You’re wise , never risk what you can’t afford to lose. We all have experienced bad years just try not to brood, pick yourself up and keep going. You have many friends to ask advice and listen to you, thank you for being so honest.
I am so sorry to hear about your terrible loss with these calves.
Thanks for your honesty. Farming is not for the weak.
Sorry to hear that you had such a loss. Hoping things get better from here. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Wowzers...that's harsh dude.. you always get my thumbs up for what it's worth.. hope things turn around for you.
Man that's tough!! One thing I always love about your videos is you share the good and the bad. I'm sorry you took a bath on these. If you're anything like me though you're like the farmer they ask about the lottery. "What would you do if you won? " "Farm till it's gone" One thing I always try to remember is that even in a bad year, with farming if you can't sell you can always feed yourself. Cause you can't eat money.
First time here and love that you got straight to the point and didn't drag me through a whole video of daily chores before you got to the point! Not that daily chores aren't important but I won't watch someone doing daily chores of basic feeding and gathering eggs that I do every day to get to the point of why I'm watching a video. Thank you!
A saying I've heard many times "Keep on, keeping on."
I raised calves for 10+ years and did well on some ,took it in my the shorts on others. The last few years I have not been able to get it to work on paper so haven't even bought for 3 years. I work at a local Salebarn and our calf prices are just outrageous. Hol/Angus bull 5.00 a lb. Hol/aug hfers 4.50 + a lb hols bulls 2.50-2.75 a lb. Hol hfers ( a year ago we couldn't get .23-.30 a lb for the nicest calve you can imagine) 2.00 a lb. I have decided setting in the house when it is -20 below zero is my best idea. I am glad you found out the problem and the solution
As you said it is not the end of the world. I hope your o see you hold to the good heifers that you got, don’t sell, breed them and get the calfs and steers that you need to sell. Don’t sell the ones that you like. Wishing you all the best and at the end of the days it is your decision and I am not a farmer.
Oo! Prayers
Great video and good luck .. TQ Sir
I'm sure you'll do well in the future. You have a very good business sense.
stories like yours are how legacies are made
Thank you for sharing.🐂
wow that was not a productive sale. but hey, better than nothing.Hopefully the next batch will do alot better. Hugs buddy ,love you .
yeah these things can happen...on the upside...things can only get better hopefully.
Hi enjoyed your video your honesty as allways. Do you produce feed for your animals? That's a loss that city people dont see. Have a great day.
You know I would pay to come and work on your farm with you for a couple of weeks? I live in Milan in Italy and watch your videos from all the way over there in America...I'm fascinated. Thank you for your content.
Man that's tough... hang in there.... like the hat BTW
Dang. We've always had decent luck at the Fort Scott sale barn. I haven't seen all of your videos - apologies if you have gone there.
Quite a loss considering all the work u put into the calves
Sorry they did not sell well. I sell my 50/50 bottle calves straight off the farm and have had way better luck. I got 1.65ish for 440 ish steers and 1.50 ish for the hiefers and do not have to pay for hauling or the sale barn fees. I sale by the head for no one argues about weight. I have 2 guys that buy most of them.Hope next round goes better.
I’m new to this and Curious as to the strategy with bottle calves. Thanks for the learning in advance
Wonder about white muscle disease. I’ve seen that with bottle calves. A shot of selenium makes the difference. Sorry for your loss. This was the first time I watched your video.
where do you find all your calves? I love these profit or loss vids I am super new and green to cattle and sometimes looking at the data is the best way to go about it! I only have 3 calves right now but I am raising more for freezer meat and not sale barn but i would love to look at other opportunities
Ever onward!!!
you need to try raise,n those calves in pens outside one calf per pen. huts are the best!! u need sunlight to kill the pathageons if you raise them inside a barn. if one gets sick within hours in spreads through the whole barn . sun ligth is the only thing that kills pathageons
I am sorry this happened! I do not understand why.
Recently In Mississippi nothing young as a year has been selling for under 2.40lb just for steers and helfers
so did the bottle calf farmer have any suggestions as to what intervention to save your herd might be when you get 'Collustin A' ?
interesting video. thanks
Oof, that's rough. In years past, you'd said you'd heard of stories like this. One just hopes it'll never be YOU that has a similar one to tell later on.
Yup. I guess it was my turn lol. But it was a good lesson learned!
@@FarmandHammer yes, sir.
Damn man that sucks ass!!
I've always wondered, I mean I've seen your videos about your cows giving birth, why do you buy bottle calves? Why not just collect the calves when a day or so after they're born?
I would imagine that would greatly help your bottom line to not have to buy bottle calves. I honestly want to know.
You are my go to spot for info about raising bottle calves for when I start raising my own.
Only raise bottle calves when there is a shot supply of stockers
Sorry to see this. Are bottle calves insurable?
Tuff one hope you sell better in your next sell
Salers Barn ever sold on Reserve//minium price? Totally out of your control-bummer.
I quit selling at the stockyards never get a good price
For all the effort and expense you’re having with bottle calves, I believe I would rethink that phase of farming.
Got a show a loss somewhere for the taxes lol
For 33 yrs found my buyers on craigslist
Sale barn rips you on that type.
Facebook now, but no doubt.
You did not get burned. You sold at auction, no other way to get a more accurate price based on quality of animals presented for sale. Bottle calves will lose you a lot of money, there’s a reason we cow calf producers sell them. There’s no profit.
Have u tried selling on Craigslist or the paper?
