  • After the box office "huh?" that was Prometheus, Ridley Scott was brought back yet again to tackle it's sequel. As such, you know a lot of the direction is the same.. but considering the great many critiques of Prometheus, does Alien Covenant right these wrongs? Or.. make new ones?

I think what decker is trying to say is that it's closer to a 90s action flick with exaggerated action, cliche actors/elements, and a makeshift storyline to give the action some meaning. It's far from an alien flick because an alien movie needs suspense and the fear of the unknown, this....is just dumb action with no real meaning. Did I interpret that correctly Decker?

You know what would be cool? If a facehugger managed to impregnate a burrowing creature, it would make it pretty tense as even in an open area on a planet, you can't see them when they come, keeping it pretty tense

Peter McIntyre Can facehuggers even impregnate such small animals? Unless they make up a fictional animal, I don't see it.

To my mind Prometheus (and Lindelof) ruined the franchise for good. Once the mystery of the space jockey was attached to the 'engineers' and the alien itself was reduced to a swiss-army bioweapon-by-design the sense of awe and dread from the whole enterprise seems lost for good. What made Alien and Aliens so great was the mystery around the creature, its abilities and behaviors, and its alien yet coherent biological logic. Once Lindelof introduced all this nonsense about the engineers and religious themes, the whole feel was toast. The Alien franchise was always set in an atheistic universe without 'gods', which is what the engineers basically were, and good sci fi had better had a good reason to introduce a master race and give them a compelling explanation or origin story themselves, but Prometheus doesn't, and Covenant (ugh another religious reference) just continues with the massacre of the original idea.

Wasn't there a mural of a xenomorph in Prometheus? How could that be if David created them in Covenant?....

    • @temp911Luke
      @temp911Luke 7 років тому +28

Initially David was not suppose to be the creator of the aliens. Mr.Scott changed it in the process of making this movie. He even says so in one of the interviews. He says: "Its more interesting".

Bro, Scott fucked the whole deal up. He fucked it up. The minute he tried to go away from the fact that the xenomorph was a living organism that is parasitical, and just that, he screwed the pooch. When this happens, he has to explain everything and find more unexplainable ways to explain the explanation, which creates a big circle of theoretical questions and non-answers. Prometheus provided a map towards the species but then went a completely different direction for no reason but to satiate the many who did not get more alien exposure in the first installment. This movie had no pace or suspense; Alien was kind of like hide and seek, Aliens was more like a fight to survive. Within those stories, characters were developed and we all wanted to find out more about how frail humanity...even with guns and technology coupled with deception, (we actually do fuck each other over for a god damned percentage) can survive in the presence of an unknown, unforgiving and deadly organism.
The shower scene was a hack-job from Friday the 13th at best and there was no real detailed explanation of how the eggs were created and how this black spore stuff came about; all of this is basically a manner to fill in and explain how the mess was made. This story arch could have been cut into at least two more movies that go in the same stage as the alien life cycle...the egg, the face-hugger, the chest burster and the alien itself...its motivations, its overarching purpose. Instead, it was all crammed into one film and we learned nothing solid about this iconic organism.
At this point, it's a mess and the best course of action is to scrap this origin stuff and get to the story of lv 426 and how the colonists fought valiantly and ultimately succumbed to the xenomorph species before the Marines showed up. Paul Reiser is still alive to lend the voice of Burke, they can find any young blond haired girl to play Newt and there is more than enough source material in Aliens (doctor's notes in the lab) to solidly explain what happened in the colony. Newt in effect can play a Ripley-type role in her being the last one left alive.

    • @bagsikdangal
      @bagsikdangal 7 років тому +5

KingKaleem To be honest, Ash might have something to do on why the Xenomorph chestbursters looks serpentine in the first Alien film. Ash from what I remember was injecting Kane while facehugged. Those injections might have made the gestation process longer and also might have made the Xenomorph chestburster look serpentine. In James Cameron's Aliens, the Xenomorph chestburster has arms. Sure the legs weren't shown since it was killed while it was still in the Colonist's chest. Alien 3 has that Doctor injecting Ripley which could be the reason why the gestation process was longer. Plus it was a Queen Xenomorph. Not to mention this was David's first attempt in creating the Xenomorph. You can say the Xenos on Alien Covenant is windows 1.

