    Hello Curtis and best wishes into 2017 !
    Thanks for all the great videos. I have a suggestion for a future episode: Introduction to boompoles, mounts and blimps/deadcats. It would be great to see like 3 grades : entry level , mid level and pro levels of this equipment. I'm trying to upgrade my "broom stick" boompole to proper setup and can't find a good comprihensive introduction to this setup and how it properly fits together. I will end up probably NTG-3 but that's all I have to go with right now. Anyways Happpy New year!

    Hey Curtis, wondering if you can help me understand something... From what I can see in the Tascam DR10L manual it says it can provide 2v of plug-in power, and from what I see on the Sanken COS 11d specs it says it requires at least 3v-10v of power. Do you know if this affects the Sanken's output/quality? I'm still shopping between the Tascam DR10L/Zoom F2/Tentacle Sync Track E, but would like to add a higher quality lav than the ones that come with those, ie: the Sanken or a Sennheiser MKE 2 or maybe a Countryman or VT500 etc. I'm worried about the power requirements for those lavs paired with these recorders. Wondering if you have already spoken about this in one of your videos or perhaps can run through it quick in an upcoming stream? Thanks so much!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Dave, you can listen to the samples here to see if you think it degrades the audio quality. It does not appear to have damaged my COS-11D.

      @@curtisjudd Yea, I mean, sounds great in your video! I was thinking about this particular matter since watching the announcement stream for the Zoom F2, where someone mentioned it can only provide 2.5v plug-in power and therefore not work with some higher end lavs that require more power, like 5v.. which got me worried about which recorder/lav combo to look at. At least I know the Sanken will work with the Tascam. Thanks again.

    How do the preamps on this compare with the H4n Pro or the DR-05? I'm currently using the H4n Pro and love the audio quality I get (worlds better than my previous DR-05 I used for 2 years). Would've loved to see a preamp comparison like in your other videos, because the form and price of this DR-10L would make me want to get it for an extra lav system.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому +1

      It sounds very similar to the H4n (and all the Zoom recorders) and with about the same self-noise (very little). It is much cleaner than the DR-05 (which I also have).

    • @Pikmeir
      @Pikmeir 7 років тому +1

      Thank you. That's great to hear then. I want an extra lav system that's portable but would only do it if it it's at least better than the DR-05 (which is still nice for the price but not very clean-sounding). Will be adding this to my list :)

    Hello Curtis. I have only just ventured into the world of video by buying a camcorder to document (other than merely by photographs) a trip I will be making to Ireland next Spring. The situation is this. I am taking my mother's ashes for burial and have hired an operatic tenor to sing during the Requiem Mass. The camcorder will be focused on the alter but the tenor will be situated in the choir loft behind the camera. Similarly, I also want to improve the sound quality of the everyday use of the camcorder. I have seen several of your videos and have come up with some alternatives to get the job done without breaking the bank. I was thinking of going with the JK MicJ 044 lavalier for the tenor and either the Rode VideoMic Pro or the Azden SMX-10 shotgun mic for everyday use. The Zoom H1 might be a further step up but that introduces the need for clapping and syncing not to mention added expense. What are your thoughts on this? If you have any suggestions or advice, I would sincerely appreciate your feedback.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      Hi Brian, great that you are planning ahead! How close to the back of the camera will the singer be situated? The JK MicJ's cable is only about 1 - 1.5 meters so not a lot of reach there. Lavalier mics do not tend to do well picking up sound that is far away, really meant to wear directly on the person speaking/singing. The RODE VideoMic Pro would probably be the first thing I'd reach for in this situation and find a way to aim it up at the singer. Assuming you are several meters away from the singer, you'll also pick up the reverence of the cathedral which is great. I hope you all the best!

    • @brianmcallister804
      @brianmcallister804 7 років тому

      Hi Curtis, Thanks for your speedy response. Yes, I thought that there might be a problem with the length of the JK Mic's cable so I thought that perhaps I could find an extension. I'm sure that somewhere in my research I saw a lavalier with a 20' cable. Failing that, I'll go with the Rode. Thanks again for your help.

      Thanks a lot for the info and yet another informative video. While researching the Tascam, I saw that Zaxcom is coming out with a really small recorder as well, the ZFR400. I think you mentioned in one of your videos that firms like Zaxcom are providers professionals use a lot, so I can imagine it will probably be much more expensive than the Tascam. Do you think you'll get a chance to review the ZFR400 in the future?

    Good afternoon Curtis, how comparable is the sound of the new Zoom F2 to the Tascam DR10L?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 роки тому +2

      I didn't have them in my possession at the same time so I never got a chance to compare them side by side. However, I think the bigger factor is the microphone you use. With the Sanken COS-11D, they both sounded better.

