    A teacher I had for History of Fashion once referred to Versace as “Clothes for high paid Vegas strippers”. I wasn’t that surprised about Michael Kors buying Versace. Versace is very new money and never was classy. Gianni Versace himself said he made clothes for the mistresses of married men, and Armani made clothes for their wives.

      The phrase was actually "I dress sluts, you dress church ladies". It was a joke and Gianni used the funny Italian word "zoccola", which is not really translatable in English: it's a playful way to refer to women who are not ashamed of showing skin, who are libertine and don't care about judgements. It is actually an empowering term.
      Oh and by the way: only ugly and provincial women use the word "classy"

      michellebelledejour THAT'S A LIE Gianni Versace did NOT make clothes for mistresses.
      www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/news/donatella-versace-hits-out-at-rude-and-tasteless-giorgio-armani-10195721.html
      GO READ THIS ARTICLE: HERE IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. *(read more below)*
      Donatella Versace has launched an attack on fellow Italian designer Giorgio Armani for comments made about her late brother Gianni Versace, in a recent interview.
      Armani was quoted in The Sunday Times referring to a conversation with Gianni Versace in which the designers were comparing their customers.
      Armani said that Gianni, *"He was talking to me. We were in Rome and we met in the Piazza di Spagna for a fashion event. He was looking at the models and Gianni said to me, 'I dress sluts. You dress church ladies,"*
      Donatella Versace swiftly responded with a statement heavily criticising Armani for his *rude comments about her dead brother.*
      Donatella responded back to Armani and said
      *"I find it extremely RUDE and tasteless that Mr Armani has once again PUT WORDS in to my brother's mouth, especially because he is sadly NO LONGER WITH US to reply."*
      *"This is the 2nd time Armani claims this was said by my brother (that he made clothes for sluts)"*
      *"The first time Armani said this was immediately after my brother's death and after I was offended, Armani apologised to me."*
      *"But let me say this....My brother never made clothes for mistresses or sluts."*
      *"When my brother spoke about fashion the only word that ever came from his mouth was GLAMOUR."*
      *"What SHOULD BE said about my brother is: may Gianni Versace rest in peace."*

    could you make a video on what brands are actually “worth the money”? Im someone who prefers to invest in fewer, but better/more high quality pieces that will last for longer, but obviously I’m not a multimillionaire with a causal million to spend on my closet every year... so I’d love your opinion on what brands/designers actually have substance ❤️

    • @TheEmpress1768
      @TheEmpress1768 5 років тому +49

      This is going to sound controversial, but no luxury brand is worth the money. The point of luxury is to spend money to show off how much you have. Thorstein Veblen wrote about this in "The theory of the leisure class." It's mostly about how the upper classes buy and waste things to be seen as fashionable.

    • @SoraCyn
      @SoraCyn 5 років тому +15

      John Orozco I totally understand your point, and agree with it at least in application to mainstream “luxury” brands... But I think I look to “luxury” not for the “ivegotmoneylookatme”ness, but rather for the quality (at least, they used to be an assurance of quality, anyway). I also think it’s important to pay artists/designers what they are worth for clothes/goods that actually have thought put into them on how they function/wear on a body.
      However, There’s so much talk about how quality has gone down despite price increases especially these past few years (LV comes to mind, but i’m sure there’s still plenty that’s in a similar boat). In reality, i suppose what I’m looking for is a assurance of quality.
      I may be better off looking at indie brands, but being indie, there’s just so *many* of them to dig through, and it’s hard to understand who’s the real deal. So I go back to option B, and try to find semi-luxury brands/ up-and-coming designers who I hope haven’t yet sacrificed quality quite yet🤞

