There are two types of team people like in Sports. Winners and underdogs, the fact that England managed to be neither of these two is one of the reasons why no neutral friends like them.
@@garruksson Portugal have won something in my lifetime, so I would consider them Winners. Netherlands are underdogs, because they hope to win but never do. England never win but their media is so sure they will, that I can't call them underdogs.
Personally that s why I like the England NT (as a Romanian). Feels like the most relatable of the major nations with that hope of “maybe we win this time, look, we aren’t losing to teams like Iceland anymore…nah, not this time. But look, next time the final is being played at Wembley, surely now…oh, it was so close, just a penalty loss in the final, fuckk”. The fact that there is always a genuine chance for them to win yet they haven’t done so since 1966 is insane to me, feel like they deserve to get a trophy too. Then again, this time we did qualify so fuck everyone else, go Romania!🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴🇷🇴
England have less European championships than the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Greece, yet their fans act like it is their god given right to win it every single time.
The English media is the issue, not the national team. Anytime a foreign team does well against England there is never praise given to the opposing side, only excuses for the poor performance of the England squad. Almost like it is impossible to accept that any foreign side is better. No, it must have just been a poor performance for the squad.
No one is forcing people from other countries to read or watch English media though? I don't get why people care so much when you can just watch your own country's sports media and not face the same problems
@@qwertymehta8342 During the last world cup before the France - England match, the English media kept saying Hugo Lloris was the weak point of the team, and in France, a lot of media were talking about it. There was another thing just before the same match done by English media ( the Sun) ads with Rashford and another with Walker. "Ahead of the World Cup meeting between England and France this evening, they have placed an ad near major landmarks in Paris to warn the French that they are about to be knocked out. It features hilarious puns such as 'it's Gaul over' and some badly translated French phrases. It has been about as well received as you would expect, both by France and England fans." Just to say, even if you just listen to your country's media, you can still hear things said and done by the English press
believe me. its not the media. i love the premier league and their fans. but i hate the england fans. they are not funny, they are not humble, they simply try to feel better by putting down others. I'm Finnish. I have nothing against England, it is a lovely country, and you have a skilled national team. But good lord are some of the fans, which i presume to be a very vocal minority, absolutely insufferable. Arrogance, entitlement, disrespect towards other nations, hooliganism, you name it. This is not helped by the fact that the internets primary language is english so one will see more England fans being fools than of any other country. Personally i understand "it's coming home" being ironic, but not all England fans seem to do so. It's such a shame as i would look England as a sympathetic side to root for otherwise.
Yes yes, how DARE england fans support their own national team!!!!!! I'm willing to bet these "hooligans" you're whining about probably were just normal fans daring to answer back to the unfair relentless attacks that england fans get from the stinking jealous masses
As an Irishman, we obviously have a lot of traditional reasons to hate England. But honestly our own national team are so boring and uninspired its often more fun to just root for whoever England play against, usually as a wind up.
@@Vizeh Not really because its a totally one way thing. English people aren't bothered in the slightest about supporting whoever is playing Ireland, or Scotland. It's pathetic they're still trying to force this rivalry when the English are so apathetic towards them.
When you read "we hate your fans" it resonated with me. You see, I'm from Croatia. Very touristy country mind you. And we are Balkan ppl meaning not posh by any standard. But. When you go to quaint Dalmatian town and hear a rowdy bunch, it's most likely English. When you see someone pissed to the point of hurling in the same kind of street - yup, prolly English. Someone filmed a person defecating at1 in the morning in front of someone's door. Ends up on morning press portals. Heavy British accent. I know it's a minority of you guys. But it's very vocal. Locals in Dalmatia openly hate young British tourists. Do you blame them?
True as a german, everything I see of most fans is a great atmosphere and sportsmanship, and then the first thing I saw from english fans are arrogant unprovoked slurs. the first video of English people I saw was just English fans throwing benches and chairs at each other and just vandalizing a bar/public viewing stand they make it very hard for themselves to be likeable
As an Englishman my answer to "Do you blame them?" is simple. Absolutely not. I completely understand it and in these regards our nation needs to accept, our drinking culture is very unhealthy and a source of shame. I feel it is changing somewhat though with the youngest adults, as their drinking culture is seemingly improving. The aim no longer seems to be to get absolutely smashed. They seem to have a degree of respect for the need to respect the negatives of alcohol. It actually took me until my 30's, and an eastern European girlfriend, to really take stock of idiotic my lack of moderation was.
As a portuguese, I don't dislike England nor the National Team, but I do dislike most of your media, and I do think they have somewhat of a responsability in how people behave. The english media always hypes things up in a similar way the american media says "we're the best country in the world". And btw, the trashing of the streets is not something that only happens when there's football matches, I feel like it's culture by now, like tourism plays a part in everyone hating you guys, at least every summer here in Portugal, especially in Algarve, there's always issues between the police and young english man because they tend to break windows, cafes, chairs, etc. I do have to say though, the older english people who come here, and even choose to retire here, tend to behave.
So true. Honestly, this video massively underplays the impact of the media, which is a bit surprising, when the (Western) media quite literally control the world.
It's the English drinking culture in general that is our issue. Qatar WC was the only time in the history of the competition where an England fan wasn't arrested, and we can't pretend like the key factor wasn't the alcohol ban. Me and my mates booked a villa in Croatia last summer and at the end the host said her Mother wanted her to reject our booking when she saw we were a group of 9 English people, she was worried we'd trash the house. Which we didn't, and she apologised for her mother's prejudice.
I do sympathise with that lady, thanks to the appalling behaviour of too many English people, but that just increases the responsibility of the rest to behave better and change perceptions. I remember going on a preseason tour of Belgium (I'm an Everton fan), and we arrived at the hotel between staff shifts, so there weren't many people around to book us in or make sure rooms were ready. The hotelier was very fearful that a coach load of English football fans would give him trouble, but by the end of the week we'd become such friends that he gave us a crate of embossed beer glasses to take home and hoped he'd see us again the next year. It really doesn't take much effort.
@@Stephen-lx9nm you're* you 5 year old. And I'm not speaking for anyone, I'm stating a very obvious fact, is it a shock that they went ahead and put a drinking ban on ONLY our first game at the Euros?

