I was a tomboy when I was a kid. Hated "girly" things, and despised those girls who screamed and snivelled at everything, which seemed to my eyes to be almost every girl except me. I wanted to be a cowboy (not cow girl) or failing that, a pirate, and I loved climbing trees. I was always with the boys, and they were happy to have me, apparently, since they never drove me away like they did with other girls. I was the despair of my mother, who desperately wanted a pink, frilly, girly girl. I'm still pretty much the same, but happily married with two kids. I like dressing up in nice clothes and jewellery at the appropriate time, though I'm probably happiest in jeans and boots on the farm with my horses. These days I would definitely have been steered towards gender change treatments, and probably have been miserable for the rest of my life. What people are doing to children now is utterly immoral. Joseph Mengele would have been proud of today's experimental child abusers.
Janet, yours is an important voice that more people should listen to. I wasn’t a “tomboy” but I also wasn’t a girly-girl either. Thankfully, we both grew up in a time when you didn’t have to fit into a box that someone else designed.
The tomboy should make a come back. I grew up as a tomboy but understood, thanks to my parents, that I wasn't a boy nor did I need to be one. I could be a nerdy girl that grew up into hunting and sports while keeping my pulp fiction, science fiction and fantasy likes, and that was fine.
That just shows that you aren’t understanding the issue. Why would you think that people hadn’t already thought of this? You honestly believe trained therapists and psychiatrists never once thought that some characteristics are shared by gay and trans people? Your fear of trans is making you not think straight.
Not necessarily, he says the amount of lgbtq people coming out nowadays is more than double what it was a few generations ago. This is true but then he takes it to the conclusion that by 2050 everyone would be lgbtq, this is a logical falicy at best. Not everyone is gay or trans or what have you and being such isn't something that can be taught or forced into existence at any age, we know this because being straight isn't something that can be taught or forced into existence at any age, believe me we tried. Conversion therapy even back when it's practices were blatantly tantamount to torture it still didn't work. If it didn't work for gays it won't work for straights plain and simple. Now that we have that out of the way, with increasing acceptance of lgbtq people you will predictably see an uptick in population that identifies as such, but after a certain point that number will plateau, same way it happened for left handed people in the 1920s and 1930s, (when before even then being left handed was considered taboo). We saw the same growing of general acceptance, individuals who came out, and the same predictable plateau. not all people are left handed and not all people are lgbtq, that fact will not change. As for the puberty blocker stuff, we have over 30 years of research already put into the effects of it especially in children, considering one of its original purposes was to treat early onset breast cancer in children. The only real danger that is consistent across the board is very rare cases of temporarily reduced bone density. A lot of context is left out here and I don't blame Bill at all for it considering not everyone knows about this stuff yet but I'd imagine after a session of answering some of these questions we can clear up a lot of the misconceptions
He didn't understand the LGBT community AT ALL in this clip, it is really disingenuous and insulting. He's playing to the stupidity and ignores the history of same sex friendships and the criminality that once led to many to hide their passions away from societies laws and eyes. Of course the numbers of those willing to say they enjoy same sex friendships is rising due to the elimination of extreme laws that imprisoned and at time put people to death for these friendships. Maher should do some research into the history of same sex friendships and he may just find even Abraham Lincoln enjoyed same sex friendships. Perhaps even Maher himself at one time experimented but at his age he would have known if it was found out he'd either have been castrated or put in prison. WTFup folks. But even here he still uses their false narrative that they are somehow oppressed and "Marginalised" How? They are the most promoted and protected group in history and have special privileges through "diversity quotas" heterosexual people don't have. In fact "affirmative action" of any kind actually actively discriminates against people outside of the specified privileged groups. The most marginalised people across the West by far are white heterosexual working class men who are vilified 24/7, just supporting Trump is unprecedented extremism according to the US government! Before that they were deplorable and they are scapegoated for every single social issue in America, how is that not marginalised? Identity politics is the very definition of discriminating between groups based on religion, race, gender or sexual proclivity - something they pretend they are fighting. The more they divide, the more they have power and so they must perpetually invent new divisions and there fore a new oppressed class and new oppressor classes. Identity politics is the the mechanism for this and even where there may be a hint of real oppression it is hijacked by the high Priests and Priestesses of the cult of Political Correctness for their own self promotion and empowerment. Every individual within a so called minority group these people attach a label to has their individual voices stolen and are then forever "represented" by these antihuman, anti freedom, Marxian social engineers. There are plenty of gay men, for example, who disagree with the LGBT agenda but are now too frightened to speak out. They understand that they won the arguments for equality and now this is a war against the traditional family and decent civil society based on Christian ethos and morality. This is simply turning vast swathes of people against them and this anger is fermenting silently because speech and debate are so oppressed. The longer we allow the tyranny to continue and thrive the higher the price will need to be paid if we are ever to be free once more.

