I have listened to SDSS1416+13B (Zercon, A Flagpole Sitter) on repeat for like two months. It was the only thing I could listen to which made my boyfriend crazy. He was the one going mad while I was singing along to "DID YOU EVERY THROW YOUR MOTHER'S OWN FOOD BACK AT HER!". I would even go to sleep listening to it, it's a song that is fascinating, beautiful, hysterical, sad, and existential. If I was a stripper, this would be the song I'd perform a private dance to.
So cool to see a Scott Walker tier list, you go over all the albums’ positives and negatives very well (Scott 3 is also my favorite of his solo albums). I got into him through David Bowie’s cover of Nite Flights and have been obsessed with his output (barring his wilderness years) ever since. I still think those first 4 songs on Nite Flights are truly the best thing he ever did, they were his biggest jump in quality from what came before, and established the perfect foundation for all his later masterpieces.
Thanks so much for listening! Nite Flights is groundbreaking for sure, especially considering what came before it. I especially love the track Nite Flights, reminds me of something that could’ve been on Climate of Hunter. If you like The Beach Boys and are interested, I did a tier list of them as well. The link is in the description
I love all the first 4 albums and everything from climate of hunter onward. I don't know how you managed to grade them. they are all perfect. Amazing music and one of my favorite artists. Just grabs and squeezes your heart.
Truly tastefully done, my good man. I’d been waiting for someone to tackle Scott, to the point where I almost did it myself, and my ranking would be very similar to yours. Nooo way one can keep The Trilogy off of S rank across the board. (Soused at a high A) Thank you for the excellent video! Far more in-depth on a per-song basis than most album ranking videos, high enthusiasm and energy, very enjoyable and made me want to listen to Scott rn. (i.e. Climate Of Hunter) “This is how you disappear…”
Thanks so much for listening man! I noticed there weren’t any videos going through Scott’s discography so i figured I might as well haha Climate of Hunter gets better every time I listen to it! Enjoy
Good list! Mine would go, from best to worst: 1. Scott 3 2. Scott 4 3. Scott 4. Scott 2 5. Tilt 6. Til The Band Comes In 7. Climate Of Hunter 8. The Drift 9. Scott Sings Songs From His TV Series 10. Bish Bosch 11. The Moviegoer 12. Stretch 13. We Had It All 14. Any Day Now I like them all but the top 10 I love. Also would put his songs from the Nite Flights album right up there.
Mike, I haven't commented on any of your videos before but rest assured I've watched pretty much all of them! I just wanted to say stumbling across your channel is genuinely akin to finding buried treasure - I cannot thank you enough for all the videos you've made. P.S - Are you gonna make more '5 [Composer] chord voicings on guitar' videos? - they're the best
Learned of Scott Walker hearing an NPR reflection of his passing 3+ yrs ago. I deep-dived and became a devotee. I peripherally knew "The Sun Ain't Gonna' Shine Anymore" as a teen in the late'60s - I assumed it was done by the Righteous Brothers! I agree with your overview/assessment for the most part, Scott 3 being at the top. A true artist in every sense of the word. Scott Walker is unique in the annuals of (all) music.
What a fantastic and helpful tier list. "I've always been a fan of dark and depressing music..." love it. Going to build my personal Scott collection based on your much appreciated candor and efforts here👍
I’ve just recently discovered Scott - so glad I stumbled across this video at this early stage. I’ve only listened to Scott 1, 2, and 3 so far, and am already obsessed. Can’t wait to get to the weird stuff, haha. Great job!
I like any day now, I don't know why they hate this album so much, I don't care about the opinion of the crowd that repeats and repeats contempt, I like this covers album, hearing Scott's voice in someone else's songs is fascinating, my favorite tracks They are Do I Love You, If, If Ships Were Made To Sail and Ain't No Sunshine, Ain't No Sunshine is the most beautiful version I've heard, it's the song with which I met Scott Walker, I love it
Really enjoyed this appraisal. Been a huge fan since early ‘80s. Searched the record shops and boot sales for the long-deleted albums and I bought Climate on the day it was released. Your placings very much echo my own. Scott 3 is the greatest though 30 Century Man is the odd man out. Anyway, Thank you and Happy Scott-mas!
I want to run with you into the winter sea with joy overflowing from where the waves breathe, to the endlessly distant horizon. I watch your video while looking at the winter sea. I was so moved by your video that I can't forget it even in my dreams, and happiness overflows. When I watch your video, everything feels like a dream. How did you do it so that you have such a wonderful talent that is full of strange charms unique to your video? I was amazed at the excellence of your skills and was moved by your sincerity and hard work while watching the video. I'm looking at your video like a dream. My eyes were moved by your image and fell in love. By chance, as the algorithm introduced me, when I opened my UA-cam window, the first video I saw was your video.
As I lived far away in Tasmania , Australia when I so eagerly awaited the release of "SCOTT 1 "...I became obsessed to a very large degree---it was an interior personal obsession, as nobody I came into contact with in my world knew who Scott was.....when he "disappeared " for many many years I kept on going......awaiting, listening for ANY news of him, and of any NEW ALBUM. "TILT " broke the drought, and on I went.....right to the end..."SOUSED " Now, with great satisfaction I can see around me " the world " has woken-up....a lot more people now dig Scott !!! Sadly he is no longer with us, but we have his output....his wonderful unique view of his art. You can't describe his essence.....the slim volume "SUNDOG " is far too slim...one aches for more of his late poetry. '
When The Walker Bros. played Japan in 1968 they included “The Lady came from Baltimore”, so Scott obviously liked the song quite a lot. I think it was meant as a break from the very dramatic tracks on Scott’s first LP. I think it works in that respect.
Mike went to highschool with you we werent friends or anything but i remember you always being into music and playing the guitar back then we graduated in 09 seymour high
Thanks for a very detailed review! I just needed the last part to help myself opening up to his ear-assaulting and mind-warping trilogy, what I, so far, could not... Let's see if I wiil survive, now! 🥴
Thank you! It’s certainly an acquired taste but it might grow on you eventually haha thanks for checking out all of the vids recently glad you’ve been enjoying them!
Would agree with almost all of this. I think you have it spot on with Scott 3 and 4 as the top tier early albums with the later avant garde albums just as good if not perhaps better but in an entirely different way. I am doing a listen a thon in order and agree with you about The Moviegoer in particular as very underrated. Tbh if I was Scott I would have put that and Any Day Now back out as they're slightly better than the next two (though I am very impressed with Scott tackling Use me on Stretch!)
There is a record available called Scott Walker live on air which covers all the songs he sang on his TV series. The sound quality could be better but I would highly recommend it.
I believe in inspiration for TIlt, Scott listened to Nine Inch Nails and got struck by it. Even by looking at the killer art. Just like how other older acts such as Killing Joke and David Bowie were inspired by Trent and the upcoming mainstream industrial scene into helping reinventing themselves for the better. Because I started with sunn o))) and Soused it wasn't until I went full circle and visited all of Scott's discography only to close it with Soused. It made more sense and was underrated. I ended up enjoying it more than the second and third parts of the trilogy.
I agree with (for the most part) your review of Scott’s work. Cool that you really like “Climate Of Hunter”, it’s probably my favorite, it should have been called “Scott 5” - but maybe that was too obvious.
@@robbiearroyo2292 I know what you mean, I see “Till the band comes in” as the epilogue to the ‘60’s era - the last time Scott would ever make an album that sounded like one of the “Scott” albums. I love the album myself and think that it’s very underrated - but “Scott 5” it is not, in my opinion.
@Edward mulholland that does make sense, I'd never really thought of it that way before. I suppose TTBCI is also a bit more American in its attitude and style. Much less of a European sound on that one. Probably my favorite Scott record if I had to pick because it's just so conceptual (well, minus the covers tacked on at the end).
@@robbiearroyo2292 I love “Till the band comes in” as much as S3 and S4 to be honest. Scott is truly transcendent the early albums are some of the most beautiful I have ever heard though don't agree with your rankings of songs on each album in general in full agreement but couldn't rank them lots of 12 out of 10 albums for me, then you get to those last 3 albums music from a different planet, the only comparison is another unique band Einstruzende Neubauten who are also challenging intense but capable of great beauty too, and oh if you are interested in a band using lydian rhythms have you ever heard of Cardiacs, Tim Smith is another musical genius