@Jack-dv6oi think the issue with British media talking about England 97% of the time is that there is other home nations that never get mentioned. Even when you watch a Scotland game they talk about England it's insane

As an Englishman, it basically boils down to this: English people can't hold their drink as well as they think. There's this expectation in British society where to have fun doing anything as an adult, alcohol has to be involved. This bleeds into football and tourism in general, and makes us look like complete cockends to the international community as it's often their only experience with English people.
Listen. I have just started the video, so be advised that what I say may be addressed in the video. But this is my take. I am an American, and our country gets hate in our direction, although for slightly different and similar reasons. The different reason is because we call it soccer and have many other sports more popular in our country (yet other countries do as well but don't get the hate) and thus they think we don't respect the sport enough. But that I think is more of a tool/outlet for expressing anti Americanism. Why? Because, whether you like America or not, the USA is the big dog in the world. The dominant nation. And yes, sometimes we Americans go a little overboard in our patriotism. But we have been repaid by hate that goes way beyond balancing that out. On the balance of the good vs bad a World Hegemon does in history, the US is very good as a World Hegemon. Now why do I mention that? Because I think that this dynamic, of using soccer/football as a tool/outlet for hate against the US because of the US' status and perceived arrogance, applies in some ways to the UK, England specifically. Why? Because before the US, the UK was the top dog in the world. The UK, especially England, had this sense of being a nation above other nations (not in the racial sense like certain others, but in the "our combination of power, democracy, accomplishments etc make us different from other nations). I mean the US originally was part of the British Empire, so maybe makes sense. Of course, the UK hasn't been the top dog in the world like the US is now, in about a century, so that hatred about that is a little bit subsided. But even with that, the UK has a legacy that makes it like the US in thinking its above other nations, and even today is one of the top powers in the world. That I think provides the foundation. But of course, the thing that makes people go into overdrive in disliking England in soccer/football, is the fact that England is historically HEAVILY underachieved, for a nation that is one of the biggest, wealthiest in Europe, and the birthplace of modern soccer/football. Yet the way the fans act, you know that if England EVER win, you'll never hear the end of it. It's like you constantly hear about how great England are, yet in history, England has made a grand total of 1 WC final, 3 WC semis, 1 euro final and 3 euro semis. For comparison, Germany has made 8 WC finals, 13 WC semis, and 6 euro finals, 9 euro semis. When you see this, I think most people think that England fans should be extremely humble about big upping their players. Even now, with I think England fans actually being more humble, I root against England in soccer/football. And that is saying something. I am an American of German and Chinese heritage, yet in basically all aspects, I favor the UK over Germany. I feel more kinship with the UK, like their foreign policy more, and just like their country more. Soccer/football is the ONLY thing I root for Germany over England in. Now with that being said, even understanding the underlying reasons for England hate (part resenting England's powerful place in the world, part being perplexed at historically England fans being arrogant despite being HUGE underachievers, and part not wanting to never hear the end of it if England wins), the anti England hysteria has I think gone too far. Most England fans are well aware of their past poor performances, and if anything expect something to go wrong, and like to take the piss at themselves and their team. And maybe in the 2010s England genuinely had a poor team for big European nation, but since 2020 (2018 was a lucky draw), England have genuinely been a top 4-5 team in the world. So people saying England always suck are wrong. All I want is people to be honest about some of their motivations behind lashing out at the US and England/UK, but also for England fans to not make us hear it for the next 70 years if they ever do win a tournament
@@AW-zk5qb I think it is easy to focus on those who demonstrate arrogance, and it is then all too easy to project that on the rest of us, like me, an England fan. I can feel comfortable singing “ Football’s coming home” because I know the lyrics- one line says we fans know “we’re going to throw it away”-it is an English joke told to ourselves that we’ll probably lose, but let’s have fun dreaming. I can understand why others think this is arrogant, when its intent is exactly the opposite. I accept however there are those who sing it arrogantly. England’s empirical past was nothing at all to be proud of, and on that score we should be ashamed, but that’s another story.
@@Nick.Martin. true. I might also say that the "it's coming home" might get other nations' fans angry for a different reason: the idea that England winning the trophy means that football is "coming home." As in the England is the home of football. Now in a technical sense it is, because it created the rules for football. But I think that some people take it as: the English think they are the owners of the sport itself, when you have at least 5-6 nations that are historically better at the sport than England. This is speculation on my part. I'm not really bothered by it, but I'm trying to infer that. But again, and I am speculating and bringing in other things, this might have to do with the nation above others or nation among nations. Honestly, besides the USA and UK, even though almost all nations have patriotism, almost all of them view themselves as nations among nations. USA and UK I believe often view themselves as above. And honestly, through accomplishments, power, and some genuinely good things (for the time), there is an argument. I think the "football's coming home" chant grinds their gears, because say an Italian, German, Spaniard etc is thinking "England fans should just consider themselves one nation among other nations, not the custodians and spiritual owners of the sport." This could be a reach, but just thought I'd throw that out there. And totally get the point about projecting. I think everyone needs to understand that in ANY nation, there are people who are arrogant and people who are not. Maybe when we make general statements, we mean what a larger portion of a population of a nation believes than another nation. As in if say 30-35% of Americans or Brits believe that their nation is above others, basically no other nation has even that amount of people who believe their nation is unique and above others. I don't want my next statement to come off as arrogant, because I know nations are made up of people, good and bad, and no one has a birthright to being the best, but as an American, I honestly expect my nation to be the best in any sport that it cares about as much as other nations. Meaning the idea that the US could care about a sport as much as another nation and not be the best is hard to wrap my mind around. I always wonder about an alternate reality in which soccer/football had been the top sport in the US from the 1800s
@@AW-zk5qb That song was written in 1996, the year England hosted the Euros. That’s what was meant by football coming home. It wasn’t about winning it but hosting it. This is what has been lost since. Our misfortune here is that it was a song with a catchy hook, simple and fun to sing in a crowd. If it had been crap, none of this nonsense and misunderstanding would have occurred. Oh how I wish! Nowadays mind you, we prefer to sing Sweet Caroline, which is also fun to sing as a crowd. That song has nothing to do with football at all, and makes no claims we’re going to win or if we’re a good team . It is about entertainment, enjoying and adding to the atmosphere and that’s all. I believe “Football’s Coming Home” was just about entertainment in a similar vein as Sweet Caroline. If the lyric was “Football’s Fun To Play” I think we might still have sung it because of the tune! I agree, if you’re saying in the end we’re all individuals, and that every country has good and bad. As to thinking we are or were top dog, I believe that nearly all Brits would agree we’re just not that any more and probably (almost certainly) never will be that again. Most of us know we’re in decline. Just to add, if you look at the winners, it is usually a country’s population that is an indicator of who wins. I believe, of the historical footballing loving nations, Brazil is the largest, then Germany, France, Italy etc. if we played as the UK, who knows how different football history might have been simply because of population size. I’ve no doubt if the US was a football nation, it would have dominated. Thanks for reading.

