Finally after looking at video for over an hour someone who actually is doing a review! One fool was comparing a Rode mic 3 inches from his mouth vs the Tascam 3 feet away and talking about how weak the microphones were! I felt like your review was realistic and actually helped me make a decision on buying this unit or not. I’ve been really unhappy with the audio from my GoPro and decided to look into something portable. I’ve got tons of pro gear, but when my wife and I go camping I don’t have room to bring everything, I think this looks like a simple solution to up my audio game and not have to bring another huge camera bag of stuff. Just wanted to say thanks for a great review! I’m going to get it now based on your tests. Was the audio like crazy good, no, but it’s 100 bucks! Better than the GoPro? Absolutely! See you out there as I work on our last trip out.

I've recorded small bands, lectures and interviews with my Tascam DR-05X. I've found the built-in mics to be more than sufficient for most of my uses. If you're going to use an external mic, be sure it's good quality.

I just ordered one of these today for my VO business. I hope it sounds as good as your does. I will use it to capture short phrases from various people in a quiet environment but it needs to be VO quality. Will be using the built-in mics. Sounded good to me. Thanks for the video!

For those of you who are struggling with distorted recorded audio, you might want to read these comments. I bought the this unit to record my extended DJ set. Connecting it to one of my mixer outputs. No matter what setting I used, I kept getting clip indicator. After becoming completely frustrated, I came to realize the output signal was way too high. I added a stage mixer to my set up. I routed my mixer to a line input channel of the mixer. Plugged the tape output from the mixer to the tascam line in input. From there it was easier to set the recording levels with out clipping. I set it for negative 9. Afterward the recording was SUPER clean. Great unit now.

What would you say the DB level of your recording was? I'm planning to use this to record voice and home theater audio up to 110 DB, is this unit viable or should I look elsewhere?

The DR-05X’s internal microphone works great as is. I tried connecting some shotgun microphones onto some rigs, and it just picks up all the hand movement on the rig even when you still turn up the low cut on the Tascam. The only time it works is if the rig remains stationary with absolutely nothing touching it. But aside from external mics, the DR-05X goes above & beyond with its internal mics. They’re waaay better than any stationary lavalier or shotgun mic IMO. As for the external mics, they make better recordings with the phone than the Tascam. I would’ve thought otherwise, as the findings made me look at the DR-05X a little less of itself, having to power the external mics using the Tascam takes away too much power as moving the rig, and even kinda active movement like jumping or slight jogging, causes the recorder to skip in its digital recording. I concluded this when connecting a lavalier and did the same movements and it barely cut out, though still kinda did. So all in all, it’s a good voice recorder for podcasts when held in the hand. It gives that dynamic range better than external mics. - I suppose if your phone battery was gonna die, you could connect mics to a rig and back to the recorder. It’s iffy. I give the recorder 8/10 because of it. Figuring the name Tascam, I expected better.

Zoom H1 can do usb Audio, with an OTG (on the go) cable. I plug my mixer output into H1 audio input. The OTG cable into H1 usb, and the OTG into my phone usb socket.
That way Facebook live on phone recieves high quality line audio from my mixer (can be H1 internal mics too.)