    • @usernamenotvisibIe

      @@curtisjudd thanks Curtis, like always, you're a valuable beacon of guidance. I don't have the Sankens but do have a few Countryman B3's...and yes sir, they sound better than the lavs included with the Zoom F2's. Also, when and if ever I get financing for a significant project, you'll be the one I'll be reaching out to hire. Wishful thinking right!

  • @usernamenotvisibIe
    @usernamenotvisibIe 3 роки тому +1

    Curtis, I have a pressing concern...I have seen Countryman B3's being used with the DR10L. If I'm not mistaken, the DR10L has a mic bias output of 2 Volts, do you think this adversely affects the noise floor of recordings with the Countryman B3 as it requires 3 Volts? Please advise.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Javier, good question but I'm not sure of the answer. The Sanken mic I used in this video apparently also needs more than the 2V the Tascam provides. It seemed ok, but that's a subjective assessment.

    • @usernamenotvisibIe
      @usernamenotvisibIe 3 роки тому +1

      @@curtisjudd I just heard of ZOOM's soon to be released F2 which will offer 32-bit float recording...it will also output 2.5volts. Would the 32-bit float affect such mics in any way? Also, what are your thoughts on the F2 and its 32-bit float recording? Gamechanger? Enabler for the inept such as myself? As always, you are top tier, Curtis....thanks.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 роки тому +1

      @@usernamenotvisibIe Hi Javier, I have placed a pre-order for the F2 so that I can review it. 32-bit float with multiple converters doesn't affect the microphone, but most lavalier microphones can limit the dynamic range you can record. However, for spoken word recording, the F2 or the Tentacle Sync Track E (another 32-bit float body pack recorder) with a decent lavalier will not be easy to distort by over modulating. For body pack recording, 32-bit float significantly reduces the risk of distorted/clipped audio. However, it comes at the cost of additional work in post. Also, it does not solve the problem of forgetting to start the recording or accidentally pulling out a cable or detecting any other sort of interference or microphone failure. So it is a step in the right direction rather than a game changer in my little mind. 😀

    hi curtis, your videos have been an invaluable learning source so
    thanks! i have two lavalier mics (sanken cos 11-d and rode lavalier) and
    want to do some videos involving two people cooking and chatting. i was
    thinking of connecting the lavs to two tascam dr-10/zoom h1n or one of
    each. this kind of wired setup fits into my current budget. do you think
    this would work well? also would the audio out of the tascam be better
    than the zoom or are they comparable? it would be a lot cheaper for me
    to get two h1n but if the preamps in the tascam makes worth it, i'd opt
    for the tascam. i think the zoom f1 is a little chunky so unless there's
    a reason why i should go for it, i think i'd rather the tascam dr-10

    • @lucaflores1621
      @lucaflores1621 4 роки тому

      i also can buy one set of a used sennheiser g3 receiver and transmitter for about the same price as the tascam dr-10 at the moment so i'm unsure if i should go for that (which would allow monitoring of one microphone, and i could record to the h1n with the other microphone and wait for another cheap g3 to pop up) or just stick with a wired system. i'm inexperienced so am unsure if this would make syncing in post difficult but also don't mind too much and like learning how to do new things

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 роки тому

      Hi Luca, you could go either way. Note that wireless takes more time to get set, potentially, unless you use it in the same place every time. It definitely gives you the ability to monitor which is good. I guess I'd probably go with the G3. Best wishes!

    I just bought the DR-10L and, while I would give it a demerit for the difficulty I have with the slider for power on/off and record (no fingernails!) I really like the unit. Where it fails for me is not the problem with the DR-10L but probably the lav mic that comes with it. I record motorcycle riding videos for my TexasTwoLane.com UA-cam channel and I'm trying to find ways to reduce wind noise. The mic, with both its supplied windscreen and an extra, dead-cat style muff on it and mounted behind the chin guard of my full-face helmet, has a lot of distortion at 70mph. The face of the helmet is open. The Zoom H1 I had been using did a better job but I had been hoping to improve on that. Up until 60-70mph the audio sounds great from the DR-10L. Then, there's more distortion than wind noise. I've experiment with the settings including the Limiter ON and OFF. Please know that I'm a long-time professional network news cameraman and video editor. You mentioned the Sanken COS-11D. Wow. Really expensive! But, if it was the magic elixir to cure strong wind noise, then I would invest in it if I knew which model worked with the DR-10L. Link to the right one please? Finally, yes, I experimented with different mic gain settings going all the way down to the lowest. Still major distortion, just at a lower level. I have Dual Recording going on as well with the second track set to be -12db down. Any suggestions?

