Small correction: In the comparison, I meant to write and say Zoom H5 and not F5. And one more thing I want to point out: I verified the preamp noise of the DR-40X with two separate devices to eliminate the chance of testing a defective recorder.
Looks like they have changed only screen light from orange to blue in the DR40-X compare to previous DR40-V2. Can tell you though, that this device is very sturdy (it has metal reinforcements inside in right places), even it looks "cheap".
@@Mr_G Good to know that there is some reinforcement in there. It really doesn't feel like it. I guess I have to incorporate drop tests into my future reviews :)
Hello Julian, and thank you for the great review. I'm planning to buy a cheap (under 200 Euro) recorder for ambient sound (so an A/B configuration would be preferable while the majority of them are X/Y and locked in place) and I was thinking to buy this one. However after watching your review I realized the background noise is too loud. Would you be nice to recommend me a good one? Low noise, enough fidelity. Thank you.
Thanks for a nice review. I have been wanted to buying used one, but change my mind after watching this review. You saved my money, because I planned to use recorder with dynamic mic. Thank you once again
I posted a lengthy comment here earlier pointing out some things about this device. Hopefully it won’t “disappear” or be deleted again. Yes, this item is plastic which reduces its cost and second, it reduces weight as it is a portable device. Yes it has an intolerable built-in background hiss or noise. Nothing you can change via the menu for recording settings will lessen the hiss. Also the device will amplify and record any user handling of device while recording. So it must be positioned on a vibration free surface or a tripod. An accessory kit is available to allow device to be mounted on a typical mic stand. Any outside recording of music or nature sound will require a good wind screen added over mics. Lastly, if you have a good audio editor with a noise reduction tool the be advised of this good information. After recording something with this device - open your recording in your audio editor. Select a non-music or non-vocals portion with the hiss/noise section, copy this section. Then open your noise reduction tool. Choose clipboard as the parameter for what to remove. Play your recording to see if hiss is gone. It will be. Then save the hiss-free recording. Yes, it is a workaround but if you want a hiss free recording, this is absolutely necessary with this device. Editing out the noise from a field recording will require you first record somewhere quiet, then save say 5 or 10 seconds worth to a “hiss/noise” audio file first. Make your field recording. Then open both field recording and the hiss/noise recording at the same time in your audio editor. Copy the noise sample. Then select your field recording. Open noise reduction tool. Choose clipboard as the parameter for the noise reduction to use. Apply and check your field recording. It will be artifact free. Save your cleaned up file. Extra steps yes but doable. If you already own this device this procedure will help out. If you find a used one of these in good condition and know how to use an audio editor - consider grabbing it - as other than the irksome hiss/noise issue - it’s an affordable, overall useful and lightweight digital recorder. 😎👍🎥
I've been using the DR-40 for +4 years. It's my No.1 choice for demoing and being creative, thanks to the great overdub / mix mode. The mics are not too brilliant or harsh, they have this slight warm touch*. From 2012 - 2015 I "worked" mostly with the DR-05, while also trying out the Boss BR-80 and ZOOM's multitrackers R8, R16 & R24 (I still use the R8 for demos, as audio interface & DAW controller). My first choice to grab was and still is the Tascam. I like the DR-40 a lot, but yet it's lights & shadows.I was looking forward to this upgrade, but there is rarely something new. What's NEW: - a slightly revised menu (EQ, Speaker & Level are now in a seperate ""E/A" folder) - Dictation Mode (well...) - USB Audio Interface - 16h battery running time instead of 17h (based on 4 years of using eneloops: 8h seems realistic) - That's it Still NOT CHANGED: - instead of the "play" button, the "Enter/Mark" button is in the middle - USB port not protected like the SD slot - display totally overloaded - display has still 1990's Game Boy graphics - I prefer a dial for adjusting the volume (like a good old Walkman) - Power Supply Status has only 3 bars. That's far too vague. 5 bars would be useful, an additional display in percent would be awesome - still not possible to change the brightness of the display, only contrast. That's ridiculous! Guys, every simple China-imported mp3 player has this function! - still not possible to disable the annoying "Change Mic directions?" popup in the system settings when adjusting the mic - NO accessories! Not even optional! No case, no sleeve, no bag - nothing! 10 years ago I bought a cheap Transcend mp3 player for like 40 EUR. It came with a silicon protection case, lanyard, USB cable, line cable, earbuds, 2 display protection sheets, software CD and a case. And you could even adjust the display brightness! 40 EUR! Shame on you, Tascam! Conclusion: If you need a great, simple recorder with brilliant mics for demoing: go fo the Tascam DR-05 V2. If you need additional features, like XLR, full 2-track recording, mixer and you can pass on Audio Interface: go for Tascam DR-40 V2. If you need all this AND an Audio Interface, you should rather check the ZOOM H4n Pro. It's in the same price range but it also has a Guitar Amp Simulation, Zoom G5n based Multi Effects, a Karaoke/Jam function and includes Steinberg Cubase LE & WaveLab LE Download licenses and a protective case *I recorded "Einsamer Wanderer (QuickShot Demo)" with the DR-05 (light reverb, intro & outro with Audacity) - check out on my channel if you like
I was concerned that I may have bought my H4n Pro too soon before seeing how the DR-40X fared, but based on Julian's great review and your helpful comment, I think I made the right choice. Thank you.