Fantastic, Bill! That sums up exactly my thoughts and concerns but with way more clarity and humor than I could muster. I have a three year old boy, live in LA and am regularly horrified by the by the insanity that comes out of the mouths of parents at the pre-school. One mother was boosting about how she was taking away her son's boy toys and trying to force him to play with girl's toys and then complaining how the boy was resisting. I have no problem if a boy gravitates to that out of choice but to force it on him means you can't tell if it's what he wants or if he is just seeking his mother's approval by playing with girl toys. What a mess. I now consider myself an anti-woke liberal. Is that even a thing?

Or maybe you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. Seriously... Maybe you should just let people be who they want to be, because it doesn't affect you in the slightest. Live and let live, mind your own business and realise that people don't have to conform to forms of being or thinking that others are comfortable with. Simple as that.
This is too complex to try to argue on a UA-cam comment thread. But if a kid likes the characteristics of the opposite gender and chooses to pursue acting them out it’s his or her prerogative. It’s when someone wants to defy physical nature by amputating themselves that should raise questions about someone’s mental well being. I just laugh when you demand from me to believe your lies when things are blatantly obvious….you’re either born male or female, period.
As an older gay man I have to concur with much of what he has to say. I find for instance the explosion in people who identify as nonbionary is something only a very rare few did back in the previous decades. A nonbinary person I spoke with spoke specifically about learning online what they were. My vibe of them - after getting to know them - is that they are a lesbian who is fairly masculine, not exactly an identity that needs a new category. In fact many older lesbian friends say fewer young people are identifying as lesbian, prefering to be nonbianary, which is a shame considering that those of us L and G people fought hard to make room for women to break the bonds of strict gender roles. As an older, white gay man I've also been told to shut-up, I have no right to have any input in the modern movement, a movement that I and the generations before me built! The truth is that the best statistics indicate we LGBT people make up around 4 to 5 percent of all humans. Truly trans people make up about one half of one percent of humans. That's a lot of people, but having people who dye their hair blue declaring themselves queer, just makes a mockery of those of us who were in fact "born this way."

