Napoleon was like 5’6” or a little taller. The French used different inches than the British and Americans, and in that measurement system he was 5’2” and that’s why people think he was short
the other very important factor was his nickname Petit Corporal. In French Petit represents a term of endearment and in context it referred to his willingness to get in the mud with his men, or more specifically to sight and range artillery pieces and micromanage them. Before he was a general that was his job and beyond everything else he had a natural affinity for it, and that was the job of the Corporal. So in English we hear it as the Little corporal. Another factor is that he often had his lifeguard, or Imperial Guard Old Guard, around him who were specifically selected for being super tall and physically imposing and on top of that wore very tall hats so in comparison he appeared short.
And a lot of English men in general were pretty damn tall for the time. Gotta get some use of those Viking genes that were splashed about from the 9th to the 11th centuries.
To kind of defend Benningsen's actions at Friedland: The Russians thought all they were dealing with was one french corps so they felt it was safe to bring their entire army accross. But once again, Napoleon reacted with his characteristic speed and all of a sudden they were dealing with a whole french army.
Theres also the attempt to speed up the initial crossing that resulted in all temporary bridges being built at friedland itself rather than at multiple points. Got the army across quicker but left only one route out.
Kinda sound like one of the last battle in the Franco-Prussian war, happend hunred years later. Where the Prussian was chasing a fleeding small French army, but miss comunication let to that Prussian army fighing a French forces 5 time larger. Althought the Prussian tactic win the engagement, they were getting bombarment by French Artillery in which a Prussian Calvary have to charge 1 km to slince them, half of that Calvary forces become casualties but it was a succesful change and turn the tide of the battle.
About to the swimming part: most of the fighters were conscripts, meaning their basic military training were only meant for receiving orders, killing, and recognizing signals by the war musicians.

I would love having them react to more history stuff! Y'all have a refreshing outlook and are willing to voice your thinking on stuff you aren't familiar with without being dismissive or overconfident. That's really the value I think lots of us like in history reactions is seeing someone else's face light up when you understand why the story is important or incredible. Being able to think through why something is improbable or revolutionary is very important to that. Extra credits, Kings and Generals, Epic History, or even Historia Civilis' wonderful stuff on Caesar and Rome. I feel like they would appreciate the Seminal Tragedy series, but if y'all are avoiding repeats I recommend the Julius Caesar series on Historia Civilis because it has few reactions but a very devoted fanbase of generally positive and invested people.
All the time while I've wondered why the British Fleet was always so powerful and notorious, and how they came to be so powerful, it never dawned on me until now that it was because England was an island and they knew at the time that the only route to England was to sail over the ocean. So it would make sense to focus so much time and resources on a Navy.
I never cease to be amused by how well being an actor prepares someone to think about being a soldier. Logistics is logistics, direction is direction, hurry up and wait is hurry up and wait, and griping is griping.
The thing with higher position beeing very dependent on connections and social status is actually widespread in almost every career path. For example, in the navy(at least in my country) if you are the son of a naval family(meaning most members of your family followed a career in the navy) then you were more likely to get a promotion or a favored position regardless of how qualified you are than someone who wasn't from a naval family.
In fact, Napoléon wasn't a dictator. He made many referenda during his reign and in the History, only De Gaulle will do the same thing. Moreover he were a fervent revolutionary and became Emperor of the French (not of France) after asked the people. And, despite the title of Emperor, the Republic kept : Article I of the 1804 Constitution "The integrity of the French Republic is guaranted by the Emperor himself". The Chant du Départ (another song written during the Revolution for the young French Republic as the Marseille by the way) was the anthem of France. When a country was conquered and he placed himself (without annex the country) or a member of his family to the throne , he wrote a Constitution for it, free and liberal laws. He became one of the symbols of the French Revolution and that's why all Europe declared war, they were afraid of the Revolutionary Republican Imperial France (and that today, the Anglo-Saxons (majority English (I don't speak about all British just English)) still consider he was a dictator). I add he declared an unique war (against Russia) Finally, I finish with the following question : if he was really a dictator, why is he in the actual Polish anthem ? Why Russians admirate him while their country was the one which had the most suffered between 1804 and 1814 ? Why Germans (he was Protector of the Rhine people and placed some brothers on some thrones, Italians (he was King of the Italians (in fact the Italian Kingdom was only Northern Italy), Latium was part of France and one of his brothers was King of the Sicilians ("former" Kingdom of the Two Sicilies)), even he don't admirate the Emperor, thanks him to have spread the ideas of the French Revolution ?

Yes Napoleon was an average height for the time roughly 5’ 7”. The French system of measurement at the time was inches if I remember right, but they weren’t the same size French inches are larger. so when the brits found his clothing measurements they basically decided it would be great propaganda to have Napoleon be tiny.
Napoleon was not 5'6 he was 5'8 or 5'9 very normal but the british slandered him and made up that he was a short man. Also another reason why Napoleons armies were soo good is because he chose his commanders based on Merit and skill The other countries only chose the nobility to lead and they were beyond moronic. At the end what won them the war was lit the most annoying strategy in the world they just ran and ran and ran while using their combined numbers to attack anyone that wasnt napoleon, that and Britain was lit throwing money at them all to keep Europe at War to enrich themselves further from the profit they get exporting and trading with waring nations. Europe was being ruled by lit man children with no idea they were being lit used
11:48 the truth is that yes he was but not because people back then were little but because he wasn't anywhere near as shot as almost everyone thinks and all media depicts him at, he was what today might be called slightly below average male height for a French but since he was always surrounded by his elite troops who among other requirements were selected for being physically strong and imposing, like 6ft or a little higher. Also the french used different measurements
Weather could often turn the tides of victory. A small army can win against a larger if the wind is blowing sand in their eyes. They'd be confused on how to retreat as well. Fun fact: it's pretty hard to do warfare when you're blinded and confused by the weather.
His 3rd tactic if you pay attention is used by some germans with steel chariots in WW2 against France. Tactic created by WW2 general before the war. xD The more you know.

And yes, he was average height for the time. Unfortunately for him, his biggest enemies were the British, many of whom were really tall thanks to all the Northern European genetics in their blood. (Not all of them, though. Admiral Nelson was a tiny guy, even shorter than Napoleon, but Arthur Wellesley, the soon to be Duke of Wellington, was a massive dude at over 6'.)
Most of rich people were nobility, but not all nobility was rich. Minor nobility could just as well have wealth more or less equal to a middle class citizen. In Poland, where almost 10% of the population were nobility, a lot of them were barely better off than your average peasant. Being a noble had more to do with the achievements of your ancestors rather than your wealth. Your family could be nobility just because your peasant great-grandfather was granted a title after some heroic deeds during a battle or something. It doesn't suddenly make you rich :p

The coalition wars almost appear like crusades to overthrow Napoleon.
And, in a way, they were proto-World Wars.
A crusade is a holy war that it started because of religious reasons so the coalition wars are nothing like the crusades.