Great info and thank you for providing it. Though I do have a question that you may be able to provide some clarity to...say I need a decent quality budget priced 4 track digital recorder along the lines of the H4n Pro or H5 functionally speaking, etc but have no need for included microphones. Just portable and somewhat clean preamps XLR, line in etc for field recording samples and creative noodling. Thanks for any insight you can provide - I feel like Im just wading through thick fog at this point. lol
@@theorist5497 , thanks for your kind words. You are looking for a (portable) 4-track recorder with XLR and decent preamps, is that right? Unfortunately I'm not familiar with recorders less than 8 tracks. Over the years I've been working with all ZOOMs (R8, R16, R24) and the BOSS BR-80. You would not want the ZOOM R16 or R24, they're too big. The BOSS BR-80 might work for you. I remember it was built like a tank and was fun jamming around with this little thing. The downside is it has 1 Mic Line-in only (no XLR) and creating a multitrack recording was very very very complicated and confusing because you had to navigate with a tiny jog wheel. I always highly recommend the ZOOM R8. It's not that big as the R16 or R24 and it's definitely the best of the 3 models. You get 3 gears in one: portable recorder, audio interface, DAW controller. It's portable powered by 4 AAs (eneloops recommended), it has 2 Line/XLR combinations, fully adjustable drum machine with 5 different kits, very useful effects (R16 effects are more "Nintendo") and a line-in for a foot switch. This thing is really the heart of my bedroom studio. I use it for creating songs on the couch and as an interface when recording. Since it's also a DAW controller it makes working with (in my case) Cubase a little more comfortable. I bought it for about 220 EUR many years ago. The price is pending from 189 EUR up to 320 EUR. If you don't need it urgently wait for a good offer - I would not pay more than 245 EUR. Sorry I can't tell you more about field recorders - though I hope I could help you out a little. Cheers
@@einsamerwanderer6641Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate the input. Yeah, 4 tracks would basically be my mininum, 6 or 8 is probably the sweet spot for it be useful to me for anything other than field recording. I'm not sure how I wasn't aware of the R8 - it looks quite nice. For some reason I was under the impression that the R16 was the lowest model they made - so that may be a really nice solution for me both portability wise and for being able to record my musical projects. Thanks again, you may have just made my day!
Personally, I love the "Record" feature of not going directly into record mode, as you need to set levels before you record anyway, and if you REALLY want to jump right in and record, just press the record button twice quickly. Also, you must remember price point when reviewing these recorders, and Tascam does make more expensive recorders for more exacting professional applications. All in all, in my opinion, this is a very fine recorder for under $200.00.
Even if all companies have better recorders, they should put pre-amps and a/d d/a converters. That should be HIGH-CLASS. All other things (cheap plastic, buttons etc.) I don’t care about.
I just got a FetHead Phantom today. I can confirm what you start--using the device easily improves the noise situation with my low sensitivity dynamic mics and the Behringer C-3, which is not terribly sensitive compared to other condensers. I am glad I got it and it will improve my experience with the DR40X and my other Tascam recorder. That said I have multiple uses for the FetHead beyond just lowering preamp noise on this device. I think someone starting clean is best to not worry about the FetHead and spend the extra money on a Zoom recorder with better preamps.
3:20 On the inside of the battery compartment door there’s a special place to store the small rubber stand so you don’t end up losing it. Simply press the rubber piece between the 2 plastic stems on the inside of the door and when replaced the rubber stand will never get lost while stored between the batteries 🖐😉
Also, if you want a snug fit in the tripod socket, just turn it clockwise a few times. All this said, a flip out stand or something that doesn't detach would be better and if done right, far less fiddly. It's overall a very good review. My nitpicks is that critiques and praises aren't given with any nod toward prices. Also, I thought the build quality felt fine for a $180 portable four channel recorder. Maybe the feel is different depending on whether you pick it up empty or with batteries. Weight subjectively suggest quality. (I've had cheap phones in the past that had a lead weight in the handset presumably at least partly to weight it down when they went with lighter weight speakers and microphones.)
Which field recorder in the DR-40X's price range would you guys recommend if you plan to mostly use the built in mic to record band practice? Would you go with the DR-40X for that purpose or is there another make or model you would consider first? Thanks!
