    6 years on from this video I just opened a bottle of this. I would have to say the nose and pallet are still spot on. I appreciate the consistency and the price. $22 American as of 10/26/2019.

    toured the wild turkey distillery and met jimmy russell. One hell of a southern gentleman. got a bottle of russells reserve 98. Tasted the WT101 and the single barrell both were excellent. Thanks Ralfy for all the reviews. Entertaining and informative.

    I'm enjoying a double shot of WT101 right now, after mowing my lawn. I add two cubes of mineral water ice and it is just right for me. I've toured the WT distillery in Kentucky, (as well as several others). , and was very impressed with their processes. They must have 3 dozen barrel houses full to the rafters of aging bourbon. I've tried most of the competition, and while there are more pricey boutique offerings, my standard request is "Give me the BIRD".

    I bought this after I watched your video. First drink was hot, so I added 3 teaspoons to my next drink. It is now so darn good. The finish is wonderful, and it's exactly how you describe when you say it's semi-sweet. It leaves you with a kind of chocolaty feeling in the mouth. Thanks for the lovely description, and thanks for the great review.

    Ralfy,
    You give me hope. Your a breath of fresh air. Oddly enough I was looking for a Four Roses Single Barrel review but this will do for now since, ironically, I am enjoying a glass of Wild Turkey 101 at this very moment. I'll find Four Roses later.

    You're right on, Ralfy. This bourbon is not caramel and corn sweet, not sugar burnt, or overly aggressive barrel flavors, rather, surprisingly savory, herbal, with a bittersweet spicy finish. Pricewise, this is a steal.

      @fishsurfer1 3 роки тому +1

      Which is interesting because they are using char 4 barrels, its beautifully complex and interesting compared to many of the other bourbons out there. I will always come back to the 101, and love sharing it with others who are not familiar with it.

    I enjoy Wild Turkey, and all bourbon for that matter, with a single ice cube. It might be too much water, but it's great for sipping on a warm summer's eve.

    I know this is an old review but I'm having fun exploring Ralfy's back catalog. I've started off drinking bourbon over 40 years ago but for about 30 years I was almost exclusively a single malt Scotch drinker. However, in the last 3-4 years I've really gotten back into bourbon & rye. The Wild Turkey brand makes quite a few excellent expressions. I mostly use 101 for mixed drinks, I'm sipping on an absolutely delightful Russell's Reserve single barrel non-chill filtered 110 proof bourbon while watching. Going to have to find the preceding bourbon reviews and following rye reviews. I really enjoy getting Ralfy's opinion on these classic American distillates.

  • @bmorgette

    Fantastic! Loved this series! On a side note, I'd say Wild Turkey 81 is for mixing and 101 is for drinking neat or rocks. I prefer it straight out of the freezer. 101 is actually MUCH smoother and more flavorful than the 81.
    Thanks Ralfy for all your reviews. It's because of you that I now have a variety of Scotch & Bourbon bottles in my cabinet instead of stock piling multiple bottles of my favorites.

    Maltmate, I believe Wild Turkey 101 deserved a much higher rating because of the Bourbon's value. Quality at a good price that is available everywhere. And since I'm on the lookout for value, I'm currently sipping on a dram of James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Rye Whiskey 100 proof. Aged a little over two years to produce great tasting notes of vanilla oak with a balanced spiciness coming from cloves and hints of cinnamon. Also, thank you Ralfy for producing your reviews, they are educational. And education leads to responsible drinking.

    Hello Ralfy. I think it's about time to review this one again. I know that i would certainly appreciate it quite a bit. Please do consider it. I've had it in recent times and i find it to be the absolute pinnacle when it comes to value to price.
    Personally, as a neophyte, i've had no problems with the high alcoholic grade of Wild Turkey 101. It really doesn't taste of alcohol so intensely that i can't enjoy it.

    Really really love this bourbon. Been on a bourbon hunt this year, mainly for financial reasons and I'm enjoying the journey. Love the ciinaman, herbs, rye and big kick on this one. Great stuff. If I have a bit more to spent I'll by an Elijah Craig, if not than Wild Turkey or Western Gold if times are really bad.

