction multiple times until it looks good. Works great and looks almost like a brushed metal.
Nah you just got lucky, they sent a console that was already in basically perfect condition. So they reboxed it and called it Refurb. Of course not before absolutely ruining it with Sandpaper.
Actual idiotic solution.
I think the pieces under or attached to the sticks are from microfibre clothes.
I wonder if its safe to have your PS5 in vertical position? Due to the liquid metal
Looks good. I'm surprised.
They probably just wiped it off with a papertowl and some paper got stuck under the Warranty sticker.
Awesome video! My family still loves the videos
So glad you enjoy them!
Imagine that they sent a decent shape machine to a famous youtuber.
Let a friend buy it and then make a review.
Ive had nothing but trouble with their "refurbished" sh..t.
The fabric under the stickers could be from gloves. Maybe they really have their own stickers applied there.
what is the significance of the 1215 model?
Thank you for this video.
Is the sanding to remove finger prints and smudges? Seems an extreme way to do it.
For about a $50 discount, that is about what I would expect. While my expectations wouldn't be exceeded by any means, that would be acceptable.
I don't think it's worth it for $50.
Gamestop is closing all the stores tomorrow in ireland😰 im going tomorrow to get my last visit
I need help my ps4 controller does not auto connect every time I shutdown ps4 or rest mode and i on i need to plug and pair the controller again plzz help if someone knows i tried everything reset and all troubleshooting
I bought one refurbished digital and it had smoker smell and had a stain on the ps5 plate
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I hate liquid metal.
I'd be sending that crap back. What must go through their mind while sanding those things 😢