I’m so happy i bought this device already. Your description is interesting, personally any recording devise with XLR connections under 130.00 pounds is un heard of. I got virtually Binaural sound recorded with the Y configuration kept still outside a window. Playback you can hear the direction vehicles are driving in. Almost 3D sound. I prefer this to my sony linear PCM recorder
thanks for this wicked video- I have a dr40 and the noise floor is outrageous! I have been doing research to figure out if this normal for the system and I think your video totally confirms my belief. I guess I live and I learn haha
Very nice presentation. I think English is not your first language but the clarity flow and content is excellent. Very mature voice and a job well done 👍
Like many educated Germans Julian actually speaks perfect English. Let's put it this way--he is much easier to understand in English than a certain US president ;)
Hi Julian, this might be a silly question, but what does the USB Audio Interface in this device do? Why is it handy to buy this one instead of the dr-40? Thank you.
Not only great tech skill with lots of numbers and figures BUT also opinions based on fact check without any brand sponsorship. Well done! I'll always follow you review!
Thanks for this. I was looking to replace my DR-40 because it has a few issues and I just tested the noise level and it sounds pretty much like you just showed! So I'll keep looking. I may check to see if you have any reviews on good handhelds.
Exceptionally clear and useful video. Thank you so much for putting the time in to this. I think you saved me some money and a lot of time getting frustrated with this machine, which I was close to buying.
Hi! Just a begginner here. I want to use this recorder to record nature sounds in quiet environments. I guess I will use the built-in mics. Would the noise you show in the video affect here? Or that noise only affects when you connect an external mic, like a dynamic one you mentioned?
I'm gonna pick one up tomorrow used for $50, as I'm mostly going to use it to digitize music I record on reel to reel and 4 track cassette, it's perfect. The fa t that I can take it out and grab samples to feed into my sampler is just icing on the cake.
Any observations on the noise when using condenser microphones with external phantom power? Is it any different if the tascam dr-40x's phantom power is off?
Hi Julian, I am thinking about getting the portacapture x8 but 'heard' the mics and more importantly, the XLR amps are not clean. Even with 32 bit float, I have heard the ein is not 120> as they claim. Have you tested this? I believe you have tested a Zoom 32 bit device in the past. May you let me know how they compare? Thank you
Thank you!! I nearly "upgraded" from my DR-40 assuming that _of course_ Tascam improved the preamps, how could they not?? 🤦♂️ Also- I can't believe this channel escaped me until now! I know your name from all over the UA-cam audio community, and I see why. Glad to finally be subbed! 👍
So: Pluging dynamic microphones to the imputs create a non-professional noise. If i plug in a synthesizer..... i would get the same noisy results ????????
I think the noise with condenser micros is better, but not perfect. In my case a Senneheiser MKE600. Do you have an alterantive option with XLR connectors?
When you plug an electric guitar straight into the Tascam DR-40X, do you need a pre-amp? Without pre-amping, it seems like Tascam doesn't pick up an electric guitar signal much at all. The levels are barely there. Put a pre-amp between the guitar and the Tascam, and the levels are 'normal'. Is there something I've not discovered on the internal menus of the Tascam, or is that just the way it is (signal almost nil when recording electric guitar direct)?
I wanted to know how many microphone capsules does it have. Does the unit have MS mode for mid-side blend techniques. Will you being doing a review on the Zoom H2n. Danke furs Helfen..
Hello, this voice recorder doesn't make any "white noise" as background? The sound is really clea, or you edited the audio? I'm thinking about buying one Tascam Dr-40...
I was about to leave this same response. Comparing a $100 recorder to a $700 one. You obviously get better quality when you pay more. They design their budget devices with this in mind. I have an even cheaper version, the DR-22 WL and I love it for its size and functions, even if limited. I just clean up the his in post, I mean I'm going to do that anyway.
@@shadowsilhouette8499 The Zoom H5 (which is one of the recorders the Tascam is compared to) is not a $700 recorder, indeed it is only a bit more expensive than the Tascam. In fact, it is very important to be aware of the issue Julian points out because if you're recording, say, birdsong in the field, you may have difficulty finding a quiet enough spot to use as a basis for cleaning up the file in post.
@@djinibee2435 Current Amazon prices. DR 40x: $179 , Zoom H5 $279, F4 $444, F8 $849 SD MIX PRE-3 $680. There are other audio recorders in the Tascam's price range, but these are not them. As he mentioned you can add the Fathead Preamp ($99) and lower the dB by 22 decibels. Check his chart and see how that compares.
That line noise as shown at 8:11 is unacceptable for my usage. I've tested across a number of mics. All the same. I'm extremely disappointed with this product and will be returning it.
