    Roman Punishments were a lot worse than Carthage later on. Like decimation for example - ten soldiers are selected and ordered to pull a pebble each out of the bag. The lucky guy who drew the black one was then beaten to death by the other nine.

      @darthrevan4933 2 роки тому +3

      In all fairness decimation was extremely rare like maybe less than a dozen examples across Roman history though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was used as a sort of or else threat and just not recorded when the troops fell into line

    The reason why rome was able to conquer so much is simply 1) determination they can ammas 500 000 soldiers, send them to a battle, all of them be killed and still not surrender for you to fully win a war against Rome you have too take over every single city
    2) they were able to take weapons and technology from their enemies and then also twink it a little bit and make it better they dint see a foreign invention and say "we shouldnt use this pagan BARBARIAN invention" like a lot of other peoples

      No only sometime , the Hebrews the elite priest and king had a doble standard , in public they were followers of the real God , in secret were corrupt , most people practice witchcraft, this is why you see that the first temple was build by Phoenician , Solomon brought baal priest , the people had very little loyalty , you can see this in the calf idol, this is why you shall have no others gods , as they had many , the gods or son of God were the fallen angels , in Jerusalem the valley of Hinom is were Jews sacrifice also children to baal , this happen often , also the temple had secret chamber to do witchcraft rituals , the priest who keep the system were occultist many of them .
      In the Old Testament the Jews did a sacrifice to a demon sending an animal to the desert . It was normal for them .
      By the way hell is real and Jesus is real too.

    Rome is such an interesting case study, it is fairly easily to understand why they were so successful, it was not just 1 thing but a combination of so many things that made Rome unique and so effective.
    It truly is an anomaly in history, we all today are a successor to Rome, the whole of western civilization wouldn't exist without Rome.
    It's always interesting to wonder how things would have turned out if Carthage won and eradicated the young roman republic, I love history and learning about pre history

    So it's interesting to note that there's some evidence that the Carthaginians didn't actually sacrifice their kids. Like ALL of their neighbors wrote about them "sacrificing" their kids by burning them in religious ceremonies, but...there are very few graves of kids who WEREN'T burned on the gods altars? Which means either the Carthaganians somehow learned how to stop kids from dying of natural causes or their neighbors didn't understand the difference between "human sacrifice" and "cremation of a body."

    Oh, and as for the insane luck in finding an intact quinquireme to copy the design from, think of it this way: that level of luck is nowhere near the whole "finding General Lee's battle plans rolled up with random cigars on the ground"-level of luck, in my opinion.

    • @vojtechlansky86
      @vojtechlansky86 Рік тому +2

      Its maybe even more lucky.... i mean the chances with the cigar are of course much smaller but in a case of the impact it has..... ye the plans were very usefull but it was one of many operation during the war.
      But copiing design of the one thing that the enemy have advatage above you... that gives you so much and not just in 1 battle or opperation but for the whole war and after. Like when it woudnt happen.. maybe the cartaginians could split Sicily and Apenin peninsula and Romans couldnt do anything, even when they could beat them on land easily... Carthage could use this advantage in many ways... but they lost it in the very beggining we can say.
      Romans caught up or even surpassed them in naval theathre and on land they were stronger.. so Carthage was at disadvantage the whole war and this way it was just matter of time how long it would take for the romans to win.

  • @Savaris96
    @Savaris96 2 роки тому +15

    Romes entire thing was Integration and Assimilation, first in warfare and later in culture, sure there were clear classes, like Romans, Italians and then basically everyone else, but unless you were a slave, you could make it far in the Roman Republic and later the Empire, ESPECIALLY in the military, and thus politics, if you managed to gain Roman Citizenship, which, if you were an accomplished Military Officer would have been pretty easy.
    But all big ancient empires were like that, including Carthage, as you can see in their army, they were willing to gain and utilise assets, they were just too stupid to properly use them,the whole "We are better, cause we are so civilized" only really started with Colonialism and then Imperialism, when a Tech Difference really started showing, pretty sure if Colombus and his men were greeted by weaponry similar to theirs, history would have played out entirely differently, since the idea of Superiority would have never cropped up, at least not in these extremes.

