- I have really wanted to do a video on Scott Walker for a while. He singing and Jacques Brel's songwriting is so inspiring to me. This is the type of lyricism really gets me going and it's something I personally find missing in a lot of music out these days. I hope you enjoy the work of Scott Walker & Jacques Brel after watching this. Here is a link to the playlist: open.spotify.com/playlist/695...

I can grow a moustache in 4 days 🤥
😂😂😂
Would love to see a video dedicated to Jacque Dutronc!
I can’t grow one in 60 years..
Fertiliser? 😁
@@ThatGuyThanus me neither…. I hope! 😬😂
Julian Cope actually helped fuel the post-punk interest in Scott's music. Cope put together a compilation album called "Fire Escape in the Sky: The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker", which consisted of tracks from Scott's albums between 1967-1970 and only songs that Scott had written himself. It was released in 1981 and Cope himself said he did it because he wanted a new audience to discover Scott's music.
I have a very precious copy. Incredible artist
Julian later disowned Scott Walker! He mentions it in one of his books. Traitor.
I didn't know that. Cope to the rescue for SW
Scott Walker was such a fearless boundary pushing artist. To go from making exquisite chanson chamber pop music in the late 60s to making avant-garde, experimental music in his later years while maintaining his full artistic vision is incredibly inspiring to me. And my God that voice! 😍
Precisely. 👌
Some of his last songs are absolutely hair raising.
I remember thinking Tilt was difficult. Revisiting it after Bish Bosh and it sounds quite poppy! Really love Tilt now.
🤠'hoik💨put' ding🎵
@@peakproofuk Tilt is easy listening compared to Bish Bosh. Love both of them.
Scott Walker was a genius beyond belief. So sad when he passed. Scott 4 is one of the best albums of the last century.
I remember being seriously ill in hospital and Scott 4 getting me through the worst of those times. Even now the quality of that album astounds me.
Of any century.
I’ve always said Duchess is my favourite song. Just perfection.
@@peakproofuk Ah, it really is.
I love it too but I prefer 'Til the Band Comes In', 'Scott 3' and a rearranged 'Scott 2' (minus 'Come Next Spring' & 'Wait Until Dark' and with 'The Plague' added).
One shouldn't lose sight of the fact that this translation of Brel's lyric was penned by Mort Shuman, who'd made his name co-writing Brill Building pop classics such a Save the Last Dance for Me and Hushabye and Elvis hits like His Latest Flame, Little Sister and Viva Las Vegas. Then Mort fell in love with Brel's music and moved to Europe and had a singing career there... in French, no less. And Brel was Belgian, for what it's worth (and it's worth plenty).
That doc. 30th Century Man about Walker's life and music is just astounding. I knew nothing about him until I saw it, and when I realized I was old enough that I could have had several decades of absorbing his music I pretty much kicked myself in the ass for having missed out. He really deserves wider acclaim. A unique and emotionally moving artist. Thank you for this little look at him!
Same! 😎
I'm now in my 70s and have adored Scott since my teens. Firstly, in the Walker Brothers - that beautiful baritone voice has always been THE voice for me. Of course, I have all his earlier albums on vinyl and Justin, if you like his version of Jacques Brel's 'Next', then you must also love 'Jackie'. Scott was unique and irreplaceable. RIP Scott 😢
I adore Scott Walker. His early stuff was amazing, but I really love his later, avant garde music. There's really nothing like it, by anybody.
I love Bish Bosch.
I've always said that Tilt, The Drift and Bish Bosch is one of the best album runs in music. His fierce creativity to make such unique records is something else.
@Eddie Viv Bish Bosch is my favourite album. It's stunning.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band did this song on the Old Grey Whistle Test in about 1973. Blew me away Sensational rendition worth checking out!
It's great. I didn't know Scott Walker did this. Off to check it out. 'Framed' by the SAHB is great too. I wonder if he influenced Bon Scott or vice versa.
I never knew Scott walker did it either😮 I loved SAHB
Still prefer Alex Harvey version sorry Justin
Yep, Alex Harvey’s version will always be my favourite
Not a patch on the SAHB version
Nite Flights is still one of the most incredibly produced and ahead of it‘s time record of all time
Great use of The Electrician in the film Bronson.
It's a pop crime how until this day Scott's work on Nite Flights has been vastly overlooked. Nothing can prepare you for those 4 songs.
