"You can't be more offended than the victim." Excellent quote.
Drumjod ...tell that to Amber Guyger. 😒
But if one victim isn’t offended while thousands are that doesn’t mean that what was said wasn’t offensive
Maher got that comment from Rush Limbaugh.
But it's Bill himself who seems the most offended. Poor thing, the liberals have really hurt him.
sally forth No, they’ve bored him.
This is by far one of the best monologues of Bill Maher. As a black man, this is exactly how I feel. Well said every word.
Every single word he says is gold. He is elegant, smart and comical all at the same time!
Good one
Buddy, my other half has different color skin than me. Sharing differences with food, language, thinking about the world, beliefs, jokes, movies, games, recreation and more over years.
We are together because of love. We understand each other more because we chose to listen to each other's personal experiences and truths. I hope other people are fortunate to find that good and true family or friend or mate. Joy is realized when you can share that with someone else. Peace brother 👍🏼
I 1000% agree. Just acknowledge that the past has impacted the present and work on fixing it for the future. That’s it.
As a white guy, I hate woke ass white liberals almost more than I hate people who are actually outwardly racist. Those two groups of people constantly and only see everything in life through the prism of race.
The crowd was hesitant to cheer because they know they're the people Bill is talking about....
That’s what always makes it so foolish. Liberals constantly complain about rules and behavior they perpetuate and invent. That’s how stupid they are.
Just like Dave Chappelle's second joke on Sticks and Stones. Tweeting this out to the #ChurchOfWoke 😂🤣😂 👌🏼 . It's gold. .
Nice observation 👍🏽
Hahaha, EXACTLY!!! I love when he goes after white apologist/white guilt.

When I was just a little kid (born in 1960) my dad taught me "don't be prejudiced....assholes come in every color." I have never forgotten the crystal clarity of that. Thank you and R.I.P dad.
Humility is an attractive quality. Self-loathing isn't.
@Sherman neither is using offensive stereotypes to insult people.
@@mikey_vengenz Neither acting on a high horse for others as if you were in the right, yes it was something offensive but leave that to those who should feel offended about it. In this case. Bill.
Yeah so true I strive for the humility and struggle terribly with the other..
“Self-loathing“ or “self flagellation” could actually be a form of pride without a clear form of intent, if it means you hate yourself but don’t want to take responsibility for your actions and you want to place that responsibility on others
Attraction not their specialty.
90% of Twitter is offended by this.
Good one.
And Reddit
100% of college students are offended by this. 100% of minorities are offended by this. 100% of white kids, who never had to deal with racism in their life, are offended by this. 2020 is offended by this.

As a Thai person born and bred in Thailand, the first time I remember coming across this phenomenon was the criticism the movie The Impossible received. I watched it in a Bangkok theatre with a thai audience and the overwhelming consensus was that it was a deeply powerful movie that treated its subject (an English family experience of the 2004 tsunami disster), Thailand and Thai culture with respect and reverence. Only when I went online did I see the hate the movie got for showing only the white experience. As if human pain and suffering isnt universal.
Classic "how come you made the movie you made, and not the one I would have made?" criticism. Bill Maher has called out bullshit like that in other segments.
Yes and movies are typically made that focus on their target audience to be more relatable. It was a great movie and i thought also treated the Thai culture with dignity, and people i know in Thailand were directly effected, but i understood that a movie is not a social justice showcase, but a powerful story. Progressive "liberals" are making the country go backwards.
Impossible had mostly positive reviews and I was bored out of my mind.
Because they think white people are not humans so hence we cant feel pain.
@@martinpospisil3747 no, because white people destroyed most of Asia and Africa.
"You're not with a 'person of color'; you're with a person." I learned this lesson in about 1968, when my small-town public school hired one of its first black faculty members, to teach 4th grade.
My mom was a teacher's aide, and came home and related this story over the dinner table. She had been in the teachers' break room when a white fellow teacher asked the newly hired staffer, "Do you prefer to be called 'black', 'negro', or 'African-American'?"
The new 4th grade teacher looked the woman right in the eye and replied, "I prefer to be called Mrs. Humphries."
I never forgot that lesson, and I am grateful that in 1968, my mother saw fit to bring it home to my two younger brothers and me.
I don't think anybody said African American in 1968. I never heard it until the 90s.
@@frankmarsh1159 You had to be a special kind of liberal idiot to use the term "African American" in the 1960s.
@@frankmarsh1159while negroes was definitely the more used term. African American was definitely used in 1968
@@MrJimheeren According to several articles on the Internet the term African American was proposed by Jesse Jackson in December 1988 at the New Black Agenda conference in Chicago. I never heard it until well into the 1990's. When I was growing up in Atlanta the term that older people used was "colored". By the late 1960's "black" pretty much became the dominant term. So, because its not true in the immediate area that you live in, its not true? How small the world must be to you.
It's impressive how much people claiming not to be racist caring so much about the color of peoples skin.
That's the thing, if you are concerned with skin color, then you are racist. If you don't give a damn, you are not.
@Mr Olonzo Racism is the belief that one race is superior to others and deserving of special privileges. Babies are not racist.
What you are describing is *preference*. People tend to prefer their own group. This doesn't mean they believe their group is superior, it means they like being around people similar to them. This is an evolutionary trait that allowed gene groups to propagate themselves better.
Preference is not racism.