    Gotta remember that extreme cases of superstition often reigned supreme over common sense during the times of antiquity. People didn't understand meteorology or weather phenomena like we do in the modern day for example, so gods, deities, and other divine stuff were created and associated with elements of the world to help explain them in many early cultures, in the place of conventional science. And "insane" is putting it nicely regarding some pagan practices that the Romans assimilated over time, such as augury or what a haruspex does.
    And of course, to better understand why Rome loved war and expansion so much, the "make-as-much-glory-as-possible-within-your-short-term" explanation is one thing, but another explanation is the focus of their religious pantheon. Sure, they are in many respects a copypaste of the Greek gods, but thats just at surface level. While the top god for most Greeks would be Zeus, the top god for most Romans would be Mars, and he is very different from his Greek counterpart Ares in many fundamental ways, even presented with a very different mentality.

    Something to remember is that modern times are far more sensitized to death and violence. Likely most of the people you know died of aging diseases, as is the case with me. We have likely never seen someone die before our eyes. We live in societies where our waste is only there until we press a small lever. The list goes on. The average life expectancy now is 70+ in most countries. Then it ranged from 20-30. When death is all around you from birth you become desensitized to it, but the trauma also, well, traumatizes you. Compound this with a lack of knowledge availability (we all today stand on the shoulders of Giants) and you get a fundamentally different value set. We deal with death as the worst outcome, due to how late it is and how tragic. But if you are inured to death things like honor/virtue become more important to you than life.

    It's pretty rare for great military leaders like Hamilcar Barca to have equally talented or even better sons (Hannibal). Plenty of sons just suck at ruling a country or commanding troops because they were born into the easy life, but I guess Carthage losing in the First Punic War is what propped up Hannibal, who knows ?
    If Carthage won and we had a Second Punic War, Hannibal would be the downfall of Carthage.

    Rome is so strong because they were super modern.. They had new tactics and ideas that probably nobody had seen in the world. You must keep the time in mind. That's so Fucking long ago. Rome had a complete water system like that's so crazy..

      That they literally copied from other cultures. I'm not saying Rome wasn't an impressive empire but a lot of tactics and technology was copied off of other cultures

    • @frontgamet.v1892

      @@VSES-99293 Yeah.. In a time where "stealing" or imitating other cultures was considered weak.. It was quite modern for the Romans to recognize the good things in other cultures.. But they not only copied.. They improved it incredibly. That's one of the reasons why Rome is THE history today... When you think of strength or progress... Rome is always the first thing that comes to mind and conversation... Because that's how it is.

    One interesting things that Oversimplified didn't mention about the ending was that Hamilcar Barca didn't go back to Carthage after the war. Afterall, he basically saw the peace treaty as a betrayal of him and his men. He instead lead his mercenaries (who over the war had become to him rather than Carthaginian money) to form a settlement in spain. That settlement evolved into the city of Barcelona.

      Yeah but they could not destroy Rome. Rome managed to hang on even after loosing massive armies.
      In the end, the third punic, Rome came back swinging and wiped Carthage out of existence.

    The Spartans are overrated, largely thanks to Zack Snider. The Macedonians were far more successful against the Persians. Alexander the Great is mythic levels of legendary and his victories are studied to this day. Plus, people don't need to be greek, a historian, or watch a movie to recognize Alexander's name. Practically everyone, regardless of where they're from has heard it before, even if they don't know anything else about him.

    Honestly people doing horrible things for their religious or spiritual beliefs is a long lasting and still current problem. Animal sacrifice is still pretty common. And in Africa many people who have albinism are still kidnapped, dismembered, and their body parts sold for religious rituals and potions. Some families will even sell their albino children to these butchers. Even when they’re not being ritualistically slaughtered, they still face government and society discrimination.
    I think it was the 1700s when people started having conversations about slavery. The UK & France were the first countries to fully outlaw slavery. The last country to ban slavery was in the 1980s I believe, a west African country called Mauritania. However slavery wasn’t a punishable offense in Mauritania until ~2005. It’s believed that more anti-slavery protesters are jailed in Mauritania than enslavers. Heck even in America slavery is still an issue with an estimated 400,000 people being enslaved in US borders at any given time, many of which are illegal immigrants who were exploited by the very people that smuggled them into the country. I wished they taught slavery better in US schools, many Americans don’t understand how slavery is a global and still occurring problem.
    But since you hate the Romans so much. I recently started learning more about the history of my Irish/Scottish ancestry and the Picts, the indigenous people of the British isles, were able to defeat the Roman army during their Christianization of Europe. I don’t know if the Picts were the only group of people to do so, but outside of the Picts and the Barbarians (I believe were Goths) during the fall of rome I haven’t heard of anyone else.