They explained the xenomorph in the comics perfectly, it's basically a "ant" on it's home world and and intricate part of an advanced alien ecosystem. This series of new Alien movies ruins everything in my humble opinion. Total sh#$!

Prometheus is terrible, Alien Covenant is waaay better easily 3rd best film of the franchise. The characters aren't anywhere near as catastrophically moronic as the crew of the Prometheus who all died because of their ungodly levels of stupidity like "hey, we're on an alien world and have no idea what we're up against so lets not bring any weapons because this is a scientific expedition." and lets not forget "This is an invitation even though we have literally nothing to back that up with." or the scientist that literally made the fucking map getting lost with the scientist who is terrified of dead aliens yet tries to play with a live obviously hostile Vagina Penis Cobra alien thing like it was a puppy.

Oram reasons for going down there were justified in the sense that after the cyrosleep disaster no one was eager to go back into Cryosleep after watching the captain get bbq'd alive and loosing an additional 40 or so colonists he even took a vote and besides that Daniels even brought up her concerns with him before landing. Also it was go to the habitable planet that would only take weeks vs the other planet that would take 7 years to get to and on top of that they got a signal from another human which brings morality into play not to mention if you remember in the original Alien all signals indicating possible intelligent origin must be investigated or total forfeiture of shares will occur.
As for no bio hazards suits I did think that was dumb but at least they had the sense to bring weaponry along unlike the expedition in Prometheus which was looking for aliens with no knowledge as to whether or not they were hostile.
The woman who put the infected guy in quarantine than breaks it to try and kill the Neomorph I get it because the person was a friend and also they were panicking can you say in the same situation you wouldn't loose your shit at the site of something so horrific? Finally the Neomorph broke through the glass and it's not like she had much option besides trying to kill the fucking thing at point. Also remember these were not trained soldiers they were a flight crew, colonists and scientists. Combat is not their strong suite
The woman who went to clean up her wounds I can understand because she was told as was the rest of the survivors by David 8 that the building was safe from the Neomorphs and also she brought a gun. Is it a little suspect? Sure but no more so than your average Friday the 13th or Halloween film so I can easily let that go unlike the bullshit with the Vagina cobra in Prometheus which was special order retarded.
Oram's death I chalk it up to curiosity killed the cat. Yeah was it a little dumb? yes but no more so than Kane getting attacked by the facehugger in the original film.
Difference between Covenant and Prometheus? I can actually explain away some of the dumb moments in the film I can't do that with Prometheus.

At this time, we have to now regard these "prequels" as a reboot. They lack continuity, or consistency. Somehow this movie managed to diminish not only the Xenomorphs but even the Engineers...better off reading the Dark Horse comics. That said, in keeping with Alien tradition we have another horror trope...and it is "Island of the Mad Scientist"; so in other words (group shipwrecked on island with vicious monsters, meet charismatic but clearly disturbed man in charge; turns out he is creating some horrible thing as his idea of "perfection" and hates humanity....yeah this is a cliché as old as the 1920's if not older...what the Hell Ridley Scott? What happened to thousands of years old, mysterious life form; I could have even accepted that the Engineers made them and they wiped out their civilization in the process...but this? Come on; I felt like I watched a B-movie painted over with Blade Runner.

