I've been performing magic for over 20 years, and I've always wanted to be a filmmaker as well but I'm just now getting around to it. Those 2 fields have always seemed to go hand-in-hand, so it's cool to find another artist who is into both! Your tutorials have been very helpful. Anyway, keep up the good work, and thanks for the quality info.

DJs BEWARE! Great video! I recently bought this Tascam and have been using it for recording my radio programs and field audio for samples. The DR-05X really is a great recorder for the price... but... it's not meant for recording DJ sets. This is the only drawback to the unit. The record output coming out of a standard mixer will not work because the signal comes out far too high. Unfortunately, the recorder doesn't give you the ability to reduce the signal to a usable level. The only practical way to use this unit to record a DJ set is to use a headphone output with the volume turned down significantly. That's fine if you happen to have multiple headphone outputs. Otherwise, you'll be out of luck.
i got a quick question here, @9.48, how did you get the interface on the computer to use to do the recording after you plug in the usb to the tascam and to the computer? Was there a software that needed to be downloaded before?
I received my Tascam DR-05x this week. I really like the menu interface. I have a dslr that has a mono mic built in and no mic jack. So I picked up this unit from Amazon. I also plan to use it as an interface for my laptop. So I picked up a manfrotto mini tripod for when I’m at home. . I’m adding a cold shoe mount with shock mount for the top of the dslr. All recordings will have to sync in post when I’m back from what I’m doing. I may make a UA-cam video with the unit Great tutorial. Picked up a few tips so thank you for that

Many years ago i bought a Tascam 4 track to use making demos for the band i was in. Fast forward 20 yrs and i am trying to put together a home studio. I bought a Tascam 24 track and soon regretted that did this. I should have gotten Pro Tools. It records to a SD card and the more tracks you put on it the less recording time you have. Ive been using looper pedals for capturing song ideas but was looking at this for doing that. Appreciate your vid, thanks
Just noticed that it appears you have a Tascam 24 trck. Can you hook that to your computer so you have endless recording time? I found that using many tracks cuts down your recording time when recording to SD card
Using the overdub feature on the DR-05X was as exiting as getting my first four track. You don't have any mixing functions, but it's so easy to record right off the bat it's worth it (hit record and it asks if it's a new track or you're overdubbing on the previous track. Easy.) Sit it on your lap to record drums, layer a couple guitars & vocals: BAM.
when u said that you do the low cut in post; how can that be done in premier pro? Also If I am recording someone speaking or vlogging, should I keep the low cut to 40 then or 80 for a better audio regaridng voice overs too?
80hz for vlogging if you're mostly capturing voices and regular environment sounds. In any editing software, bring up the EQ module and enable the low cut (high pass) filter. Set it to 60-80 hz, wherever sounds best.
Just picked this model up last night. Did absolutely no research, just got it b/c it was on sale. have to say I'm extremely pleased with my results. Used it to record at a rave which, I was flying a drone to capture video.

Hey Brian, thanks for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, easy to follow, video tutorial on the setup and use of the Tascam DR-05X. I used Tascam professional products about 20-years ago and I'm happy to know it manufactures a hand held recording device that I can use for dictation (to text using software not included), as well as other recording needs. Really appreciate your time.