    Hi Curtis! Thanks for a great video AGAIN! This recorder comes with the Tascam TM-10LB microphone which I think gives a nice rich and full sound, BUT unfortunately is very noisy so it needs a lot of post tweaking. I have tried using the Rode-lav that came with my wireless Rodelink but that mike does not have the same rich sound, and it has a major problem with static interference when the cable gets close to the transmitter. Do you know of any third party lav-mic (preferably with a screw on sleeve) in the same price range as these mikes, about 70-90 USD, that I can buy to upgrade both the Tascam and the Rodelink to in order to get rid of the static noise in the Rode, and Lower noise floor in the Tascam?

    Great video! Do you recommend enabling the "Auto Level" and "Limiter" when recording outdoors?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +2

      Hi Luis, I would not recommend using the Auto Level under any circumstances as it has a tendency to lift the noise floor in rather dramatic fashion in between phrases. The limiter is digital so not super helpful, but can save you a little bit of time in post by pre-compressing the transient spikes. But it is still very important to get your gain set correctly with enough headroom for people getting quite loud. Normally, I aim to get the peaks around -18 to -12 at the most. Good luck!

    I have a headset mic and want to only record normal talking voice . I wanted to get either the Sony pcm-a10 or the zoom h6 as these recorders have very low noise floor. I, however, cannot get either of them for some reason. Would you know if the noise floor on the tascam dr-10l body be around the same as that of either the zoom h6 or the sony pcm-a10 ? Secondly , would removing the noise from tascam dr-10l in post production, affect the quality of the voice ?

    Hi Curtis! I have purchased a Tascam DR-10L and I am just getting familiar with it. It really improves my audio...love it!
    I would like to ask a logistical questions of you.
    I currently use my iphone for recording the video (and the audio that goes with it) and then sync my great Tascam audio later with editing software.
    What I do find is that the little Record start/stop control is super tiny and of course the recorder is clipped to by back pocket so it is not easy to access. My inclination is to just leave it on and recording throughout my entire session for efficiency sake. Is this a wise decision? I know that there is the "syncing clap" that needs to happen at the start for easy syncing later on my software. If I chop up the audio and get rid of the unusable recordings, it seems like I will I lose my easy syncing capability.
    Hmmm. What is your suggestion? What do you normally do? Thank you so much!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому

      It isn't easy, but it hasn't created any issues where I could not get them in sync. There are a variety of options to help save time with sync. Most of the major video editing apps can automatically sync the video with the audio clip one by one IF the camera recorded good reference audio. Pluraleyes can make it even faster, again, if the camera captured good reference audio. Timecode generators are the most efficient tools for automating sync in post, but also cost the most. Here's one example: ua-cam.com/video/o36XYOPp0BE/v-deo.html

The reason over traditional podcast mics is that my guests will not be creators and I want as natural a conversation as possible without a big mic in their face. Curtis, Last week I had two Tascam DR-10L's connected to two men outdoors standing 5 feet from one another. Both settings in the DR-10L's
    were identical internally. When I brought the audio tracks from both recorders into Davinci Resolve 16 there was a pre-echo and sync issue
    when I wanted to get both people's sound levels equal. I synced up individually both individuals precisely to the audio, but when I try to blend
    them together no matter if I line them both up automatically or manually I still get a very annoying pre-echo combined with everything being
    off sync. I can only use the sound of one of the individuals, but this presents a new problem, since both people are 5 feet apart the sound
    of the person's track I choose to use speaks louder than the other person. I wanted both person's volume to be optimum with this terrible
    echo and or sync problem.
    Have you experienced this issue? Can two or more people have these recorders attached and bringing them into a timeline won't present
    an audio problem?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 роки тому

      Hi, it sounds like you may be getting some mic bleed - a common problem with omni-directional lavaliers. In post, you'll want to cut out the mic bleed parts (the part of the track for the person not currently talking) to avoid that echo. This is not unique to the Tascam, it is a just the laws of physics. Best wishes!

    • @TheShabazzProduction
      @TheShabazzProduction 4 роки тому

      @@curtisjudd Thanks Curtis, this is the best explanation I got so far. Those omni mikes do have a wide
      pick-up pattern. Trying to lower the track will still be impossible, because the outdoor city sounds passers-by, vehicles passing will still present the problem even if I attempt to lower the voice of the other person.
      My option I believe is to purchase the Boya BY-WM8 Pro -k2 DUAL Wireless lab system, at least I think
      regardless of the lavaliers pick up pattern and no matter of the proximity of two people standing near each
      other the fact that both transmitters will be going into one receiver, this mic bleed should be eliminated.
      Am I correct?

    Hi Curtis, if someone already has a couple good lavs (AT899, B6) - what is the difference in the DR-10L vs. just plugging those into, say a DR-05 / DR-22L?? Doesn't the DR-05 provide "plug-in" power for lavs?? Aside from the size and feature set, not sure I'm seeing the $200 price tag.
    By the way, the Tascam lav sounds just as good or better than the Sanken (never been a fan of the COS-11D, plus it is overpriced).

