They actually have the technology to give him a more normal-sounding voice, but he declined because he now identifies with the robotic one we’re all familiar with
I think Karl seems to be more of an introvert, which explains why he thinks whole sentences in his head and, practically, has conversations with himself. I often do that. Introverts tend to sit back and think.
Someday, many years from now, Karl Pilkington will be remembered as one of the greatest innovative thinkers of our generation... Not sure whether to shake my head or bust out laughing.
6:38 - 6:47 May just be my favourite moment in the entire series. The banality of both the description and of the moment itself. The fact it's just four men brought together by happenstance in an otherwise empty bar with nothing better or more entertaining to do than just watch a Cat do Cat stuff; alongside the blank and somewhat disappointed look on their faces as they watch and drink. All of that punctuated by Ricky's appropriate laughter at the situation Karl happened to live through and conjure up a wonderful image through the bland language which was effortlessly delivered by Steve. Just ten seconds of hilarious humanity.
inner discourse is a normal occurrence and a helpful tool in problem solving for humans. if ricky and steve don't have inner discourse, they're the weird ones. everyone i know says they think in sentences. it's not like it's a constant thing but i can turn it on or off so to speak.
Jaqen H'ghar they didn't say conversing with yourself was weird, it's the complete sentence part that's off. And it is. Usually thinking in complete sentences hints at a developmental disability, mental illness, or dissociation, as does dreaming in third person instead of first person.
Cory Mck My bad for assuming people would understand what I was talking about. There’s a difference in intentionally vs unintentionally thinking in complete sentences. What I was trying to suggest is that, if you are incapable of thinking without complete sentences, that’s a sign that something is very wrong. A normal brain is able to think in concepts, so unless you are intentionally forming complete sentences with your thoughts, that isn’t something that should be happening.
i love how the format of the segment takes shape in the first few minutes. ricky has a go at reading but isn't fluent enough because his thinking about the diary throws off his delivery, then steve takes over the reading with much better rhythm leaving ricky to react as the audience hears it.
@@noahmay7708 Ricky is always so quick to judge him and call him "An idiot" or in his Karl's predictions, "not gonna happen, shut up!", yet it did with VR or smart watches. Karl just finds it hard to explain things, Ricky is often so unnecessary mean and dismissive not giving Karl any time to explain and have a conversation.
there is nothing better in world to Cheer you up then the Ricky Gervais show, xfm, podcasts, cartoons. fucking genius these are the cure for depression
Richard Feynman, the greatest physicist of the 20th century, thought in words and not conceptually. There's an audio interview where he discusses how weird he thinks this is.
This is honestly one of the best shows I have ever seen, Its so flippen funny!!! I also love how they actually animate other characters with thier voices when they are telling stories, I wish this was on the radio or tv back in Canada!
Love how ricky always treats carl as stupid but outs himself as not having an internal monologue and clearly doesn't know where hawkin's from but just guesses he's from oxford or cambridge because there are universities there (accidentally being right).
3:34 the darts part killed killed me. And that thinker position that karl makes at 8:08 made me remember Lenny from the simpsons at the Oscars ahahahahaha
Not gonna lie, I would actually listen to Stephen Merchant reading an audio book. He doesn't stumble, does hesitate, and the flow is very soothing and clean.
Karl is a true anomaly. He’s like a truly insightful and intuitive idiot. If his iq was higher he might be an actual genius whereas some people who do have a high iq don’t have Karl’s insightful ness and couldn’t be a genius. So In a sense Karl is a smart guy just in his own hilariously entertaining way
Karl is one of those persons with a beautiful mind. He has absoloutly no censorship. He tells it straight out like it is.. That is why he's so bloody brilliant!

It's a pretty even split, some people do, some don't, but because it's something we never really talk about, it's mindblowing when you find out that other people don't think to themselves the same way you do. Aphantasia is another good one. Most people can visualise a picture in their head but some people can't. Most people who can't don't find out for years because they think they're normal.
I've been listening to the old Xfm shows (which weren't adapted in the animated series), and it's fun to compare how different these three were back then, compared to the later shows that this series was adapted from. For instance, it was a lot more common for Ricky to get excited about things to do with Karl, the way he does in this episode when he hears about his diary. It was pretty sweet, actually. They were nicer to him back then as well. And Karl seemed to be more lighthearted; his voice sounded a bit happier, and he even laughed sometimes. (In the animated series he only laughs once and it's treated as a big deal even by Ricky.) It makes the later shows kind of depressing by comparison.
I hear ya. I too have listened to almost all the xfm shows lately and it was all a lot more natural back then and not as much the 2 on 1 system that it later became. Karl was certainly not the fool they tried to make him out to be though and eventually worked it to his advantage. I've no doubt they did actually think a lot of Karl though, it just never came across that way later on, you're right.
What I love about this show is that Karl presents and talks about stuff that, in his mind, is real, normal and makes sense, yet Ricky and Steve just fall about laughing. The 2 go together hand in hand :)

"How does it work?"
"You pop it on your wrist."

@Marshall Carwood just so you know, I did read this in Karl's voice. Brilliant
I love how ecstatic Ricky is when first hearing about this, like he discovered gold, which of course he did because Karl's diary is brilliant.
It has made Ricky alot of money.
