    this is a great guide for folks starting out with insect glaive. I've exclusively used it since MH4U, my first entry in the series, so I was curious if I would learn anything from this that I didn't already know. the only thing I can think of is the fact that diving wyvern gets a damage bonus from the jumping combos. I'll have to give that a shot. I would have also mentioned how some kincencts do blunt damage, giving you access to easy stuns by marking the head and going for bonks, especially on bugs with charge bonuses. (that and the fact that getting all 3 at once sets all 3 on one standardized timer, so if you just sit on 2 of them with your bug out in the air holding the 3rd until its stamina naturally runs out, you can effectively hold onto your red bonus for much longer than if you just grabbed all 3 right away.)

  • @pingdragonify
    @pingdragonify 2 роки тому +13

    Just to take note, aerial combat may look good on paper, but in practise it is pretty bad 80% of the time.
    1. You have to land all 3 copters + diving wyvern to deal the full dmg of the combo, given how much monsters move around, and the distance travelled by you, it is pretty hard to pull it off even on a good day.
    2. You are extremely vulnerable while you are in the air. Monsters have lateral move sets now and some of them hit extremely hard, it is extremely easy to get carted if you are not careful when you spam coptering. You can use SB vault, but that would eat up one wirebug for a slight distance coverage, imho it is not worth it. It is still better to save up for a wirebug fall when you get hit.
    3. You have to worry about stamina management, getting all 3 aerial combos eats a ton of stamina, if you are not careful it will be hard to dodge monster attacks once you land. Especially when diving wyvern has a few lag frames after you land (again making you extremely vulnerable) + little to no stamina to dodge out of the way.
    4. Sharpness depletion is another issue. On a realistic hunt, at the most you are able to do up to 2 aerial combos + diving wyvern, i would say ard 60%+ of the time you will be hitting bad hit-zones on the monster. Given how many hits you deal in a single copter, a lot of sharpness are going to waste because of this.
    There is a reason most IG speed runners barely use copter in their runs (they spam the living shit out of tornado slash). They often use it as a repositioning tool rather than using it as intended + diving wyvern are mostly used from the ground instead of chaining from copter. Hope this helps any players that wants to maximize their dps of this beloved weapon!

    • @KingRobRool
      @KingRobRool  2 роки тому +8

      Thanks for you input! It definitely takes a lot of practice to get good at it. If we were talking MH World I would definitely focus more on grounded combat but I really think diving wyvern makes it worth practising.
      This guide is designed for people to have fun and not so much max dps. But I'm sure there will be those that are looking for that kind of opinion too so thanks for sharing 🙂

      im main insect glaive, in world i kill fatalis with my insect glaive, in rise i dont have problems with the sharpness, and stamina was a issue just in the first half. in second half and rise i have more than enoght for atlest 2 full combos, also you can recover stamina between jumps, if you jump use a choper then whe you finish in the little jump you recover stamina before use the other choper, and just repeat is not just spam the bottom, and for sharpness in general the monster flee to the other area before i need to resharp, the bad part about that is in small and mid wyvern are hard to full combo in air, but hey i use insect glaive sience mh4 maybe the experiecne help me ot that and in rise is even easier

      best strats I know of for maintaining essences is to grab red and one other, but hold off on grabbing the third for about 30 seconds or so, and then hit the monster to collect the third with the bug, but don't bring it back to you, just let its stamina naturally run out, and come back on its own. when you collect all 3, the buff you get is on a static timer that starts from the moment you get all 3, so if you just wait until one of the other two are about to run out before grabbing the third, it will give you the highest up time with the lowest maintenance. the other strat is to intentionally not go for all 3, and instead just mark the head and go for repeated bug headshots now and then. this works best with blunt damage bugs with a charge effect, allowing you to go for KO hits, as well as keep your red topped off for much longer.

    I do want to try and learn this weapon. It's the only weapon I haven't really messed around with. As a Lance main, I do like long pointy weapons :D just the micromanagement of a lot of weapons is a little tedious but I think the Glaive would be fun. Just one quick question, I don't need build specifics really but, how is the weapon for sharpness management? Would you go Polish or Touch? Would you go Raw or Ele? Status? Being a rapid hit weapon similar to DB I figured ele would be good considering you have access to weak points other weapons don't really benefit from.

    • @KingRobRool
      @KingRobRool  2 роки тому

      Yeah I never really go raw for IG, usually status or elemental. As for sharpness, in Rise I usually just go speed sharpening since its so easy to fit in and is really quick. That's just my opinion though.

      @@KingRobRool I usually run a couple speed sharpening on every build. With the shortcut to sharpen with any weapon unsheathed it's super nice with the radial quick menu whetstone. Doesn't work with the standard Y button menu. I'll have to throw together a couple Glaive builds before Sunbreak, see how I like it. silk bug recharge so fast that you're better off spamming air combos non-stop which objectively does more DPS than ground combos. That's a real bummer for me because there's no big ground finisher in sunbreak that uses up your silk bugs either which would have made ground-glaive builds viable. I love the glaive as a weapon, but I hate how it's implemented in this game.

      You need to have the red extract first! This whole guide is based on the assumption that you have it. I did mention that in the intro 🤭

    Used insect glaive for 5 years on both rise and world and I just learned that 3 extracts gets you lvl 5 earplugs

      World didn't give earplugs for that so you're not completely wigging out haha. Pretty sure gen u did as well but can't remember if 4u did. Probably yes?

      I was a dual blade main on 4u and didn't try the new weapon. Picked the glaive because of Nergigante and fell in love with it ever since

    • @KingRobRool
      @KingRobRool  2 роки тому

      If what you mean is getting 2 extracts, I explained at the start of the video that it's because I'm using a dual colour kinsect. You can buy them at the blacksmith. If you haven't unlocked them yet you may need to advance the story further.

    why do none of these guides actually show the practicality of the moves IN COMBAT. how tf am I supposed to know I should be using aerial vs ground attacks on different monsters, how to know when to dodge and the like, if all you do is show basic combos in a safe environment?
    I practiced my combos and the like, figured out the moveset, but literally none of that translates into how to attain high dps in practical combat, how to dodge actual hits, etc. All it translates is me fucking around in the air, getting 1 hit, landing on the ground and tanking a tailwhip.

    • @KingRobRool
      @KingRobRool  Рік тому

      It's a quick guide that's only meant to show the basics. Plenty of combat and long guides out there mate. Check out Ratatoskr for some good insect glaive vids if you need.
