A couple of years ago, I heard of a concept called "optimistic nihilism." In layman's terms, it means life is meaningless, and humanity's existence serves no greater purpose, so you might as well spend your life enjoying it and making the world a better place for others. That's basically how I operate.
Well, there's still an ideology in there somewhere, isn't there? If you want to make the world a better place, that means that there is some target to work towards. So the question moves away from an existential problem to a social problem. What does the world look like that you want to leave behind? That's driven by ideology.
He seems to believe I'm gonna pay attention to philosophy while he's naked, with this make-up, looking straight to the camera like this and holding 2 fucking snakes

@@freedomofspeech2867 Well first off I've actually been defending Jordan in this comment section. Secondly, saying that my behaviour is 'so fucking white' (ignoring the two prior replies my comment was imitating) is an example of a prejudice against a race, and therefore textbook racism. Thirdly, objectivity is a concept entirely generated within the human mind. Your entire perception of the world is subjective, which is why the primary crux of all philosophy is 'I think therefore I am'. At the base of all assumptions is the belief in the self. Besides from that, I do actually like a lot of what Jordan says, and the majority of criticism against him I've seen has been fairly nitpicky or not even criticism against him, but against an individual's perception of his ideas. He's not a perfect man by any standards. Both the Bible and the literal definition of the word define the impossibility of perfection. He has also said things that I disagree with, however I still believe he is a good man, and a pretty great clinical psychologist. Try not to approach arguments with the standpoint of insulting your opponent. Jordan himself says that if you insult everyone who disagrees with you, you can't accept anyone to change their mind.

Would you even sit down with him to have a talk or are you to woke and intellectually superior? LOL you are small.
Onlyhas99 admittedly I’m not well versed in relativism, but like stated in the video I have always heard JP describe relativism & post modernism with negative connotations. It was refreshing to hear an counter argument on the topics so I didn’t essentially demonize them entirely. To be honest though, I think I’m going to take some time to do some reading on post modern and relativism so I can have a concrete opinion. I also liked his take on hedonism, never really thought about it that way- seems to me it’s a lot like the philosophy Objectivism that Ayn Rand puts forth.
Watching this again. As a theatre-specialist, I love the reminder of how much these disciplines intersect. Thanks for reminding me how I learned things . I often bring up theatre when speaking to philosophy-specialists, and usually it’s me understanding their disciplines, but them having no idea about mine.
It's honestly one of the main things that made me subscribe. Mr. Thorn hasn't a habit of just making up his facts and figures. :DD It's refreshing to listen to and consider a thoughtful, well-crafted, reasonably-researched essay....not just because it supports his arguments, but it also makes it that much easier to pursue even further delving into a particular point if one wants to.
I'm glad I found someone with an opposing view. I have been stuck in an echo chamber for the past few months. There were things I could agree and disagree with. Thank you for sharing your views.
Good for you dude. It is normal to have agreements and disagreements. Dr. P is an amazing orator, and a sharp thinker, albeit with his own flaws. He is often incorrect, but his orator skills can make you think (and convince you) otherwise. This is particularly the case for fields/subjects on which the listener doesn't know much. I remember I got into Dr. P years ago, during bill C16 heyday and before the intellectual dark-web garbage. I was listening to a lot of his lectures and nodding my head. Then, when he started talking confidently about environmental issues, claiming "he read everything he could get his hands on", I just heard him failing miserably to understand the issue. The thing is, I am also well-read on ecology/environment (just wrapping up my PhD in env.sci), and I could see clearly the bullshit, while for the issues for which I was a n00b, he could convince me that cranes walk and penguins fly. I am grateful to Dr. P and his bulls****g skills, since he made me into a better person. I actively tried to understand how people communicate since, and how to read between the lines and words they say. There is a lot of good takeaways you can get from Dr. P, however I was lucky enough to stop paying attention around the time when he got into lobsters, steaks, hanging out with Ben Shapiro, and essentially became a stepping-stone for western-nationalists (It's a whole different can of worms). There is much more wisdom and beauty to be found around beyond Dr. P, so go clean your room, and go read a book, contemplate your houseplants (or better yet, outside nature), and go tell your loved ones you cherish them.