Hi, very nice video. Question : the line in is stereo or mono ? Can i plug for example a discman or a mixer to the tascam using a jack 3.5mm and obtain stereo sound ? Can i use it as a mp3 player. Thank you.
This is a great explanation. I just bought this product. However, as a performing musician I recorded my first performance last night. When I went to upload the file to my computer the file ended up being many small files, not just one long file of the entire performance. Why would that happen? What am I doing wrong. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Michael did you use the settings he used on this video for recording vocals? I've just bought one and wondering what would be the best settings for recording clean vocals, cheers.
This is one of the best tutorials on UA-cam. I just bought one for my motovlogging. 1st time I used it was a disaster. But after watching your video, I think I have the right settings. You got a new subscriber!
@@MaximusWard It has 2 inputs but you can either use built-in mics or 3.5mm input, not both. You can record in stereo or dual mono, but only one capture source.
I have one arriving today, looking forward to doing some ambient/nature recordings. The only thing I don't like, are the micro USB types. They are flimsy and when they were the 'new thing' 10-15 years ago, I had a few items break purely due to that type of usb socket! On small items like this, USB C should already be the standard, like it has been on phones for years. I'd pay the extra few coins. Great content and very helpful video, thanks.
THanks for the good video! Question: Can i record phone calls with this device? And can it record both channels (other person and myself)? How would I set it up?
Heads up for the uninitiated: BUY the power adapter with the recorder. I can not beleive how quickly these go through batteries. I put in two brand new TOL AA's yesterday, wathced this video and set it up, played around with it today and already its down to one bar. I'm ordering one now. For all they do maybe I should have known this but I'm a newbie, so. Its an incredible product BTW.
This told me what i was missing: SD CARD READER option in USB CONNECT. All I need to do is record my band rehearsal, then upload that file to my PC for work in Audacity. The manual shows nothing about this, only about AUDIO I/F, which got me nowhere. Very simple, now that I know how. Thank you much.
Hello Brian. I just bought this device. Can you tell me what the best settings I should use to record my bands practice. We are loud. Thank you in advanced
Thanks so much! Exactly what I was looking for, and very well and easily explained. I'm new to audio (but very interested) and content creation, and now I will hit the subscribe button! Looking forward to watching and learning more from your channel!
I stumbled upon this video by chance. I was intrigued with the audio interface facility as an aid to mutitrack music recording. Just to illustrate possible use. If I use Garageband on my Mac with am externak mixing desk, say a Boehringer 6 channel.mixer and i want to either DI or mic up a guitar or bass, how would I utilise the dr05x ? Would I put the instruments through the mixer and connect the desk output to the tascam.or is that pointless? I'm trying to work out whether this device would be a better option than my old M-Audio inteface and a mixing desk. This is only for home recording so I'm not wanting to survey or thousands on studio grade equipment but the sound of your you tube video was pretty impressive..certainly better by a long way when compared to the AM radio I listened to in my teens.
Thank you for the great review! Is using the Tascam's built in mics with the windscreen equal (less or more) in quality than using the VXR10 Pro? I'm wondering if the VXR10 pro would be a good companion for creating podcasts and for vocals and/or instruments? The built it mics sound really good to me, but not an expert. Thank you for any input!
When using the tascam as a Interface it is possible to mute it pressing one button? If not, which is the best way to mute it (stop recording) in just a blink? Thank you for the guide
Hello! I am using and enjoying the TASCAM Dr-05x for my band's music. I love the sound when listened to directly from the recorder, however I am having alot of trouble transferring the wave files to my Mac (version 10.11.6). Any info would really, really help. Thanks for the video : )
Hi Betty! When you say you're having trouble, what do you mean? Pull the micro SD card out, put it in an SD adapter, and put that into the Mac. Click and drag your files. OR connect the DR-05X via USB for storage (not I/O), click and drag.
the dr05x also supports micro SD cards larger than 32GB (max of the original dr05) and a benefit of both is that you can USB power them with a powerbank
Hi Brian, I’m looking for USB mic and portable recorder, and found this great video. Thank you. It’s seems fits both my requirements. I have one question want to ask you: is DR-05X able to be USB mic and record line-in simultaneously? Thanks you.
Great question, and I'm not sure. My gut tells me no, you can't record live-in and USB at the same time. The USB interface function takes over the entire unit and screen.
@@AudioforContentCreators ; Yep me again... playing around with my Tascam Dr-05X and was curious if I could & how would I use it with my USB Apogee Mic+? Like do I plug into the ext. mic in or connect them by using the USB connections...
WICKED! Thanks best 13 minutes I have spent watching a helpful video. I have a couple questions in a reader hub that regards to the sd cards and card readers and the 48k vs 96k. 1. Should I reformat old sd cards on the recorder or on the computer? 2.Can you suggest a good reliable multiple reader hub ( I have old sd cards different formats that I want to transfer , so 2birds 1 stone!) 3. How to choose the right mini sd card in terms of speed, format and size? 4. If I am primarily using the audio for video shot on 4k @24fps, which speed should I be using for audio 48k or 96k Thanks in advance !
I love this video man, it was extremely informative, granted I have the DR-07x but it's virtually the same set up. What my biggest ask now is what attachment are you using to mount your VXR 10 to the boom @ 11:22 ? Of the 2 booms I have, both mounting screws are much too large to secure the base to.
Thank you very much for that video ! You explain everything very clearly and understandably. Before I found you I didn't know anything about audio settings. I love your channel :*
Just purchase one and the setup is easy and recorded a few conga drum tracks. Your video really helped me get started and opened my eyes to many of its capabilities. Not bad for $100 bucks
Nice tutorial but how will be the setup if want to record an instrument let say drums. Were is best to put the Tascam recorder up, in front or behind instrument? The auto level is good to use in this case?
Never use auto level for instruments. Set it manually so the loudest peaks are at -6db or lower. As for placement, I'd put it overhead and slightly in front (closer to audience side). But that's subjective. Where does it achieve the sound you want? That's the right position.
@@AudioforContentCreators unfortunately the phone I have is very dated, it gets laggy and the little one has dropped it more times than ive had hot dinners. until the little one gets older I wont be buying a phone suitable for the task in hand. (why not do it on your computer via skype / messenger etc... well... I live quite rural and the only internet I have is my phone tethering to the computer and it has the habit of going choppy and laggy.... ) So my only solution is to try and get this method working. Any suggestions?
Heard a lot about the amp noise in tascam. Your thoughts? I’m looking to do field recording of nature as well as individual performances on stage as well as podcasts alone and with others. Think I can do all these things with just a handheld? Or should I also buy extra mics?
04:07 2GB is not the best option - this setting tells you what the maximum single file the recorder can create if you record continuously for many hours. For example, if we record 16bit/44.1k, the recorder will automatically "break" the files every 3 hours and 20 minutes (for 16bit/48kHz respectively 3h and 6m) and further recording will be in the next file. However, if in the meantime a serious failure occurs (e.g. sudden power loss), then unfortunately the entire previous record is irretrievably lost. For this reason, it is worth considering whether to use a lower value of automatic file splitting (we have here from 64MB to 2GB). Of course, the safest option is 64MB, i.e. closing one file and opening another one every 64MB, but this in turn means that we have only about 6 minutes of recording in one file, the continuation is in the next and in the next. Then we need to "glue" these files together. But on the other hand, we are almost 100% sure that in the event of a failure we will only lose the last 6 minutes. In the recorder, we can choose the following values: 64, 128, 256, 512MB, 1GB and 2GB. It is worth thinking ahead and choosing the right value, depending on how valuable the recording we are making and how high a degree of reliability we expect.