I honestly think that Alien 3 had a better plot with more suspense, and I don't even really like that movie beyond Charles Dance and the fact that some of the actors tried the best they could. Unlike Prometheus, which I can accept just for how good David was as a character, this movie is even worse in its hollow bullshit, how can you piss on Alien fans by making a shitty action movie with bad GC and lazy scares (while snubbing Aliens because "muh action", nice try Scott) AND Prometheus fans simultaneously by not exploring or explaining the alien creators crap that you DECEITFULLY SOLD PROMETHEUS AS, THAT WHOLE MOVIE IS A TEASE THAT GOES NOWHERE, AND YOU KILL OFF THE SURVIVING MAIN PROTAGONIST OFF SCREEN?! WTF?!
All that cheese about Shaw looking for her maker, that could have been good...and you pissed all over that idea, the central idea to the last movie, it reminds me of the Transformers movies teasing space like "okay, now you can get to the answers and good movie next time" before pulling the rug out from under you. I guess the creator story wasn't worth telling...even though that was your entire conceit last time, boy that really reinforces the idea that Prometheus wasn't pretentious and hollow because it wouldn't actually go anywhere, I really wanted to be proven wrong and see some good motives or *words* come out of the Engineers, but oh well. God is dead and all that.
As other people here have pointed out, the mural depicts the facehugger and original xenomorph (not the back burster mini aliens, how the fuck..what..we light Alien 3 and Resurrection and effigy for their shitty subspecies Aliens but just accept these CG abominations, fuck at least I could buy the dog/cow Alien, and the idea was interesting because it showed biological alterations that was new lore instead of "God Robot built them from Magic Goo"), so the lazy hacks that wrote this couldn't even watch THE LAST FILM and write something that made sense. I thought Prometheus was asspull, but this...this is embarrassing. Everyone somehow gave the fucking magic goo (Goo?!?!) a pass and the snake was fine, but spores? Magic..spores now? What is the point? In the next movie the cardboard cutouts may as well be struck by alien rays and implanted, what happened to the horror and art of ideas like the original facehugger?
And everyone is like "Yeah, AVP, Predator 2, Aliens, the Expanded Comics, bits of Prometheus, yeah that was never cannon", since when exactly? A lot of the lore of the universe comes from the decades worth of movies and matieral that's actually happened, yeah I don't like the AVP movies either but no one ever wiped them out of existence until *this* came out. Decker's lore videos have wholesome information because of the whole franchise, like hell we should throw a boatload of material that at least *tried* purely to justify a shitty B movie with terible characters, terrible CG, and a PATHETIC "Gotcha!" moment that has no meaning as they could just kill it here or kill off the characters off screen like they did last time.
This movie is like the Other M of the franchise, EVERYTHING aside from Alien and even that is of dubious cannocity, because George Lucas syndrome kicked in for a guy who already left the series to others, and is flailing like a child because Blade Runner was taken out from under him, and he wants to sate his ego.
This garbage was shat out because Scott couldn't handle Blompcamp maybe making a really good film, something that could challenge the first 2 (Aliens WAS a masterpiece action movie and I don't give a fuck what the snobs say about it), and mark me on this, this movie in time will have the rightfully earned reputation as a pile of shit, at least Resurrection is so bad it's funny, and 3 tried a little. This movie was lazy, full of shitty characters, and if it wasn't made by Ridley Scott everyone would have dived on it for the utter waste it is.

The best part of the alien franchises first two films (and a little bit in the third.) is that they spend some time developing the relationships of the characters and developing a few really well then they give you that mystery and dread of anticipation because you see very little of the monsters and most of the time you are sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for it to attack right there with the characters. (Much like in the alien isolation game.) Prometheus and covenant traded that in for an action film formula.

    Hey DS!
My first time watching one of your more "out of character" reviews and they're also great!
    Couldn't agree more.
I saw it in 4DX in New York and had a lot of fun VIEWING the movie (moving seats, getting water squirted in my face, smelling James Franco's burning corpse), but a ton of gripes with the film itself.
I'm a bag fan of both Alien and Prometheus (the more action-oriented entries into the franchise leave me cold as well), and felt that this movie squandered itself at nearly every turn.
A:C felt so reactionary, an attempt to both please Prometheus fans, please everyone who yelled "hey, where's the alien" AND create an entirely new story.
To my eyes, they couldn't do all three, and really shouldn't even have tried to do two.
It seems to me that if there's any strength to Prometheus for non-fans, its that it carves its own path. It makes no really direct allusions to Alien, and stands as its OWN THING, for better or worse.
This movie at almost all times is leaning on the legs of the films before and after it.
I think one of the things that makes this movie particularly difficult to decide on is it badly playing to our expectations. The new story is really cool, but feels like its structured at the service of eventually getting THE ALIEN back on A SPACESHIP. And as soon as it does that... It get really boring. The movie's got no new ideas after that!
I'm all for GOING IN and GETTING RELIGIOUS with this movie. They have trailed called "Last Supper" and a crucified alien on the movie poster. I'm ready for Adam & Eve, Christ, new civilization! Instead, we get the "Captain of Faith" who doesn't last long and has a flimsy character trait like Shaw's "barrenness."
The lack of James Franco in the movie is suspect as well. I didn't mind either way, but after paying for Franco, putting him prominently in the second trailer (made mostly of footage unseen in the movie) and showing him only for a hardly recognizable glimpse... I suspect there is a LOT of early film left on the cutting room floor here.
My final gripe is that this movie has no BIG SCENE. Alien has the chestburster, Prometheus has the cessarian abortion... What does A:C have?
    I had a fine time. It's a popcorn movie!
The artfulness is dropped, but at the sake of generic action. Not much to grab hold of either way.