I love that a guy who has a lot of liberal leanings, is willing to call out the woke mob on their virtue signaling BS. They aren’t helping race relations, they’re stirring up animosity, and adding awkwardness to the equation.
It's like this fault line in Scotland that literally came to be loch ness over time. The best thing to do is just let these kinds of divides fizzle out over time. Eventually they themselves become something to laugh at and create new legends out of.
Bill is a classical liiberal. Definition per: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism
Woke is explicitly _illiberal_ . Intentionally. It just occurs on what the US regards as the politically "liberal" ("progressive") side of the aisle (in Australia, the Liberal party is actually the conservative/right-leaning party). But liberalism (again, above definition) spans both sides of the aisle.
Marxian critique of liberalism (again, definition above) is a core pillar of Critical Theory, including Critical Race Theory. They see liberal ethics, neutral principles of law, freedom of speech, etc, etc, as part of a grand conspiracy to keep minorities in their place. Not a joke. "Critical Race Theory: An Introduction" (Delgado/Stefancic) says this explicitly.
Agreed. I’m generally a liberal person but I find this virtue signaling nonsense irritating as hell, and I’ve called people out on it.
It's cause he's a classical liberal like someone else commented, having a calm-rational-discussion and opening a dialogue between opposing minds is actually possible with people like Bill, they actually resonate with fact and logic and aren't just mindless-brick walls with an 'all or nothing-I only want to be heard' petulant mindset.
Of course they are. Racial tension is big business. A lot of careers, in both the public and private sector, have been built on it.
"Hating all things white is just tedious virtue signalling".
Literally see this all the time on social media.
And practically all of those virtue signaling, white haters are white liberals.
K Dilli It’s also racist....
Sounds like Portland, Oregon
And wrong!
From left leaning people, or from right leaning people though?
Or people who aren't clearly either?
(The tern "liberal" can mean different things. In modern american parlance, it usually equates to "left wing" but it can also mean somewhat who supports classical liberalism, which could be seen as right wing, libertarian, or left wing, depending. Radical left wingers who lean towards communism/socialism often use "liberal" as an insult, i.e., someone who is on the american left but still supports capitalism to some degree, or someone who doesn't fully oppose it, or someone who is a moderate "reformer" as opposed to a radical revolutionary.)
He nailed this. I appreciate this so much. No one should be made to feel guilty for their skin color. We're all human.
@Albert Gront no I think she's talking about people like you that perpetuate racism at every turn.
I agree. I go like this “if you’re nice I will respect you, if you’re an asshole than I will treat you as such”
I've seen some progressive black yt channels where there's a lot of condescension and bigotry toward whites. Since I respected the host's opinions on other issues I started excusing the white hate. I quit watching when I realized I always left a video feeling bad about myself. It was like I was slowly getting brainwashed.
@James G In a perfect world that might be feasible, but that would cause more harm then good. People already distrust the government, and I don't think they would take kindly to taxes they had nothing to do with. Also their are the Native Americans who would need compensating, to be fair.

"... you're with a person"
- Bill Maher
This in a nutshell is everything that is wrong with identity politics!
Absolutely right.
Yes you're a person, but if you're a Marcus Garvey, a Malcolm X, a Nat Turner, a Patrice Lumumba, a Steve Biko, an Amílcar Cabral, a Toussaint L'ouverture, a Samora Machel, a Kwame Nkrumah, an Elijah Muhammad, a Fred Hampton, a Julius Malema, a Chris Hani, a Khalid Abdul Muhammad, a Malik Zulu Shabazz, or a Jeremiah Wright, then you're a "monster". These people were not preaching separation or segregation, they were not preaching anti-white bigotry or hatred they were preaching self-determination. Equality is not the absence of barriers are limits, equality is the ability for the black man woman and child to do for themselves just like any other race including white people can do for themselves! We do not preach "black supremacy", if anything, we preach supremacy over our own lives; but no! white folks don't want true equality! They are such a neurotic people, they feel like they should have DOMINION over everything! We do not believe in dominion over others, but they do! 😤
I have never agreed more with Maher than in that line.

