    THANK YOU very much for honestly sharing this info. It is really helpful for non-cattle ranchers to understand the process, the costs, etc.

    Rarely, do you see sale barns going out of business because of lack of profitability. Everything is stacked against the small operators. Very educational video. Great job.

    Isaac, I fully enjoyed this. The people saying to figure your labor are wrong. You only HAVE to figure out labor if that is a n expense that you are paying someone else to do. You made a profit each year so your experiment was a success. Also, if they want a fair cost analysis vs profit, you'd have to include your expenses for gopro's and profits received from UA-cam. Essentially, you were paid twice for your efforts. All in all, it's really difficult to put a price on something that made you feel pretty damned good, right? Phenomenal analysis overall and I would do this every year if I was in a position to be able to raise hogs and bottle calves. Thank you for being so honest about profit and expenses.

      Regular hourly jobs have to account for vacation sick & holiday pay insurance etc. Years ago at a job everything was expended out for regular 40 hour weekly pay so it cost the company less per hour for time & a halve overtime. Of course cheap bosses never took this into account. At the phone comoany years ago while performing a 3 year switchover it was cheaper to have men work 57 hours a week ( 17 hours a week OT ) then to hire more help.

    Good video to start with sheep I wood section off five 1acre paddocks then start with 10 ewes and a ram then sell your ram lambs and runt and invest in more ewes and invest year ones money in buying 5-10 new ewes a year to go which your exiting ewes and home raised ewe lambs in 3-4 years you will have a mob of 50 ewes if you keep up this plan for first 3 years buy year 4 you should be able to keep all your profits and just focus on that years ewe lambs growing for replacement .also buy the best ram you can afford especially year 2 and 3 as you will have more ewes and it will be more crucial year one its not a huge deal but buy a good looking one that will complement your ewes ..

    Super late to this video - we watch our calves sell in February of this year and they put "short" on one of our calves that weighed similar to the rest. Nothing wrong with him, they just said "short". We got ripped off, you most likely got ripped off. I later heard of it happening to a few other producers at the same barn. It is a bit unfortunate.

    What’s generally the best weight to sell them at. Last year I did around 600 but I can see ur going much lower??

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  2 роки тому

      It all depends on your cost per lb of gain. With high corn prices you might be better off selling at a smaller weight and getting more $ per lb than selling at 600lbs. Cuz it may cost you more to get to 600lbs and you might not profit as much. You’ve got to do the math and check your local prices at the sale barn. Who knows, you might be better keeping them till 900lbs