    SPOILERS** SPOILERS***
    The movie was disappointing.
    1. All characters except for David, Walter and Daniels were expendable and not that interesting
    2. The story was like 75% an Alien 1979 ripoff (A bunch of people awake from cryosleep and end up investigating a planet after receiving a signal. Bad thing happen and they bring someone on board with an alien inside of him. The lead character, a female, kills it) and 25% prometheus continuation (sorta)? The movie tries to satisfy both alien and prometheus lovers but fails at both. I loved prometheus overall and wish to have seen the direct continuation of Shaw's story and learn more about the engineers but NOPE. It looked like 2 movies put into 1 in a bad way
    3. The CGI for the Alien (xenomorph) looks fake. It looked way better in 1979. Come to think of it the Alien in this movie looked like it's from a video game.
    4. The explanation of how the xenomorph came to be is not all that great. Rather have them be the result of millions of years of evolutions through the worse of environment then the product of a long blond haired android experiments in a cave The visual, soundtrack, and atmosphere was good though
    Anways I give it a 6.5 / 10

I hated both but like Prometheus more. Too many things done far worse. Especially the characters, loss of horror outside of the most cliche scenes possible, and pandering to the original xenomorph with none of the soul. No care was given to the continuity of Xenos traits and I really didn’t think the characters could get even dumber with less development. Even David while trying to be deep was ruined by the highly telegraphed plot he follows.

I'm not sure the Alien franchise can get back the tension and horror many of us crave. Too much water under that bridge. The aura around the creature is gone because of all the liberties taken with it over the years. I agree with all your criticisms about Covenant. Maybe if they were put right this film might have got close but I think one of the frustrations of this movie is facing the realisation they can't recapture the X factor of the original Alien movie. It was a small story with a hint of somethings huge in the background. That made the horror up close and personal. Now the characters are Alien kibble plonked in to advance the grand story. We can't connect. Shame

David had 10 years or so with nearly unrestricted access to engineer technology, it makes sense that the Engineers made the perfect organism, the xenomorph, and David was merely following their guide, and since it was his first time 'round it didn't come out quite the same; notice how the chestburster is different, and how the alien is a bit less mechanical looking.

I liked your point on Sigourney Weaver not being written as a female character but a crew member. I fear modern movies will try too hard to make it obvious that they're replicating or pushing a particular character due to the fact they're female - looking back on recent Alien franchise with female leads; Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Resurrection, AVP, even Alien: Isolation, Prometheus and now Covenant.
Personally, Tennessee was more preferable to me than Daniels, he could've been our main in act 3 and I wouldn't have complained.
Lack of scare was also laughable, considering Scott and cast and crew are on record stating that the movie is terrifying.

Why would the engineers have zero safety protocol for their own biological weapons?
How does the black goo/dust work and what are its full effects?
Why was the xenomorphs' growth rate somehow just as fast as it was in AVP?
Did David make the classic xenomorphs, or did he figure out the engineers' method of making them?
Why are these characters so stupid as to make some so many asinine decisions?
Why exactly did David go Hannibal Lecter meets Hammer's Frankenstein?
Why did David dissect someone he admits showed him kindness?
What's up with the crappy sequel-bait?

i can give you some answers, though there is still some stupid shit in the movie.
-the infection probably spread and wiped out the planet, they arrived 10 years ago who knows what happened.
-black goo mutates everything it comes into contact with, a big enough amount kills you immidiately while a smaller dosis transforms the life into Xeno like beings, or infects them with a host.
-David used selective breeding to get from (probably) the naked backbreaker aliens to the classic alien, ridley scott basically ret-conned everthing he disliked/disapproved.

I have one thing to say. Walter is Data, and David is Lore. Remember when they found Lore on that planet where everybody and everything was dead? Remember how Lore was communicating with an evil alien entity that was wiping out life on entire worlds? Remember how Lore tried to kill Data, and how Lore switched places with Data? Remember how Lore was found out because he didn't respond the way he was supposed to? Wait, are you telling me I'm describing events in ALIEN: Covenant? No, I'm describing and episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation from season one called "Datalore." I know this because it I just watched it on Netflix two weeks ago, and it almost ruined this movie for me. Fortunately Covenant was so good that it didn't matter.
P.S. There was even a scene where it was shown that Data was made differently because Lore made people nervous...