I was considering buying a cheap recorder for outdoors recording but I just ended up using my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with an android phone as a recorder. The setup can record for hours and the quality is way better than what you can get from these cheapies. However, obviously the phone costs more than a bunch of these things. Oh, and yes I figured that the Scarlett fits perfectly into a small 1/2 rack bag.
Julian whats a good quality Not to expensive well made // Good performer // not to complicated .//somewhat small Tripod hotshoes fitable onto my Sony A7 Hotshoe? :-) Anything come to mind?? and Of Course Exlint Review
Great video. Thank you. I bought the DR-40X and very rarely use it. The reason to buy it was to spread the built-in mics, put it on a table in the centre of my music room, and face it towards my hifi speakers. This way, I assume it will record audio the way my speakers actually sound in person. I could take a line level out of my hifi system and directly plug it into the DR-40X but that would just give me a hi-res audio file on the SD card, right?. In order to share files with friends and family with music the way I hear it in my room, what best way would you suggest? I have 4 different pairs of speakers, and I want to share how they all differently sound while playing the same music from the same source. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi 👋 I’m looking for a portable recorder that can manage at least one hour of record using the phantom on with an external mic. I don’t understand if this recorder that you are making the review can stand for more than 3 hours. I will appreciate your help. Many thanks 😊
I just purchased this unit before seeing and hearing this honest review. I will need to get a FetHead now. Which one is it? And is there a condenser microphone you would recommend for podcasts and utube? Many thanks
I am presently using this to record voice over would u say the BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC204HD OR Steinberg UR24C would be a upgrade if yes which if these 2 is better
Very informative review, Julian. Thank you. I had the DR-40, which got damaged so I've just ordered the DR-40X (same price). I didn't notice much of a floor noise before - at least not one that I couldn't easily remove in post. I'm not familiar with all the technicalities, so what I got is more by luck than judgement. I use this DVR with an LCT 640 condenser mic - so I'm not sure if the preamp noise issue is something I need to worry about. Could you please clarify this for me. I understood the the LCT mic has a built-in preamp (is that correct)? So do I simply disable the preamp in the Tascam (how do I do this)? Is this what the input gain is all about? I'm recording voiceover exclusively, so maybe none of this is relevant to me (just speak closer to the mic?) Alternatively, what do you suggest as a decent, inexpensive preamp for a condenser mic like the LCT? Or what do you suggest as a similar DVR like the Tascam in the same price range, but which doesn't have the problems you mentioned? :)
Well, I managed to cancel my order for the DR-40X and decided to go for the Zoom H4n Pro for an extra $30. I hope I made the right choice, but one reviewer did seem to think it had a lower noise floor, plus the button layout seems a bit more logical (you can quickly select any of the 4 input channels in any combination and the menu button is away on the side) but otherwise all the other features seem identical. The only difference being that the built-in mics are fixed in XY position, but you can adjust the directionality from 90 to 120 degrees. Thanks again :)
@@LearnThaiRapidMethod Hey, I would have recommended you the H4n Pro as well. As far as I know, the preamps are the same as in the Zoom H5. You can hear the difference to the H5 in this video (I accidentally labeled the H5 as F5 at 6:47). With a Zoom H4n Pro in combination with your LCT 640 you can make very low noise recordings. Enjoy your new recorder!
@@JulianKrause Thank you. I've been working with the H4n Pro for a few days now and it's a great little device, solidly built, impressive internal mics (albeit super-sensitive to ambient noise) and low noise floor - esp. with my LCT640 XLR mic.
@@LearnThaiRapidMethod Great to hear! Btw. the preamp has nothing to do with how much ambient noise you pick up. That has to do with the mic you use. Be sure to get the mic close (about 8 inches) to your mouth to get the best sound quality possible.
@4:00 you suggest it should display audio levels when turning on the device? I disagree. How do you know what REC MODE settings are enabled when first turning on device? The “preview” to recording just takes a little getting used to, which I think is only a criticism on first use (because “red blinking light” usually means recording)... instead I suggest it should go from “yellow” for audio levels check the “red” for recording. There is also the “preview” audio recording option before you hit REC the 2nd time to actually record.
I just don't understand why you need the preview mode. When I turn on the device it should show me my settings, including the level meter, so that I can quickly set my levels. Then when I hit record it should directly start the recording. Can you name one good reason for the preview mode to exist?
