Very good information here. I collect scrap for a local charity, I passed on a couple of starters to him a month back. I really wanted to take them apart to get more money out of it but I didn't have the time. Now I don't feel so bad about it. Crap shoot I guess. This week I found a double copper microwave transformer, but last week I actually found an aluminum armature.

Great video!! Thanks for making it. I have 4 or 5 of this type of starter I quit literally pulled from a field of a guy who repaired cars himself. And I've been debating the merits of taking the time to fully disassembling them. Now that I know there's a category for selling them whole, I'll save myself the time and also make more than I would have simply tossing them with the shred. Starters and alternators almost always sell for more unprocessed. That's because scrapyards aren't selling them to companies to extract the metal but likely they're going to Mexico where they are rebuilt and sold as refurbished units.

The copper contacts will also come free from the rotor with the help of a screwdriver. Not only will this free up all the copper on the rotor, it will also make it #1 instead of #2 copper.