Things that made me lol and cringe about the movie:
So David named himself David because of the first statue he saw? So if he saw a statue of Flavor Flav or Kanye West, he would name himself as either one of those two. lol
So in order to show who is boss, Peter Weyland orders David to pour him tea. lol. Should have either just piss on David to show dominance or ordered him to give him an old fashion.
So out of over 2000 colonist, the spaceship does not have anymore pilots or security personnel or even soldiers sleeping in the cryo pod? lol. They were going to an unknown habitable world and they only brought in a handful of people to scout it and left on 3 behind on the massive spaceship.
So the small scouting team just left behind one woman to guard their ONLY SHUTTLE, while they go out without any fucking helmets, talk about not taking the proper safety precautions. At least in Prometheus, the screw wore helmets, until that one fucking idiot took his off. lol
So the wife of the captain basically brought a visibility infected crew member back onto THEIR ONLY SHUTTLE and did not even have any proper safety precaution. lol.
So after surviving an Alien attack, the survivors basically did a "lets split up in a haunted mansion" cliche. lol.
So the captain knew that there was definitely something wrong with David, but instead of just shooting David's head off or calling for back up, he instead just follows David into a fucking Dark and spooky place alone.
So David and Walter were clearly almost having a tie match, and it could go either way, instead of helping Walter, Daniels (Which is a male name) instead goes outside. They could have easily defeated David. cringe.
The main female character has been shown to be very observant, how the fuck could she not have noticed Walter/David's different hair style or even "arm injury".

I had just gotten back from seeing this with my Pops tonight, and tbh, me and Pops enjoyed it. It was the very first _Alien_ film we've seen in cinemas, so we decided to just shut up and embrace it for what it was. Yeah, I did have some problems with it, such as how James Franco was reduced down to a merely non-speaking role, and the David/Xenomorph twist was a bit "WTF?" for the sake of a major plot twist, it clearly feels like Ridley Scott had compromised for the sake of pleasing the fans. But in the end I just did not care tonight, I just enjoyed here, and my Pops enjoyed it a lot, of which I am happy about, as I do want my dad to be happy with the movies we see.

You have to remember that Riddley absolutely hated the idea of a queen. The absence of a queen in Covenant is Riddley telling "his" story. I can't remember the specifics, but when the queen idea was first told to him, Riddley said something along the lines of "I'll never do an Alien film again if that comes out." Alien was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are the result of different writers that apparently had the attention span of a cat chasing a laser pointer.
I don't know what the reason will be but I can't wait for Fox to explain how David convinced the space jockey to fly a craft loaded with thousands of eggs that he developed after brutally murdering a small population of its species.

Wouldn't it be hard to make a scary movie about a creature that we all know and love for like almost 40 years by now? :P ( I mean yeah I don't even live as long but you catch the meaning ;) ) They'll try (maybe) but the action side of those movies is inevitable. As for the "stupidity" of characters... I wouldn't be suprised that they've cut the hell of the Covenant as they've did with Prometheus that made all these people's actions look stupid as fuck.

  • @ltshep713

How to fix the David vs Walter scene. Have Walter notice that David is going for the knife, he says "Don't try it." or something along those lines, David's arm swings upward, but the camera cuts to outside the room and a yell of is heard. (I know they don't feel pain, but whatever.) Cut to outside as the crew are leaving, an android is seen walking out behind them, there's some suspense, who is it? As he nears the crew, Daniels stumbles but the android catches her, and in Walter's voice reassures her "I've got you." The rest plays out as normal.
Just that little bit could have made the "surprise" at least somewhat surprising. It'd still be obvious for some though, but at least now it wouldn't just be those who are below the age restriction to watch the film anyway.

  • @aldenburton6240

Now that I think of it.... the perfect sequel to Prometheus was a 90 min. or longer movie about David and Shaw bonding on that alien ship while she is slowly repairing him, discussing and debating even about life and god and frozen yoghurt, with the final scene being him releasing the goo as he did in Covenant for the epic climax with that quote of Ozimandias (or whoever).
Maybe add a little drama between them so we get a hint but no definite answer what was happening to Shaw. Dabble a bit in some possible society relevantions of the engineer ship+lore to keep audience interested for the engineer main world. use Alien: Covenant as a distraction inbetween filler like Rogue One is.
End this saga with a movie connecting everything from prometheus and give an answer based on the director's views or visions without asking questions again. In short, do a fucking old school story arc without artsie fartsie bullshit as its main purpose.
And voila, you have yourself a nice and deep look into the Alien universe while keeping fans of monster horror movies and mystery cracks happy.

