- This week we got the news that amazon games has a new lord of the rings mmo in development, this is great news for all mmos fans, but especially good for those waiting for the last LOTR MMO that never released.

I wonder if it'll essentially be a LOTR reskin of New World.
I wouldn't be opposed. I liked many of New World's mechanics, just wished it had a little more depth and story. If they take the basic gameplay of NW and focus on fleshing out the world and narrative, I could see this being pretty cool!
Probably same engine but different mechanics.
NW is a good game overall. I can tell you they started off waaaaay better than most other mmos and have done a pretty good job in a pretty short amount of time, the foundations of the game are solid, you can clearly see it's akin to a game that's been out for a few years but it's just lacking in actual content.
FFXIV took almost a decade to be mechanically solid besides just story, GW2 is a decade old and is still trying to figure out what it's trying to do and always experimenting, and ESO found a formula after years and are just sticking to what they know works without any major changes or taking any risks. I'd cut NW some slack considering how long this genre takes to shape up into something decent.

I let out an audible sigh when you said "The same ones that made New World." I enjoyed NW on release for a while for what it was, but I want a LOTR MMO that will have longevity.
The biggest problem with New World is the sheer amount of meta chasing that goes on in the game. It's also extremely repetitive. The combat mechanics themselves feel extremely satisfying.
i want one that is not woke or political and follows the lore not one where they Devs say we are changing it to fit a more modern view.
Longevity isn;t a thing in modern gaming, games today are designed to be played for 2 years MAX before they pump out a sequel.
They already have that's been out for decades now, lotro. Can't get more longevity than that.

They better put in monster-play! One of my main issues with New World was the total lack of story, so it felt pointless after a certain amount of time. Also, most of the zones were pretty unappealing, despite the excellent graphics. If they could put in all the story richness and atmosphere of LOTR plus the beautiful environments, it could be very nice indeed.
Hopefully Monster play would be better than just MPvsP, more like add whole separate faction of evil people, with subfactions of Angmar, Gundabad, Mordor, Harad and Rhun with obscure playable races, like Harad Trollmen, Goblimen, Black Orcs, Spiders and etc.
More than likely they will have a very large part of the Amazon LOTR MMO dedicated to Player versus Player Content. Obviously right now we don't know what factions will be called but going with the Free Peoples & Servants of the Enemy as the early labels is the easy way to refer to them. Nor do we know how much they'll have in terms of playable Content for the Enemy.
Would they have Playable Content Areas, Quests, Dungeons, Raids, etc for an overall akin process as the Free Peoples to Level Up, get Gear, etc? They could if for example as an Orc you start out in Mordor near Udun (North-West Corner in the area of the Black Gate) and then your Playable Content is stuff North, East & South of Mordor. So as an Orc you'd be fighting against mostly Men of Harad, Khand & Rhun during Sauron's conquests as he prepares as much as possible so he can turn Manpower & Resources against the West in the eventual War of the Ring.
Then they could have PvP sections between Mordor & places such as Gondor, Rohan, Lothlorien, Mirkwood, Erebor & Dale where Players on both sides would fight each other for the border lands. But it's all wait & see how they'll go about things, going to be years before a clear picture for how the game will take shape.

I spent a LOT of time in the Ettinmoors doing monster-play in LOTRO, and it was great fun, despite it being an afterthought in that game and restricted to a single zone. If they do as you suggest and have battle-zones, that would be great, as long as they have a way to concentrate ALL the monster players in one zone, so the population doesnt disperse, which happens in PVP games where there are too many choices. Maybe they could cycle through each battle zone one at a time or something.
@@mrzirak792 Yeah, that would be the traditional PvP way of doing it, although the way LOTRO did it with the majority of the game being free people, and monsters as a side-thing if you wanted to pvp, was a very nice way of doing it. That way you could relax in the main MMO (which is nice) and if you wanted intense pvp, you knew you could get it in the Monster-play single zone.
Wait Amazon says they want to make a faithful and accurate LOTR MMORPG but they couldn't bother to do it for their TV series that bombed? Why would anyone trust them? They have a terrible track record with the franchise and a bad track record with their videogame studios and MMORPGs. There is Lord of the Rings Online already, while dated it is still a beautiful game.