Julian Krause Often people may use the “pre” recording feature on this or other recorders, so that it starts recording on a rolling buffer as soon as you press REC 1x to be in Monitor Mode / Standby, so that if you are 5 sec late on hitting REC again to be in Recording Mode - you still have that buffer. My concern (I don’t know how valid this is, please correct me if possible) is that if the device is always on this “Monitor / Recording Buffer” mode as soon as you turn on the device... that may damage the inputs? For example, plugging and unplugging cables while device is on with different audio input levels and not knowing which recording mode is selected (i.e. internal mic, line or XLR mic input). By requiring the user to at least (presumably) have everything configured and “ready to record” when they enter “Monitor Mode” - that seems logical to me. What is illogical / confusing to me is that “blinking red REC” light means “monitoring” and not “recording”. 😣 So I wish that indication between Monitor Mode vs Record Mode was better communicated (eg Yellow vs Red light).
@@JulianKrause The sony pcm-m10 (and probably a10) put you in a pre-record mode with the record button. This allows you to adjust your levels (input and volume) prior to starting the recording.
Recently picked up two Fethead's for my DR-40 and wish I had years ago. Input volume without was around 80-90 whereas with the Fethead's it's down to 10, virtually eliminating the noise floor.
Excellent review, I just bought one on line but maybe I'll send it back for something else. I did not like the fact of the noisy preamps, I agree that in 2019, a noisy preamp is not OK. And for God's sake this is TASCAM, Really, Say what? this is not OK! Thanx for your candid review
Very informative video specially on the noise floor. So which recorder model would you recommend please? This is my criteria: - have xy and ab configuration - can support adding 2 external condenser mics - can be used as an interface and connected to PC for either broadcasting and recording - decent low noise - budget up to $300 Thanks a lot
Ive been using the DR40 for years, still works like on day 1, and still has the noise you describe ... you need hotter mics for it (been using it with AudioTechnica). Seems the only added feature is the usage as USB sound device on Mac/PC ... Reason why i bought it back in the day: the Zooms had even worst noise floor (and dont check the crap frequency response) and you could use it with external USB batteries. And ofc around 160€ it was cheap. And even after all these years of "abuse" - even it may feel cheap - never was broken, always worked. Yeah i agree 2020 the DR40II perfomance is not acceptable anymore.
Hi. Thanks for this review. I was considering this recorder, but now, I am not sure. I need an external recorder with at least two inputs, and I don't have any xlr microphones. I have a lavalier microphone and a røde video mic pro +. Could you recommend another recorder with less noise?
I have come to trust Julian's scientific approach and objective measurements. That said I get much better quality out of this with a Behringer XM8500 dynamic mic than this review suggests I should. Perhaps my old ears and high frequency hearing loss mean I don't hear noise as much ;) My main gripe with the unit is that it's overdubbing and mixing capabilities take some time to sort out. You really need to download the full reference manual from Tascam. In short it isn't a four-track recorder in the more traditional sense as in my old Zoom H4. The process is basically overdub-bounce-overdub-bounce on track at a time. Workable, but different. I find the build quality is fine. The little rubber foot has a storage slot in the battery cover. And the Peak Reduction level control is very useful (there are other UA-cam videos that extol the virtues), but I agree that the Auto and Limiter level controls are not. Julian doesn't mention that you can power the thing through USB too using computer port, a standard phone charger, or and external battery pack. In brief I like it a bit better than Julian does. However, I am keen to invest in a fethead to see it I can improve the noise performance on this and other beloved recorders I have.
Hey, thank for sharing your experience with the DR-40X and the additional input! The reason you are much better off with the XM8500 is that it is a more sensitive microphone. Meaning, it delivers a stronger signal in comparision to many other dyanmic microphones and that's why you end up with less noise in your recording.
@@JulianKrause Thanks. A couple of other things you didn't touch on. I have been experimenting with the thing as a USB interface, and it is surprisingly good, especially when using the built in mics. My DAW is Cakewalk, and I do find it takes a lot of fiddling with the ASIO4All property settings to get down to 128kbps latency (I have a small slow laptop so I don't go lower), but it is possible. As for the internal mics, there seems to be a slight QC issue with mine. In the XY position the Y is turned in a little more than the X. This means the stereo balance seems to slightly favour the R channel when you speak or sing dead on. The average difference on the meters is only a couple of dB, and it should only be audible to obsessive audiophiles, but this device isn't cheap and I would expect this to be in better nick. Also, the sensitivity of the mic to plosives is a huge headache--a pop filter or windcover of fur or foam is an absolute must, especially if you use Peak Reduction, as I do, to manage the the gain. I still really like the thing, but I can't deny that the mic asymmetry, which I suspect does not affect every unit out there, is a tad annoying (even if it is easy to compensate for by positioning).
I had similar bad experience recently with the DR-07X, except it was worse because it picked up cell phone RF noise :( right in the middle of my recording of a concert. I would love to see a test of these devices that tested against RF interference - in a public venue you cannot control for people having cell phones. There seems to be no protection - I had less interference from my Zoom H4n, but there was still some. Have not tested my Tascam DR70D for noice. Can others post on this modern recordist challenge?
