Their on-air squabbles in the XFM years led to that. I squabble with my best mates. It's fun. The podcast wouldn't work nowadays, because Karl has learned so much although he always had a wisdom about him which superseded the average Manc. But he's blossomed too much now to take the piss any more. "Moaning Of Life" and "Sick of It" were both fantastic television shows with no involvement from Merchant or Gervais, much as I love them.

@@fhucko I believe that analogy has been proven wrong. I never believed it. Always thought it was b******* I'm firmly behind Karl Pilkington there's no way that a monkey can type that. I don't care if it has until the end of time it will never do it. Just because there is a possibility something can happen does not mean it can happen even given an infinite amount of time

M the analogy is possibly better suited to the “infinite amount of monkeys” side as it is more understandable. Think about it like this if it is an infinite amount of monkeys the works will be produced straight away as everything ever written will be typed whereas with a singular monkey it will not be produced straight away but eventually even if it takes years it will be typed due to the nature of infinity

He said it took them a month sometimes to write 30 mins of script for The Office, so how long would it take them to write 2 hours of drivel every week for xfm? He even challenged the person doubting him to call in with 5 random questions to ask Karl. (the guy never did). Karl is genuine. Another way you can tell is look at those times he's been on the British morning shows. The way they laugh at his comments you can tell they are unexpected.
Also, Gervais said, if they had created a character as good as Karl Pilkington would they have let him do his own show Idiot Abroad? Hell no, he would be kept under wraps and used for their own tv shows.