Hi Oliver, As a Peterson fan, a lobster, and an individual, I'd like to thank you for your insightful take on aspects of Peterson at which I have raised an eyebrow for a while. Reading some of the comment section I see references to similar thinkers and ideas that I will check out to broaden my view. Peterson's work reached me on a level that really picked me up and seriously motivated me. It was not his political philosophy that spurred me but his life advice. Consideration of your video has furthered my ability to think independently of ideology. Which really... Is all I want. It was actually a proper fear of mine that as I referenced him more and more, I was becomming an ideologue. I think you've put the fear to rest as I have some cemented disagreements with him now. Keep it up. -Stephen. PS: Sucks about Sony music. That Mr. A cover was actually super enjoyable.
Well, congrats on not getting caught in a validation gang. Anti-ideology can easily become an ideology simply by a change in the way you as an individual relate to the information given to you
Olly covers this in a previous series (I think it's What Was Liberalism, which I dearly recommend), but Ideology is the process of choosing what facts matter most for organizing society. Essentially, some facts are going to be more or less pertinent, and Ideology is the filter (eg: light from the sun takes 8 mins to arrive to earth vs. wealth isn't distributed fairly for x, y, z reason). It's important to criticize your ideology, but denying you have one or trying to escape it is going to be counterproductive. Anyways, you've got a lot of good content to look through, I envy you as I've already done the major part of my bingeing hahaha
@@marinchapuis8720 I guess what I really meant was 'a Peterson ideology'. I know one can't do away with their ideological position. Thanks for the recommend video :^)
@@stevenodriscoll2378 Don't take this the wrong way, but I can't help but read this a some sort of unnecessary confession. Everybody has to live their lives based on principles, and for the majority of people who found inspiration in JP, well, they did so out of self improvement. Politics sort if forced its way due to surrounding controversy and political climate. For me (partially at least) an ideology claims that it has an all-encompassing blueprint necessary for organizing human civilization. I agree on your position as well. Peterson on the other hand indeed makes many interesting suggestions, but time and time again, he states that he might be wrong, he may need to reflect, or he just outright states that he doesn't know. If the core of his message is focused on the individual, aren't you doing the exact thing that is expected of an individual mindset, remaining skeptic while acknowledging the constraints/facts that force us to play by the rules?
@@KuraIthys Okay. Maybe. But the same argument could be made of any predator species, including our favorites, the kittehs and doggos -- doesn't stop them from being in the "Cuteness Overload" club.
Came here year ago with a foggy mind and a deluded, close-minded attitude, that only made me think of a way to disagree with you, now I am really listening to what you are saying and picking up the concepts and their technical definitions. You are one of those UA-camrs who actually know what they are talking about.
Don't regard everything Oliver says as correct, and don't regard everything Peterson says as correct. Oliver actually misunderstands some of Peterson's points Two examples: At 14:30 the argument is flawed. Oliver claims that the uniform of the police can be a symbol of chaos for many people, and although this is certainly true, his use of the word chaos has little to do with Peterson's use. 15 seconds before, he literally read his definitions of the abstract symbolisms of chaos and order, and it says that extreme order can become tyranny. That's what the uniform of the police can be, not chaos, especially not if you take into consideration Peterson's symbolic use of the word chaos. Also about the conflicting terms of post-mordenism and Marxism that Oliver says he uses interchangeably, this is not really the case. Firstly he never says Marxism, but neo-Marxism. He also says too that they are fundamentally contradicting terms. The communist manifesto and Marxism described history as a constant oppression from the economically powerful to the economically weak and he argues that people weren't buying that idea anymore from a point onwards, so the story changed to oppression of one identity group to another, in general. He basically hates the "identity politics" that "these people" play, and their focus on group identity over personal identity, which as far as I am concerned, is a very very valid point.
@@Pspet but I’m just wondering what he means by personal identity? When he is implying that order is tribe, religion, health, home, and country, I’m assuming that he is supporting order although it can be tyranny. But most of the things he said that are “order” can be seen as group identities, as the very nature of home, tribe, religion, and country is just very collective. Isn’t he contradicting himself?
@@Pspet, Peterson's fundamental problem is that his public persona is that of the self-important pseudo-intellectual prick, but he uses terms in an ambiguous, self-serving and *hypocritical* way. So, it's automatically worthy of hate if you use a term that is a de facto or de jure term imposed by society? A small number of people own the vast majority of human society's wealth. Is it bad to cite that group, that plutocracy, as a group, or is that bad form, and we really ought not make Peterson mad? He classifies while railing at the idea of classification. I'm no Marxist, but I have a basic grasp of the concept. Peterson seems not to, regardless of his bullshit "neo-marxism" term. I don't know whether he really doesn't, or he just says what he thinks is coherent with his overarching philosophies, or if he just serves up what he thinks will sell, or whether after so many years, he's come to believe his own nonsense. And he doesn't seem to have the slightest clue what "post-modernism" is. Does he have the slightest idea how badly he misunderstands? Does it even matter in the internet age? Ker-ching, man. Ker-ching. After listening to a number of Peterson's lectures, I don't feel the least bit edified -- at least, not from the lectures. This guy is a waste of time. You'd be far better served reading Nietzsche. Or a Timothy Snider book. Or even Toynbee. Or petting a cat.
@@Pspet Well, the first argument may sound flawed because he of the example. But because you haven't mentioned, I am led to believe that you think that he is correct about "Walls of the City". The argument holds up enough. Like he said, even Jordan Peterson has said that we see things in a subjective sense so two people can see the same things differently. So Order and Chaos, whether we like it or not, are relative.