Yes, you are with a person. Color, religion, sex, etc. are irrelevant.
@@NYYBBTeam unless describing a person. In a crowd you will describe someone with the most distinguishable characteristics that make tyem easy to spot and sometimes that might be skin color and there is nothing racist in that.
@Regina Buttons The Republicans started as an anti-slavery party. The KKK was almost exclusively something from the Democrats. So saying "historically neither has done anything to deter racism" isn't accurate. Now, if you want to talk about how each as evolved then that might be a bit more accurate....but in the scope of time the Dems have only turned themselves around recently....like the end of the 1960's. We can point fingers at both parties with specific instances, but your "historically" quip again isn't accurate.
@Regina Buttons Oh, I DO get it, I have a degree in history. But you used the word "historically", which accounts for a LOT of time. You might want to read up on the respective histories of each of the two major political parties.
@Regina Buttons The history of the different political parties are their origins. Some of the principles within each were seen up until not so long ago. Where did I say there isn't any racism today? There are some instances where being racist is illegal, but like it or not, people get to feel/believe as they wish, as stupid as their belief's may be.
People make up political parties btw.....and attitudes in each have changed over time. I'm not arguing with you, all I've said is when you use the word "historically" you need to first go back and look at a party's record.
That last minute should be required viewing in schools. It exactly sums up how we move past racism in this country!

Next step would be encouraging people to realise that pushin to change with a tribalistic and aggressive actions doesnt work, the best way about it and really that should be a given regarding living together and working together, is an open discussion and possibility to debate to make everyone's actual position clearer and encouraging people to tolerate those that arent mirror copies of themselves. In reality there will be racists for a very long time. And racism in itself is very complicated. Racism is not just conscious behavior, but also unconscious stereotypes. Not every racist is equally racists - like with everything there are shades. And most racists don't see themselves as racists, but mere "realists" - they usually think they are the good guys and people calling them out for their racism are the evil ones. Therefore racist jokes or whatever might not be the end of the world, they might be innocent and yes, there are often bigger problems, but it doesn't hurt to at least think about if it is really that important to fight for them or just laugh about something else. And it can't hurt to reflect why we might find such jokes so appealing in the first place and if we truly are completely non-racist.
So, just being non-racist is a good start, but if everyone would just ignore race and therefore racism, then we would ignore solvable problems - and often problems within ourselves.
I actually think that that is one of the reasons Trump got elected - people didn't want to reflect and Trump told them what they wanted to hear: You're not the bad guys, everyone else is, you're actually the victim. For the past decades we have tolerated the intolerant. For a very long time people didn't speak out - it was just an opinion and every opinion is valid, to be respected and to be never questioned, seemed to have been the idea since at least the 80s. And that prevented true self-reflection of us as individuals and as a society. The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging that there is one. We've allowed hateful ideas to exist under the guidance of "free speech" - even though countering one free speech with another free speech is not at all limiting free speech, self-censoring to never challenging problematic speech is much more likely to limit speech than using more speech, after all. I'm sure you know these situations on the bus or in any other public space; someone says something horrific and everyone around just stares at their phones. Of course racists are not going to change his or her perspective if they are never confronted - many of them don't know that there even is a problem.
So, yes, treat everyone with decency, no matter what individual characteristic one has. But also factor in that these individual elements of someone has an influence on their lives and don't ignore their individuality. And, more importantly, don't just be a non-racist, be an anti-racist and speak out against hate.
Your statement is great, but it's oversimplifying an extremely complex issue. And it calls for non-action, which doesn't only not solve problems, it might increase them. So, yes, treat everyone as a human being, not their characteristics, but also recognize that we don't live in a vacuum and we're all molded by the circumstances we were born into - ignoring problems is simply not the solution.
Again, not criticizing, I understand you mean well, I'm just adding to your very well intended thought.
And Maher is correct in what he is saying, but he is ignoring a big part of the story. It's just not as simple as he makes it out to be - racism is a little bit more complicated than every individual not acting racist. I liked this reaction to the discussion:

@@Scorch428 Hm... If that was true I would agree with you. Wanting to have advantages in society is not good for the rest of society. Egoism will always hurt everyone. And I'm sure that there are some people out of 7.8 billion people on this planet who think like that. I don't know what constitutes "a lot of them", but that seems to be an overstatement. Our boss is a black woman, one of our developers is a black man, and half my remaining coworkers are of east Asian or south Asian descent. We're a very diverse department but have never once brought it up because it's frankly never occurred to us to do so. We don't notice each others' races when we're on calls with each other, or spending hours at a time trying to solve problems together. We like each other, work well together, occasionally argue, but ultimately respect each other and our boss is the biggest reason for that.