Hey is that at Joplin mo because I live only a couple hours away from there and I go there a lot
You need better stock. It doesn't pay to feed utility calves.
i give you an A+ for reporting your hardship year finances. I wouldn't do bottle calves....they need their mothers...come join us cattle producers and breeders...skip the bottle calf and milk mixing. There's a reason why only chicken and pigs can be massed produced for packers...cattle need long time in the natural fields with their mothers...4 to 6 months...makes for a healthy no-cost born-on-ranch calf going to market for solid profits.
What a bummer!! You will survive!! Chin up, my friend ! Peace from SW Florida 😢!! Bring on those pigs😅😅!!
Wow😢
I was at the sale in Joplin I’m the one in the orange shirt down on the right
Well if you didn't have hard times, you wouldn't know how to appreciate good times. Make hay while the sun is shining. Cheers.
Is that Joplin stock yards
Holy cow, what a bummer. If you had been able to keep them longer, would it have made a difference?
I think selling them at 700lbs would have made a big difference but it would have cost me quite a bit more in feed so I’m not sure it would have paid. Another local sale had a Holstein steer sale the same week and ones the same weight as my angus x Holsteins brought 1.75. Must have just not been any buyers interested when I sold mine.
@@FarmandHammer That's what I was thinking, bad timing or the luck of the draw.
Sounds like bad timing, everything is sky high right now.
Since you have the video, can you talk with your JRS field man and ask why they brought what they did? If you do I would be interested in what explanation is given.
Junk dairy cross bottle calves, they brought what they were worth.
Bottle calves and dairy stock tend to get docked on average. But I would think you should find a better market to sell calves
Your not allowed to yell "NO SALE"?
You’ll never have a mortality rate like that agin in bottle calves
i believe inYa...
Wow. Time to find a new place to sell your calf's here in north central Arkansas on the low end for 300 to 400 steers $2.30
Joplin I think you may know some family of mine
Sold them too early, best next time
so wonderful beautiful video friend Isaac i love it see so nice
Tax write off , good luck Sir
That’s about the only positive in the whole situation lol
we have pretty good holstein market around here their motto the crosses need to look like their dad not the mom
Don't pay more than the AI bill and loading it up on bottle calves. They do better in a greenhouse.
Are you harvesting k31 this year?
Actually have a neighbor harvesting some of ours today. Won’t have as much as usual. After last years drought, it just didn’t make much.
@FarmandHammer would love to see video!
Well you won't have a tax problem then, thanks for being honest and.. it sucks
I'd stick with the bottle calves for a few more years. You just had over half your herd wiped out this year. Chances of it happening again are low. Save the money from your next two or three bottle calf raises and upgrade to some quality beef heifers. If you come across good looking heifers from your bottle calf herd, keep them.
Chances of it happening again are huge, unless he changes management!
Cos they got no shape
yeah, they were on the thin side...you lose 50 to 75 cents a pound.
Ouch! Do you want to raise some pigs again? They might bring some fast cash; but, I’m not as savvy as you and other farmers/ranchers. The calves were dear, lovable creatures……very docile and compliant.
I’ll be raising pigs in the future but it may be a while. Still have pork in the freezer!
@@FarmandHammer calves in are area are bringing 900 dollars and there anywhere from 1 week to a month but luckly i got some for 250 and a 100 dollars
in nebraska
High risk cattle are what they are…….high risk. Don’t by jerseys, buy beef cattle only. It’s hot and those calves you sold are a risk to the next guy too. Learn from it. Move on. Buy better calves next time. And keep moving forward.
You mentioned 100 dollars for vaccines for 65 calves, perhaps you should have spent more
You mentioned your father's barn. How many calves were in that barn at one time? And when they were dying were they in the barn? And when they were dying, what was the advice from you 10:54 veterernnarian?
You mentioned grain? What were you feeding? You mentioned hay as not much of an expense, why?
225 dollars for those bottle calves ? Dear lord they used to damn near give them away in Ohio and Pennsylvania as long as you was quick to
Come get em that’s crazy! Good luck 👍 🇺🇸
$50 to $100 was the norm for a long time
@@LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC I wouldn’t pay more than 100 period he’s getting his ass burnt on profit margins
@@LarsonFamilyFarm-LLC I would buy 10 for 500 dollars that had there mommies colastrum or however it’s spelled
Uh, your information is very obsolete! Newborn beef calves in se ks now June of 23 are as much as 600 dollars per head, and those are profitable!
You are correct about damn near give them away, that's because they were damn near worthless! One can buy a calf damn near worthless, raise it up and sell it like it is still damn near worthless!
So the 6 heifer calves - did they go to a feedlot as well or do you think they were bought as replacement heifers?
Well having a year long sale close by already u should've waited. Most ppl would've gone there and spent all of their money already
Oh well
dealers took u for the ride m8 u need to give written instructions they carved u up not drafting quality agents are parrasites
Just thin calves that’s all. The really fat fancy ones do much better.
Thats crazy.Prices here are over $3/lb. Wed sale dairy bobs were going for $10.40/ lb
thin looking
👍👍❤
I disagree! I wouldn't be involved in any business that has a bad return! You can make a bigger profit!!! Just have to figure it out! Hook up with a local business! Sell for profit not a loss! FJB POS
Your dealing in junk cattle... Get junk price... Buy better quality will really pay off. And you'll sleep better...
well it only cost you 11 grand for the priveledge of doing all that work and all the fun of it, aint farming great!
I love paying to work. It’s even better than working for free 😂
@@FarmandHammer haha exactly