The 2 most important ones being your role in reproduction and how easy it is to piss standing up lol. That's where the biology of it ends. Just about everything going on in your mind(that isn't some sort of neurological disorder) is psychological. The acronymic "T", included in the Gallup 20.8% of Gen Z LGBTQ individuals, represents less than 2% of the U.S. Gen Z population who are transgender. Less than 2% is a vastly different concept/number from 100%, which Maher explicated with his untethered, "All the babies . . . ". Is there a term that applies for when one exponentially exaggerates hyperbole? @1:37 "The ACLU recently tweeted a list of those who would be disproportionately harmed by this (loss of abortion rights). You would think women might top that list, no. Wasn't even on the list. Second on the list was LGBT. Really? Abortion rights effects gay and trans people more than . . . you know, breeders?" What a dickheaded diatribe. The ACLU's unranked listing of those at risk of disproportionate harm is as follows: ▪ Black, Indigenous & other people of color ▪ the LGBTQ community ▪ immigrants ▪ young people ▪ those working to make ends meet ▪ people with disabilities The ACLU erred in ascribing a reasonable level of intelligence and common sense to Maher and his producers. It seems apparent that the ACLU did not anticipate that people would miss the obvious . . . that abortion bans do "proportionately" harm all "individuals with uteri who can become pregnant" (at times incl. most women, many trans-men, some non-binary folks, etc.). Their list is clearly meant to identify the minority demographic subcategories, of the over-arching population with potential for pregnancy, which would experience harm "disproportionately". @2:13 "Not everything's about you." @4:03 "Compared to trans, gay is practically cis and cis is practically Mormon." The messages here are that (1) trans people struggling for equal rights, acceptance and dignity must mean they think everything's about them, what a nuisance, can't they just stop existing and (2) that trans people, being abnormal, weird, strange or de minimis . . . outliers, compared to everyone else, specifically gays, cis people or Mormons, are perhaps worthy of marginalization or dismissal and unworthy of equal rights, recognition of existence or necessary medical care. @2:35 "We're literally experimenting on children" @2:43 "We just don't know much about the long term effects." (of puberty blockers) "I don't understand parents who won't let their 9 yr old walk to the corner without a helmet, an epipen and a gps tracker. And god forbid their lips touch dairy, but . . . but hormone blockers and genital surgery . . . fine." Puberty blockers, GnRH analogues, administered with historical safety to children suffering from precocious puberty, since the early 80's, are only ever prescribed on a temporary basis, for a limited time period, during which patients are monitored for adverse reactions and side effects like loss of bone density. They would not be prescribed for a child as young as 9 unless that child exhibited precocious puberty. Also, I challenge anyone to identify any case where a 9 yr old has undergone genital sex reassignment surgery, as Maher implies here. @5:45 "Either Ohio is shaming them or California is creating them." Ohio Republicans are again seeking to restrict gender-affirming health care for transgender youth and prevent transgender girls from competing in female sports. Does this kind of legislation promote shame? Arguably yes, or at least inhibitive feelings which negatively impact the free expression of the lives of trans people/youth. One would have to torture words and concepts to construe the legal protections for trans people codified in California law as "creating" transgender youth in any way. Anecdotally, I know of transgender young people who have moved to California because of the legal protections afforded them there. @8:54 "I wanted to be a pirate." If only he had simply desired to be thoughtful and carefully accurate.
Even after 18 it is wrong. Medical doctors should not be removing healthy parts of the body for money. That goes directly against "to help, or at least, to do no harm."
You know who has spoken out about it is JK Rowling and she got major slammed for it. Caitlyn Jenner also spoke against that disastrous law that is devastating sports for women.
This is absolutely true and exactly the proof that everything we are as people/members of society is socially and environmentally conditioned. "Women" are what we teach them to be and men the same. The fact that not everyone installs the programming in exactly the same way is precisely what tells us that our variation is environmental, not biological.
There are no "facts" that support the idea that puberty blockers should be avoided. I usually like Bill but he's really losing me here. Refusing to treat transgendered kids because of our purely baseless beliefs we have that it's unhealthy to do so is right out of the Republican playbook. It's sick and borderline evil, and it's not right to stand with that kind of opinion.

If we can’t acknowledge the “trendiness” issue that Bill mentions here and talk honestly about just letting children grow to make these decisions at better times, I feel like everyone will just keep talking about it with hostility instead of open minds.
A lot of LGBT+ responses to this video saying that the increases in generations is because LGBT acceptance has become more widespread. While that may be true these same responses refuse to acknowledge the research that points out that in a teen friend group if one person comes out as trans, then it highly likely that the entire friend group will come out as trans. So were they all born in the wrong body? There is definitely a level of trendiness and even grooming going on that no one wants to admit.

Which what's pretty funny about that, and here's the thing about previous generations of lgwifi password, is that it was about passing and blending in before, just like prior to the 2010s it was more about normalization and equal rights. Like nobody actually wanted to be outlandish than drag queens or whatever, most people were trying to pass or blend in and fly under the radar. This is the complete exact opposite. It's the same thing as with all these fake disorders, people with REAL disorders aren't trying to get attention, they are literally trying (and often failing) to do exactly the complete f'ing opposite which is to blend in. Like kids who have bipolar or narcolepsy or tourettes, the last thing ANY of those kids want to do is draw more attention to their disorder, it's unbelievably mortifying, you DON'T want people to know that you are depressed. When I was a kid the only people who had tattoos were bikers, convicts and ex-military. Seriously. Then tattoos became a popular way to show how unique and rebellious you were and next thing you know, everyone has tattoos. People become addicted to them. What they are really addicted to is the attention. "Hey, check out my new piece". Look at dreadlocks in the NFL. Originally there were one or two guys with dreads. Then 5. Now its 20 guys per team and now dreads are popular and trending upwards in the gen pop. The ultimate irony is that things become trendy because they are unique, different. As soon as they become trendy the uniqueness is gone. People are so anxious to stand out and be unique, that they fall in line with all of the other 'unique' people. Same applies to this topic.

