This is probably my favorite Disney villain song of all time; the way that the chorus's counterpoint acts as his inner conscience that he ultimately rejects - as he sings "It's not my fault / I'm not to blame / It is the gypsy girl / The witch who set this flame" the chorus is singing "Mea culpa / mea culpa / mea maxima culpa" (my fault, my fault, my most grievous fault"). This song vividly demonstrates the nature of sin: knowing that it's wrong and doing it anyway. Frollo embraces his lust for Esmeralda and the whole of Paris burns in his attempt to satisfy it.
Don't forget his dehumanization of her, his treatment of her also comes from his bigotry against Romani, he sees them as vermin, and therefore her as someone who's only act of agency could be tempting him to sin, rather than as a person.
I also just noticed that at the end, when Frollo sings "God have mercy on her, God have mercy on me," the chorus is singing "kyrie eleison" which is another really common line heard in church music and is literally "Lord have mercy." I love how that throw both of those in there.
In way it's good illustration of the difference of the "virtue" of men like Frollo and that of true virtue. Frollo's virtue is show to be mask to hide their inner weakness, it's kind of ironic that it is Esmeralda who shows true virtue (that of kindness to be exact).
Can we take a second to appreciate this masterpiece and the incredible interpretation of Colm? But above all the struggle of a native English speaker in pronouncing the "R" of Maria in Latin. Great job Colm!
The included Latin in the beginning, the gravel of Frollo, the backing vocals...everything is P E R F E C T I O N. Tony Jay would've been exceptionally proud
I already knew about Colm's vocal skills, but here we see some actor's play as well. It's amazing that I definitely heard not a 20+ y.o. singer, but a significantly older character.

This is incredibly good, Colm! I'd definitely pay good money to see you on stage as Frollo! The quiet bit after the "Protect me, Maria" portion is honestly one of my favorites, because in both the movie AND the musical, it's the guard coming to tell Frollo that Esmerelda has escaped, right in the middle of him praying for deliverance. He got exactly what he asked for: a divine rescue from the situation, and a chance to be a righteous man. He had it in the EXACT moment he'd wished, and still chose to throw it away because of his lust and fury, declaring instead "be mine or you will burn". just the opening knocked me speechless since most people when doing covers for this song, forget the latin from the clergy at the start. that little detail alone made me so happy and rekindles my love of the latin language. keep it up, Colm!!!!
And they should film a Disney live action remake but with the original ending from the book. 😈 Frollo has Esmeralda hanged, then Quasimodo grabs Frollo and throws him to his death.
@@joshkonnelyFTW If you have not heard of them already, I recommend the stage play versions of Disney’s Hunchback produced in Berlin, Papermill Playhouse, La Jolla Playhouse, etc. Besides adding new songs/scenes, more explicitly committing to the gargoyles being imaginary (or replacing them entirely with imaginary saints who talk to Quasimodo), and making Frollo a former/actual priest, they also changed the ending so that Esmeralda does not survive her exposure to the fire and Quasimodo directly throws Frollo off the cathedral.

It is the gypsy girl the witch who sent this flame (mea maxima culpa)
It's not my fault (mea culpa)
If in God's plan (mea culpa)
He made the Devil so much stronger than a man (mea maxima culpa)
Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone
Hellfire
Darkfire
Now gypsy, it's your turn
Choose me or your pyre
Be mine or you will burn
Kyrie eleison