Judging from the notes I see sense in this whisky, it makes a great drink during/after a meal (esp during the hectic day of Thanksgiving). Hello Ralfy, I am so disappointed the Bourbon series is over.Wild Turkey is a mass produced bourbon, not very complex. The non-sweet nose and palate is due to a higher rye mash bill. Remember, wheat is sweet. Another great review, Bill

    Thanks for the review. My current whiskey standards have been Wild Turkey 101, Jameson's Irish Whiskey, Maker's Mark, and Glenlivet 12. These are rather safe choices that I don't get complaints about, so, I use them for drinking neat and various mixes. I can get most of these in the 20 to 30 dollar range and occasionally will find sales that can drop the price below 15. If you know you want to keep a few bottles of your favorite whiskey, buying in bulk can save you a few dollars.

    Great review, I definitely agree on WT having a nice savory quality that other, sweeter bourbons don't have. I think WT actually has a relatively low rye percentage, but they bring out the spiciness in the distillation.

    • @catman32000
      @catman32000 6 років тому

      Yes...This one only clocks in at 13% rye (definitely not considered high), but you do get a nice spice. I think it has to do not only with distillation, but also with a lower entry proof when barreled (115 vs most everyone else's 125 which means it takes less water to proof it down to the 101)and a very heavy char on the wood.

    I agree whole-heartedly about you "pretty packaging" comment. I had been buying certain whiskeys (as I am a novice whiskey enjoyer) because of the pretty bottles and prices. The more expensive, the better, right? I picked up a bottle of Basil Hayden's not too long ago, and talk about an unassuming bottle! It's basically got a door hanger over it, but it's the best TASTING Bourbon that I've had! So far :-)

    Virginia Gentleman 90 is still my all-time go-to mixed bourbon. Can't really go wrong with any Bowman products. I'd highly recommend.

    Thanks Ralfy.
    ya know we tasted that wee sourmash note also (though nothing is stated) ...Is a soumash statement compulsory or can that be one of the secrets of the recipie? Thanks again Ralfy.
    cheers

    I need to re-visit WT101. I have found many of the offerings from WT are disappointing, except for Russell's Reserve. That particular bourbon is the best they make, in my humble opinion. So, Ralfy, if you do another Bourbon Tour in a couple of years, keep that one in mind.

    If you want to get a good understanding of what good bourbon at a good price point tastes like, look no further than Wild Turkey 101. It's the standard by which all bourbons are measured against. At just over $20 where I live, it's also great value.

    Ralfy, I have bottles of whiskeys that I collected back in the 80s and 90s. I tried to open a Laphroig 10 year old. The plastic cover of the cork broke. Is this normal for older bottles? Can anything be done about this? Thanks a lot.

    As a Yank, I can attest to the surprising quality of WT. It is an outstanding product for its price point, and one that can compete with far costlier options. For me, the big, bold flavor and long finish really stand out. The next level would be Four Roses single barrel at $35-40.

    Hi Ralfy always love your reviews, so informative and educational! Can you recommend any good Scottish single malts that are quite similar to Wild Turkey 101? It's my favourite bourbon. Take care from Renfrewshire! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃 Sláinte.

    A question not related to this video, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. What should be my first bottle of peated whisky? It'll be my fourth bottle, so I'm a beginner I would say. I live in norway, which means there are no shops dedicated to whisky, so please recommend a fairly widely available single malt. Cheers! Love your work Ralfy, keep it up.

    Dancing Pines Distillery in Colorado makes a beautiful rye- it's called Awry I believe. Highly Recommended!

    I need to try Woodford again. I used to buy it all the time then noticed I hated the finish, but that was years ago. However, the finish was bad enough that it has kept me away for almost a decade. My palate has improved since then, so maybe it's because I was chasing down shots with beer instead of sipping it.

    Good whiskey for its price. I keep it for guests who want a mixed drink. I drink it myself on occasion too.