    • @nox8312
      @nox8312 5 років тому +5

      Cynthia C yeah John Orozco is right, there's no real relationship between price and quality, it's just marketing. obviously people that spend that much on things want them to be of quality so it's pretty easy to convince yourself that if you paid more it's better, after all why would you want to pay more for something that is the same or lesser quality? but yeah the only real way to find quality long lasting things is to be knowledgeable about what "quality" is for the item you're looking for - research fabric technology and durability and functionality, and don't rely on the marketing to tell you what the product will be like. which is easier said than done obviously, it's not always easy to find information about things without marketing getting in the way, but yeah, you'll have a better hit rate by educating yourself about fabrics and garment construction etc, than by just looking at the price tag or the reputation of a brand. there are certain subsections of the clothing industry that rely on their reputation for utility-focused and durable garments (certain outdoor or sports brands etc), where their brand success relies a lot more on whether their consumers find their products useful and durable, but there's obviously still the factor of marketing and depending on the brand, they can be really high quality or not that great but with great branding. so yeah.
      also a lot of these luxury products are barely used by the consumers that buy them, because they can afford to buy lots of different things and wear them once or twice, or buy multiple pieces, plus it's generally seen as not fashionable among rich people to wear things multiple times - so just for those reasons alone the chances of luxury items being durable is pretty low. they're not made to be durable, they're made to convey class status, or class aspirations, to the people around you. if they're durable it's more of an accident than anything. they play a game of balance between keeping their production costs low to maximise profit, and giving the impression of value to the buyer to maintain their brand and reputation.
      also super long comment sorry but just one more note - paying more definitely doesn't guarantee the laborers involved were fairly compensated for their work. In this society, due to capitalism, we rarely ever pay the full value of someone's labour, because that's where "profit" is taken from - the gap between the true value of the workers labour and what they were actually paid. if they were fully remunerated there would be no profit, which is why capitalism is built off the backs of exploiting workers.

    • @LadyLocket
      @LadyLocket 5 років тому +10

      If you're not fussed about branding but want good quality pieces to last try getting to know any local seamstresses, designers or craftspeople. Generally, they can offer to order, handmade, well-crafted pieces and often you can be a part of the design conversation. Independent home-based and boutique owner designers are often overlooked or ignored but can offer wonderful, one of a kind clothing.
      One point of caution though, do look into what they make and have a conversation with them about what materials they use. This will give you a chance to see gauge their personality, passion for what they create and give you a good idea on how important quality is to there work. Those who are good know the value of their time and work so you will get what you pay for.
      I have some beautiful dresses and coats that always garner compliments and questions about where I got them. They are unique, fit my shape, taste and personality, on top of that, it's nice to know I'm helping to support the local economy new designers. You can also find similar craftspeople making shoes, bags and hats who do incredible work. People are trained by media and advertising to immediately think of the big brands when looking quality, which is very restrictive to the buyer.

    • @SoraCyn
      @SoraCyn 5 років тому +2

      Delicious Friend Thanks for taking the time to comment. The thing about sportswear clothing is that although they are typically good quality, they are also sportswear- generally lacking in artistic design. Justine Leconste is an excellent up-and-coming designer who has made videos on quality, fabric, etc. of designing clothing. (and thinking about it, I probably don’t hate looking like I can afford (frivolous) things in life, though it’s not my main goal). So, short of dedicating a ridiculous amount of time browsing the internet in search of the rare but talented up and coming designer, I don’t really think there’s a great easy answer to my original question (except maybe traveling all the way to paris to look in the nooks and crannies of alleyways in search of the next jimmy choo😂)
      but also, i do feel like artists and seamstresses should make profit- just maybe not at the level at which the major houses are shadily making... or capitalism gone rampant.

Donatella is an artist and not a moneydriven heartless designer as MK might be. Actually, Gucci was owned by Investcorp. When Arnault started to buy stakes in the company, Tom Ford & Domenico De Sole went to see Francois Pinault (father), who at the time wasn't involved in the luxury market, to counteract Arnault's plans. As Pinault wasn't involved in that industry, Tom Ford was named creative director of the group and was responsible with choosing which fashion house they had to buy.
    Versace is acutally doing 600M but you're alright, the estimation was way too much but it was also the same case for Fendi when LVMH bought it.
    I really don't understand the people who are acting like it's the end of the world or those who are saying that Gianni wouldn't approve.
    I'm sorry but Gianni is dead and if he was still alive, the history of the entire fashion house would have been totally different.
    It was impossible for Versace to not sell. It was a family business at first but Santo is not handling the finances anymore, Allegra doesn't have the capacity of handling this whole entire business on her own and Donatella, while being the face & creative director, will not live forever. So what's the point of keeping it in the family business if the family can't handle it?