I feel bad for my English mates when we go to another country. We get very different reactions when I tell people I'm Irish and when they tell people they're English.
I love "it's coming home". It's one of my favorite football songs and really famous among people. it accompanied me since 1996, the first international football touirnament that I was old enough to truely follow, which is one of the best football-memories until today! Greeting from Germany. ... "three lines on the shirt[..]".
As an Australian, i like a lot of your players and if the countries from my background are out of a tournament i would back you guys in to win and support you. I also like the fans because from what i see now, they show what football is all about.
American of English descent here learning to embrace your football and EURO 2024. I recently watched the Netflix documentary on the 2022 final and was shocked to learn that some security and others inside the stadium were hoping for a loss due to the violence and destruction that would encude . How sad. Either way I will still root for England. Good Luck 🏴
As a Scot, it’s in my blood to hate England. I’m half Geordie so I hope the Toon players like Gordon score 4 for England, but I’d hope England lose 4-5.
@@georgecarr9844I don’t rlly wanna associate with them tbh 😂 I’ve lived in Scotland my whole life, so I’m gonna support Scotland. The closest connection I have to England is my family connection in the NE, but that doesn’t make me feel English it makes me feel geordie.
A lot of our fans are just negative, negative and negative. Everything is just "Southgate is crap" "We're never winning anything." These people can't call themselves supporters. Ultimately, this just puts more unnecessary pressure on players and coaches. (LOVE THE BARNES ❤ SHIRT IN THE BACKROUND BTW ❤)
I went to watch England v North Macedonia Euros qualifier at Old Trafford and sat in the row in front of me was an entire family of Indian heritage, from grandparents in traditional clothing, westernised parents all the way to young excited kids in England shirts. They were all loving it. It made me think maybe the perception of watching England is changing and people from different backgrounds now feel it's a place they can come to.
The 'it's coming home' turned into a saying after the song came out, to symbolize hope, not literally expecting that we win the tournements. Most tournaments since the 1996 song, we expected not to do so well, but cheered them on anyway with "its coming home" lol
As a British Greek Cypriot living in England, the only time I would ever want England to win anything is if Harry Kane retires trophyless. It would just be hilarious for England to finally win something after Kane retires with only silver medals to his name.
I’m English. You list all the reasons why England are hated and the behaviour of the fans in those times was disgusting, but the spotlight is always on us, so you are bound to hear about it more. If you take football hooliganism, it goes on in France, Italy, Russia, Poland, Spain and other countries around the world (e.g. Mexico and Argentina fans were fighting each other in a recent WC, it got almost no coverage). When it happens with other countries (except maybe Russia… geopolitically that’s quite interesting) it’s comparatively swept under the rug. The last euros the outpouring of hate against England, not just to the fans but to the team too, was also disgusting and it rarely gets called out. This all reminds me of the ‘it’s ok to punch up’ dynamic, but England are in no way a superior position. As a fan looking out it feels like punching down.
Ah yes, the "what about the others" and "the others bully us" argument. Sounds like the whiny Brexit voters then complaining about punishment from the EU, you must be Liz Truss in disguise.
Werde mal erwachsen!
My biggest gripe with English fans is that they seem to be the only ones who consistently boo the national anthem of the other team. I cannot recall fans of other teams who do that.
I'm an American fan, but it feels like most English fans will just disregard my fandom due to my country's sports culture, and the terminology we use (we call the sport "soccer" among other things). I get it, it can sound funny calling it a "roster" instead of a "squad," but it really does bug the hell out of me and other American fans that we can't talk about ⚽ without being ridiculed for our nationality. That being said, I do think there's a lot of good English fans that are being wrongfully painted as awful due to a small vocal minority. It really sucks. I wish you guys the best of luck for the Euros though. 🤝
Same here, for me it’s also especially how our players are treated like they are terrible and anything else is a lie while ridiculing you for as if it’s obviously a fact
If we're taking the piss out of your country it means we like you. You guys do it with Canada, that friendly but slightly mean banter. In Europe we take it to another level though. I have no problem with you calling a squad a roster. Nor a shirt a jersey, we also used to call it a jersey back when they actually wore jerseys. But yeah soccer is a faux pas.
@@spime93 This is going to be long so strap in. There are many different types of football. There's Rugby football. There's Gaelic football. There's Aussie rules football. But there's only one original. One that professionalised first, formed leagues and associations etc. We don't change the names of other types of football. To do so would be to delegitimize them. It would be arrogant. They're all equally types of football and they can all share the name. Every country has it's historic internal divisions. In America the big one is race. In Britain it's class. Class is how you discriminate against people who look the same as you. Football is the working class game in Britain. The only people who will call it soccer in Britain are the upper classes. So by calling it soccer you're unwittingly taking a side in a historic divide. The reasons for this go back to the amateur professional split. I can go into more detail if you'd like but this is long enough already. Thirdly, and this may just be me, but I'm offended on American's behalf. Back when football was being introduced to America your higher ups decided that regular American's couldn't get their heads around more than one type of football. Like the rest of the world can. As if Americans were too stupid to understand the concept. I'm not on board with that type of condescension.
I've not made jokes about the US team since 2002. That was an awesome team. You guys still have quality players and strategy. But yeah, "soccer". Just no 🤣
I personally feel that people are never going to stop hating England, that's just the way it is. I love the players, they're absolutely fantastic and I've built a connection with them over the years as I watch the Premier League every weekend. I support England for every international tournament and it pains when we lose and when people hate on us but I don't mind, as I simply won't have a connect with any other NT (and btw I'm neither English nor do I live in England). And also....It's coming home!
I totally get why people resent England/England fans due to the violence/history etc... but objecting to "It's Coming Home" as a chant is the softest thing I can possibly imagine. Football was invented in England, and it's something to take pride in. Should England Fans "We may or may not win, who knows?". Just a dumb thing to complain about.
You need to understand that: -football is now a global game, regardless of who invented it. Being the inventor doesn't give England any special privilege, just like inventing the railways then letting others getting better at it did England no good -for much of that global fanbase, the "English humour" behind "It's Coming Home" is totally lost on them Now good luck telling the world that it's a great song but they just can't understand its meaning because they are too dumb.
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgiaI’m not even English. It’s like getting insulted at Sunderland fans for singing about Sunderland being “by far the greatest football team the world has ever seen”. It’s fans supporting their team. If you find that insulting, touch grass.
One more thing, just because football has gone global doesn’t change where it comes from. That’s a matter of historical fact, if you’re insulted by that get a grip. If you don’t think England is in a real sense Football’s home, you just don’t understand the English language.
Frenchman here, I don't like the English NT because of the English media and the fans. I remember a few days prior to the England-France match in the Quarter Finals of the 2022 World Cup, I read a few English newspapers and watched a few English channels, all of them were arrogant and talking sh*t about our team, saying that they will fry us, things like this. You never see this in ANY other country (or very rarely). English media lacks HUMBLENESS and is way too overconfident and always trash talks just to end up losing.
Like what the fuck are you talking about hahaha you people just make shit up it’s hilarious and even if that was true I don’t know what youde br expecting after choosing to learn out language then reading our media
I’ve got Irish blood but I’m English born and raised so obviously I’m biased, but as obnoxious as some England fans can be, I do find it funny how many are pretty much bashed by foreign fans for passion and optimism, something that could easily be said about every other nation that actually shows an interest in football. Just a tad bit of hypocrisy here and there…
I don’t think anyone has ever bashed England for passion and optimism - what kind of football fan would you be without either? If you’re confusing these for toxic arrogance and unbearable presumptuousness, then there is your answer.
@@theastonvillaseal585 I think the many (like yourself) are genuinely sound as fans. It’s the 10% that are absolute scum that ruin it for the rest of you. You can hardly smash up your own host final city in the euros and racially abuse the team over a rubber ball and say that’s not toxic? I can’t even begin to get started with what the abuse Celtic nations face from England fans.
@@WolfenhawkWe get bashed for singing it’s coming home. If a playful song is toxic arrogance then the rest of Europe needs to learn to crack a smile every now and again

