Today we are jumping back into the e30 build and there are multiple issues we need to address. Ever since we swapped steering racks, the car has had an odd set of behaviors that really shouldn’t be there. Firstly, the car lacks power steering. The rack also seems to have issues self-centering. The more I do to this car the more I seem to uncover that needs doing. A never ending project...

I feel so bad I did not ask the question about modifying the firewall in the steering rack swap video. I do have two e30’s and one is an air bag car. I had to do the firewall mod for steering rack swap. Make sure to tighten the steering shaft nut where the spline shaft slides. ( right by the firewall) it tends to get loose. I don’t know if you have an LSD, but 3.73 is pretty good. Racing diffs have rebuilt kit for lsd for 40% lockout

Next time you have to work under the knee bolster or steering wheel, just remove the seat. By far the simplest way to get some room. Keep Pushing.
I totally would've assumed alignment first before anything. Maybe if it sorta felt like it was binding it'd clue me into something else, but initially I just kept thinking, it's an alignment issue. Nice work.

The z3 rack is a bit problematic and twitchy

I have standard e30 rack, and most of the times is so heavy, never tried to let go the wheel to see if center it self, but I also have some leakings, but since sometimes I have power steering and sometimes I dont I might need to check if the same thing as you.

Likely the car will get wrapped in the short term a real paint restoration down the line. The color isn't too common so I wouldn't want to pay for it to be done cheaply. I'd rather wait until I can afford to do it right.
I had the same issue when I went over to a Z3 rack. Similar, But what I had was memory steer. When I would do a full turn left or right, once I was straight the steering wheel would have a tilt to the side I was turning. So if I was turning left once I was straight the steering wheel would be towards the left, once driving straight for a little bit the steering wheel would be back to center. My strut bearings were the issue. I didn’t feel this with the old oem rack, but going Z3 heighten the issue I’m sure I had with OEM rack already.

That's next on the list. The alignment is part of the issue for sure, but fixing the mechanical issue first made sense haha
The failure to return to center, did it have it after the swap and before the alignment?
NVM. You fixed it. I'm having a failure to return to center on a 2014 320i after I replaced the broken control arms but I think the electric power steering rack suffered damage during the collision, even though it is not noticeable. Don't get rid of that car! Change the color to white if you can.

No problem, as they are now, they will be reduceding caster witch won't help the "self centring" issue and will make the turn in feeling less direct. Love the videos 👌
my honest opinion, throw that bmw away and get a e46 waay spicier content(bmw content) audi 4 content is fire
E46 are def more popular on youtube😅 my goal is to pick up all the generations of these cars so an e36 and e46 and more will def happen in the future