Always say to my friends it's the greatest post-punk album of all time 😀
@@user-almasy it would be definitely the greatest post punk album if all the songs were written by Scott, in my opinion. Gary and John were artistically many light years behind Scott.
The Scott part of the record, yes
I adore Scott Walker. My late father was a huge fan and passed his Scott Walker vinyl on to me. Scott sang those Brel songs like a Greek god. Bowie was hugely influenced by Scott of course…thanks so much for discussing this genius Justin.
Check out "David Bowie - Birthday wish from Scott Walker" on UA-cam. Bowie is being interviewed on the radio and the presenter has a secret taped birthday message from Scott Walker. There's a chunk of dead air where David Bowie is, quite literally, speechless.
Jacques Brel is a Monument for all french people loving lyrical, romantic, splendid songs. I'm french Canadian and this guy is my brothers favorite «french» speaking song writter ! Go for it !
The Old Man's Back Again....amazing Scott Walker song. He's out of this world.
That bass line is outrageous.
LOVE that song so much!
The bass line feels like someone rummaging around in a deep bag trying to find something but never quite finding it. I absolutely love it.
Yup and the scat at the end kills it.
Absolutely!
Scott Walker was a great songwriter in his own right. Maybe not as iconic and poetic as Brel or Gainsbourg, but songs such as 'Rosemary' and 'Orpheus' are absolutely brilliant. Rest in peace, you beautiful tormented soul.
He was more poetic than either Brel or Gainsbourg
@@andyisdead alright. I respect your opinion. After all, I think we can all agree here we love Scott Walker and his amazing talent.
@@brunokubin I prefer Walker over Brel and Gainsbourg by a very small margin but I do agree with you that he wasn't _quite_ as poetic as the Belgian and the Russian.
Scott Walker was a life changer for me. I discovered his music backwards, I listened to his later albums and then went back to listen to those first four albums.
I listen to Scott’s music every single day, good to hear you like Scott. Arlene xxxxxx
Didn't he sing "The sun ain't gonna shine anymore" I absolutely love that song, loneliness is the cloak that you wear, a deeper shade of blue,is always there " what a line
Yes he did, when he was part of The Walker Brothers….
I've never heard of this guy before. It's pretty great music.
What a refreshing bloody UA-cam channel. Scott is my hero. ❤
Scott was a genius. I never get tired of his songs. Thanks for this video ❤
The Naked and the Dead is a novel by Norman Mailer. Published 1948 about soldiers in WW2
Scott Walker was/is great. Leos Carax’ use of his music in POLA X (also in a short) was truly killer!
I was a teen hearing "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker Brothers (I thought it was done by the Righteous Brothers) and liking it then but had no idea who Scott Walker was. It wasn't until he passed away not that long ago that I 'discovered' him. Since then, he has become my favorite male singer and musical artist. I consider those 4 albums "Classical Pop", my favorite being Scott 3. (and I've learned I am not alone!) Long live Scott Walker -
I first heard this song on the old grey whistle test when The Sensational Alex Harvey Band did it. I was 12 and when I heard the lyrics I was grateful my parents hadn't stayed up. A brilliant version by the way, sung in Alex's angry Glasgow accent!
The Last Shadow Puppets did this in 2008, "The Age of the Understatement". very VERY Scott Walker inspired record, check it out! Nice one Justin, love the Darkness and enjoy the tone of the channel a lot!
I love that album! Haven’t listened to it in ages, thanks for reminding me! 🥰🙏🏻
@@NinStardust also check out their second album, Everything You've Come To Expect
@@SomeClassyToast great record sure! I'd say less scott walkerish but amazing songwriting there too :)
On a similar note the new Arctic Monkeys album has some great Scott Walker-esque moments on there too!
Scott had it all - an insanely beautiful voice, ability to write clever/emotive lyrics and a truly enigmatic persona. Justin, in answer to our question - no one in this day and age is (or could) write music as good as Scott’s.
got introduced to scott through my fondness for pulp. "the amorous humphrey plugg" is hands down one of my fave all-time tracks.
Today on my market stall I sold a reissue of the Moviegoer album. His later works went towards avant garde and even before he passed jazz. RIP Scott Thanks for seventh seal song.