We hope to move to Argentina and that our young daughters will grow up there. I hope have so much love for your country! Malvinas son Argentinas 🇦🇷 ❤
To be fair, despite what happened in Birmingham (and that was a huge topic there after Alkmaar...), right now England is probably the most popular 2nd choice in Poland.
27 y/o English here - and man I hate us sometimes. The team and It's Coming Home I can tolerate. Our fans behaviour, I most certainly cannot, trashing streets, stadiums, local businesses, whatever it is, we have absolute whoppers representing us on the international stage, and it's embarrassing, the words of our manager in that 1980 match hit home with me, I agree wholeheartedly with what he said. Bin off these absolute tossers we have as our fans, who often actively seek out trouble or start it in the first place, and replace them with Civil human beings who aren't on day release from a zoo, and we might actually show we have respectable fans that can go to these games too. But while we have people behaving in their current manner (for the most part) we're never going to be liked, and that's the unfortunate reality.
@callu947 that was unique because you don't normally have 20,000 empty seats at cup finals (covid restriction). I think if it was a full stadium, there would have been less carnage for sure. The scum rioting that day were almost certain they'd get a free seat. Not justifying it of course.
Wharton is the truth. People have gotten to know his quality over the last few days with another masterclass. It will still shock people when he gets on that plane I’m sure.
The trouble is they all speak English and watch our media. Nobody complains about the attitude of portuguese fans and media because nobody know what theyre saying.
nahhh mate i love it. football heritage at its finest, im from italy but i did my uni in london during euro 2020 and the vibes are immaculate, fans are great and chants are fun. love the national team and the players too, not really a fan of southgate though
Ciao Paul, tutto bene? I remember that tournament well mainly because I ended up watching the final with my dad who's Welsh and my girlfriend who's from Bari, Puglia. She claimed she hated football and didn't care who won but when Italy equalised I could barely look at her as she jumped up and down!!! At the end of the game as we were walking home she said 'You still love me , right?' Haha. Glad you enjoyed your time in England:-)