There is no other side in politics. However, there is the other side in economics. The world is divided in the upper class and the lower class. The left and the right wing politics is an idea preached to lower class, so that they can fight among themselves, while the upper class works on grabbing even more power and money. Everyone has a stance on most key issues, and nobody has a "left" or "right" stance on all key issues. Most so called left and right people on the planet will tell you that this trans agenda is garbage. Then why is it being pushed so much on all the media? It is being pushed by the upper class and they are trying to present it as a left wing agenda. It is just divide and conquer tactics. When liberal people in the media say "the LGBTQ community " as if it's monolithic it serves the right wing talking points. Why is it that these people can't say SOME members of the community? Fortunately, we were able to find professionals who hadn't drunk the "kool aid" and were able to help.
Yep, girls are definitely the most susceptible considering we are sexualized after puberty and many of us are extremely uncomfortable in our bodies because of it. But as a 35 year old woman who is not only content with but happy to be a woman, I would be very very upset at my parents had they allowed me to follow that path.

@@yvonnelee4385 it's because autistic people are less prone to go along with social conditioning into gender roles (I'm autistic) and so we don't fit in. And then engaging in reworked old school homophobic rhetoric to attack trans by claiming it's simply for attention is super weird for a liberal to do. Like honestly this stuff has similar vibes to old school histaria around "reefer madness"
Right, but you have to realize that these treatments can and do help some people. We need parents and adults to treat this issue in a balanced manner. We shouldn't just ban the treatments because currently some people who receive them later regret it. We need to do better so that people who are genuinely LGBTQ+ are accepted and receive the care they need while at the same time preventing children who aren't LGBTQ+ from believing they are. It's OK to question things, but the vast majority of friends I have in the LGBTQ+ community knew they were different between the ages of 4 & 10 and knew their preferred attraction by ages 8-12. The only ones who didn't realize it til later were people who were extremely sheltered and emotionally - and sometimes sexually - abused as children. We must raise children to live authentically and honestly and to let them know it's okay to be unsure about things and just to live life and love everyone... And to keep them off of toxic social media!
This speech will go down in History. One of the greatest of all time. The definition of “Real Time”. Thank you Bill Maher. P.S. I’ve watched this 5 times in full and sent it to every parent I know. All in agreement. #Enough
It's frightening how someone without kids can be worlds more insightful about children than far too many parents and so-called child "experts" nowadays. Well done Bill.
You don't have to be a lumber jack to tell if a tree being cut down is going to fall on a house or not. Just like you don't need to have kids to realize that forcing kids into something they don't fully understand is wrong. Example: I don't need to have kids to know that people that molest kids are bad or that the kids are going to have a hard time afterwards.
Cause it's always been a cope for bad parents to say "you can't understand you don't have kids" when someone brings a critical well thought out argument for why their strategy sucks.
They got sucked in by the compassion plea of the Trans folks. They claim their suicide rate is linked to lack of acceptance. But that makes no sense. Plenty of straights like me lack acceptance or support from their parents on any number of lifestyle issues including our job choice, partner choice, religion or political party. We aren't committing suicide like the trans folks. Understand why people go along with this and address it. The Left have become masters of emotional manipulation
All of this needed saying. Bill absolutely spot on. Loved the facial expressions of the lady who knows full well he's right but clearly felt obliged to suggest she disapproved.
Thank you Bill. I absolutely love the way you tackled this subject. I wish that more people with power and influence would do the same. When did we start getting so afraid of offending people by pointing out what is just common sense?
I could be wrong, but I don't think fear or offense has anything to do w it? although society has become so "soft & easily hurt & overly sensitive" that it's almost embarrassing being an American just about. but is virtually impossible to try & "reason" to someone who has zero common sense. it's like trying to reason or persuade an alcoholic during a binge. there is absolutely no rationalizing to someone who has no sense whatsoever.

