also the torque specifications are important. Someone somewhere when the car was designed did a lot of math to be sure they are correct and then after years someone user like us going to the service and in the service someone "mechanic" with a lot of "knowledge" decide to tighten the bolt by sense. Really annoyed by this type of "mechanics". Thank to this guy for doing the things the way they should be done!
Thanks for sharing this. Quick question - do you have video on replacing front lower (rear) control arm as well. And are the torque settings around the same for the front lower (rear side) control arm?
Wow I can't believe my Genesis g80 has the same exact suspension set up. Thought I had warped rotors from vibration and shudder but low and behold it was bad control arm bushings, and the ball joint was really bad.
Great video. I’m looking to change my control arms for my Audi A4 b8 but not sure where should I order them from. Can you recommend a specific website where I can get them. Thank you.
Great video! ive got an super annoying clunking sound on my 2015 a4 allroad from left front suspension. Ive changed top strut bearing, swaybar link, checked all rubber bearings but cant find the problem. Its when i go over small uneven stuffs it feels like something is bouncing super quick and short, i feel it in my left leg that its 100% coming from the suspension... maybe control arms should be replaced
Tip, you really want to be careful dragging the inner bolt under the rack gator, if you split it and get water in it in the future on a drive, you can say good night to the rack and at 2k for a new one or roughly 1k for a second hand one, you don't want to damage that thin bit of plastic
Thx for this valuable info I was concerned this would be a hard job to do but it's simple and easy to do (gotta give it to the engineer who designed this sh easy to access)
Awesome video, but I did both on my S5 and it’s not as easy as it looks lol. Took me about 3 hours each side because the damn suspension would move forward when control arm is off.
Put the control arm in balljoint first and install the holding bolt so it doesn't slip back out. Do not tighten it yet. Then use a mallet or hammer to get it in position in the rear where it connects to the subframe. Then use a pin punch to line the holes up. Leave the punch in place. Put the bolt in from the other side and tap through with a hammer. You will see as the bolt displaces the punch as in pushes it back out the other side that your life will be much easier. You can also use another floor jack under the suspension to reposition it as needed.
Excellent tutorial. Just wondering my local indie changed my lower rearward control arm but tightened it while the suspension was still jacked up. Its been a while now (6+months) with the corona virus and all. was wondering if its worth loosening it and tightening it properly or just leave it and hope it doesnt fail early.
If he did not torque the bolts with the suspension at ride height, you can have that corrected when you take your car in for an alignment. They should be able to loosen and retorque the bolts with the car on the alignment rack. Not doing this step { Compressing the suspension. } before tightening the bolts to spec will cause premature bushing wear. If you are a DIY type of person, you can just do what he did in the video with jack stands and floor jacks. But this is important to do and should not be skipped. Or you'll just be doing this job again in a month or two.
@@snapdragogon69 Just to update, I ended up having to replace it again. The bushing was totally worn and the car started making knocking noises shortly after my initial comment it think. The garage refused to repair and claimed he’d been doing that for years and never had a problem.

But in my case ball joint was fine and control arms bushings was bad. I replaced all together as car had over 200 000 km. I guess you have same problem.
Yes you will need to remove the control arm to replace the ball joint. If the joint is worn, good chance both ball joint and control arm are on their way out. Best to replace both at the same time, both sides and save yourself the misery of having to do this job repeatedly.
I had to beat the crap out of the lower arm joint to get it in.. also switch the very left tripplestar bolt so the head is facing right, it will make your life easier next time. Last tip is to beat the heatsield from the way with hammer handle.