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      Hi, yes, the DR-05 provides plug-in power. My tests suggest that the microphone preamplifier on the DR-10L is improved over the DR-05 in terms of self noise performance (less hiss). I haven't used the DR-22 so I'm not sure how it compares to that. I think the price is justified in cases where you need a smaller device (e.g., hiding the recorder on a bride for a wedding shoot). The safety track recording at lower gain feature is also big. I don't recall seeing that option on the DR-05.
      I wouldn't suggest that one cannot make good recordings with the DR-05 or 22, but in cases where a smaller recorder is needed and the safety track feature would be helpful, the 10L is worth a look.

The Spec sheet for this mic requires 3-10v but most common aaa are only 1.5v? I saw in the spec sheet from the tascam an option for mics without their own power supply name mic bias. Hi, good question. While the DR-10L is powered by a 1.5V AAA battery, if you turn on bias power for a mic (most lavalier mics need this power and it is also sometimes called plug-in power - 3 - 10V) the device actually converts the power sent to the mic so that it receives the power it needs. Voltage can change across a circuit designed to do that much like you can change water pressure in plumbing using a special coupling. I hope that makes sense.

    I have budget to buy 2 Tascam DR-10L or... 1 Tascam DR-10L + 1 Zoom H4n Pro. I need these to make interviews, most of the time with 2 persons at the same time. What would you commend me to do?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      If the plan is to use lavalier mics, two DR-10Ls should do the job nicely. Good luck!

    Hey Curtis well done, thorough review as always - thanks. One question: what's your opinion on this Tascam unit vs. the Little DARing vs. the Rode Smart Lav with an iPhone. I've been using the SmartLav with an older iPhone 5c and the Rode recording app and have been getting excellent results for about two years (I have a couple of Sennheiser wireless units that have been collecting dust for a while now). I'm looking to expand and get an additional unit to add to my current single mic set up. Anyway just wondering what your thoughts were on the matter.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      Hi Frank, I find the smartLav+ and phone to be a great solution for v-logging and things of that nature, but when it comes to paid jobs, I rather prefer some of the additional features on the dedicated audio recorders like the Tascam and Little DARling. The first and most useful of these features is the locking microphone plug. I don't want a groom to accidentally pull the mic plug out of the recorder and not realize it until its too late. The dual level recording feature is also a great feature to give you options when doing paid jobs. Overall, one can make great recordings with any of these, but when it is a paid job I'm working on, I shy away from the phone option. I hope that makes sense and best wishes!

    Curtis did you like the lavalier mic that comes with it? is it a condenser mic? or you have other recommendation?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      The included mic is decent. It introduces a little bit of noise, but you'd probably need to spend somewhere around $200 to get a mic that is significantly better in my experience.

    Hey Curtis! Just picked up one of this after watching your review a while back actually. Have my first event tomorrow. Am wondering if you think auto level or mid-level...both with the limiter on...would be the best option? Got an opinion? Thx!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому

      Hi Jeff, I would do a sound check and watch the meter while adjusting the input level so that it peaks at about -18 to -12 dB. Good luck!

    Man, I wish I could get a device as small as this for no more than $99. I really hope a disruptive company like Aputure comes out of left field and releases a competing, more inexpensive device. (The Zoom H1 is nice and small and cheap, but this form factor would be sweet.)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      I could see someone doing it without a lavalier mic, but to get a mic and recorder of this grade for $99, that would be quite a feat. But then again, we used to think it impossible to make a stereo field recorder with quality preamps for less than $1000 USD.

    I primarily use this mic as backup on a wedding day, but I've found that when vows or toasts are being projected over a speaker, even when it's a good distance away, this lav likes to pick up that audio more than the person's natural voice... have you run into this issue at all? I've tested it against my RodeLink wireless system in the same situations and the Rodes perform much better...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 роки тому

      I don't shoot weddings anymore so I haven't found myself in this situation. Thanks for sharing - might be worth creating a video demonstrating this issue. Thanks!

    hey Curtis, think you could review the Sanken CS3E shotgun mic? thinking of making the leap, heard it's got great reach and fairly good indoor performance (though I already have an MKH-50 on the way). love your channel man.

    Was looking at getting a Lectro PDR because it is Lectro and is timecode jammable. But, your review makes me think as rarely as I would need a no RF solution, I would be better off with this Tascam and let post deal with sync. Thanks for the review.

    My 2 cents: Run the headphone out into a wireless transmitter, and you can monitor/record to external unit.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 років тому

      Interesting. Not sure the headphone out is up to the recording quality standards of most that will use this type of device, but good idea for monitoring remotely!

      How would you set this up? My big concern on this product is making sure the recording is happening.
