- 🏃 Hagos Gebrhiwet Runs 12:36.72 to Win Epic 5000m in Oslo & Move to #2 All-Time
Yomif Kejelcha was 2nd in 12:38.95 as two men broke 12:40 in the same race for the first time ever
✨ Hagos Gebrhiwet ran 12:36.73 on Thursday evening at the Bislett Games in Oslo to win an incredible 5,000-meter race and give Joshua Cheptegei’s 12:35.36 world record a scare. Gebrhiwet’s time - which included a 3:55 final 1600 and a 54.99 last lap - was the second-fastest ever run and broke Kenenisa Bekele’s Ethiopian record of 12:37.35, a mark that had stood as the world record for 16 years until Cheptegei broke it in 2020.
Gebrhiwet had to run fast as the performances behind him were spectacular. Yomif Kejelcha, who pushed the pace throughout the final mile, was second in 12:38.95, moving to #4 on the all-time list - and marking the first time two men had broken 12:40 in the same race. World Cross Country champion Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda was 3rd in a pb of 12:40.96, after which there was a big gap to Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo in 4th (12:48.10).
In all, 12 of the top 13 men set personal bests, including national records for Ethiopia (Gebrhiwet), Guatemala (Luis Grijalva, 12:50.58), Switzerland (Dominic Lobalu, 12:50.90), Sweden (Andreas Almgren, 12:50.94), France (Jimmy Gressier, 12:54.97), and South Africa (Adriaan Wildschutt, 12:56.67). One of the few men not to PR was the world record holder Cheptegei, who faded over the final laps and was only 9th in 12:51.94.
Overall, the top 13 men broke 13:00, tying the record for most in a single race set in Florence last year.

The most epic 5000m race ever , 3 athletes under 12:40 mark and hagos looks younger than ever. Wao 😱
Yes Hagos Gebrihwet still amazing, incredible time and incedible athlete.
Who was the third athlete under 12:40???
Not sure how people think that this will affect Jakob. I believe he can still run this fast
The third athlete was at 12:40min
Only two athletes ran under 12:40, the third to finish was Jacob Kiplimo@@carlpeterkirkebo2036
Si hubiese ganado con un picinaso 😅
This timing is unbelievable 12:36:73. The top 3 in this race were just too good. I am still shocked by the timing. Incredible.
This race was better than cheptigei's world record because gebrehewit ran 55 sec final lap something similar to championship finals final lap time while cheptigei ran 59s
みんな凄すぎる!!
13分切りのタイムでもトップとはかなり離されるレースは初めて観ました!
Congrats to the Ethiopian 💕
That last lap surge was epic!
This season might be even more epic than last year, cant wait! The problem is how do you choose a favourite, anyone can beat anyone at any given day. These athletes in the race will bring out the best in Jakob
Jakob days are numbered!
i am not surprised if athletes register the fastest time now adays. with the aid of this technology, kenenisa bekele and tirunesh dibaba would have completly distroy the world records.
5k is such a brutal run/race!
All these athletes are just phenomenal every last one of them!!
20% genetic 80% hard work
And Ingebrigtsen is supposed to beat all these guys in Paris??? Come on
World lead was 4 seconds slower last year. And 4 people under 12:42. And Ingebrigsten easily won at worlds. Not saying Jakob has the gold in his pocket already but it seems like we're not in for a 12:36 at the olympics.
He beat em all last time.
@@archlutesmith LAST TIME!
@@archlutesmithwe're talking about this year. He won't be able to hang with those guys. But say he was sick or something like he always does when he loses.
@@Ekzotika-g8w This aged well.
What an exciting race!

ETHIOPIAN STYLE
Kejelcka has always been a great runner, but has never developed a kick.
He has an insane kick, he just led a lot of this race. Definitely an above average kick among the professional circuit at the moment, after all he did grow up racing Mo Farah and having a strong kick was somewhat of a necessity against him. He only lost by 2 seconds after leading a lot of the race too.
Hagos is peaking at the right time and he is the man to beat at Paris Olympics 2024 5,000 meters..
1 of the greatest 5000 races of all time.
Well done Hagos 🟢🟡🔴
Atletas de outro planeta 😮
I think it was too late by the time he realized WR was within reach. If he kicked at 600 he would’ve smashed it. What a performance
Perfect conditions for a fast long distance race. No sun, no wind, temperature around 15-17 degrees, and a high quality field with motivated runners and strong pace makers.
Basically, the new WR as far as I'm concerned - the other was run under laboratory conditions for heaven's sake! Love this runner cos he don't have great running style and he looks like he's struggling.......and yet he absolutely cained them other guys that the commentators couldn't stop raving about 🤣
Not basically the new world record, apart from anything else Cheptegei had a solo run for almost the whole 2nd half
The only difference here was the wavelight pace, and he wasn't even within a second of the world record
What are lab conditions? According to you, an outdoor 400m track
To be honest the conditions for cheptegei’s WR were a little more difficult, he did a lot of it solo
Never mind! what we know is Cheptegei is the official World Record Holder. Why didn't Hagos do it under those artificial conditions? Very easy to criticise as usual.
was that a 52 second final lap? unreal!
about 55sec
well, slightly below
54.99 lap
Men what a tromedous run!!
BEST TEAMS ETHIOPIANS
Pacemaker is on point.
Wow!!!!! But it’s too bad Jakob wasn’t in race. Jakob would have won 🥇
Yes, he could have won the race. I believe he can achieve an amazing time in the 5000m. He is consistent and knows how to pace long-distance races.
Probably prep for 5000m Olympics
😂😂😂😂😂
not a chance, he only good at 1500m
@@Heysuppppp doesn’t correct statement and that’s a fact!!!!
if he start sprinting 150 meters before, he break the world record easily
It's not that easy going as fast as he already was.
@@phillipd190 looked like had a bit more in the tank idk why