@@sgshaday and no one nudged you into taking hormones, which at any age has deep consequences (some not so desirable like health problems).

Why do you have a problem with Trans people?
Liberalism is destroying the West.
You can thank Dave Chappelle for kicking down THAT door.
But even here he still uses their false narrative that they are somehow oppressed and "Marginalised"
How?

@@lavenderbee3611 so you don't believe in psychology? Many kids are in fact just being kids and exploring who they are, and should be left to explore and experiment so long as rash decisions aren't made that can't be undone or fixed. The whole concept of "gender identity" people are using is based around psychology, they use the words male and female to describe who they are mentally as a person, not what's in between their legs. This isn't some new concept either, it's just being more widely discussed and explored.
Your genitals determine very few things about who you are. The 2 most important ones being your role in reproduction and how easy it is to piss standing up lol. That's where the biology of it ends. Just about everything going on in your mind(that isn't some sort of neurological disorder) is psychological. Hormones do have an impact, but they do not determine how you walk or talk, your interests and hobbies, or anything about who you are as a person.
If someone really wants to make drastic changes to their body it is no business of mine. I hope someday medical technology advances to the point where people can fully transition, with functional reproductive systems, to the point where they can become the sex they want in every biological way. I'd say maybe this would shut people up about what makes a "real woman" but then the goalposts would be moved and it would be added that they have to be "born that way" despite being able to give birth and breastfeed lol.
Nobody should be forced or pressured into anything, especially at a young age, but people should be free to live how they see fit. I grew up in a house with a brother who collected porn mags and a dad who made all kinds of remarks about women on TV. My mother thought AIDS victims were beautiful because of their thinness. I wanted to be a model more than anything. No matter how much I starved myself, I could never be that thin and I stopped growing at 5’ 5”. I was literally told that I was too fat and too ugly to have a significant other. My mother was afraid that I was so desperate that I’d let some guy “take advantage” of me and end up pregnant. I developed an eating disorder. It took until I was in my 40’s for me to accept myself for who I am. I will never be tall and thin and on the cover of Vogue, but I have a Master’s Degree and speak three languages. I would have never reached that point without the love of my husband, who I’ve been married to for 38 years. He thinks I’m beautiful and smart. I'm thankful for the intelligent and humorous commentary. "Not everything is about you" is a useful phrase for our cultural moment.
Maher is simply disingenuously dishonest here.
@0:32 ". . . and 20.8% of Gen Z." (identify as LGBTQ) @1:03 "All the babies are in the wrong bodies?"
Really? Abortion rights effects gay and trans people more than . . . you know, breeders?"
What a dickheaded diatribe. The ACLU's unranked listing of those at risk of disproportionate harm is as follows:
▪ Black, Indigenous & other people of color
▪ the LGBTQ community
▪ immigrants
▪ young people
▪ those working to make ends meet
▪ people with disabilities
The ACLU erred in ascribing a reasonable level of intelligence and common sense to Maher and his producers.
@2:13 "Not everything's about you." @4:03 "Compared to trans, gay is practically cis and cis is practically Mormon."
The messages here are that (1) trans people struggling for equal rights, acceptance and dignity must mean they think everything's about them, what a nuisance, can't they just stop existing and (2) that trans people, being abnormal, weird, strange or de minimis . . . outliers, compared to everyone else, specifically gays, cis people or Mormons, are perhaps worthy of marginalization or dismissal and unworthy of equal rights, recognition of existence or necessary medical care.
@2:35 "We're literally experimenting on children" @2:43 "We just don't know much about the long term effects." (of puberty blockers) "I don't understand parents who won't let their 9 yr old walk to the corner without a helmet, an epipen and a gps tracker. And god forbid their lips touch dairy, but . . . but hormone blockers and genital surgery . . . fine."
Puberty blockers, GnRH analogues, administered with historical safety to children suffering from precocious puberty, since the early 80's, are only ever prescribed on a temporary basis, for a limited time period, during which patients are monitored for adverse reactions and side effects like loss of bone density. They would not be prescribed for a child as young as 9 unless that child exhibited precocious puberty. Also, I challenge anyone to identify any case where a 9 yr old has undergone genital sex reassignment surgery, as Maher implies here.
@5:45 "Either Ohio is shaming them or California is creating them."
Ohio Republicans are again seeking to restrict gender-affirming health care for transgender youth and prevent transgender girls from competing in female sports.