Thanks for the review! So... at the price of $170, is it a good value? Or should one buy the more expensive (by $50) H4n pro instead? (Edit: My main use case is recording piano concerts where there will likely be very quiet passages; I would like to have the audio interface feature so I can hook it up to a computer)
Hi Julian. This is a great video. Thank you. You mentioned some other recorders at this position in the market which were better choices. Please would you recommend one for me. I'm looking for one that will record outdoor sounds of nature at a reasonable level? Thank you.
Hi, what is the recording time with external microphone ? How long is battery life if just to use an external shotgun like EM9900 on phantom power? thanks
Alas, I just purchased a used one. I usually revise my recordings with a audio editing program. I hope the "hiss" from the preamps can be removed with noise reduction and/or E Q settings.
Thank you for this video. Have you considered the following: 01) Simple button layout 02) quality of speaker on rear 03) weight 04) low cost 05) accessory options. I think for the cost window this recorder it the best - but it works out ok.
Hey, it does not have Bluetooth. If you want to use wireless headphones I would probably look at a mic that you can attach to your smartphone like the Rode i-XY or the Zoom Am7. Or if you want to connect an XLR mic, you could use an iRig Pre HD. Please be aware the Bluetooth always introduces some amount of latency which might make it unusable for real-time audio monitoring.

Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....
Got it.....go to REC SETTINGS...MODE...SET ''MODE'' to OFF (was set to NEW FILE and this was causing it to jump to a new file during a ''soundcheck/levels test'' as the audio was low and the machine thinks audio input has ceased and ends the track.
Starting UA-cam channel on botanicals, it’s historic uses for medicinal purposes, etc.. Is a recorder/Tascam necessary? I’m focusing on low budget. New Sony ZV-1 vlogging camera, Sony Bluetooth shooting grip, Mavic drone. Rode Wireless Go Mic’s. Luma Fusion for editing.. How would I benefit from the Tascam?
Great review !!! You highlighted all the points that we should know about. That rubber back piece leveler thing is ridiculous. It shows that they did care enough to improve this product so we should not either. Thanks for the your time and expertise....

Hi Julian, thanks for the review. But, how's the audio playback quality versus a mid-range DAP?
Hello Julian, and thank you for the great review. I'm planning to buy a cheap (under 200 Euro) recorder for ambient sound (so an A/B configuration would be preferable while the majority of them are X/Y and locked in place) and I was thinking to buy this one. This is how review should be made for most of us. Straight down to business with no flares, gimmicks etc. thank you!!!

What's NEW:
- a slightly revised menu (EQ, Speaker & Level are now in a seperate ""E/A" folder)
- Dictation Mode (well...)
- USB Audio Interface
- 16h battery running time instead of 17h (based on 4 years of using eneloops: 8h seems realistic)
- That's it
Still NOT CHANGED:
- instead of the "play" button, the "Enter/Mark" button is in the middle
- USB port not protected like the SD slot
- display totally overloaded
- display has still 1990's Game Boy graphics
- I prefer a dial for adjusting the volume (like a good old Walkman)
- Power Supply Status has only 3 bars. That's far too vague. 5 bars would be useful, an additional display in percent would be awesome
- still not possible to change the brightness of the display, only contrast. That's ridiculous! Guys, every simple China-imported mp3 player has this function!
- still not possible to disable the annoying "Change Mic directions?" popup in the system settings when adjusting the mic
- NO accessories!
Conclusion:
If you need a great, simple recorder with brilliant mics for demoing: go fo the Tascam DR-05 V2.
If you need additional features, like XLR, full 2-track recording, mixer and you can pass on Audio Interface: go for Tascam DR-40 V2.
If you need all this AND an Audio Interface, you should rather check the ZOOM H4n Pro. It's in the same price range but it also has a Guitar Amp Simulation, Zoom G5n based Multi Effects, a Karaoke/Jam function and includes Steinberg Cubase LE & WaveLab LE Download licenses and a protective case
*I recorded "Einsamer Wanderer (QuickShot Demo)" with the DR-05 (light reverb, intro & outro with Audacity) - check out on my channel if you like
I was concerned that I may have bought my H4n Pro too soon before seeing how the DR-40X fared, but based on Julian's great review and your helpful comment, I think I made the right choice.
Idk if anybody will see this but what kind of SD card do I need for this because I have a mico SD card but it's say that the card does not work
Thanks for this, Julian.
You're welcome!!!
Another amazing contribution to UA-cam. Thanks for what you do, Julian!
It is a horror system where you can miss the dubble tap or forget it. Stupid system.
Thank you.
Which field recorder in the DR-40X's price range would you guys recommend if you plan to mostly use the built in mic to record band practice? Would you go with the DR-40X for that purpose or is there another make or model you would consider first? Thanks!
