I thought so too. Pretty sure it's not a matter of keeping up, but peer pressure. Maher went a little hard for a minute or two so he set the tone...kinda hard to be the first to applaude "the other guy" on a talk show like that. Got to give them both credit though. Shapiro kept his cool when Maher was getting hot, and I think Maher read that. It ended up being a really good interview. There's always *some* kind of common ground to be found, right?
I can respect Maher for having Shapiro on, most people are afraid of him. A lot of people hate Shapiro simply because he's a conservative, but I haven't found a more fair conservative to date.
That statement is a sad indictment of conservatism as a whole.
A lot hate Shapiro on first sight. I know it is unfair and not true, but his facial expression when he talks and even the tone of his voice and his fast talking style make him look like an asshole. I know he is not, even though I disagree with him on some things.
Tracy Ripple except it was Maher that was asking the questions. If Ben had been firing off questions left and right at Mahar, I guarantee Maher would look like a fool. Maher was hitting balls into the outfield and Ben graciously caught all of them, and a couple got thrown to home plate.

I love Bill acting like he really put it to Ben during this segment. This was easy sailing for Ben. Bill has avoided having him on the show for obvious reasons (his supernatural debating skills), and it's nice to see these two sit down finally.

Ben was back for the panel with Malcolm Nance. And Bill went on Ben's podcast. So, yeah ... I don't think Maher really avoided him. Easy sailing? Well he looked like he was backed into a corner, when he said Trump wasn't the thought president. Or when he said the constitution is a durable document, when Bill asked him if he thinks Trump respects the rule of law. I'd say otherwise he handled himself pretty well, but he did admit to some things about Trump that he probably
wouldn't have otherwise.

Ben was extremely divided on Trump, so he was never backed into a corner about him. Maher needs to give it a rest on Trump. He blathers on and on about him, and it gets really tiresome. Ben's been over this on his show, they do Bill's show live Friday nights. Sabbath falls on Friday night and as a religious Jew, there are certain customs he must attend to by a certain time.
The sabbath falls late enough in the day for one day a year to make this interview possible.
I generally lean left, but I have to admit Shapiro is fairly consistent with his beliefs, regardless of what team they're from. I have to give him that.

Have to be honest.. As someone who is considered "liberal" I really can't argue with anything Ben Shapiro is saying here. We may not agree on everything, but I think he is definitely an intelligent person who is capable of being rational and objective. I don't know why Bill keeps attacking Trump as if he is expecting Ben to unconditionally defend him because Shapiro isn't doing that. He has always been capable of being critical of Trump when he thinks he is wrong.

Jesse Collins TBH I'm not really into this whole "side" or "team" mentality... I like to make decisions on case by case basis. My conservative friends call me a "liberal" but I have a bunch of guns. It seems a lot of people either think it should be every man for themselves or every one gets a free ride. I think you can help people in need without just becoming a socialist country. Things aren't as black and white as people make it out to be.
Maher is an expert of "I'm getting beat let's change the subject". He's also smart enough to know where his fan base is and to never stray to far from it. It's not often he'll even bring on someone of Shapiro's caliber. Maher is the boxer who only fights in his home town and only fights one arm opponents, when he does stumble on a decent opponent this is what happens. Wonder where the staffer that convinced him this was a good idea is working now.

Lol the last 5 minutes were the Russia story. And he’s most comfortable talking about it because it’s only speculation. We don’t actually know if Trump collided with Russia whereas when they discussed the other issues, Ben could actually cite examples and policy decisions that backed up his claims that Trump governs conservatively and is doing a pretty decent job has President. Maher failed to make the right seem more unhinged than the left.
It’s interesting watching this a few years later and seeing that Ben was right about everything and Bill is starting to come around.
Ben has the balls to do what most people don’t. Walk into a room full of people who strongly disagree with you, get on stage, and tell the truth even though you know full well the crowd will hate you for it. No matter what “side” you’re on, don’t be a coward and tell people what they want to hear. Stand your ground.

The problem of the interview is that they bounced all over the place from topic to topic, mostly just agreeing that Trump is a douchebag and making fun of him. I'd like to have seen them debate about the actual issues more instead of talking about Trump so much.

And if Shapiro was talking to someone who actually knows how to debate. I don't agree with Shapiro on almost anything but I have to give it to him here because of Bill's non-arguments.
Bill couldn't fake the funk that long
The cheers and boos make it awesome, listen to some of Shapiro's long form debates, where he slowly wins the crowd and gets them to cheer for conservative ideas.
Bill’s arguments were based on investigations being factual while in reality, no conclusion had been determined. These are the grounds for so many arguments that the Democratic Party lean on. Would love to have Bill and Ben rewatch this interview and then discuss the outcome along with provide insight given the current policy shifts.

Yeah, most of my family and friends are rather socially conservative (in Germany, though) and even somewhat anti-gay, yet I can talk to them about it without any conflict, and I'm even openly bisexual. I think usually when people hear that somebody is from another party or ideology, they immediately think they must be for EVERTHING that ideology generally stands for. Except people are individuals, and them not having the same positions as most people of that ideology isn't a "baffling anamoly" as some people see it, but it's just normal. I think most people will always be nice people, you just have to actually talk to them and talk about THEM and their actual positions and feelings, not their ideology
Expect one side wants to suppress everyone not like them and the other doesn't care if you are black, trans, poor, etc.

The problem is that Bill is approaching Ben is if he were a Trump supporter. But he has always been against Trump. The topic should have been focused on Conservative versus Liberal values. That would have been a more substantial debate.