That was such a lovely and thoughtful appreciation of Scott, Justin. Scott's music deserves all the love in the world. I really appreciate how sincere and heartfelt this commentary was, and how insightful.
As a huge Suede fan, Scott Walker is obviously an influence on Brett's lyrics and vocals. Tilt by Walker is difficult listening but give it few spins, masterpiece.
if tilt is difficult, you should probably not look into the drift and bish bosch
@@balarka3885 or Soused.
I'm still not comfortable with Bish Bosch, but I love Soused.
The Divine Comedy/Neil Hannon is heavily influenced by both Scott and Brel. The albums Casanova, A Short Album About Love, and Fin De Siècle have some great songs with similar dark and over-the-top humor in the lyrics.
Don’t forget Absent Friends!
Absolutely Mr Hannon is an amazingly talented fella staggeringly underrated
@@mhbackman yeah probably the best
Love the Divine Comedy. So many great songs.
"through a long and sleepless night" off casanova forever solidifies his reputation as walker's heir apparent in my book. thick, meandering decadence distilled perfectly in six minutes.
Love "it's raining today" also the brothers "the electrician", just lovely pieces
Funeral Tango was my introduction to Scott Walker's solo records. My parents were big Walker Brothers fans in the 60's. My family is from Southern Ohio, where Scott Walker grew up too. He is so unique. His dive into the avant garde is such a huge departure from what he was initially famous for, and it's great that he was so willing to take those risks to be the artist he wanted to be. Could you imagine if he had those leanings earlier on?
i'm a huge Brel fan, i didn't know anyone had done his work in english. thanks justin
David Bowie did a great live English version of My Death in a Ziggy Stardust concert video. He, too, admired Brel's work. It's an easy search to find here on UA-cam if you're interested.
Scott did quite a few of them as Justin said. And his original material is great too! Check out those first four Scott solo albums at the very least.
Absolutely love Scott Walker and somehow never realized until this vid that the "naked and the dead" line got sampled in some techno I listened to in my formative years
Nick Cave comes to mind. Quite sure he covered Brel at some point .... right up his alley :)
a LOT of fucking love for you putting scott walker content up. really very, very pleased by it.
I'd never heard of Scott Walker until I watched the BBC proms celebration of his life back in 2017. Two of my favourite artists, Susanne Sundfor and John Grant (pleeease cover them both on the channel) performed covers. Absolutely magical!
Justin, you are doing a great service by introducing me to all this new old music. Thank you and hope you enjoy what you do. Love and good wishes to you. 🤩
Yep, totally agree that AMs new album is very Scott Walkeresque. Nick Cave’s lyrics could also be considered Walkeresque. I love the surreal lyrics of Jubilee Street and the more specific and hugely entertaining lyrics of No Pussy Blues by Grinderman. In fact I do declare the man is a genius! Great video Justin x 👏
Agree with every word.
Yup, I love Love you Till the End of the world.
Good soundtrack.
Yes, when I first heard this Scott Walker track, Nick Cave's song "The Carny" came to mind.
So now I know where Orbital's "The Naked And The Dead", an early b-side, took its name and vocal sample from. Thank you.
My Dad is responsible for getting me into him. He had got the CD of 'Scott 3' in 2006, and as soon as I heard 'It's Raining Today', I knew this was someone I had to look into more of.
I adore Scott’s body of work. My vinyl collection has more Scott’s material than any other artist. RIP this unbelievable legend. Would love to see you comment on some of his later work. Thanks for highlighting his work here, Justin.
I also really love Brel’s work. Unfortunately he died too young.
What I love most about the first four Scott Walker albums is the musical world he created with the orchestrations. I really do feel as if I’m entering a landscape of his own design. They are some of the greatest records of the era. Whenever I play them I feel I never have to play a rock record ever again (then I do of course).
So many great British artists cite Scott Walker as their inspiration, but Scott is hardly known to most Americans. He seems to have more lasting fame abroad.
I actually had to look up Scott Walker because I had never really heard of him . The funnier part is I live where he was born in Hamilton Ohio USA.
