    Been using Kase filters for about a year, love'em. Easy to use, no vignetting when stacking two or more, and they clean easier than others.

    I have the Kase 82mm Wolverine magnetic system and love them. I use filters so much more often now because it is so easy. Before, unless I was planning on taking time to set them all up, I would just skip it. With the Kase, I use them all the time. If I crack any of mine (unlikely given how tough), I'll think of your site Henry.

    Great vid Hudson, you help me to settle on a filter system. I've been watching a lot of pro's like your self on the various filter systems they use, and honestly it gets a bit overwhelming. Needless to say i've seen a few others that talk about the Kase system, but I have to admit your review was a bit better and nailed the concerns I had to go forward with Kase. As I am in Canada, and the exchange rate sucks, I ordered the kit directly from Kase Canada, otherwise I would have supported you via your website. Cheers and thanks again!!

    Kase magnetic filters rock! Screw on filters suck! I have dropped and broken large circular polarizing filters when trying to screw it on. Other times they get stuck on. Last April I dropped a Polar Pro filter on a bridge over the Merced River when I was trying to attach it to my lens. Did it land next to me? No, I watched as it rolled over the edge and gone forever. Magnetic... click and attached. Grab and pull off. It is a NO BRAINER. Thank you Hudson for sharing this information with us. And for your great youtube channel!

    Magnetic Filters are a game changer really quick to put the filters on and off and stack them, I use the 82mm Haida Filters cause I’m familiar with them and used to use their M10 kit. I do carry the Haida magnetic filters in a Kase case though! 😄

    Having bought into the Kase system a few months ago, a note for all you Nikon Z mount users out there. If you don't plan on using the 14-24 F2.8 z and instead stick with the 14-30 F4 z like myself, get the 95mm filter set. I initially ordered the 82mm set, but there was a pretty noticeable vignette at 14mm, and forget stacking. I returned and switched to 95mm and used step up rings as Hudson has shown in this video. No vignetting even with stacked filters at 14mm on that 14-30mm. The bonus is that at 95mm, I can even put them now on my 200-500mm which I never really planned on.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

      Or better yet future proof yourself with the 112mm set and the hb-97 hood that snaps right on the 14-30 as well as all the 2.8 zooms. :) dead simple. Twist... Click

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto Hi Hudson. Thanks for all this great information! Just to make sure I understand correctly, are you saying that the HB-97 hood is compatible with the 14-30 F4 S? I understand that it fits the 2.8 zooms, but if I can use it on my 14-30 F4, then I think I will go with the 112mm set to be future ready. Everything I can find online says that the HB-97 is compatible with only the 2.8.

      It sure does. Here's my B&H link: bhpho.to/3zkdfRn I can confirm it clicks right onto the 14-30 S and all the 2.8 S zooms. it's fabulous. I was avoiding using filters because of the cumbersome to use filter holders. They are bulky and take space in my pack. The Kase filters changed that. I have the 95 mm kit with the adapter rings. I use it a lot when the situation requires it. As you mentioned, it is a dream to use. The magnets made the filters stackable and easy to put on and off. I recommend going one size bigger than your lens diameter and get the adapter rings to avoid vignetting. Thank you, Hudson!

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 роки тому

      That totally depends on the lens in question. With my 20 1.8S, a single native 77 filter can vignette, but you can stack as many 112s as you want or a couple of 82mm filters. With my 70-200 S you can stack a couple of native 77s just fine. Here's the deal. Bigger is always better when you do this math and no two lenses or filter brands are the same. ;)

    Is there a better order when stacking CPL and ND? (Lens+ND+CPL or Lens+CPL+ND)

