Faded Satin Lady is a song from the 1979 album "Whistling In The Dark" by Max Gronenthal (AKA Max Carl.) It was co written by Max G with Tommy Bolin. Though the album was recorded after Bolin's untimely death in late 1976, the slide guitar on the song (probably played by Mike O'Neill or Will McFarlane) is reminiscent of Bolin's style, suggesting that Max G and Bolin possibly made a demo of the song, and some effort was made to honor Tommy Bolin by using some of his slide licks when another guitarist recorded the studio version. Or, O'Neill may have just known Tommy's style well enough to conjure up a bit of Tommy's mojo since Tommy co wrote the song. Some of the players on this album were associated with Tim Goodman, who made some unreleased demos featuring Tommy Bolin, before he went on to great success with Southern Pacific. Max Gronenthal was briefly a member of Tommy Bolin's band Energy in the early 70s shortly before they dissolved due to most of the members being hired to record and tour with other very successful artists of the day. Later, he was also in the final lineup of the Tommy Bolin Band.
This channel is intended to feature the lesser known of Tommy Bolin's officially released recordings, along with some unreleased tracks which fill in gaps in the history and legacy of this remarkably versatile and underrated musician. Although Tommy Bolin is only credited as co author of the song, and does not play on the recording, it is still an obscure but musically inspiring part of his legacy that many of his fans have never heard.