I feel cautiously optimistic about this. The lore is already established, and we already know from New World that AGS can make an aesthetically pleasung game. I hope the combat has more depth and that we get some good variety with classes.
Could you do a video about the Warhammer MMO that was also announced? I love the Warhammer Fantasy IP, but it doesnt have nearly as many action games as 40k, so a new MMO in that IP is exciting. Having modern versions of LOTRO and RoR could be refreshing.
Not keen tbh. I just feel like LOTR isn't the most exciting MMO setting. Where exactly can they take it? I can see it being enjoyable at first, but they don't have much freedom when it comes to long-term gear upgrades, enchants, cosmetics, and even enemies (i.e. it's not like we can have a huge awe-inspiring raid where we're up against Ungoliant or Maiar. I don't feel like fighting orcs the entire game). There's a lot of stuff there, don't get me wrong, but their hands are tied creatively right out of the gate, especially with regard to what magic allows them to implement. I'd rather see a Warhammer Fantasy MMO than an LOTR tbh -- the scope of in-universe magic allows for far more without stretching artistic license or outright undermining the lore
From what I understand they are using the same engine that they used for New World and that has been a nightmare. NW would have been a huge success if they had just done it in UE. Also, them claiming that NW offered "huge multiplayer battles" is a joke. The game runs like a power point presentation in large scale fights.

Remaining accurate to main ideas still gives writers plenty of leeway in creating their own work. Changing the origins and purpose of Mithril to enable Elves to be 'cured' is preposterous

Yes, I'm talking about the failure called, "Rings of Power" based upon the appendices at the end of The Return of the King (the only source material Amazon had the rights to), and then not even interpretated correctly. Unless they bought more rights that we haven't heard about.

@@namleist Because it's not a 'retelling' of canon, it's pure fan fiction sans the flashbacks, which are pretty great. RoP takes events from The Silmarillion and fucks them up.

LOTRO is a very good game that nails the look and feel of middle earth despite its age. Amazon can learn a lot from the devs behind LOTRO.
I really like the idea that the studio is building upon what they have been doing rather than throwing everything out and annoucing that they are going for a FPS shooter for example. New World made a lot of mistakes, but if they build on those mistakes then this could be really, really good. Archery in Middle Earth with New World shooting mechanics will be *Chefs Kiss*
Amazon doesn't learn though, have you seen their track-record? Multiple games they simply pulled the plug on cause it wasn't financially interesting to keep works on or pay for servers.
This company doesn't make games for you to enjoy, if it doesn't serve them they cut it. Because of this alot of decisions are made by folks with no game development knowledge and you get well a New World. DOA Game.

As much of a fan I was for LOTRO, its hard to share that fandom with others if they aren't LOTR fans in general (on top of being gamers with lots of time to spare). If they made it where there was stronger emphasis on the monsters side (orcs, goblins, nazgul, easterlings, etc). while providing a 2 faction and great stories for both good vs evil, it would do really well nowadays.

Playing the exact LotRo game Even with an entirely new engine would still lack something, yet the world design and way they 'slid' the player into the story without messing with the established lore is second to none.
@@sraitama9412 not necesssarily if it was done well and respectful of Tolkien works, the darker aspects are already there in Middle-earth, there is enough of that moral ambiguity so popular these days, hell one look at the actual stories of Tolkien and we have the outlaw hero or anti hero Turin Turambar, we have even Bilbo do stuff like steal to survive on the quest of Erebor (he was after all hired as a 'burglar' after all :)) and the lore is there for burglar so rogue like characters with some shady actions:

The 'evil campaigns' of sorts were also already used in RTS games, we have evil campaigns in Battle for Middle-earth games, so why not in the other types. Playing as an Orc with all that it entails, having entire different alternate storyline, is possible to do even in a single player RPG experiecing the game story from different perspectives, playing as an Orc would make all or most of the towns and villages with NPC's somewhat hostile or NPC's fearing the orc character or something and places which are normally the dungeons or bandits camps, bases of enemies would be more 'friendly' towards an orc character that is available for other interactions than killing :).
Truth be told I am in general rather skeptical of Amazon per se...and I am not much into MMO's so I would rather have a proper single player game than this.
Obviously a choice for the player to join with the 'forces of darkness' that also could be affected with the moral choices or morality system also sounds interesting...take if one would happen to delve into black arts of sorcery and necromancy, this could have corrupting effect or something like that...the sorcerers and necromancers are "Such practices are of Morgoth; and the necromancers are of the host of Sauron his servant.” to quote Tolkien.
I would have hundred times prefer to have a game in style of say....Elder Scrolls which would be lore friendly than another MMO. Hell or even make a Lotr game in style of...Witcher 3 with such passion for souce material and attention to detail like CD Projekt had....damn THAT would be dream come true Lotr game!!
You all are crazy if you think this game is going to be any different. That team is completely incompetent, not just at the launch, but to this day. I stuck through all the bullshit and kept hoping they would fix the problems and start making permanent improvements. But it is always 1 step forward 3 steps back. I finally rage quit a few months after the desert update when a new pvp exploit was found where the enemy team could climb up above your spawn point and shoot the people respawning inside. So if you are being spawn camped you would die instantly on respawn. If you ran out they would get you on the other side.
Amazon has repeatedly, over and over, failed miserably at making any game. If you think they are going to do any different of a job with LOTR then you are huffing way to much copium.
Amazon already dumped a sewer full of crap all over Tolkien with that terrible TV show. I have no faith in them doing justice to the lore with an MMO.