  • @newtonianinter8625
    @newtonianinter8625 2 роки тому

    Thank you so much. Great Review. I was making decision between this Wolverine magnetic and Nisi V6 150mm. Nisi gives full option built-in CPL and 2 slots for square filters, but it is really really bulky, hard to carry around, and required time to set up. Today after watching your review, I went out and tested 112 GND kit. I was struggling between square and circular system, since I usually shoot long exposure in daytime, and ND1000 is still not enough. Normally I stack Nisi ND1000 and ND64 to get 16 stop. I use normal screw-in ND with 2 NDs, there is no vignette at 14mm. But if I need PL, then problem occurs at 14mm, I have to zoom in at 18.5 to get rid of all vignette.
    So, today, I ran out to the dealer, I live in Thailand, and test for three stacking. Surprisingly, no vignette at 14mm!!! OMG!!! (Haven’t got a chance to test 4, they have only one and last set) So, I do not have to hesitate choosing square or circular anymore. These circular glasses are soooo compact and light weights. Super easy to travel with, just only a small bag and HB-97 then I good to go with all the trilogy lenses. Very fast set up, I just leave the magnetic adapter on HB-97. And so much convenient switching filters and swap through lenses.
    Thanks

  • @ronmarsalis941

    I absolutely agree with your decision regarding Kase filters. I was sold on the 112mm version after your last video comparison. The magnetic system with the easy on/off regarding Nikon's large filter adapter (HB-97) for the Z 14-24 2.8 and no vignetting were key factors. To keep costs down I'm using the HB-97 with the 2.8 Nikon trilogy for the Z system. The only concern I've noted was the accumulation of dust getting behind the filter while using the HB-97 at extreme locations such as southeast Utah. Kase's quality is top notch.

    I purchased the 82mm set in April 2020 on Amazon before they started getting popular. Since they have gotten so much press the price went up to around $100 more than what I paid for them a year ago. I noticed a slight magenta color cast that was also pointed out by another UA-camr. At the time I was using a Sony with most of my lenses 67mm so great setup. But few months ago I bought a Canon R6 with the 15-35mm f2.8 lens that has a 82mm filter thread. There is lots of mechanical vignetting at anything bellow 20mm. But few days ago I started using my Sony again and will give the Kase filters another go.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto

      Yep, I have the 82 and 95 steps on my site too. Just use a __ to 82 step. Vignetting clearly won't be an issue from smaller than 82. I think Nikon is clearly ahead of the curve with the 112 hood for the 2.8 trilogy. I'll bet other brands are looking at them and thinking about it too. 112 gives you more leeway not to vignette on a big wide angle and truly future proofs you. :) I love em. I'm sold.

      The HB-97 hood also fits the 14-30 F4 S! :-) The 14-30 is a fabulous lens. So small, light and sharp. The 14-24 is even better with very special color rendition and contrast, but it's far bigger and much more expensive. I find myself using the 20 1.8 much more for star work since I use a MSM tracker and can easily shoot at low ISO with longer shutter speeds. With the 14-24 at F2.8 and 500 ISO I need 240seconds to the 20 1.8s 90s at F1.8. With long exposure noise reduction that saves over 5 minutes per exposure. Both lenses are fabulous. Sharp in the corners with no coma wide open which is a miracle. You can learn more about the filters at www.hudosnhenry.com/kase and email me any time with follow-up questions. You'll never regret the Kase 112s for your system. They're just incredible.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 роки тому

      There's really no need to carry both. Once you have the pack of 112s in your hand, you'll see what I mean. As an ambassador they are supplying me with filters to demo to my workshop students in both sizes, but I don't carry the 82s much. I LOVE the 112s. A couple adapter rings and it's on my 50 1.8 with the 62mm thread (62-82 standard ring + 82-112 magnetic ring). The bag of 6 112 filters really isn't that much bigger in my bag than the 82s and they are so thin and light. It's not a big deal to toss that hood, a couple adapters and the filter pouch in the bag. Say goodbye to vignetting. :-)
      On the 70-200: when you use the hood with the filters, it's not really about avoiding ghosting or flare. it's about applying the filters. It's nearly impossible to use filters with the deep stock hood, so this at least gives you some minimal protection and you still have the stock hood for shooting near into the sun or bright artificial lights.

