Why I changed from Lee Filters to Kase Magnetic Filters

- In this video I explain why, after using the Lee Filters for nearly 20 years, I changed to the Kase Circular Magnetic System. I show pictures taken with the OM1mkII and the Kase System, used during a recent trip to the Pembrokeshire Coast.

Great video Roger. I’ve just changed to the Kase Revolution majestic system and love the true colours that my camera now catches. My precvous filters had such a colour cast
Thanks for commenting Andy. Which previous filters did you use ? I found that the Lee filter big and small stoppers gave colour casts.
@@rogerhance5883 I had the k&f nano series. Each filter had a colour cast although I could remove it in post I find Kase is so true to life I love them
Nice video Roger and some really pleasing landscapes. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the Kase filter system. I nearly treated myself at the photo show this year, it does look to be a worthwhile system and certainly is space saving, maybe next time!
Thanks for commenting David. The space saving is quite an advantage, as well as the ease of use. I always used to feel aprehensive about using the poloriser on the Lee System. After breaking one and having £200 down the drain, its not a cheap mistake.
@@rogerhance5883 Hi Roger. I’d meant to mention that inspired by your HDR images I rushed out to do some church interiors and disappointed or what, they initially looked awful and certainly worse than the individual images prior to processing, so there’s something I’m clearly not doing properly. My reason for mentioning this is a hint to maybe do an HDR video, from shooting through to processing. Your images were impressive, mine were rubbish.😀. Speak soon. David
@@davidosborn3356 Hi David, I have been thinking of doing a video along the lines of HDR and processing. There are many options for HDR on the OM1. The facility to take `In camera HDR`, as well as doing a larger exposure bracket and blending the images in Lightroom. I found that when doing a sunrise, where the exposure between the sky and the foreground is huge, bracketing is the only answer.
Thank you Roger a very helpful video. Thanks for the tip on using focus peaking I hadn’t considered that. Excellent stills also, this combo will certainly make long exposure landscape more flexible and less accident prone!!
Thanks John. It certainly is a combination that is a lot quicker and easier to use. Peaking is very handy when manually focusing for landscapes/seascapes. In the past, I used the depth of field button on my old DSLR`s , but with mirrorless, `peaking` is a lot better. No more unsharp pictures due to incorrect manual focusing.
A good review Roger & I have always admired your work. At the beginning where you mentioned your previous filter system I wondered how you woud be getting around the grad situation - I was not aware of the built in ND system in the OM system until recently - it certainly gets around that problem. I shoot Panasonic & Canon but use the Kase magnetic system (original ones) but shoot bracketted exposures which I'll be honest adds to my workflow in post so it must be good to have the built ingrad system. regards Alan
Hi Alan, Thanks for commenting. There are numerous times when using the grad filter just will not work, and that is where using a bracketed blend of exposures works so well. I have just returned from a trip to Skye and Toringdon, and although there were times the grad filter worked well, I did use bracketed exposures quite a bit. Its especially useful for sunrise, when there is a huge difference in exposure between the sky and foreground. I found that when using the Lee filter system, it would almost take up as much room in my camera rucksack as the cameras. Kase are a lot more compact and quicker to use.

Hope you never have to use Kase customer services. More than 5 months and the issue is still not resolved. Was due to have a video call last Friday, to finally show someone the problem and am still waiting for that call. They have also told me to buy a lens cap for a different range of filters and it will stop mine from falling off, and, the best ever has been that I am using them incorrectly, I asked how? and am still waiting for a reply.
Sorry to hear you have had trouble with Kase customer services. I have not had to use them, and ss I explained in the video, I am not paid by them, so cannot really comment. I did look at another filter system but the magnetism of the filter looked a bit weak, and I felt that eventually they may fall off. The magnetism of the Kase filters seemed a lot stronger. Whether the magnetism will eventually wear off will remain to be seen. I hope they get you sorted.