Me, also! Props to Abigail for being snek-friendly and props to the snek wrangler. Most of all props to pwitty noodle for being the pwittiest whittle noodle ever ~
@Anti Cucho I think most people do not look for good things from UA-cam comments. The content is not like Olly's older videos, and I would not be surprised if those had a high proportion of comments "debating" the philosophy compared to this video having less of that and more talking about the acting and lighting and snakes and body hair. But look to ContraPoints for some nods at a rationale for intentionally causing this. From Olly's perspective, a video that is 95% philosophy monologue, 5% good film might not be as worthwhile as a video that entices people's aesthetic/sexual attentions and has a lot of researched philosophy in there as well. They accomplish different things and different people will watch them. Ultimately, this type of video is getting more popular, and I think that's a good thing because the other style of video, the more boring, less distracting exposition of philosophy is still not a dying breed and we can always go back to older ones of those; they don't get outdated very quickly. Engaging people's emotions and humor is intentional here, and it's okay not to like it.
Takeaways: •Peterson uses the postmodern method to criticize postmodernism. •A shirtless monologue on philosophy is possible. Felt like I should have gotten more out of this, but there was so much I couldn't synthesize it in one go.
@@iannichols3125 I do this, but not to try to change people (you can't really change others, just yourself). For example, if I'm talking about a monist or pantheistic idea with a Christian or an atheist, I'll use terminology they are more comfortable and familiar with. No amount of logic or argument will change an entrenched belief-in fact, good arguments make them dig their heels in harder-but you can introduce new ideas using their terminology. This gives them a way to wrap their head around the concept and makes it feel less like something "outside" or "other" and more like an extension of what they understand already. Give people a good model and a basic understanding and they might change themselves. But don't make it your goal.
@erni muja oops, I wasn't aware that I wasn't thinking. In future I'll try to remember to think... Which is to say, "think for fucks sake" isn't useful in getting people to think the way you do. It's more likely to alienate

Something I picked up on a review of "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" was a point on nihilism: If nothing matters, then everything matters. Olly looking at the camera dressed a shirtless demon, causally running a snake through his fingers, and saying in a deliberately deep voice "do you care more about meeting those expectations (voice lowers in pitch) ... or about looking good?" is my everything now.
A couple of years ago, I heard of a concept called "optimistic nihilism." In layman's terms, it means life is meaningless, and humanity's existence serves no greater purpose, so you might as well spend your life enjoying it and making the world a better place for others. That's basically how I operate.
I'm pretty sure this is the point of Nietzsche
There are several people that proclaim such an idea for different reasons: Nietsche, camus, sartre, stirner
Most of the millenial generation's ultimate philosophy is either naïve or aware optimistic nihilism.
This is also the xkcd approach
Well, there's still an ideology in there somewhere, isn't there? If you want to make the world a better place, that means that there is some target to work towards. So the question moves away from an existential problem to a social problem. What does the world look like that you want to leave behind? That's driven by ideology.

As a Peterson fan, a lobster, and an individual, I'd like to thank you for your insightful take on aspects of Peterson at which I have raised an eyebrow for a while.
Oliver actually misunderstands some of Peterson's points
Two examples:
At 14:30 the argument is flawed.
@@Johnny.Fedora "Or petting a cat" -- 🤣🤣🤣, indeed
@@Pspet Well, the first argument may sound flawed because he of the example. But because you haven't mentioned, I am led to believe that you think that he is correct about "Walls of the City". The argument holds up enough.
Like he said, even Jordan Peterson has said that we see things in a subjective sense so two people can see the same things differently.
So Order and Chaos, whether we like it or not, are relative.

@Anti Cucho We are embracing the Hedonism
You and Natalie are the etherial (over)theatrical parents of youtube and i LIVE for it
@itsinmyvein bruh the point was that the "over" theatrical part is what I love about them chill
Takeaways:
•Peterson uses the postmodern method to criticize postmodernism.
I realized shirtless philosophical monologues were possible when I saw drawings and statues of ancient Greek philosophers
@erni muja You might want to watch the show of Peterson`s only true fan. :D
@erni muja oops, I wasn't aware that I wasn't thinking. In future I'll try to remember to think...
Which is to say, "think for fucks sake" isn't useful in getting people to think the way you do. It's more likely to alienate
@erni muja power being A factor and power being THE ONLY factor are 2 different things. Sorry but you're not breaking any new ground here
It's almost like you can find your own meaning from life, and that it doesn't have to be what everyone else wants.

"The tree, the axis mundi, is without bark and leaves because has been [sic] mortally affected, as a consequence of the fall. Production of its first fruit - self-reference - placed it in shock, exhausted its resources. Its second fruit, associated with re-emergence into lush life and health, is the savior, the hero who redeems mankind from the consequences of the fall, the divine individual whose path of being leads back to paradise. This notion is represented imagistically (it has never really proceeded much past the image) in Figure 67: The Restitution of [Christ] the Mystic Apple to the Tree of Knowledge. "
Proceeds with a picture of Jezus nailed to a cross, with saints around him, adam and eve, and the tree of knowledge with - it's hard to make out but presumably - an apple.

Something I picked up on a review of "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once" was a point on nihilism: If nothing matters, then everything matters.
I think that's something JP is actively ignoring when he is (or was) preaching against nihilism. If life is inherently meaningless, then every moment is exactly as meaningful as the last.
How do you go from "nothing matters" to "everything matters". That's not good logic
@@TeaRiker yes it is.