I agree with most people when they say that Prometheus and Alien: Covenant completely screwed up the Alien mythos/canon. However, I still liked Covenant and even found elements of Prometheus enjoyable. I think that we should set them aside and not consider them to be part of the official Alien universe, but spin-offs or quasi-reboots instead. By doing that we won't waste time trying to reconcile the screwed up story-lines and appreciate them as separate series.

I think this movie will grow on you in time because you seem to criticize it heavily on not delivering on the horror aspect. Take the movie for what it is in this case. It wasn't particularly scary but I think for younger audiences it could certainly be scary. I think michael fassbender did incredible (as always), but his character was deeper and more nuanced at the same time. The alien aspect of the movie was very weak and I will give you that, but it opens a lot of interesting ideas as well. How does David control the aliens so well? Lets not forget that were getting more fassbender in the next movie and thats fucking awesome. Good movie in my opinion. I think you were too hard on it, but I hear your points. Should give it a few more watches and see if you enjoy it more.

  • @dloverise
    @dloverise 7 років тому

This movie is what happens when the studio panics... and the director loses his bottle. Prometheus was not a bad film, it was a beautiful movie, with a really interesting concept (with some great characters) but a terrible, terrible script instead of improving on this they went with what they thought the popcorn munchers wanted and instead we got something that no one likes--a terrible alien movie that annihilates the lore of alien and yet another Lindelof cock tease where none of the really interesting questions from Prometheus (e.g. where did we come from, why did they make us, why are they killing us) are properly explored or answered.
If people want to see a brilliant alien style movie, you should watch life 2017-this film works as a tension filled slasher in space precisely because you don't know anything about how the alien was made. The thrill of the film is learning about what it can and cannot do. The first two alien films were great because of the mystery... now everyone knows the gestation cycle of the alien and what it does, it is no longer scary.
So, they needed to do one of two things:
    1. Go with a new alien movie... that is set on the alien home planet (it turned out they are a natural phenomenon). There are new threats, *and the aliens behave in ways we haven't seen before*... perhaps leading to aliens finally get to earth.
    2. A Prometheus II-exploring the relationship with David and Shaw (they become friends... but Shaw discovers that David deliberately impregnated her by infecting her lover). They find more information on the ship about the engineers (perhaps revealing some inherent flaw in human genetics which suggests the black goo was always intended for humans (maybe the humans represent one of many cattle planets and shaw finds evidence of thousands of populated worlds) where the human are essentially lab rats. Perhaps they find another completely different sentient being on the ship, or may the deacon alien (or the weird snake things) made it onto the ship. Or, if the engineers turn out to be benevolent, perhaps the humans were responsible for the aliens escaping at some point in the future and it turns out the engineers can also travel through time. Perhaps that first engineer that was discovered on LV 422 was the engineer equivalent of a Ripley who was placed in hypersleep because he disagreed with what his engineer colleagues were doing on the planet, and the reason he sets a course for earth is that he realises there is a very real danger that humans may visit again and want to use the black goo themselves.
(Perhaps David reveals that another ship had set off after Prometheus to land on LV 422 (or whatever its called) and Shaw has to decide whether to go back to the planet or continue on the mission to see the engineers)... (for those seeking more action the movie could flip back and forth between the two... but I'm not sure it is necessary). The movie ends with Shaw arriving at an advanced engineer home planet... meeting the engineers, perhaps they take her away to experiment on her, but the movie ends here *for the third instalment*).

Personally I liked this movie and I have a shit load of theories behind everything. But I feel like the community is recently at everyone's throats when it comes to expressing the answer to the questions that were left open cos every video i find has a 50/50 like/dislike bar ratio.
Anyway, I hope you actually come up with your own theory on this!