I absolutely hate the way the fans go about it and I'd feel ashamed to support the same team as them, so I will always support Italy first
In 2018 when ‘it’s coming home’ went international online for the first time, that really made the arrogant English fans reputation grow massively. But nobody knew about the actual song, when and why it was originally made and most importantly self deprecating nature of it!
@@felixmustermann790 it does matter if we are saying English fans singing/saying it is arrogant, because they don’t know the story of it and the timing of it when the full song was made in 1996 by two comedians
People just love to hate, many people hate England for obvious reasons and others just jump on the bandwagon bexause they wanna feel involved and want to have an opinion.
Three Lions is about hope and optimism, the belief that we can maybe do better this time and avoid all of the heartache of the past that is referenced in the lyrics. It isn't arrogant, it's hopeful. The sentiment of the song is not that we WILL win, but that PERHAPS this time we could! Also, it's a massive anthem that is great to sing along to!
People sing it arrogantly. The chant that came from that song is "it's coming home" that is part that fans sing most and most intensely. It's that phrase on t-shirts banners, even underwear. That is why the song is popular. It doesn't matter what the whole song means, it's how it's used.
@@chuckles471For someone called chuckles you dont have much of a sense of humour , do you ? I live in London and have friends from around the world, I can tell you irony isn't solely the preserve of the British . If you are from another country and think Three Lions is evidence of English entitlement you are being deliberately obtuse in order to justify your irrational hatred of another people .
@@chuckles471 And even if we do sing it arrogantly, why does it matter? It's funny how everyone is so laser-focused on everything we do. Personally I couldn't name a single song that is sung by other national teams' fanbases.
Exactly, the song is about HOPING we win even though history has taught us we probably won't. Are other nations seriously telling us we shouldn't even hope we win? Do they not hope their countries win? Its just hate for no reason
I remember when I first heard Three Lions. On Baddiel and Skinner’s Fantasy Football show on BBC2. It premiered two months before Euro 96, with little fanfare. But what struck me, was its modesty, and how it railed against the very arrogance, it now symbolises among England fans since. Who’ve completely missed the entire point of the song. IEngland had recently failed to even qualify for USA 94. A year earlier, the far right had got an England friendly in Dublin abandoned. To follow England in the mid 90s, for reasons on and off the pitch, was embarrassing. England weren’t expected to do much in that tournament. And the song acknowledged this harsh reality. Dare to dream, but keep your feet on the ground.
I remember when the women football team of England won the finals of the Euro cup against Germany. The English fans had nothing better to do to make fun of a crying German girl in the audience. Apparently there were several tik toks or other videos mocking the sad German fans, that crying girl in particular. So they not only are bad losers but they are in particular horrible winners as well
As a Dane, I've always been kinda a neutral towards the England fans, sure they have done some disasterclasses, but I've never had an opinion on it, until Denmark met England in the euros 2020. I was watching the game from Denmark on a big tv screen with thousands around me and some of my friends. And since Eriksen had already fainted in the tourney, we kinda played in pride of him, so when thousands of fans sang the national anthem of the first semi final Denmark had been in since 1992 and the entire Wembley stadium booed us, it was just so disrespectful and I who was a neutral towards the England fans before had lost all of my respect to them. We had played such a great tournament, and it felt like the whole nation was joined together for the fist time in many years. There was also the big fight that took place after the match was over between the England fans and the travelling Danish fans. There were kids and men and women that were getting harrassed, violently beat up and so on. And then nothing happened after all of that. I only saw two videos before being to disgusted to keep watching them, but from what I saw and the reports after it was not just a fight, it was a fight that never was necessary, and England had even won the game which imo was very unfair and not the right choises taken by the ref. I don't think I can ever forgive those England fans..
I'd just like to share with you as an Englishman. Many of us are disgusted when we hear our own fans booing other nations anthems. Me and my Dad were sat watching a game recently and we were, again, as usual, in complete disbelief of it. We're not a wealthy family, not highly educated or anything. We're very working class, but still can't understand the idiocy of it. Growing up I used to feel our nation prides itself on traditional gentlemanly values somewhat. Adulthood taught me that unfortunately we are a nation full of many utter idiots who respect nothing. My exceptions may be Germany, France and Scotland for obvious reason. I may understand it then, but wouldn't join in myself.

Respect from a Serb living currently in Germany 😃👍 I'm very worried about the match between England and Serbia in a few weeks, because Im sure you remember when Russian hooligans were fighting English fans in Marseille during the European Cup in France. Well Serbian hooligans were also there with the Russians fighting against English fans. I'm afraid that this time the Russians will accompany Serbian hooligans to fight the English again. Let's hope that it won't happen.
As a German, I think that the thing with the 9 year old girl was completely unnecessary and idiotic behaviour. Also, didn’t particularly like the use of laser pointers during a penalty against Denmark that much.

