Lea/Leah THANK you for your video. Your voice is so kind and relaxing. I am a new homeowner and have to change my locks today. I am SO happy I came across YOU. I appreciate your tone and DETAIL. Those little things you mentioned are a BIG deal to me. I have subscribed because I feel Might be pulling your channel up often. I have to change the overhead fan in the bathroom soon. Gotta get past the door knob first. 😂. After watching this I feel less stressed about it. Thank you ♥️

In ALL the supposed 'professional' videos I watched before finding your video, NOT one of those mentioned the beveled edge. One video installed it backwards. I looked at the manual that shows bevel out. Thank you for teaching us the RIGHT way to install this knob!!

Short, sweet, to the point, and includes the “watch out for this & that” parts.
T H O S E are the little aggravating parts of installation that makes people chuck tools/parts against the wall damaging sheetrock which adds more time & money to the job- LOL

Thank you. The "pro" who installed my new door and doorknob obviously didn't make sure to get the screws in the holes because my doorknob came off in my hands. I am not a handy person, but your video helped me get the job done. Thank you!

Thank you Leah! Was able to do this and put in a deadbolt today.
One trick I can share that helped me during that last tricky part of aligning the screws of the interior knob to the exterior knob was to secure the exterior knob in the right position with painter's tape. Like having an extra pair of hands to hold it still. Made all the difference!

Needless to say, the knob kept falling off. I watched your video, took a deep breath, and miracle of miracles I got both screws in and tightened! It works again! Thank you for simple instructions that gave me the courage to try one last time.

I'm a guy and am not real mechanically inclined so I really appreciate you stating which side the lock goes on becuz my lock was opposite yours so I had to see if I flipped it that it would still work opposite the beveled part...it did . You laughed as you pointed it out but understand, the little details you point out help all of your listeners. Thanks again

One thing to note is that the bevel shouldn't necessarily face the exterior. I did that at first and it didn't work and I had to restart. It needs to face whichever way the door closes. Typically, doors open inwards, but if you have a door that opens outward and closes inward (like I do) then the bevel will be facing the wrong way and the door won't latch. Other than that, great tutorial!

Thanks for such clear & simple directions! Being ridiculously broke means I gotta be a successful DIYer whether I want to or not (really, I do; it gave me SUCH a buzz when I fixed my dryer, esp after my neighbor swore if he couldn't figure it out, I'd sure never be able to...HA HA HA). So after the dryer, the doorknob seemed like it oughta be cake. It was, thanks in part to you, esp the "obvious" reminders that could be easy to forget (like which side the beveled part aims)...and would mean that I'd have had to redo the whole thing if I'd gotten it backwards, & that would've been hard to do while slapping myself in the forehead the whole time.
So: locksmith charge would've been $175. My cost: 8.95 for the new doorknob kit, 10 minutes' effort (not counting the vid). Another HAHAHA to the world, and thank you again!! I'll come here first next time I have to fix anything. I put your link on my Fb page too, which means that all 3 people who look at it occasionally may be coming here ;-) You may want to prepare your server for the flood.
    Bless you, SJD!

I was about to have a complete meltdown when replacing an entry door knob. I was totally ignorant of the back stop adjustment (part of the fine print on the installation instructions). Jane thank you very much. You explained everything perfectly. I ran into some problems but not because of yours instructions as they were perfect. My issue was 2 fold. 1st since I was changing my br door from an indoor lockable to a keyed entry the design was slightly different. long story short I basically just had to modify the holes to fit the cylinder and create an inlay for the cylinder plate. I think that's what it's called I'm not sure but you probably know what I mean but your instructions gave me the basics to be confident in taking on the task so thank you very much.

I am in my seventies and I have a terrible time lining up the final screws to complete installation. Here is a little trick I discovered. Before I install the inside lock part, I put two farmer's matches in the holes just enough to hold the match. They fit perfectly. Then I put the lock part on and tape it to the door with a wide painter's tape (wide). Your holes are lined up. Pull one match stick and insert the screw. Pull the other match and complete installing the last screw. 'WORKS FOR ME'

Thank you for your video. I installed a door lock and I had accidentally reversed the beveled edge and couldn't figure out why the door wouldn't stay. Your video helped me realize what I did.
    Thanks!

The problem with putting the beveled edge of the latch facing outwards is that anyone can defeat this lock by forcing something between the door and the frame pushing on this beveled edge forcing it in and opening the door. Putting the latch the other way gives only a flat surface and nothing to push against.

IF you are talking about forcing in something like a credit card to shimmy the lock, that does not work on modern locks

@@MrUsaer I think you'll find it actually does. Curved side inwards ALWAYS on an exterior door 👍🏻

    • @fastbyte4583
      @fastbyte4583 5 років тому

@@MrUsaer It actually will work because the vast majority of people dont know how to actually install the striker plate for a locked doorknob. That little pin that is behind the flat portion of the latch needs to be depressed when the door it closed or else anybody can shim the lock.

Installed as you specified but had to take it all apart and reinstall as Thick Side of the bolt had to face in opposite direction in order for the knob to work. Thick side faces towards handle with lock in it. Enjoyed your spirit though and the rest of your directions were on target.

A warning to a certain few viewers: these instructions are for MOST doorknobs. If I paid a little more attention I probably would have realized from the start that my doorknobs were not just a quick swap. But I went ahead and took them off and discovered that the doorknob holes were about 1/2 inch (the doorknobs in my house are probably 50 years old). I decided to not try and tackle drilling new holes. I just tried to lubricate to eliminate the squeaks and reinstall, but even that was a nightmare (but my nightmare is beyond what needs to be said in this comment). Anyway, always clear, simple and to-the-point videos on this channel. No criticism of the video. Just a caution that if you have old doorknobs they might not be compatible with modern instructions.

You make it look so easy!! I think I need to try this. I'm hopeless when it comes to pretty much any house-related repairs, so I'm slightly terrified. But my garage door lock is broken, and I just bought a new lawnmower that I don't want to get stolen. Since I don't have any money, I just resigned myself to lugging the lawnmower up and down the basement steps to keep it safe! But I just might try to do it myself. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Thank you. I have to do this today. But I think the long screws are recommended for the plate so it's harder to kick in.

I can't put that piece 1:32 into my door. The door hole is too small, any suggestions? Should I get a rubber mallet and start pounding till it gets stuck in there?