My favorite Alien movies(worst to best)
Alien Resurrection(just terrible but at least there’s a hot synthetic chick)
Aliens(too much action, the Xenomorphs got killed too easily, not much horror but still great, the scariest scene was when the aliens killed the power)
Alien 3(yes, this is above Aliens for me because there are a lot of characters to kill off and a lot of horror throughout the movie, both the original and extended are great)
Alien(the original is still the best, no action but all horror, a slow but terrifyingly suspenseful build up to the horror)

I agree with most most of what you were say, I am looking forward to seeing an extended feature.
I think a whole lot of material got cut of them exploring the city, that would really flesh out the material (trying to workout what happened, while the alien incubates.
for me the issue was more that David was essentially the main character, but as this film is told from the crews point of view... so everything he says is pretty much a lie, and we don't actually find out exactly what happened to him. seeing him turning from inquisitive creation to joker level psychopath.
that said i still really enjoyed it :)

    Ok spoiler talk
I don't like the way they are going with the aliens origin and i have no idea how this can connect to the first movie but that's not the biggest problem for me because i could deal with it if this was a very well made movie.
    Which is not.
This is a beautifull looking movie with really good special effect but the story is on the same level of most movie that Decker review on his channel: things happen because people are dumb and they are dumb because the script needs them to be dumb.
Go to a new planet that you don't know? Don't wear suit\mask or any protective gear and poke around weird stuff
Someone got sick? Don't quarantine him, i'm sure alien diseases are not contagious at all
A weird alien creature is on the planet? Split up to wash your boby because sweat is bad for good looking women
A creepy robot tells you to poke your head in front of a weird alien egg? Do it! What could possibly go wrong?
All these things exist for the simple reason that someone didn't want to waste time thinking a better plot because they could give an explanation or create a better situation for most of them but tha would take effort.
It's shocking to think that alien resurrection may have a better script in some moments than alien covenant.

totally agree with your critique of this film, surprised you'd give it a 3/5! I actually really liked Prometheus and thought this was considerably worse, the dumb scientists in Pro are nothing on this bunch of idiots..

Its good movie but wors from all alien movies. Its waisted potencial of real dark story. I wana see David killing DrShaw in space and experiment on her making from her alien queen. On the end the movie I wana see bombing this engineers planet. I think prometheus was more completed movie this one dnt now what wanna be. I preefer more dark storyes for example I wana see David nuts like DrWeir in event horizon. I waiting for movie what happend on those 10 yeras. Actionand cgi is weak wery poor.

Definitely worth waiting for the DVD the writing absolutely sucked. The visuals the set making and the CG were exceptionally good but the storyline is just ridiculous and stupid the film doesn't answer any other questions that the second film built up to they must've really put the screws to all the wrighters again. If people knew what goes on in the politics in Hollywood they would understand how this happens. A lot of the great science-fiction films happened because all the Brats in Hollywood didn't have any interest in them at all until they became successes and made a name for themselves and then all the no talent no wonder idiots want to jump in and be a part of it , oh I forgot to mention the Jewish mob they kill people. Yeah don't make any little twerp feel like they're inferior or they might have some in your family or you murdered in the worlds most corrupt police department the Los Angeles police department will facilitate their efforts by not investigating the crime's . This film definitely spells again for the alien franchise it's the last nail in the coffin

Ridley Scott wanted to make a film about artificial intelligence but no studio was interested (if its not a franchise they're not interested). Scott came up with a great idea: Offer to make an Alien origin movie but actually make your film about artificial intelligence - the end result was Prometheus. Ridley Scott is a good visual director but he relies on fantastic writers like Dan O'Bannon to create suspense and tension by creating characters we care about. Scott doesn't know how and he's destroying his own legacy thus.

Entertainment value was good. Alien Franchise plot connection point far from it. Like Prometheus it left more he's and questions then answers. Ridley Scott does great work but enough with screwing with our heads!

A Desensitized age unfortunately...Horror is not horror as in Ridley's day the criteria changes with each generation. 'The thing' for some "paranormal activity" for others if you wanna add horror for the new age it seems to be going to psychological suspense. Gets you in the head.

I'm really torn on this. On one hand I wanted a straight up sequel to Prometheus so I can see what became of my girl Dr. Shaw. On the other I'm really stoked about just being thrilled in the theater again by an actual Alien that I legitimately was on the edge of my seat. Haven't been that scared of the big chap in a long time(I know it's not the original big chap that we got from Alien, but it's still as close as we've gotten to it since the original movie and Alien Isolation).