      I keep my CF Express cards in a pelican like little case in my bag's top pocket and my kase filters in a really wonderful soft lined 6 filter, ballistic nylon case the kit comes with in the main compartment. It's not a concern for me because those items aren't loose together. Those filters are optical gems and not cheap. Ditto the CF Express cards. Never left loose. Those are the kind of items you take care with. It's like making sure the lid is on your water bottle before tossing it in your camera bag. Standard of care.

I tested the heck out of Kase and NiSi. Both shocked me with the optical and glass quality, but the Kase were so dead easy to use. The Kase magnetic filter system certainly looks very interesting, but I don't understand why every filter (outside of a kit) seems to come with its own adapter. Surely the point of the system is that you have just one adapter attached to the lens, to which you then attach different magnetic filters.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 роки тому

      If you buy a single filter, you need a ring, sure you might not need one for your 2nd or third, but you do for the first and it's nice they include it instead of making you buy them as an accessory. :)

    • @tonyberry6710
      @tonyberry6710 3 роки тому

      Sorry, Hudson, this doesn't seem to be a good justification. Why not just sell the adapter separately? As you say, if I buy 3 filters I end up with 3 adapters, rather than just 1. To be honest, it seems like a marketing decision which is at conflict with the whole design principle of the system (which is to separate out the screw-threaded adapter from the optical glass).

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 роки тому

      This honestly is the first time I've heard complaints about a company including the accessories required for use instead of charging extra. I really just don't comprehend the issue. Some people want a ring on every lens, some people only buy one filter (a ND, a CPL). Nice that they need not buy an extra part to make it work. I mostly hear questions about why adapter rings to smaller sizes aren't included. This is the only complaint so far about too much being included.

    • @tonyberry6710
      @tonyberry6710 3 роки тому

      I don't quite believe that the adapters are included 'free of charge'. Here in the UK the sale cost of a separate112mm adapter is £40, and the cost of a filter (with adapter) is £199. If I could buy a single adapter for £40 and multiple filters for £159 each then that would be great. But, of course, sale cost is not the same as production cost. My guess is that the actual production cost of the adapter is so low that Kase do not think it worth selling filters both with and without adapter. Anyway, following your persuasive recommendation, I am probably going to order some Kase magnetic filters (unfortunately not from your site since I am in the UK).
      While I have your attention, Hudson, can you comment on the issue of light leakage with the Nikon HB-97 hood and Kase magnetic ND filters when performing long exposures. I have seen a forum comment to the effect that you do not consider this to be a problem. Is this correct? I am trying to decide whether it is worth getting the Nisi hood.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  3 роки тому

      Totally understand. I had the opportunity to stock the Kase Filters without rings, but the price bump was negligible. No. I have seen zero light leaks. The hood is great and it fits all the lens barrels identically. The nisi (which I've tested) is nice, but quite heavy and does not fit the non 14-24 lenses well. The grooves on the 14-24 are slightly larger than the other lenses. Nikon designed the hb-97 to be universal. Nisi designed their hood to the 14-24. It's scary tight trying to twist it on the 70-200. Not advised.

      I've been testing the first set I've had for over a year. It's held up incredibly well. Still loooks like new and I push my gear hard. I always advocated using the Manfrotto Xume magnetic system for my past filters, but they quit making it, and it added the potential to vignette with wide angles. Sadly it wasn't nearly as well made as these. These filters are incredibly well made, not sure who you're watching, but my opinion is that these are as premium and innovative as it gets. The thin design lets you stack, the magnetic stacking makes the use dead simple, the durability is top notch and I'm sure like me you've dealt with a frustrating stuck thread while the epic light changes. I'm personally done with that. Not only that, they're great to work with and responsive to my input. I always say on the topic of filters. You don't want to put cheap glass in front of your expensive glass. :-) The 112s are certainly expensive, but it's a lot of very high quality glass and intended to go in front of incredibly expensive lenses like the big Zeiss lenses, long primes or Nikon's 2.8 S trinity. 82mm is plenty for many and while not cheap, again... bargain filters tend to adversely affect image quality.
