Window roll down fix. Someone replaced the window regulator before. The 996 and 986 had the same window regulators, theres a bump stop preventing your drivers side window from going down all the way. Remove the first bump stop(for the 986) by removing the top screw/bracket on the window regulator. Good luck!

For the buttons on the wheel there are some specific parts you need to make the wiring work, it's pretty simple, if you have the right parts. For gauges you can get a pod that sits on the top of the steering column, or put them in the center console. For power steering look into an electric hydraulic pump and mount it the frunk, the MR-S pump is a popular one.

Yes! Always fill the oil filter when you can. I warched a video where they show the difference in time it takes to build the oil pressure when you fill it and when you don't fill it. It definitely builds pressure up to normal presser much faster when you fill it first.
As a part German guy (live in Holland but my family dates from Germany) I really love this car! Wunderbarlich!! Und einfach perfekt! Greetings from the Netherlands and keep going!
you can connect the fan relay ground to the PCM #42 from blue connector, might have to add the programing when you get around to it, but then you can control the fans at whatever temp you desire
Hey Alex.... I bought a bundle this past summer. I don't know how I've survived without the wash mitt and oversized towels. The quality is by far the best I've owned so far and I've been driving for 50 years now!! Great channel, great content and great products. Thank you.
This is going to be a great toy once you get the tune and a few other issues ironed out. But PLEASE get some rear tires wide enough for those wheels, that stretch is killing me! LOL
Agree... also not sure what kind of person buys $10,000 forged 3 piece wheels and then fits shitty stretched Toyos, hopefully Alex puts some decent rubber on at the same time - not sure what he's going to do though as with that offset, the only way a tyre isn't going to rub is with that stupid stretch - which is probably why they did it.
@@justinmurphy2227 Yeah, tyre manufacturers typically have a minimum and maximum rim width that a specific tyre width/profile is supposed to work within. When you go with too narrow a tyre, as is clearly the case here, you compromise the design of both the bead and the sidewall - meaning the tyre will not be working within its engineered specifications. Generally a stretch like this will cause the car to have significantly less grip than it should as it will affect the contact patch, will contribute to a very poor ride quality as the sidewall flex will be basically gone, and may even cause the tyre bead to unseat or some other failure point - it's both unsafe and reduces performance. Of course they are shitty Toyo tyres so they aren't much good to start off with.
The oil filter fill: If it was necessary all oil filters would be in a position that allows you to do it. Some filter locations force you to turn the filter on its side to install. The 1st Gen Raptor comes to mind. All the oil you put in it would dump out while navigating it over the cross member. I also do it when I can, but not always. I really enjoy your channel. You are a clean freak, and so am I. Lol
It's a benefit of having an LS1 then I guess. Mine with 160k likes to burn a quart every couple of months, so the more I can get in the system, the better, lol.
@@trashbandit2449Yeah that's true. One time I put almost a quart of additive in it, then put 6 quarts in, forgetting to lower the amount of oil. Pressure was fine, and never had any issues. Had close to 7 in the system. I read on some old LS1Tech threads that some people even run up to 7 in certain situations.
You absolutely need to wire the fans to the LS ECU. That ECU should already have fan control built into it as it's from an f-body. The wiring is very easy to do and then you can have full control of fan speed and temperature setting not to mention you can compensate the idle when the fans are commanded on so you don't get that stumble when the load of the fans hit the charging system.
@@ryanlatondress8835 maybe someone had already modified the ECU as vats was off. But mph limiter was still set at 98 when I got it. But I have a summit 4 core with 16" spal fan and I added the relay and fuse but the setting was already there in hptuners for 2 speed fan. On and off temp and overrun for hot shut downs. I'm still new to the LS tuning so forgive me if explaining it wrong.
Alex, you need to ASAP change the Oil Pan and Pickup on that LS. Ask why Tyler Hoover blew his up... Since the engine orientation is flipped, under hard acceleration oil doesn't reach the pickup
I think Alex just further cemented why I love my C5 Z06 and will keep it - it is raw, has no assists (when you want) and is just an experience. Tracks like a beast too! New vehicles are losing that appeal very quickly if not completely lost already.
The hot start problem is caused by the starter solenoid getting hot and needing more current than the tiny wire coming from the starter switch can provide. Back in the 'old days' we'd mount a Ford solenoid near the starter but away from the header and run the starter wire to it...then direct 12V from the battery to that solenoid which then sends full 12V to the starter when engaged.
Hey Alex! About the oil filter pre-fill... for me it depends on the car. On my Impala the filter is at 90 degrees, so a big no. On my 'Vette, it sits pointing up so that's a big yes for pre-filling.
I recently saw a video over on Lake Speed Jr's channel, demonstrating that pre-filling the oil filter is really better for the engine. been doing it myself for YEARS.. You're doing it right, Alex.