1. England fans are no worse than most of Europe. Considerably better than some parts of Europe. We don't have ultras. At least we have the decency to be disgusted by our hooligans. In some countries the hooligans run the top clubs, sometimes even the FA. 2. Liverpool fans aren't really English anyway, so Heysel isn't on us. 3. The English are probably more irritated by Football's Coming Home than everyone else, but foreigners shouldn't be concerning themselves with what the English are singing. We can see from Eurovision that Europeans know nothing about music. 4. English people don't like or respect our own press anyway, so we're not responsible for the things they write. Do foreign press not show support for their teams? 5. Exactly what happened at the Euro 2020 final happened at the Champions League final yesterday. Can't blame English people for yesterday. 6. Other countries had colonies. I appreciate you are of an age where they teach you in school that the English are responsible for all the world's problems but Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain and France had colonies, and the Africans did slavery to themselves. Also Scotland went bankrupt and needed to be bailed out by the English because they tried to colonise Panama. Ethiopia had an empire.
hospitality staff in every single country in europe with no exceptions will tell you that english people are the worst. i agree that you dont have anything close to ultras, but i think it's worth focusing on the average fan(/person?) of each nation rather than fringe groups, for which there seems to be an alarmingly universal consensus that you're the worst also dont flatter yourselves its mainly taught as europe vs rest of the world not england vs rest of the world
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with the hooliganism, but I think that none of us actually believe it’s coming home, it’s just a way to hype ourselves up and it’s a fun song at the end of the day
This is not even a football issue. Im dutch and worked at hotels my whole life. I encountered every single etnicity. But the most troubling towards other guests and staff and the rooms where always english people. We had a special routing that when a english person left a room we check the room fordamage and 99% of the time the room was damaged broken. Or the people inside where drunk and drinking against the rules sleeping in hallways etc etc. At this moment we put other nationalities in front of english people..
As an irishman - i have no love for the English fans whatsoever, and do enjoy seeing them lose. You seem like a nice guy and i hope that you are able to experience so sucess as guys like you deserve it
As a Finn, I have always liked England as a team. Maybe since I grew on Beckhams, Scholes', Giggs' and tons of other cool ballers. Nice defenders like Ashley Cole.. I still feel England has certain level of coolness to them.
I feel like euro 2016 shows best whats the problem is with England. They get drawn into a group with Russia Slovakia and Wales, they drew with Russia, beat Wales, and got another draw against Slovakia, placing them 2nd with 5 points with Wales topping the group. This is where the trashtalking started as England claimed that "they were the best and could beat everyone." In the R16 they were drawn with Iceland, and the media was clowning on them a LOT, but then the match happend... and they lost to Iceland 2-1 dispite having 68% possesion and 500+ passes
Not one person thought we had a good enough squad to win in 2016, not to mention hodgson being in charge as well. There is a difference between the perception of the English media and the actual fan base.
English is a more international language, if the English on the whole could understand and were exposed to the French / German and Spanish media around tournaments they would probably find it equally insufferable. Scotland and the rest of the UK have to watch English pundits on TV banging on about England 24/7 so its understandable why they want them to lose, sometimes I turn on the radio and its almost as if the pundits are just saying Foden/Bellingham/Foden/Bellingham over and over again like they are in some sort of nonsensical trance
Dutchie here. I like England and I think England did an amazing job of keeping hooliganism out of the stadiums for many years now. Of course I’m talking about club football in England itself. Outside of England the English fans don’t have a good reputation, but at least in England itself you can go to a stadium for a derby between two rivalling teams and the worst thing that can happen is that the fans of the rivalling team sing louder. I get jealous of the wonderful atmosphere. I watched the FA cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United and the atmosphere was AMAZING! Now in the Netherlands, my team (NEC Nijmegen) played the final in the Dutch equivalent of the FA cup against Feyenoord. Needless to say I was buzzing and it was great, but the referee had to stop the game two times because half of the stadium caught fire, so it felt. Hooliganism in the Netherlands is a growing problem. And it seems like a growing problem in many European countries. I won’t even mention the frequent fights and deaths caused by football fans in some South American countries. So please realise that we see those things as well. England has set an example of how to ban hooliganism in and around their stadiums and the world is watching and I know for a fact that at least in The Netherlands we can only hope that one day we get to that point where we can say “we did it, we banned hooliganism out of our stadiums as well”. And I’m sure other countries will try and copy ‘the English approach’ for a safer and friendlier visit to a game of football as much as we’d like to. And let me just emphasise the fact that I personally love the English. I love all of the UK. One thing I’ll never forget is the extreme difference I experienced when I went to Paris for four days, where I didn’t receive a single kind word, or a friendly face, while a year later in London I received nothing else BUT only friendly responses from all those Londoners. Talking about a culture shock. 😅 For French people who read this, know that I’m aware that the French can be just as friendly and polite as anyone and just by occasionally watching some reality shows from England (my mom watches this, don’t blame me!) I’m fully aware of the fact that there are assholes in England too, just like there are nice people and terrible people to be found in every country all over the world. 😊 🧡🧡🧡
I'm from Eastern Europe, I've never even been to England. But it just so happened that I've been cheering for them for the past twenty years and boy, I've had my share of heartbreaks. I do get where hatred is coming from - fans always ruin everything, it happens with movies and TV series, it's the same with football. In my country there's a lot of dislike towards the English. But my heart is forever settled. It's England till I die. I just want to see them win a tournament so bad.
As someone from Belgium I always support England as my second nation. I love how passionate the fans are and how the tournament brings everyone together.
No surprise, Belgium is not even a real country and spent a whole decade not qualifying for tournaments. You'd have to take your chances elsewhere given those circumstances.
@@Wolfenhawk Belgium is not a real country, it's a confederation of two entities (Wallonia and Flanders, with Brussels in between) masquerading as a country while those two entities function almost independently of each other. I would have said imagine Ireland and NI playing under a same banner, but Belgium is worse as the two don't even share a common language. Can't be easy to relate to the idea of a "national team" when the nation itself doesn't exist, so the people would be seeking other teams to support, and it wouldn't be one of their neighbours like the Netherlands or France. Other than that I'd say that there are lots of Belgian players in the Premier League, that Belgium unlike most European nations has no history of antagonism with the British and that the people probably relate to a team with a massive history of underperformance in football competitions.
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia But in the UN and every international orginisation, it is called Belgium yes? I mean what the hell is this comment, of course Belgium is a fucking country. You dont call the USA not a country because its states govern differently lmao
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia Fair enough. The Belgians have been a footballing powerhouse the last two decades though, I’d have a lot of support for them if I were a Belgian national