Great news! I've played LOTRO for 6+ years and in love with wondering through Middle-Earth, interacting with characters I know from books, movies. I would love a better looking version. But if I remember correctly, Amazon did plan to do a LOTR MMO before and it flopped. Hope they can make it this time
LotRO seemed to understand they were in for the long haul and kept at it, staying true and being clever - incorporating the player into the story. I'm afraid anything made today has to be an instant over the top success or it get booted to the side and forgotten, and that's just from the developer's view, never mind the players.
@terry landess you are correct OT took years for us to get to mordor. It was a really long journey for the players too, and as a player you were there for a lot of the critical moments in the story. Which makes you feel like you are part of the story as well

LOTRO is great for RP, but also for UA-camrs discussing Tolkien's LOTR Lore and Story. I've seen a bunch of cool videos, from awesome creators talking about various places across Middle Earth and actually showing footage from those places in LOTRO. It's much nicer from a viewer perspective to watch a UA-cam video with actual images that fit what the person is talking about :)
Sounds cool kinda like Amazon's recent lotr inspired show sounded cool but we all know how that panned out.

What I disliked about New World was mostly the fact that I didn't feel the world at all. I usually like to play wacky fantasy races in MMORPGs, so if yours only has humans, I am already not that interested, especially if it is a new franchise that I am not invested in. LotR however, is not only the most tried and true fantasy franchise ever, it also will probably at least allow you to play Hobbits and Dwarves, potentially even Orcs, depending on their vision for the gameplay and how PvP will be handled. So yeah, from what I hear so far, I am intrigued for sure.

I can see that happening if there’s a huge PVP aspect of the game, or a separate good and evil storyline. Otherwise I only see orcs and goblins being mobs since they are suppose to be evil. I love a good orc/goblin slaying so we will see

I have been seeing new MMO in development that looks good/promising for the last 2 or 3 years now, how many have released since then though 1 New world that's really it. I guess im just impatient but it would be nice if some of those in development games would release now.
And the black desert devs canceled their mmo and made it single player 😂

So the first thing I'm thinking about is that you will be able to pick either good, or bad side for epic battles.
I doubt that it'll probably be more like you can either side with the men, elves or dwarfs and you'll fight in certain events against each other highly doubt you'll play an orc or anything not much of a story there other than you're just a cog in a machine who's dumb and aggressive lmao orcs have no character development capability

Chris Pierson, the Loremaster of LotRO deep-dives the source material, even the works they don't have the rights to and creates a 10000-word document that is read like an RPG Guide for the writers and the worldbuilders to take whatever they need.
Meanwhile the Vice-president of Amazon Games said that they won't pay 100% attention to detail. Not the strongest of starts.

I think if we want a solid game then taking 100% attention to detail is a bad choice when it comes to MMO.
It's extremely limiting, and as many have suggested it would be cool to have 2 factions where you can play as orcs etc. Which doesn't fit with the lore at all, which limits fun!
So right. They make RoP and said that they would be respecting lore, then just 💩all over the lore. Don't trust Amazon at all with anything, especially their games.

True to the source material says the company that made rings of power which is so far away from the source material, it doesn't get any further! I don't believe it for a second and I won't believe it until I see it.
I really hope they make a game that is not " too fast paced". The whole running around in circles spamming buttons is what turns me of a bit from mmorpg's, mainly in pvp.
Action combat, making the figting feel "slower and heavy" would be fantastic imo.
Obviously we need to be able to play both sides.
Humans, elfs, dwarfs, hobbits,
Orcs, goblins, uruk-hai, easterling,
And use magic in moderation. A sword attack should not imo have use magic effect in general.
I feel like healing spells should not be a grand thing. It should also be used in moderation.
What im trying to say is, you dont need a huge blast of healing if a sword attack dont unleash a huge fire blast. Use magic as the movies did. As a spice, in a pretty realistic world
They need to make a good lord of the rings game like Skyrim
New World was a buggy mess filled with exploits and bots for at least the first 5 months (if not still?) Not sure why we should trust Amazon to make another MMO after that last failure. All New World had going for it was its pretty environments and a few unique game mechanics.