Honestly, I’m a left-leaning moderate who’s generation Z, and it gets really overwhelming that it feels like you can’t have open conversations about this specific subject. If we can’t acknowledge the “trendiness” issue that Bill mentions here and talk honestly about just letting children grow to make these decisions at better times, I feel like everyone will just keep talking about it with hostility instead of open minds.
Left leaning moderates are branded QAnon supporters if they speak out. That is the current reality.
He has some good points but I don't know that he's helping. There's a fair bit of John Oliver type outrage shtick going on which does not encourage open minded discussion. @@XmissrenegadeX That feels a bit overblown. All my friends are trans but I'm cis as heck. Half of it is "Look at me, I'm special and interesting now".
Like with cutters, I think most cutters I knew had hidden them, some pretty well. This is why so many girls had them on inner thighs or ankles or some shit.
@@drek9k2 One thing to always remember is that society as a whole follows trends. If something is hip and wild and makes you seem interesting, others will start copying it. If anyone thinks that young people arent willing to alter their identity in order to elevate their social media standing, they are delusional.

I bet that 99% of the self proclaimed lefties on the planet would tell you that a man has no business competing with women in sports. But the lefties or the right wingers are not making any decisions, the upper class is.

Gay, trans, and racist CRT sheate is being shoved down people's throats everywhere from schools to corporations to even the military now, and there is practically no backlash. Sorry, but Americans turned into a nation of pathetic cowards.
Nailed it Bill, where does it end?
Bill nails it. I was a tom boy growing up. Loved hiking, sports and doing what many considered boys' activities. Hated girly things. Thank God I did not grow up in the trans craze. When I hit puberty, I suddenly decided makeup, dresses, and being feminine wasn't such a bad thing because the boys liked it.
Same here!
As a boy, I'd like to thank you for being a girl. 😁
I’ve been wondering “what happened to tomboys?” for the past several years. Now, it’s your automatically trans
Same! Puberty changes everything! And screwing with puberty is just horrendous.
My experience was the same as yours but accepting the fact that I like dresses and heels really hit me in my late teens/ early 20s aside from the fact that I questioned my sexuality at one point during this time, too (hormones are a bitch XDDD). Thank God I went through all that craziness at a time when being part of the LGBTQ wasn't trendy. I had time to think and understand who I was without all these influences
I have not always been a Bill fan, but he nailed it with this closing monologue. Good for him!
Same. Originally found him to be very liberal in a cheap snarky kind of way. He's way wittier and more impactful now that he's moved more to the center politically.
@@RaptorFromWeegee Take it from a former liberal. It's because the far left has gone off the rails, but not as much as the right (thank goodness) which is why so many voters are becoming Independents.
@@RaptorFromWeegee I always wonder if he moved center or if the left has gone so far left that it’s left him looking more centrist. As the extremes move further apart it’s leaving a larger and larger segment of us in the center, which is maybe a good thing? I hope haha
@@jonathanaguayo7148 I dunno if any a this stuff is a good thing. Maybe the right is somehow secretly causes the left to more this far to the left in order to trigger a backlash and bring the right into major power.
@@jonathanaguayo7148 left has gone too far. meher never changed
I’m a staunch conservative and I’m scratching my head wondering why I’m agreeing with Bill Maher. You know the left has gone off the deep end when you agree with Bill Maher.
I’m a liberal…the extremes of both parties are messing up everything. Both sides now have to cater to the wack-jobs on the extremes to win the primary.
I feel literally the exact same way lol
Interestingly, he feels the same way about you! He had a decent interview with Ben Shapiro on the Sunday Special, btw. Surprisingly!
It’s the extremes getting louder. We contribute to that when we stereotype the way you just did and I have also done.
Yep....if Maher is not careful, he is going to turn into MAGA overnight...look what happened to Elon....
This is comedy gold! Keeping it real.😊 He’s got great comedy writers.
