Still doesn't excuse the fact that he was terrified of an innocent baby who couldn't lift up a single weapon and decided to kill him.

I would rather have been an enemy of the Gods than kill an innocent baby.
You may call me a fool if you wish, but unless a baby is growing ginormous horns out of its head and walking on the ceiling while speaking in a dead or ancient language, I have no reason to fear or wish ill-will on an infant.
Only a coward would fear an infant who could barely wield a weapon. Also before you bring up the argument of the prophecy again, should a child or a person be punished for a crime that has yet to even be committed?
A prophecy is oftentimes fulfilled by those who try to prevent it.

When The horse and the infant ends, there's silence. Odysseus goes to look at the baby and the infant starts crying, then Odysseus' fatherly instincts kick in and he starts singing this song's first tune. The song truly begins, Odysseus picks the baby up, cradling him and only letting go when he kills the infant.

I’m not extremely familiar with at least this part of his story, but after reading the comments, I love this song. I extremely love how it seems he’s talking to the child, reassuring him that he’s not gonna hurt him. How could he hurt him, he’s “just a man.”
But at the same time during this verse, he’s justifying himself, explaining to himself why he needs to do this.
During the next verse, he’s questioning himself, wondering what lengths he’s really willing to go to, is he really gonna go through with this. Can a man really do this and still be called a man.
At the end, he succumbs to what is asked of him, and has justified himself in his eyes. After all, everyone makes mistakes… and he is “just a man”

@@sudanemamimikiki1527 uh, if a dude with supposedly absolute knowledge came to me and said "you HAVE to kill this kid or he'll kill your whole family" while also showing you visions of your murdered wife (in the "you can say goodbye to Penelope (echoes)" bit) I would call that coercion. At least narrative-wise: the narrative absolves Odysseus of guilt even if he himself was guilty because we're told he knew with absolute certainty that Asthyanax would kill his wife and son. Heck, he keeps trying to propose alternatives (raising him himself, taking him far away and so on) and Zeus shoots down every single one, going over and over "nope sorry murder is the only option".
Meanwhile in the original version it was his pride, like many things, that pushed him to kill Asthyanax, not his fear. Agamemnon was basically heckling him because he didn't consider him a real soldier since he killed with wit more often than a sword (which is rich coming from Agamemnon, considering the entire Achilles situation; pot meet kettle, but I digress). He does posit the theory that he'll come back as an avenger, but dude is not a Seer or a god. Odysseus (Ulysses at this point) chucks the baby down the wall because he essentially got told he wouldn't

i love "when does a man become a monster" for MANY reasons, but one is how it applies to both Odysseys AND the child he is about to throw off of a wall. it applies to Odysseys because he is questioning how much is he willing to go to accomplish what he has been set out to do "will these actions haunt my days? every man ive slain? is the price i play endless pain?" that line is him wondering if he can go on knowing how many he has killed and how his actions will haunt him forever, he then tries to justify his actions looking at them as him doing whatever is necessary to get back home and how he has no power over what fate has in store for him "im just a man". he questions "when does a man become a monster" this can be him saying that he very well may shift to cruel and "a monster" if he continues down this path but doesn't know where the line is drawn.
    OR
it can be him talking about Astyanax eventually growing up into a man and deciding to take revenge for what happened and thus becoming the monster and Odysseys like in the other interpretation doesn't know where the line is drawn and so he has to kill the baby in order to ensure something like that never happens.
doesn't matter which interpretation it all ends with him dropping the child as he begs for forgiveness once more repeating "im just a man" in a futile attempt of fighting against the immense soul crushing guilt

How I wish he actually raised him as his own...
He will never stop to be haunted by this... He's not a bad man at heart 😢
Before listening to this, I only knew the version of the Little Iliad, where it's Neoptolemus who kills Astyanax, because he's the son of the man whose brother killed his father Achilles. And also because he was described as a heartless beast, built to kill and therefore completely capable to kill a baby just like that. And somehow, this made me feel a little better in my grieving for Astyanax, because I've always admired Odysseus and never I would have thought he could do something like that, for ruthless that he's proved able to be.
Now I will never be able to look up at him like before

I love this musical and am absolutely fascinated by it in both a compositional & historical context. A story about gods, monsters, and men. A fantastical tale about the human condition with compelling characers & narrative that has been passed down through oral tradition, stories, and other forms of media down the river of time for over 2000 years. A story that survived well after the hallmarks of it's culture and time stretched back into antiquity into the persent day, and it's it has foud its way into the minds of mankind yet again. An absolutely killer example of good storytelling standing not just the test of decades or centuries, but millenia.