Thank you for any input!
really did help. I got this thing a year ago for my new podcast I started in 2020 but I don't feel I am taking full advantage until now.
Thank you so much for such a simple and quick review
What about the Overdubbing feature? what does that do in particular
When using the tascam as a Interface it is possible to mute it pressing one button? If not, which is the best way to mute it (stop recording) in just a blink? Thank you for the guide
Not as far as I know.
@@AudioforContentCreators I appreciate your answer! It would be great a mute function but nothing is perfect
They should pay this guy a lot of money. Thanks for the knowledge, man 👍🏼
Can u charge this with usb or do you need batteries to use it?
Thank you for taking the time to put this guide togeher, Brian. 😁 👍 👍
Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
Hi Brian,
I’m looking for USB mic and portable recorder, and found this great video.
@@lpjbird You wouldn't. Plug a USB mic directly into the computer.
Nice video, I'm also going to purchase the dr05x for my video voiceovers. Mic Input jack is mono or stereo?
Stereo 3.5mm TRS.
I want to play around with recording sounds - street sounds, birds chirping, etc. Is this a good choice to start?
Good place to start, yes. It won't be perfect, but definitely good for experimenting before sinking any real money into an expensive stereo mic.

Great video, very helpful. You need way more subs!
Can you hook it up to a mixer (like goxlr) and use it with streamlabs obs?
I still have my DR-05 which I use alot. The only negative is the battery door retaining guides wear out causing a loose battery door that falls off
WICKED! Thanks best 13 minutes I have spent watching a helpful video. I have a couple questions in a reader hub that regards to the sd cards and card readers and the 48k vs 96k.
1. Should I reformat old sd cards on the recorder or on the computer?
2.Can you suggest a good reliable multiple reader hub ( I have old sd cards different formats that I want to transfer , so 2birds 1 stone!)
3. How to choose the right mini sd card in terms of speed, format and size?
4. If I am primarily using the audio for video shot on 4k @24fps, which speed should I be using for audio 48k or 96k
Thanks in advance !
Can the Tascam record to a camera using a TRS cable. Or using the micro USB out to a TRS input on my Nikon?
I love this video man, it was extremely informative, granted I have the DR-07x but it's virtually the same set up. What my biggest ask now is what attachment are you using to mount your VXR 10 to the boom @ 11:22 ? Of the 2 booms I have, both mounting screws are much too large to secure the base to.
Where can I find the link you have for learning how to manually set the audio?
Thank you very much for that video ! You explain everything very clearly and understandably. Before I found you I didn't know anything about audio settings. I love your channel :*
Can I hook it to my PC and use the audio in to record my synth for example (directlyto my PC) ?
Just purchase one and the setup is easy and recorded a few conga drum tracks. Your video really helped me get started and opened my eyes to many of its capabilities. Not bad for $100 bucks
Awesome! Thanks. Needed that info.
One of the best setup guides on youtube! Thanks a lot!
Can I plug in a stereo jack into the mic input and take a feed from my soundboard via headphone out will it record that way?
How do you go about using the audio from the Tazcam on a video you are making off of a phone? Do I need an app or something? Thanks in advance !
Amazing video! I'm waiting for my DR-05X! Just a quick question, what kind of microSD card should I use? Thanks!
Hi would you recommend these settings also for recording vocals for songs?
Any idea on how to use this unit to record a phone conversation from a mobile phone?
Any particular reason you're not simply using a call recording app?
Thanks for the video would you recommend this over the Zoom H1n for recording acoustic guitar music and vocals?
Great review, I'll definitely buy one of these
Great stuff! Thanks a million!
Hi thanks this was very helpful. Do you know about the OverDub option on this device and how can I turn it on or off?
Great share Fam. So if someone has me on a live via UA-cam I can use this for audio?
Hey I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Tascam DR-07X and if it is worth the extra £30 over the DR-05X. This is such a clear concise tutorial and I will watch it again if I decide to buy the Tascam DR-05X instead.
Thanks so much for this, I'm a photographer just branching into video content, so this was educational for me. I need to record young models 2yrs to 16yrs for a young talent agency. Would this unit record their speech from 4 to 6 feet away please or is there a better solution?