I grow up with Jacques Brel music, I m French...When he was performing, he used to put his soul, his body, all his energy in the songs ! Incredible ! I like everything wich is related to Rock music, I m a Metalhead and I have so much respect for Jacques Brel ! Le grand Jacques ! Chuck Berry or Craddle of filth, The Doors or Metallica, it's the same for me, Rock music and somehow Jaques Brel had something Rock
Fellow francophone here! And yeah, I think it is fair to say that Brel had this "rock" quality in the sens that he sang songs for the sole purpose of "shaking" or "rocking" his audience if you will. He just had a much more eloquent way of delivering that sort of feeling. Because if you look at Amsterdam or even Les Remparts de Varsovie, you could very well picture those kinds of lyrics in a metal song, it's just that Brel's mastery of the french language has yet to be matched in that genre.
LOVE Scott Walker! 30th Century Man. Farmer In The City. It's Raining Today. He's in another realm.
THANK YOU for talking about this genius and thank you youtube for putting it in my recommended!!
As a 10 year old plooky youth I was allowed to stay up and watch TOGWT with whispering Bob and I was traumatised hearing the fabulous Alex Harvey band perform Next. I'd never seen or heard anything like it and I loved it.
Yep, all day long. I'm heading straight for Montague Terrace in blue, then Boychild. Sublime
In my opinion, this is a very good Jacques Brel cover which I've never heard before. It's good to see great artists like you mentioning great artists like Brel (and Walker). You made me discover Scott Walker (what a beautiful voice), a new discography to explore for me. Thanks Justin.
Interesting as always, Justin. Mort Shuman was a friend of mine through SODS (Society of Distinguished Songwriters). Mort is- by name and nature, now dead. But he was co-lyricist of "Next". Also wrote Loads of standards of rock n roll with Doc Shuman. (Save The Last Dance For `me etc) M 🙂
Scott Walker was awesome and his music lives on! RIP
Hi Justin, just wanna say thanks for all the awesome and entertaining content. I've been going through a bit of a rough patch recently, and your videos have helped me out beyond belief. You're a legend. Never stop ❤🤟
Thanks for introducing me to Scott Walker. I have the day off so I’ll spend some time listening to your playlist.
Amazing you are covering Scott, I've loved him since I was 17 and I'm now 54.
Scott 4 on vinyl…headphones…Gote Mobler recliner…cognac…HEAVEN
The more people that get Walker in their ear holes the better - Thank you sir!
Thanks! I have so enjoyed your channel since I discovered it a month or so ago. Keep showing us the gems that you continue to uncover!
Thanks so much Jarrod!
bless you for choosing this ...that voice is amazing , his control of vibrato, his beautiful rich baratone, his pitch perfect tonality and his phrasing of touching lyrics and yes this caliber of song writing is very rare. I would hug you but you live in Switzerland and I live in Norfolk, no ones arms are that long, this choice has made my day. wonderful.
With every video posted on this channel, my respect for you and your taste in music grows exponentially. I’m genuinely not trying to blow smoke up your arse here, but I’m deeply pleased at how articulate and cogent your views and thoughts are. Lovely work by you and your team.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band did a great version of this track if I’m not mistaken, which is where I heard it
"The Naked And The Dead" is a reference to the novel of the same name by Norman Mailer
Thank you so much for doing a video about Scott! Would it be presumptive to request a part II with his harrowing later works? The amazing, albeit sometimes terrifying and shocking songwriting excellence continues but becomes enhanced by the scariest and bleakest sound textures ever. I know it'll probably be a quasi unpleasant experience to subject yourself to all of those works en masse but I would love to hear your take on it!
Thank you for doing a video about a totally under appreciated and mostly ignored artist. Please do a more expanded video about him with maybe a few examples from the various stages of his career ? Jacques Brel was pretty fabulous too. The other great component of this was Brooklyn born Mort Shuman who wrote and sang songs in English and French, translated / adapted / collaborated with Brel on " Next, " Jackie" , "Mathilde" " My Death " and others.
A total genius. His sixties stuff is amazing. The experimental stuff that comes later is also amazing. The Walker Brothers are mostly amazing and The Drift is the scariest album ever recorded.
Yes!! I LOVE SCOTT WALKER!
Those first four albums are outstanding and of course no one could sing like Scott.
Black Country New Road are incredible. SCOTT WALKER certainly an influence!
Quite literally - 'I'm modern Scott Walker' sung by Isaac Wood in Sunglasses.
Hi Justin, I had the good fortune of seeing you live in the summer, I thought you were great, a cross between Freddie Mercury & Prince on a class A... Really enjoyed it.