Having spent my life making a bit of a game out of puzzling out the story behind songs with my sister, the Story behind this one hit me like a freight train. From the first note, you can FEEL how much Odysseus doesn't want to kill this innocent child, but is forced by Agamemnon to do just that. The man who just wants to go home to his Wife and Son, forced to murder a child no older than his own was the day he left to fight in some egomaniac's war on the far side of their world. You know that his instincts as a Father to protect Hector's son are battling with his desire for the War to end so he can go home to his own boy. Heartbreaking from start to finish and I can't help but Love it.

I look into your eyes and I
think back to the son of mine.
You’re as old as he was
    when I left for war.
    Will these actions
    haunt my days?
    Every man I’ve slain?
Is the price I pay endless pain?
    Close your eyes
    and spare yourself the view.
    How could I hurt you?
    I’m just a man
    who’s trying to go home.
Even after all the years away
    from what I’ve known.
    I’m just a man
    who’s fighting for his life.
Deep down I would trade the
world to see my son and wife.
    I’m just a man.
    But when does a comet
    become a meteor?
    When does a candle
    become a blaze?
    When does a man
    become a monster?
    When does a ripple
    become a tidal wave?
    When does the reason
    become the blame?
    When does a man
    become a monster?
    When does a comet
    become a meteor?
    When does a candle
    become a blaze?
    (Forgive me)
    When does a man

Interesting, the new version seems much more gentle, like a lullaby (in the first half at least), very fitting for an infant… It’s deeply sad and emotional in a very heartbreaking way. More mournful. Meanwhile the original sounds more anguished, intense, less polished, especially with the voice cracks. More expressive of the horror at his own monstrosity. I honestly love both versions, can’t pick one over the other!! It’s just fun to observe.

"I'm just a man" that sentence holds so much weight. It's like "I'm just a man, I'm just /one man/, i cannot possibly bear this burden". And also "I'm just a man", as in, he's convincing himself that this is was evitable, that he, a man, is just going to do what he was told, because he has been taught no better and also "im just a man" trying desperately to convince himself he is no monster but knowing deep down he's become something else by taking this infants life. No longer a man, but a monster.

In the Iliad the Greeks fear that Hector's only son, Astyanax, will grow up to avenge his father and decide to have Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles, (or in some versions, Odysseus is the killer) throw him off the city walls. In EPIC, Zeus forces Odysseus to be the one to kill Astyanax.

Zeus comes down and warns Odysseus that if he does not end the infant prince of Troy, the infant will grow up and want revenge, and will succeed as Odysseus will be too old at the time to fight back, but Odysseus is struggling, and also, the "When does a man become a monster" has a double meaning, it means both that Odysseus will become a monster if he kills an infant, but the infant will become a monster if he doesn't

@@CORBIN2263YT There's a lot of double meanings. "When does the reason become the blame" applies to both Odysseus stooping so low to kill a child, even if he has a good reason, and the child that will try to avenge Troy will just follow the endless cycle of revenge.

At least I hope he made it quick and clean, that he swiftly cut his little throat or something, because throwing him down the, oh so Tall walls of Troy, letting his final moments to be full of terror and then possibly leaving him to wait for death in pure agony (in case the death, while inevitable was not instant) is just pure cruelty. Unnecessary cruelty.

    • @Lithiel
      @Lithiel Рік тому +5

and yet... that's how it happened. the only thing I can imagine as to why he did it like this in this story is 1. he was sure the impact would be an instant death, 2. was to show it to his men and everyone; claiming this death and not hiding he was the one who does it. because otherwise then anyone could say any rando did it. But he's not hiding he's the one shouldering this act alone to his enemies and allies.
But in the end, there's no way to know why it was written that way.