I wonder just the same. He says there are better alternatives but I wouldn't know which ones 🤔
I could listen to you for hours! Great job!
Hi Julian, this might be a silly question, but what does the USB Audio Interface in this device do? Why is it handy to buy this one instead of the dr-40? Thank you.
Great to see a more detailed review on this, thank you!
Thanx for this video, is it possible to use the DR-40 for a webinar as a regular audio interface by connecting it to the Notebook?
Only with the DR-40X, not the older DR-40 with the yellow display
Hi I am looking for a audio record to record ambient sounds, like birds, rivers, trees etc etc. would this be a good recorder for this?
whats the better alternative? H4N Pro?
Which alternative would you like me to buy???
Thanks, man!
Best audio reviewer / tester ever!
I'm gonna pick one up tomorrow used for $50, as I'm mostly going to use it to digitize music I record on reel to reel and 4 track cassette, it's perfect. The fa t that I can take it out and grab samples to feed into my sampler is just icing on the cake.
Incredible review! Holy ****. You should create a course to teach people how to create a review. 11/10!
Is there a 1/4 input for this device?
Any observations on the noise when using condenser microphones with external phantom power? Is it any different if the tascam dr-40x's phantom power is off?
HI, I'm using a Fethead for this recorder but the Phantom Energy it's not passing to my Rode NTG4. Any idea how to fix this?
Hi Julian, I am thinking about getting the portacapture x8 but 'heard' the mics and more importantly, the XLR amps are not clean. Even with 32 bit float, I have heard the ein is not 120> as they claim. Have you tested this? I believe you have tested a Zoom 32 bit device in the past. May you let me know how they compare? Thank you
A great honest review, thanks Julian 😎🎙️🔊
Thank you!! I nearly "upgraded" from my DR-40 assuming that _of course_ Tascam improved the preamps, how could they not?? 🤦♂️
Also- I can't believe this channel escaped me until now! I know your name from all over the UA-cam audio community, and I see why. Glad to finally be subbed! 👍
So: Pluging dynamic microphones to the imputs create a non-professional noise. If i plug in a synthesizer..... i would get the same noisy results ????????
Hi Julian, are you familiar with the Marantz PMD-661, if so what are your thoughts on it?
I think the noise with condenser micros is better, but not perfect. In my case a Senneheiser MKE600. Do you have an alterantive option with XLR connectors?
Do the internal mics turn off when you have a line in?
When you plug an electric guitar straight into the Tascam DR-40X, do you need a pre-amp? Without pre-amping, it seems like Tascam doesn't pick up an electric guitar signal much at all. The levels are barely there. Put a pre-amp between the guitar and the Tascam, and the levels are 'normal'. Is there something I've not discovered on the internal menus of the Tascam, or is that just the way it is (signal almost nil when recording electric guitar direct)?
Hi Julian what audio recorder by Zoom or Tascam will you recommend? That you are impressed with.
Is the FEThead or cloudlifter necessary with, say, synths or mixer main outputs for lowest noise?
Do both xlr / jack inputs support + 4dBu line signal or only jack is for line signal?
Hey Julian! Great and detailed review. Really enjoying your content. Thanks!
Useful info. Did you test it as an interface with a computer? How did you go with Windows drivers?
I wanted to know how many microphone capsules does it have. Does the unit have MS mode for mid-side blend techniques. Will you being doing a review on the Zoom H2n. Danke furs Helfen..
Hello, this voice recorder doesn't make any "white noise" as background? The sound is really clea, or you edited the audio? I'm thinking about buying one Tascam Dr-40...
You should be comparing noise levels of comparably priced models.
I saw a UA-camr raving about the Roland r07. Have you seen it? Any other suggestions for around $200 US?
It didn't sound that noisy using the inbuilt mics just with the external dynamic mic.
can it record line level inputs and the internal mics simultaneously?
That line noise as shown at 8:11 is unacceptable for my usage. I've tested across a number of mics. All the same. I'm extremely disappointed with this product and will be returning it.
I was considering buying a cheap recorder for outdoors recording but I just ended up using my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with an android phone as a recorder. The setup can record for hours and the quality is way better than what you can get from these cheapies. However, obviously the phone costs more than a bunch of these things. Oh, and yes I figured that the Scarlett fits perfectly into a small 1/2 rack bag.
Also depends on the mic
I have DR-40 in which the external input just died. What would you recommend to replace it? I need 96khz/24bit LINE-IN recording.
i would like to hear the noise example with the FET head.
