If you're wondering he was about 5'6". Thing is French inches were a bit bigger than the English ones so when people in England heard he was only about 5'3" they just took the ball and ran with it. Also, he was often depicted standing among his Old Guard, an elite unit of veteran troops who were usually picked for their size as well, (you had to be at least 6' to join.) So a normal-sized man being surrounded by the Basket Ball players of their time is going to look like a manlet no matter what.

Didn't have a whole lot to do with artillery, and didn't have a whole lot to do with America. The eastern front was a lot bloodier, and the English world has a tendency to teach a biased perspective of the war.
If anything, I'd say the US played a major role in protecting European democracies after Russia was done steamrolling through the continent, and saving Asia from Japanese conquest. Russia definitely wanted to incorporate a huge chunk of Europe into itself, but ally pressure (especially American) pretty much prevented this.

Napoleon is considered one of the best generals of all time in his ability to consistently defeat all the other major powers of Europe at the same time, but what makes him also great was his ability to revitalize France and be a good leader to his people. He brought equality to the nation and dissolved any form of slavery in his empire except in the Carribean, though he made one of his black generals the leader of Haiti at the time as well as having another one lead much of his forces. In that sense he was able to bring Equality to France to everybody except women which is often why he is looked upon favorable in history

Britain, for most of “modern” history, had one of the single most dominant Navies the world had ever seen. Events like the Spanish Armada are a perfect illustration of this. When you think about it, Britain logically had to prioritize their Navy; they’re a small island with relatively little land to defend and lots of ocean to watch and defend. The Battle of Trafalgar is in fact only the end of a long descent into hell for the French navy which started during the Revolution.
In fact, during the Anglo-French War (1778-1783), during the context of American independence, the French Navy had been able, thanks to reforms, to take revenge on the Royal Navy since the Seven Years War.
However, the reinvigorated French Navy was severely weakened again, as it was the Nobles who ruled the Ships, and most of the Maritime Regions in France were Royalists. They therefore preferred to scuttle their own ships, rather than leave them to the Revolutionaries.
And that's without counting on the siege of Toulon, where in their flight, the British were still able to burn French ships at the port of Toulon, before the arrival of Bonaparte.

Your surprise over nelson is startling. As a Brit the majority of what the school system teaches on the Napoleonic wars is through the exploits of admiral nelson, for he was as advantageous, smart and egotistical as Napoleon was on the continent. Plus his death in a epic battle basically made him a British legend. Obviously history is way more complex than the simple picture school paints, and in more recent years a lot of controversy has arisen due to his love life since he abandoned his wife for a Kardashian style celebrity and he was good friends with slave plantation owners (although his actual views on slavery are unknown). But he’s still a iconic figure and is probably as recognisable to the majority of brits as Washington is to America!

@m n Russian power has been exaggerated by the Cold War and Red Scare propaganda. It was only ever a threat post-WW2 and was never a major power on the scale of the likes of England, France, Spain, or a unified Germany before then. Austria-Hungary was on par with the Russian Empire, that's how much weaker Russia was than what most believe.

    • @xenotypos

"One CENTURY before" as you said, Russia by the end of the 18th century and in the early 19th century was one of the greatest powers in Europe with France and Britain, it was the zenith of Imperial Russia. The WORST time to invade them.
WW1 Russia was actually relatively weak and is vastly overestimated. They struggled to industrialize and it was way easier fighting Russia in 1900 than it was in 1800.
But after the Russian Revolution, Russian managed to (finally) industrialize completely, thus becoming very powerful in the 1930s. Hitler faced that very strong Russia: like Napoleon he has no choice but to fight Russia when Russia was at its best.
It's incomparable with Russia in the 1600s (seriously), or with Russia in 1922 which was devastated by the Civil War that happened as a result of the revolution, and thus couldn't fight properly.

