tommy bolin is the man. He is my idol. i Just got into his music about a couple of weeks ago. Listening to him totally gives me a new perspective on music. R.I.P tommy. Your the greatest.

If this was the Santa Monica show, it was Bolin's last with Zephyr, who were opening for Mountain. I was there and it was an incredible experience. The whole band was on fire, and it was a classic performance by Tommy.
@JohnnyVisionquest @jonsilence This dude blows me away every time i hear something new by him. Seeing him do it, well hats off to who ever filmed this, and saving it . Shame its so grainee but wow. Thanks for posting.
This kind of guitar playing reminds me of Alvin Lee back in Woodstock 69, I'll be damned but back then there was'nt to much guitar effects but it does sounds cool.
These old tape delays were a blast to play with. Bolin has really done some masterful work with one in the performance. I have a few old Echoplexes and Roland Space Echoes. This is a killer solo. You did not have tap tempo back then, and really had to be one with the guitar, machines, and equipment to pull this type of thing off. Tommy was so brilliant. Todays stuff is pretty lame in comparison. Now the equipment is so much improved, but the artisanship is kinda gone.
Tommy Was so good, his playing was so different than everyone else. He had such a great tone and style. Wish he would have stuck around so I could have seen him play.
Someone who keeps track of stuff like that told me Zephyr possibly played Santa Monica on two different occasions. There is some discrepancy with dates but it could also be just a mislabeled tape. I really don't know if this is from the final show or not. There is a recording circulating labeled 8-11-70 Santa Monica, while I think the final show was in March of 71. This solo is different than the show labeled 8-11-70, so it might be the last Zephyr show, but I do not know.
The tape I have marked 8/11/70 came from a guy named Sam Romanghi in Arizona. My copy is the one generally circulated,AFAIK. You're right, this isn't the solo from that gig. And they opened for Mountain on said tape, as I have the start of that performance with intro. The real date?
If this is the Santa Monica Civic it must be the August 1970 show with Mountain, which I saw. As good as it gets, both bands were on fire and Zephyr ripped it up. Tommy was playing his gold top Les Paul as seen here.
@70drok Some promoters were not very kind to people with any kind of recording device at a live show back in these days. The bands and record execs were against it for piracy/copyright reasons. A lot of great stuff went unrecorded. The Dead was pro live show recording, and would help some of the more sophisticated guys set up. They were the exception to the rule. This is grainy, but sounds great compared to some of the bootleg stuff I have heard. It is the sound that is most important to me.
Eddie Van Halen obviously listened to and loved Tommy. If you need further proof than this, listen to quadrant 4 by billy cobham with Tommy on guitar. Then go listen to hot for teacher. The drums and guitar sound reminiscent
+phoatoh joe There is an early bootleg, Gazzari's Dance Party where Van Halen covers a Tommy Bolin song, The Grind. They also covered James Gang and Deep Purple songs, two bands Bolin played with briefly.

Looking forward to May 27!
Thanks so much for posting this video. Tommy was a guitar god, gone way to soon. Thanks Tommy.
Thank you, Tommy.
Amazing.

He was no more than 20 years old here. Pretty creative playing here. Awesome.

Tommy loved the Echoplex. I had one and I loved mine! Nothing sounded cooler!
This looks like Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Tommy's still playing his Les Paul, right before it was stolen.
glad i found this . wish there was more info.
Great great Tommy !!!!!!!!!!!!
way cool! I saw Zephyr more than a few times in Colorado, a great band, they cooked!
Zephyr and Bolin were lightyears ahead of the pack.

Cell phone cameras have come a long way.

that was very very cool! and so is Tommy forever.
also nice spot work, one on left hand, one on right at times.
You have to take in to consideration It's the late 60's or early 70's. Trippiness was all the rage and Delay effects were new for guitarist.
Great post!
The song is "Hard Chargin' Woman" from the 1st album. Listen to the last few seconds of audio.....
Guitar genius tommy
this kind of echoplex crazyness reminds me of John Martyn, who was also using those machines brilliantly
if only he had done that in Deep Purple.
Good Work Peter-thanks for posting
His health was very deteriorated by then. He had a stroke, and Deep Purple just covered or him on stage in the end.
No,he didn't have a stroke. And he wasn't in that bad of shape for most of Purple. Stories of his "problems" on that tour were way overblown.