I dunno, somehow it feels like I'm back in 2008, and EA announces SWTOR, while Warhammer Online didn't even manage to find its footing. Not saying it's the same, but at least I'm having a flashback.
This has potential, but I’m expecting it to be heavily monetized.
I wish it was set in the first age instead. that would have been wayyy more interesting to me but I’ll still try this IF it ever releases.

I always loved the Lord of the Rings games. Battle of middle earth was a great strategy game with a great extension. And I also love Lotro. As a child I read all the books and already dreamed about the coming video games and they didn’t disappoint😅
Imagine they would build the whole Middle Earth map, I know the New World map was kinda small that's why mounts aren't really needed since you can sprint the whole map in 10 minutes, Imagine full Middle Earth from west to east with hundreds of thousands of players and cities and iconic locations and forests and regions and races
I never looked into New World for reasons and now hear you can cross in that short a time? If you're curious, just do a search on UA-cam for a video from LOTRO riding across the map or something. Then grab a sandwich and chill for a bit. You'll hear LotRO a lot - for a good reason, but even I think it needs to keep it's 'body' but have some parts redesigned and given a new game engine.
I HATE the look, feel and movement of New World. This is a true nightmare..

Probably the worst company to make a good game and even more so with a good franchise. Its gonna shit on LotR worse than EA does with Starwars or Blizzard with Diablo. Its the candy crush age for anything we use and its an effing nightmare.

The main concern with amazon is they lock so much character content and art behind a cash shop, plus new world is yet to be on console and they had so many bugs and server queue issues

This is great news honestly, I know it will come in a few years but a LOTR MMO with New World Action Combat sounds really cool! Imagine dodging trolls attacks, fighting invasions of orcs alongside other players... Maybe I shouldn't but I am hyped!

I am a huge LOTR fan, but this would be a hard pass for me. It's not because of New World or any technical criticisms. First, Amazon has shown that it is willing to play fast and loose with LOTR. I don't hate the series they created, but it is in many ways nothing like LOTR and some of the story decisions Amazon was OK with were breathtakingly off script. Second, I think it is a huge mistake to set the game in the most well established of the time periods in this world setting. It automatically locks you out of feeling like you are a pivotal character in any key story line. This is why they Hogwarts game avoided the time period of the books like the plague. I have no interest in playing water boy to Legolas or squire to Boromir. I also don't want to rehash a slow dawn out march to an inevitable conclusion of where the story goes, how the story goes and when the story goes.
You can't stay true to the original without a prescriptive story and narrative if has all been read and analyzed for decades.

Considering what Amazon did with their "authentic" take on their LoTR show? What they made with New World? Lmao, don't kid me my friend, they're doing nothing true to the source material and will likely hit as hard as a wet noodle, least that's what 99% of my heart, spirit, and brain is telling me...but we can have that 1% of hope it might not fail like New World or their LoTR tv show.
Even if Amazon comes out with this, I’m a loyal LOTRO fan….so nope not gonna change.

There have been tons of people & will be more in the coming years who are chomping at the bit to play a Visually Modern LOTR Video Game with hopefully a good amount of Middle-earth to be in. Even New World going off Steam's Numbers had the 7th most All Time Peak Concurrent Players granted obviously this not lasting due to the variety of issues the Game had & still has.
Hard to say how many Players for LOTRO here in 2023 but at least back in Sept 2020 & reported in Dec 2020 by Enad Global 7 (EG7): LOTRO had over 108,000 Accounts & 41,000 Subscribers with a $9.9 Million USD YTD earning for September 30th, 2020. LOTRO has since after Sept 2020 received 1 Expansion, 2 Mini-Expansions, 4 Quest Packs, 1 New Class & 1 Instance Cluster and have an upcoming Quest Pack, Expansion and New Class for the Second Half of 2023. Along with 2022 being a very Quality of Life Focused which brought much needed changes which helped eliminate older barriers keeping Current, Returning & New Players from wanting to invest time & possibly money into LOTRO. 2022 also was the largest amount of Players seen in recent years although neither the Developers, Publisher or Enad Global 7 (EG7) reported on what those numbers were but it was very noticeable although lack of Group Content did hurt that side of the Game in 2022.
It obviously doesn't compete with plenty of Games, MMO or otherwise, but it still has enough Players to justify Development & continued additions of Content. While not the most successful Game or MMO out there in 2023, if your Game is making money that can be reinvested to create more Content & money, that is a successful game. LOTRO is far from dead or dying as it just keep trucking along while doing it's own thing.
I heard about it but a while ago it was said that they gave up. If the news you heard are recent this means they changed their mind again.