Probably not a popular choice amongst admirers of Walker's work but for me, "Tilt" is his greatest album.

This was an awesome listen. I agree with most of your thoughts and The Drift is one of the most frightening albums ever made.
Jesus christ. Finally, someone who gets it! These albums were perfectly ranked by your good self. Astute and dedicated listening my friend.
My top songs
1- aint no sunshine
2- the old mans back again
3- i still see you
4 - Rosemary

I love Scott. Incredible voice, but only a small section of his music does it for me, and most of that is with The Walker Brothers.

There is a record available called Scott Walker live on air which covers all the songs he sang on his TV series. The sound quality could be better but I would highly recommend it.
I felt the same with "Tilt" and Jeff Buckley, and I realized it has a lot to do with the solo part in Buckley's "So Real".
You're right about Thirtieth Century Man and it was actually replaced with "Lights of Cincinnati" for the American release

Just a personal opinion 😁

The Drift is his best IMO.
I agree, followed closely by Tilt. I'm still searching for the next The Drift....
You can find all the albums if you just put the title in and then enter blogspot after. I have all these albums on vinyl

Did you hear the cover of "Rosemary" by Jan Linton, reviewed by Postpunk Monk? No one is as good a singer as Scott but this probably is the closest
30th Century Man is a stellar song. Ended up in a Wes Anderson movie. Case closed.
Scott 4 is his best IMO.
Bish Bosch felt a bit rushed to me.
No soused?
"Soused"; AKA "Scott Free".
scott 1 should be s tier
Sleepwalkers woman doesn't eveeget a mention.
I try to mention as much stuff as I can but every once in a while sometning slips through the cracks, my apologies. Thank you for listening regardless
The first half of Til The Band Comes In is brilliant. The covers are letdowns.
Nice video. (By the way you don't resonate -- the music resonates with you (or doesn't)).