As a Romanian I actually like the England NT, have supported them for the past 3 tournaments (because we haven’t qualified for any of them so I had to find someone else, used to support Italy at previous tournaments but then they haven’t qualified either lol). Sure their fans cause quite some trouble (way better than it used to be but still not ideal, sometimes they are also discriminated against though like at the 2022 CL final) but I do feel like it is the more relatable country out of the major nations with this constant hope of winning something that never gets realised and I can definitely take the “It s coming home” chant as a joke with a grain of hope, I ve been trained by so many years of laughing at Becali (FCSB, formerly Steaua s owner which is the team I support) doing outlandish predictions that fail to become reality so I can take some Englishmen getting hyped for tournaments lol, I rate the self-depreciating “but what if…unless..🥺” hope of it all. I mean, I can be like “Florinel is the superior Coman over Kingsley, he s the only one that scored directly from a corner” too, doesn’t mean I believe it, hell, Coman will probably not even play that much at the Euros despite the massive season he s had for us (but the fact is true, he did score from a corner kick some years ago in a derby against Dinamo). The fact that you all haven’t won anything in this long is honestly mad given how you were always around there as one of the top nations, feel like in some ways it must be worse to support England than a lower national team like us because in our case you don’t have the expectation or even the hope of winning but with England you always look at the squad and feel like “come on, this team definitely has a chance of winning, don’t they?”. I also think that the current squad is fairly likeable, as for Southgate, for the longest amount of time I thought you all have been really harsh on him given his massive results (first Euro final. Ever. Lost on penalties at that. Yeah the penalty against Denmark was probably a dive but still. Semis at the WC 2018, easy bracket be damned. Quarter loss to France due to a missed pen in 2022. Before him y all were losing to Iceland ffs) and probably still are but the fact that he s been ignoring Tomori is a bit insane ngl and I presume you have a point when it comes to weak football being shown (think that at tournaments you ve been fine though). Then again, Greece and Portugal played like shit too and they won this tournament in the past 20 years. Hell, we, Romania have been playing like absolute shit and we won our group undefeated. Ahead of Switzerland. We got 4p in the matches against them. You know, the team with the almost invincible throughout the whole club season Granit Xhaka in midfield? When you hear that you think we ve been insanely good. We weren’t. We literally drew a match to Belarus and almost the second too. The first Swiss match we ve scored twice in 3 minutes at the end for the draw and Puscas didn’t even mean to pass the ball on one of them. But results are what is remembered. @edi0157 I wrote it without translating, but I'm not that good at Romanian, hence why I'm replying in English now. I am still learning. Romania played extremely well, and it's a shame they didn't get into the finals as they definitely deserved it. But there is always the next Euros, so hopefully they get further that time 💪
Hi there. I'm Portuguese and I don't hate you, pretty sure the vast majority of foreigners feel the same way. However, I think, for the most part, your analysis was pretty spot on. The one bit I'd mostly disagree with is the colonisation part. Particularly in Europe, I don't think anyone really resents you for that, also because there's several other European countries (mine included) with a colonial past. Outside of Europe I can see it, but it's not just exclusive to England or GB - there's definitely still lots of resentment from formerly colonised countries towards former colonisers and I honestly can't blame them. One aspect you didn't talk about, and that I occasionally see thrown around by England fans, who think everyone else hates their country, is Brexit. That one, I'm afraid, is the least plausible of all. There's 2 groups here: those who know what Brexit is, and those who don't. Neither of those care. In fact a bunch of people from the 1st group, myself included, would like the UK back in the EU. On the other hand, the other bits are spot on in my opinion. Even though it's a generalisation, and there's idiotic fans everywhere (we certainly have plenty in Portugal), I think some foreigners dislike your fans rather than your country and national team. As I said before, it's a generalisation, and like with other countries, it's a small minority that gives the rest a bad rep. Hooliganism, in the past, and less organised forms of that sort of behaviour nowadays (like in the day of the last Euros' final) certainly play a part in some foreign fans disliking or hating you. Again I'm pretty sure they don't really hate the country or the national team, they mostly just associate all of them and end up rooting against England because they don't like their fans (in reality it's a minority of those fans). Since, as I said before, every country and club has idiotic fans, the one thing that for me sets England apart is that your minority of obnoxious fans is particularly vocal. This leads me to my next point, which you also covered: the arrogance. This is just my perception, but a good number of foreigners seem to get annoyed at you guys in particular, because on top of the arrogance some fans (and definitely the media) show, England doesn't really have anything to back it up in the past decades - talking about trophies of course. I bet if you ask most foreign fans, they'll tell you the French (again generalising) are also arrogant. The difference with England being... they actually have something to show for it. So in my eyes, foreign fans are annoyed at the arrogance shown by some French fans, but they kind of understand it in the sense that, hell, you gotta recognise they've earned it in a way. However, in the arrogance part, as far as England is concerned, I'm pretty sure most foreigners target the media as much as the fans. And this is one of the aspects that's been holding England back in my opinion, which is not exclusive to you guys, since for instance in Mexico the same thing has been happening for a long time. What I mean is that your media, like the Mexcian one, puts too much pressure on your national team, and most of the time (nowadays the following is different because your team is really good) the squad quality doesn't match the level of expectations. This narrative then reaches the fans, making the least informed ones delusional. Even though professional footballers should remain immune to all of this, sometimes it can affect them. Right now the hype does make sense, because for me England has the 2nd best team in the world, only edged by France because their goalie and defence are better. But from the midfield onwards, there's no doubt in my mind England is second to none. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of perception. Plenty of English people I see posting content online are fairly knowledgeable and are aware that, even though right now their national team is really talented (and will be at least for the next decade), winning a major competition is hard, for a number of reasons: 1) There's always at least 5 or 6 other contenders in the Euros, and 7 or 8 in the World Cup. 2) These are short tournaments, where stuff like form or injuires are particularly important - 1 or 2 major casualties can make all the difference. 3) Luck (both of the draw and during matches) is a major factor. Portugal for instance played like dogshit during Euro 2016, but luck in the crucial moments, a favourable draw and a solid defensive display from the round of 16 onwards clinched it for us. And our squad was basically a peak Ronaldo surrounded by mediocrity. Which is why, deep down, I believe most of those reasonable English fans can see England winning the Euros / World Cup fairly soon. It certainly wouldn't surprise me. It's okay to be fairly arrogant, even wihtout silverware. If you have a very good national team, which you guys obviously do, it's only natural. Attitude wise, I think your (Vizeh's) approach is the right one: not be arrogant about your national team, but be aware of its quality. Regarding the vocal minority of idiotic fans, there's really nothing you can do. It comes with the sport and every other club / country has them. As for those who hate on you just for the sake of it, embrace it. Because one of the most satisfying things of winning is other people's butthurt. And even though right now England's defence is questionable and Southgate is tactically inept, I'd be very surprised if you guys don't win at least 1 major competition in the next decade.
I love english people, I live in england and the british are some of the nicest, funniest and most chill people ever. I have nothing but great things to say. Love their sense of humour. I always love when Portugal plays england in euros and world cups, always a great and emotional match.
Could you imagine if the U.S. had beaten England in the last World Cup. The melt down would of been great and the U.S. would hold that over them till they played again
For me, as an Argentinian, it's mostly fans and media. But also a little bit of rivalry. I don't really hate you. The players are fine. I even really like some of them and want to see them do well (Kane, Foden, Grealish, Pickford, etc). But the overhyping media and obnoxious fans really doesn't make the team's image any favours. Also, some people around here hate on England because of the islands issue... yeah, there will always be that. I, particularly, wouldn't hate on you for that. I only despise Thatcher and your government, as I think most of you already does. But we respect your team when it comes to talk about you as rivals Great video, btw. You gained a sub from me❤
It's also cause a lot of people speak English as a second language. They understand all our media hyping up our players. Don't get that for other European countries.
At least here in Germany there is no hyping up of the team or players. It is a discussion that always is kind of rational and driven by the will to come to an conclusion as near to reality as it gets