    Creatively, Donatella has never been able to fill Gianni's shoes. The brand lost its Gianni magic when she took over. As for MK, he's designs are as exciting as the Donna Karan brand. Let's not even raise his recent NYFW-showcasing!!!! One bland brand buying another bland brand...what am I not seeing?

    The thing is that Versace has been one of the few luxury brands that have stayed family owned and I think this idea makes people feel like its more luxurious because these brand histories and how they started and the big family name it’s all of what essentially makes a brand luxurious and special which is why brands like Hermès and Christian Louboutin refuse to sell and it does make them seem more special or dedicated to their customers not just like the other luxury brands nowadays that just want to sell and make money because it’s main focus is “business” not “luxury” and Micheal Kors being a brand that has been trying to be luxurious but can’t seem to make it, buying Versace sounds like a big deal because we seem to associate Versace with Gianni and Donatella and their family legacy and all that when in reality it’s doing what a lot of luxury brands have already done ! Even though it really isn’t anything new I kinda do think it’s a big deal and I’m lowkey sad because for me I really did enjoy the brands legacy and I actually do like some of her pieces but anyways we should all just move on now because what is done is done!

    • @attilaboda9881
      @attilaboda9881 5 років тому +2

      Exactly! Without the family-ownership, it does not make much sense any more. Quality is out of question... we are not in the 1970s any more... A lot of clothes (if not all) are made in Asia... Even Versace Collection. And even though it is said to be "tacky" .... I think Versace is a good type of flashy clothes: it has a Scarface-vibe aroud it (I disapprove minimal design.. its a ripoff to me). So it is a big loss, that the Versace family (esp. Allegra) has sold it :( Now I can only trust Armani.

    Michael Kors started out as a high end designer brand similar to Marc Jacobs. But i guess when he was in project runway, he gained fame so he repositioned his brand as accessible leather goods brand and it worked and hit big time. With the market saturation, the brand became synonymous to being tacky and cheap. The new partnership with Versace seems off at first bec it would have been better if the buyer was lvmh or kering who specializes in managing high end luxury brands as opposed to michael kors who is in the middle but at the end of the day it is all about giving Versace the machinery and financial support to reach its potential. As long as the main people in Versace are still there and still will have the last say then it is all good.

    I'm not an expert on business OR fashion, but my only guess for the 2.12bn price tag is name recognition. If it's gonna work how you stated in the video and Versace is going to keep being Versace, then it makes less sense. But if Michael Kors is gonna pull a Michael Kors and try to start slapping the Versace label on cheaper goods, then maybe they're paying for the name. People who are buying things just for the label (much like Michael Kors' outlet goods etc...) are gonna eat that sh*t up.

    Tbh this is actually a good opportunity for Versace. Being part of a bigger business frame can offer the brand more budget to do whatever they want. Versace can get even bigger if the people at "Capri Holdings or whatever" know how to. But the brand isnt gonna die, wtf. Actually now that's its part of a bigger thing its secured to stay and not just randomly be on bankrupcy like some other brands that just die. Donatella is still gonna design for it cause at the end is a family business and "its what Gianni wanted" but at the same time she needs to understand Versace has a lot of name and potential since the Gianni days and actually make good collections. This spring 2019 was annoying af

      Try to tell me 1 (one!!!) European company, which actually benefited from American ownership! Volvo and Jaguar were suffering under Ford's reign. GM killed SAAB. Nokia was devastated by Microsoft.... Nike bought Umbro, then rather sold it quickly. Michael Kors is lacking class and they will bring Versace down to their shopping mall-level.

      Its not that difficult to design a Versace item: 1. make it black, 2. add tigers/panthers/ Baroque prints / greek keys, 3. paint the remaining part with gold/ teal. 4. write "Versace" on it 5. write a "0" to the end of the pricetag.

I feel that a lot of Italian brands have a tendency to stay privately owned or "in the family" (Prada, D&G, Valentino, Armani). Wondering if Capri sees it as an "untapped" market and is coming in the try and sweep them up.
