My first time to see Zephyr was at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, CA in 1971. Zephyr played first, followed by Humble Pie, Mountain and Fleetwood Mac.
Aw this brings back memories. I was just a kid, but saw Zephyr and Candy and Tommy more than once. A couple times at Mammoth, also a benefit show they did. They did good stuff after Tommy, too. Still have my Sunset Ride on vinyl.
I saw these guys playin on the streets in downtown denver in front of may D & F department store around 67 or so, Tommy was such a great guitarist and the chic singin with him (sorry cant remeber her name) had a perfect voice for this band, saw them many times later as they got more famous, including up at Boulder on the campus where they would play for free along w/ Mountain
starfisher87 / that wzs a cool day..i think Blues Image was there also. leslie West was the happiest looking person that I had ever seen, behind the stage, sitting on a speakercab, suede bell bottoms and a long fringed vest. He looked joyous.
I happened to listen to the song Stratus (from Billy Cobham's album Spectrum) and realized that I knew nothing about Tommy Bolin before his sadly premature death. I looked around on youtube, saw the cover for the first Zephyr album and flashed back 45 years to when I saw that album in my local record store. Damn, I shoulda bought it! All these years later I hear Zephyr for the 1st time and oh my god. Had no idea what kind of band I had missed. I'm listening to St. James Infirmary, really diggin' Bolin's bluesy guitar work, as well as an exceptional band behind him. Then I hear this incredible female voice, bluesy & powerful like JJ but with a little more restraint and I'm into that, too, big time. Song ends. I click on Going Back to Colorado next. A little different, still good, then at 1:23 Candy rips into a harp ride that kills, technique AND emotion far beyond her age or experience! So I get excited that, holy crap, here are artists, early on, who had a real gift. I already knew that Tommy had passed, but I'm hoping for a body of work from the other members. Finding music that I never knew existed, with the potential these guys were showing - to me, that is a thrill far beyond the slick, marketing oriented direction that music is subjected to today. So I read comments and find out that Candy is also gone, a few years after Tommy. And John Faris after Candy! I stopped searching. It doesn't seem right that I just found this band only to have so much potential snatched right back. I guess I'm not surprised, I just wish for once that the gods of rock&roll would get their shit together.
I used to have this record. Before I knew what it really was I'd fallen in love with the title track, and then it was stolen by an unscrupulous roommate who knew something about record collecting. Always loved the record cover, too. Thanks for posting this, and the great memories you've brought back by doing so!
@starfisher87 ...the female singer is candy givens wife to david givens (bass player).. they would play in boulder as the "etheral zephyer", you are so right about bolin and his playing. what a lost to us all when he died.
I was at the Boulder campus too! Quit my job when I heard about the show and went to it. I ended up getting past the Feyline bouncers after promising not to do anything stupid. Watch the show from the side of the stage. Go to Sweet Lunacy: Boulder Rocks UA-cam channel for a walk down memory lane.
@starfisher87 i remember humping speakers and drum kits for the group at tulagis and lean'n tower of pizza the bar manager would give us a beer and the band, a joint.
@metallooney Miss Libertine begins at about 4:15 or so, the same stuff that is going on now was going on then, the elite tried and failed back then, but they learned and improved themselves and are trying it again. Back then we beat them with the media and through politics, this time we don't have the media on our side, that's one of the things they learned, so we need to figure out who to vote for and get them in office ASAP, before the big 'National Emergency' and the implementation of NSPD51