Hello Julian, have you ever tested the zoom H4n pro i would like to know how it compares to the tascam dr40x
Julian whats a good quality Not to expensive
well made // Good performer // not to complicated .//somewhat small Tripod hotshoes fitable onto my Sony A7 Hotshoe? :-)
Anything come to mind??
and Of Course Exlint Review
you haven't mentioned how the price is reflected, could it be that its not as good as other models because it is cheaper?
Thanks.
What are the best options? (better than the DR-40X)?
Thank you insightful comparison. I'm recording crickets and other ambient bugs. what's the best low self-noise recorders out there?

Thanks for your clear and very detailed review!
Hi 👋
I’m looking for a portable recorder that can manage at least one hour of record using the phantom on with an external mic.
Finally someone who does reviews that are critical. What alternatives do you recommend? Are there any similar recorders in the same price range?
I'm recording voiceover exclusively, so maybe none of this is relevant to me (just speak closer to the mic?)
Alternatively, what do you suggest as a decent, inexpensive preamp for a condenser mic like the LCT?
@@JulianKrause TY :)
Thanks for the video! Can it be used as an audio interface for Behringer XM8500 and SM58? Are the pre amps good enough?
Recently picked up two Fethead's for my DR-40 and wish I had years ago. Input volume without was around 80-90 whereas with the Fethead's it's down to 10, virtually eliminating the noise floor.
Exactly!
Woe! Exceptional review! Really unfortunate not catching this before getting a DR 40......
Is there an audio recorder you would recommend the tascam or zoom h4n
How is this compare to the zoom h4n Pro?
Hey ! What aBout tascam 100 marc lll ? Noise ?
Very informative video specially on the noise floor. So which recorder model would you recommend please? This is my criteria:
- have xy and ab configuration
- can support adding 2 external condenser mics
- can be used as an interface and connected to PC for either broadcasting and recording
- decent low noise
- budget up to $300
Thanks a lot
How does the TASCAM compare to the zoom H4n around £80 more expensive
Thank you Hi Julian what's the best buy for my live looping show
I have come to trust Julian's scientific approach and objective measurements. That said I get much better quality out of this with a Behringer XM8500 dynamic mic than this review suggests I should. Perhaps my old ears and high frequency hearing loss mean I don't hear noise as much ;)
My main gripe with the unit is that it's overdubbing and mixing capabilities take some time to sort out.
Do you ever have the same issue with an external mic plugged in?
Can you use it will external power I.e USB
@4:25 looks like Tascam switched from Mini to Micro USB... though USB-C is becoming more popular now. Is the port also for USB power?
Yes, the device can be used like an audio interface and powered from the usb connection.
You do not say which are the better alternatives, but thanks, a detailed and factual review.
Thanks for the review! So... at the price of $170, is it a good value? Or should one buy the more expensive (by $50) H4n pro instead? (Edit: My main use case is recording piano concerts where there will likely be very quiet passages; I would like to have the audio interface feature so I can hook it up to a computer)
im also interested in the answer of this question!
Hi Julian. This is a great video. Thank you. You mentioned some other recorders at this position in the market which were better choices. Please would you recommend one for me. I'm looking for one that will record outdoor sounds of nature at a reasonable level? Thank you.
Hi, what is the recording time with external microphone ? How long is battery life if just to use an external shotgun like EM9900 on phantom power? thanks
What kind of recorder would recommend for making video lessons? I record video on canon 77d. I need a good voice recorder.
Alas, I just purchased a used one. I usually revise my recordings with a audio editing program. I hope the "hiss" from the preamps can be removed with noise reduction and/or E
Q settings.
Excellent detailed review Julian!
Thanks Michael!!!
Thank you for this video. Have you considered the following: 01) Simple button layout 02) quality of speaker on rear 03) weight 04) low cost 05) accessory options. I think for the cost window this recorder it the best - but it works out ok.
Hi! I have long dreamed of having such a recorder that I can control with WIRELESS HEADPHONES. Do you know if this model has Bluetooth?
Hey, it does not have Bluetooth. If you want to use wireless headphones I would probably look at a mic that you can attach to your smartphone like the Rode i-XY or the Zoom Am7. Or if you want to connect an XLR mic, you could use an iRig Pre HD. Please be aware the Bluetooth always introduces some amount of latency which might make it unusable for real-time audio monitoring.
@@JulianKrause Thanks for the answer! You've helped me a lot! Have a nice day!
First time seeing your video. Glad to do that!
What is a better alternative? Great video by the way.
Zoom h4n or H5.
Du wirst mir sehr hilfreich wenn du mir helfen könntest...
Thanks for your test, the noise level is so bad to buy!
Can you share links to all the little things you mentioned in the video? Please?
Would this be a good audio recorder with a ntg2
Great review !!! You highlighted all the points that we should know about. That rubber back piece leveler thing is ridiculous. It shows that they did care enough to improve this product so we should not either. Thanks for the your time and expertise....