@@xenotypos Haven't you heard of the Great Northern War (1700 - 1721)? Yes, Russia won that one, but with a humiliating defeat at first and the fact they were allied with Norway and Polish Lithuania, it comes as a surprised that Sweden manage to hold them off easily, at first (though I guess it's more that Sweden is op). I'm just saying this isn't the steam rolling machine Russia from ww2. Hell saying Napoleon attacking Russia at it's best seems pretty impressive for him, since he burn Moscow and Russia only defeated him using Scorch Earth Tactics. I'm not arguing against you, just explaining my comment.

Nah man, he wasn't short. The average height at the time was 170 cm, at his death he was recorded to be around 170 cm. He was called short because of various reasons:
-the british and french inch systems were similar, but a little different, meaning that reading that as equal Napoleon would've resulted shorter than he was. Brits knew that, but decided to do this propaganda joke thing where they called him a dwarf. Actually general Wellington was shorter than Napoleon
-his guards were selected to be over 190 cm, meaning that when he was with them he would've looked short. I am 172 cm ans got a 194 cm friend, in a pic where we're side by side I look like his stool
-when doing parades and stuff his already tall guards had muskets with sabers as bayonets. Imagine a 170 cm guy surrounded by 190 cm dudes with muskets on their shoulders that have swords fixed as bayonets. The optical effect is the one of a dwarf surrounded by giants

And thats a neon sign of napoleons stupidity.
To not understand that you cant make so many countries unhappy and poor by forbidding them to trade with their original trading partner (and being unable to take Britains place in trade) is a sign of stupidity. In the end, Englands economy was great (because it owned 1/4 of the world and taxed it) and european economy was in shambles. All because of *one* man
Instead of being smart and either letting it go or making new treaties with the european countries, he chose arrogance and brutality.

They're very much was a kind of old way of fighting that a lot of the kingdoms that Napoleon encountered stuck to. Later on, when it shows that they were learning from his tactics, it was reinventing warfare for them. The prussians, Russians, in austrians and everyone else that he faced had a centuries or even millennia old way of looking at warfare that was massively outdated. They had a sort of gentleman's way of looking at it, but Napoleon fought to win no matter what new strategies he could think of.

Napoleon wasn't just one of the greatest generals in human history, he also pioneered/encouraged a lot of innovations:
    1) Napoleonic Code, a French civil code of laws that modernised the civil laws of Europe, and influenced the civil laws of many countries around the world even to this day, like most of Latin America, the Middle East, European countries that was once under the French Empire like Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, etc., and their former colonies, even the state of Louisiana and the province of Quebec in Canada.
    2) He ended the remnants of feudalistic laws in France and enacted better administrative policies, centralising the government, creating more efficient administrative divisions that are still used today, like the French departments and communes.
    3) The invention of canned food, which Napoleon made a contest on who can best preserve food and make it easily carried by soldiers in their campaigns. Thus, the food in cans were created
    4) The creation of the Braille language started as means to secretly relay messages, because written messages can be intercepted and plans can be exposed. It was an innovative way of communicating, and it was initially created by a French Captain, Cpt Barbier, and was later developed by the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris by a brilliant teenager called Louis Braille.
    5) Napoleon's army discovered the Rosetta Stone in Egypt which is one of the most important archeological discoveries in history. It helped decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics, and helped the study of Ancient Egyptian and other ancient civilisations of that time.
    6) Modernised military organisation and tactics of that time, and his military organisation is still used today like regiments and corps, and the advancement in the military based on merit, not bloodline and and connections to nobility.

At the end they understand they were in the Russian lines, surrounded and outnumbered. An enemy officer came and ask him to surrender.
Lepic ansewered, designating his men: "look thoses faces, and tell me if it's look like they want to surrender".
Then he said to his soldiers : " Folks, we must today win or die, and there are 3 enemy lines we have to overthrow. Many of us will die ; but if even one of us could bring the information alive, the glory and honor of our flag will be saved ".
Then, his soldiers shouted : "Charge ! Charge ! And we shall pass ! "
They attack, and Lepic him self recereceived bayonets in legs, but at the end they won, and rejoint French lines.
Lepic was promoted by Napoleon himself.
