  • Kite Party 17 at Huntington Beach, north of the Pier on March 9th and 10th of 2019. Glenn and Cherie Mitchell joined a gathering of renowned kite makers and flyers to paint the sky with color. There were many boutique kites on display during both days and the weather was quite good. It was was of those wonderful times when the only excuse for not flying a kite was not having one.
Special thanks to Dave Shenkman for organizing and commissioning event T-Shorts. The city of Huntington Beach is appreciated for supporting the event as is the County for Life Guard support.
Without a doubt, kiting in general and the Kite Party in particular bring out our better Nature. If you haven't yet decided, I recommend joining the American Kiteflyers Association. It is a world wide organization.

What a wonderful event, Glenn, and a lot of famous names in your list of participants. Good to see George Emmons among them - it seems only yesterday he was visiting here, although it was back in November. You were clearly among the early arrivals - looks as if Cherie is doing well with the Eagle. Best part, there were hundreds of real kites, not just big PLK line laundry. My favourite was probably Ron Gibian's seahorse.

Hi Jim, it was a real treat to see so many art kites. The wind turned about 140 degrees during the day. Ron's seahorse flew quite well, glued to the sky. The ground displays were colorful if not hungry for territory. Time well spent!

Wonderful..wonderful kites! I loved that colorful Delta at 1:32...and that Star at 3:54...Oh heck I liked them all but was really fond of those with the broad, long and colorful tails. The simple heart kite...all of them beautiful works of art. One day I hope to be as successful in my fabrications. Cherie looks quite accomplished with her bird ..so smooth! Good for you all! That looked like a stunning day!

Pricilla, you have good taste. There were many good quality commercial kites and of course the boutique stuff. If you love the beauty of flowing shimmering organza, try that for a kite tail!

Ok Glenn, you and Jim Nichols are really making me hate our winter even more here..lol we have been hit with everything imaginable here the last several months, and none of it was good! What a fantastic weekend you had. All of those kite trains in the air at once looked fantastic. I have to say, the Snicker bar was my favorite here. Never seen that one before. Lovin’ it!

    • @JimNicholls

Ken, on second viewing, the Snickers Bar ties with the Seahorse as my favourite - that bar is really unusual!

As someone who appreciates single line kites the variety and standard of those flying at this event was wonderful, so many types from the traditional to the innovative all with brilliant artwork, I am jealous !! thank you for doing a great job of pointing a camera at them so as we can all enjoy this exceptional spectacle.

There are those who pay dearly for their art kites and then hoard them. It is nice to see these art kites flown. I'm glad to share the beauty with those, like you who understand.

@@PanyingPilot I started kite flying ( late 70's ! help this seems so long ago !! ) in the days before there were a lot of artwork kites available to buy or were there any inflatable line laundry, the most special kites at a kite festival were those single line kites created by skilled enthusiast, so my formative kite flying years were coloured by aspirations to emulate these enthusiast, something i have never quite achieved ( Far too many hobbies and interests, Far too little time...) So to see a kite festival with some many wonderful single line kites is marvelous, dare i say it ? better than a display of line laundry !
