this is ENERGY , when We played at the Roof Top Ballroom , Sioux City, Iowa -- 1972 -- this is the place where I first heard TOMMY { 1965-66 ish } with the Patch of Blue --- He did a solo in " It's not Unusual " that blew Me away ! -- He must have been 14 -15 yrs. old
A night where you and Tommy just blew the Roof off the place, and launched us into space. He was playing beyond that night, from Strat to pedal steel, echoplex warping all to where everyone was sailing among the stars......
For many years, well before Tommy's untimely and sad passing, my younger brother and I - I'm 67, he 63 - have maintained that IF Tommy had lived just a few years longer it would be HE that would be idolised as the guitar leader of a generation and not Jimi. Nothing I have heard in this quite extraordinary piece that I hadn't heard of, let alone heard, until I started posting this comment. Quite QUITE MAGNIFICENT. Greetings from this Englishman Londoner.
This is indeed a rare treat. You can tell he lacks confidence in his singing but that would develop tremendously in time and of course his playing is incendiary as always! Thanks for posting!
tell me more about this movie on TB's time with deep purple, I want to see it. I've been a fan since 8/29/1976 Unknowingly went to a concert at mile high stadium to see peter framton, steve miller, and gary wright thinking this no name back up band called tommy Bolin,, needless to say Bolin stole the show. I left the concert wanting to buy any and all Bolin material.that I could get my hands on, and nearly 40 years later his music is as powerful as it was on 8/29/1976 RIP TOMMY BOLIN
There is footage of the Tommy Bolin Band at Mile High Stadium on this channel, check it out. You might see yourself, because the cameraman focused on the audience a lot. The audio is not from that show, unfortunately, but it lines up fairly well anyway, same lineup from a different show.
Unfortunately, Tommy died before his talents were recognized and rewarded. He would have been a superstar by '78 (with a mansion in the Colorado mountains). The TBB opened for PF a few times in '76 on the Frampton Comes Alive tour. Frampton played 158 shows in '76. He got a one month break and had to back on tour for another 160 shows in '77. He was tired and sick of playing the same songs but, back then, the record companies controlled the musicians.
Tommy is Criminally Underrated as singer and as producer...yes, just not as guitar player...what he did on 'teaser' album as producer is fantastic....and his voice was so warm, cool and extremely loveble...
Great band that the record execs missed out on as they were too ignorant and short sighted. Thank you Tommy, Stanley, Tommy, and Bobby. You are not forgotten!
@ez1dog2 Yes, it's available on itunes and yahoomusic and probably other sites of that nature. It's from a CD released by TB Archives called Tommy Bolin & Energy Live which might turn up on eBay or Amazon if you look around. Highly recommended and some of Tommy's wildest guitar playing.
What's the name of this or was it just a jam? You say it was released with the James Gang? What song is it called in that incarnation with them, please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?????????? :)
Nevermind.....was reading the title wrong.....I see it's Red Skies. Thanks for the song!! Incredible this guitar riff has just been sitting buried....up there with some of the best guitar riffs ever.
I wish everyone knew Tommy. Damn sad deal, but if you can pal around musically with Jeff Beck, you've accomplished something. Really wish they would have had time to start a band.

Tommy was lightyears ahead of his time.Tommy was and will always be my favorite.

I sat 2 feet from Tommy at the Draft House in Denver in 73 great guitarist !
How was the show
That must have been something!
Lucky you!! 😮
TB, quite possibly the most important American guitarist after JH! It’s criminal that many have never even heard of him!
OMG Tommy!!! Words can not do justice to that stunning guitar work - particularly from about the 4:00 - 5:30 minute mark.
Absolutely incredible!!!!

Help Help...my face...it's melting ...melting...melting
The best guitarist absolutely.
What a great " Praylude" to the James Gang version. Thee end reminds me of Jimi . Thank you .
This is the best Tommy Bolin guitar solo I have ever heard. Anyone know of one better?
Better I don't know but I love the solo on Alexis
the best Tommy i love this guy
Awesome!
Bolin Rules !
Rest In Peace Great Tommy !
God Bless Your Soul !
Wow this is a rare treat! I wish Tommy would have put that solo on the James Gang version. He's got the fire on this one, for sure!
Almost sounds like the riff in Dealer when he was in Purple. I guess it was one of his favourite riffs he wanted to get heard by a bigger audience.

Glad I landed here

The best guitar God 🙌
The influence from Hendrix is obvious. Excellent!!!
That 3:50 to 4:00 minute mark is a must listen. Wow, absolutely incredible!
Thank you all for your very kind words.............I know Tommy would be very pleased as well. Wanna bet the "Bolinbabe"is at least 300 pounds?

check that I meant until about 5:30 mark. Tommy's got the fire on this one for sure!
@IansWatch That's the direction i think Tommy would have went kinda like Santana/Jeff Beck, like on" Stratus".
Yeah mine too, and Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin - in this order
What's the name of this or was it just a jam? You say it was released with the James Gang? What song is it called in that incarnation with them, please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?????????? :)

can this version be found anywhere?
Wow ,cool voice. Sounds better than on Teaser or Private Eyes. Only it's too quiet in this recording.