I have a friend called Russel Middleton who is the best unknown singer songwriter who exists today. He's written so many good songs that I hope one day will be heard.. Regards Paul.
ERE HAWKINS. . . you should listen to A Grand Don't Come For Free by The Streets.
but from the begining, i listend to it a lot over the years, it's a nice little story that has a nice wrap up in the end.
better than just listening to the single tracks, which seem random without the context of the full album.
Hope you do give it a listen and enjoy it , especially if you like a story in your music.
Lots of focus on Scott lately.
Pleased to see it , accolades over-due
Well deserved 👏 🙌
Long time admirer of Jaques as well.
Ty for featuring!
I am of the generation who loved Scott Walker and his work. Glad you have discovered him Justin. Love my evenings listening to you.
Just my favourite thing on the internet to listen to . Keep it up
Incredible lyrics, thanks for the intro Justin.
The Walker Brothers did a fantastic version of My Ship is Coming In.
Scott's first four solo albums from the 60s are genius and timeless brilliance. So influential on the future of music
Love this. Scott is one of my my favourite singers. Took my years to find his LPs. Then in the 90s found them all ion HMV. Really appreciate this! 😊❤️
Thanks for introducing me to Scott Walker. I only knew the Gavin Friday & The Man Seezer version of Next.
I love Scott Walker. My favourite song by him is Copenhagen.
An absolute beauty.
Benjamin Clementine has been influenced by the French "chanson", mostly Leo Ferre, and he is a brilliant songwriter. Nick Cave is a great storyteller, much like Brel. Tom Waits as well. I must add Sixto Rodriguez and Paolo Nutini. Great video, as always. Cheers!
Yes, I love Benjamin Clementine. Nick Cave and Tom Waits are also two of my favorite artists. So these are great artists to recommend.
Ah, good call! Yes, you can hear traces of Brel in Clementine, along with traces of Nina Simone.
A massive talent. Don't know of many people who could create a song like 'Big Louise'. His whole cannon is spectacular and he should be right up there with the greats. He lived and worked on his own terms, from peerless alt pop, through to the densest and darkest electronica. Such people are frequently way ahead of the curve and get overlooked or just forgotten. One day the world may catch up!
Scott Walter was a remarkable artist and your reverence here is justified. I think that whilst very different in style, the song writing of Mark Lanegan deserves to be spoken of in similar tones. Nobody told stories of despair quite like him. Nobody evoked bleakness in quite the same way. I mourn his passing every day.
Scott Walker 4 is such an amazing album!!! Very cool you did a video on him Justin! Also liked the one you did on the VERVE!!!!
Best review so far! You're right about Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner makes a good effort at bringing legendary style to the young ones.
Just got to your page and straight away saw your comment, proudly declaring that you can swiftly grow a mustache. Well done sir. A fine mustache is er like a fine um wine?
Sorry if this has been mentioned before : the original song title is "Au suivant", 1963. Love to hear from you about Jacque Brel. As a french man, loving Jacque Brel, I think that Jarvis Cocker does a same job, the way he is cruel to him and to the world in lots of his songs. Love and everything.
Wally Stott/Angela Morley is the rarely mentioned hero of many a Scott triumph.
Thxs again for riding again
From Prescott AZ
A great video and a great ending theme!
I watched The Sensational Alex Harvey Band live in Manchester play this song back in the seventies. Great song, great band, bought the album after the gig:0)
To me the song is about the complete insanity of war. I live in Brel’s childhood street by the way. Still waiting for similar greatness to hit me. Au suivant!
He has ridden , big respect to you Justin ! Love this channel as a fan of yours for some time . Hope to possibly see you in Ireland someday ?
walker was a genius. incredible songs....
you should check out richard dawson
My gig of the year was watching Richard Dawson and Circle... Absolutely nuts
This sounds like the type of sleazy drama Pulp were looking to evoke in This Is Hardcore
Recently watched Scott Walker, 31st Century Man. Definitely worth a squiz
I’ve listened to Scott 1/2/3/4 like that SO many times. I love the earlier work with Brel in but 4 was all Scott and my favourite. Thanks for the next chat.
Wow I love Scott Walker. I was just listening to his music this morning.
So great. Love Scott.
This song is super heavy. Thanks for sharing it!