There are two types of team people like in Sports. Winners and underdogs, the fact that England managed to be neither of these two is one of the reasons why no neutral friends like them.
That’s a great way to describe it cheers

@@garruksson Portugal have won something in my lifetime, so I would consider them Winners. Netherlands are underdogs, because they hope to win but never do. England never win but their media is so sure they will, that I can't call them underdogs.
Personally that s why I like the England NT (as a Romanian). Feels like the most relatable of the major nations with that hope of “maybe we win this time, look, we aren’t losing to teams like Iceland anymore…nah, not this time. But look, next time the final is being played at Wembley, surely now…oh, it was so close, just a penalty loss in the final, fuckk”. The English media is the issue, not the national team. Anytime a foreign team does well against England there is never praise given to the opposing side, only excuses for the poor performance of the England squad. Almost like it is impossible to accept that any foreign side is better. No, it must have just been a poor performance for the squad.

During the last world cup before the France - England match, the English media kept saying Hugo Lloris was the weak point of the team, and in France, a lot of media were talking about it.
It has been about as well received as you would expect, both by France and England fans."

I've been to the Algarve and stayed in a Robinsons all inclusive hotel/site. It was beautiful and I'd definitely go again.

Os gajos tmb nos roubaram nas meias do mundial de 66.
Yep going abroad, getting drunk & generally behaving like twats definitely doesn't help the image. And the rest of us get tarred with the same brush

Regarding their national team you can`t hate them but only feel sorry for them.
I totally get why people resent England/England fans due to the violence/history etc... but objecting to "It's Coming Home" as a chant is the softest thing I can possibly imagine. For me, "It's Coming Home" is a bit like a joke that I've heard one too many times. I don't particularly hate it but I could do without it.
You need to understand that:
-football is now a global game, regardless of who invented it. Being the inventor doesn't give England any special privilege, just like inventing the railways then letting others getting better at it did England no good
-for much of that global fanbase, the "English humour" behind "It's Coming Home" is totally lost on them
Now good luck telling the world that it's a great song but they just can't understand its meaning because they are too dumb.

But nobody knew about the actual song, when and why it was originally made and most importantly self deprecating nature of it!
its coming home is known by football fans since it came out, doesnt matter which country, it didnt become mainstream in 2018
@@felixmustermann790 it does matter if we are saying English fans singing/saying it is arrogant, because they don’t know the story of it and the timing of it when the full song was made in 1996 by two comedians
@chuckles471 it's the part fans sing most and most intensely (and the part that appears on all the merch) because it's the bloody chorus 😂
@@chuckles471For someone called chuckles you dont have much of a sense of humour , do you ? @@chuckles471 And even if we do sing it arrogantly, why does it matter? It's funny how everyone is so laser-focused on everything we do. Personally I couldn't name a single song that is sung by other national teams' fanbases.
Exactly, the song is about HOPING we win even though history has taught us we probably won't. Are other nations seriously telling us we shouldn't even hope we win? Do they not hope their countries win? Its just hate for no reason
Ngl some people's hatred for Englands national team is just weird.
So they not only are bad losers but they are in particular horrible winners as well
You know what, you're right. Toxic people on social media exist only in England!

Why do you automatically blame the English for those fights?

I’m In the state of Oregon, can’t make it out to see those games but I wish you safe travels and the best of luck on your games!!!
For French people who read this, know that I’m aware that the French can be just as friendly and polite as anyone and just by occasionally watching some reality shows from England (my mom watches this, don’t blame me!) I’m fully aware of the fact that there are assholes in England too, just like there are nice people and terrible people to be found in every country all over the world. 😊

I hear this a lot from Belgians. I wonder why so many of you support England in tournaments?

Which is why I am strangely hopeful for us this year but I digress. In the end, let s all get behind our teams, hope for fair refereeing and enjoy a great tournament. I won’t be supporting you lads this time primarily because we re in it of course but I have still predicted you to win, I think and hope you will get over the hump eventually as you deserve to celebrate a trophy too