Keep the manual steering. It gives you the ultimate connection to the road. Just make sure to get the car moving before you try to turn the wheel. You get used to it. This would make a great track weapon. Get it out at Road America.
Wow this is awesome what a surprise Alex a video on Wednesday this is making my day for sure it's rainy in Spokane and boring nothing to do super happy to see you posted a video today keep up the great work man you always do great videos and great content
Awesome car Alex and what a great deal. I've had a few Porsche's over the years and loved them all. I have always wanted to have an LS swapped 914. The handling of that chasis (I had a '76 2.0 back in the day) with the power of an LS would be so much fun.
I like the LS, im an old school porsche/VolksWagen mechanic from my early years building my own drag car and building engines for my VW buddies. I say keep the LS, it sounds awesome! And i absolutely love porsche cars and Old air cooled VWs.
Not gonna lie I was a little hesitant getting into this build but this video was so satisfying seeing you get it into shape so easily. Seems like a great car and congrats getting it for so cheap that makes it feel so much better. Doesn’t sting like the rust on the DeLorean 😜
I think fans should be on constant + since the coolant keeps heating up even though you've shut the engine off. Have you noticed that sometimes fans are running even after you shut the engine? There is a reason for that, but that's just my 2 cents on this topic. On my project car I wired the fans with constant + from the battery and the switch is doing the rest.
for such simple setup, fan never ran with constant +12. if the fan were controlled by DME then yes, constant +12 used. DME controlled fan is usually timed under 1 minute with engine off and it's only when extra cooling really needed. otherwise, fan went off right away
It only makes sense to run the fans on a constant 12 to cool after u shut off if you have a electric water pump so the pum and the fans would run when the engine stops with a manual water pump it wouldn't make sence to have the fans running after the engine turned off because the hot coolant would be sitting still in the engine
@@denislavdoynov. The stock cooling fans on my 2006 VZ 3.6 litre Holden Commodore often keep running for exactly a minute even after I switch the engine off, hop out, & lock it! I'm not sure if it has an electric water pump, but I think it just runs off the engine belts. As one of youse said, it's not much use keeping the fans running after switching off if the water pump isn't running!
@nevillegoddard4966 Good to see another fellow Aussie on here! The majority of Holden Commodore engines (VN, VS, VR, VT, VY, VZ, VE, and possibly the VF) use a serpentine belt that runs the auxiliaries of the engine. The alternator, water pump, power steering, ac compressor, etc. I do love the fact that instead of having multiple belts to run the necessary engine auxiliaries, like in a transverse mounted 4 cylinder. You have one long belt (hence why it's called a serpentine belt) to do the job. Definitely makes replacing them easier too 😂
@ @ThatMetalheadguy666 Gidday mate same ere ay! So the water pump's driven by the serpentine belt ay? Riight! So what's going on with the 1 minute fan timer after I switch her off then? She seems stock, then what's up with GMH Straya then? I mean it's only for a minute; no biggy really, but it doesn't make sense! Apart from that I love my VZ, made in Victoria! Well, she's a bit thirsty, at 25 mpg (9.4litres/100km or 10.6km/litre). My very first car with air conditioning! She purrs like a kitten! No timing chain rattle probs. I did the pcv Vale mod & installed an oil 'catchcan', so I'm real pleased!
That is a super nice car and deserves all the love you give it and more. Definitely a track car and would love to see you compete with it. Can’t wait to see the new exhaust and tuning process. I look forward to some massive burn outs and extreme corner carving. The car has massive potential.
I actually like the 996, always have. I also like the whole vibe of this car including the color and the wide body and of course the LS BUT one detail ruins the looks and that is the rear tires. They're not wide enough for the rim and the wheel is sticking out too far. Not sure if there's spacers on there but wider tire and a bit less spaced would make a world of difference. Front rear and profile shots are brutal on this thing but front 3/4 and all you see is that wheel lip sticking out that takes away all it's brutish force. Love the project and great you're enjoying it - f* the haters - Porsche is worse than Ferrari when it come to the Purists 😂
To each their own I guess. Since the LS1 engine was not really meant for cars like this Porsche 996 with a rear engine setup. Space is just super tight and no wonder the starter motor heatsoaked with the exhaust pipes being literally next to it without any heat shielding. I wouldn't do it personally, but hey, still excited about possible solutions to these kinds of problems.
The noise and harsh ride would do me in. I'm not 15 anymore. I like quiet, smooth cars. I love Porsches, I've owned a 911 and a 928S and there's not a chance I would ever be interested in an abomination like this. Buy a Corvette if you want something with an angry sounding LS (I've owned 3 vettes too, including a '72 454 4spd roadster).
For the starter the best thing would be to fab up a thin metal heat shield that has an insulating layer of air all around it, exactly like an OEM heat shield. Also these look so much better with the rear bumperettes removed like yours has been!
Heat shield will fix it. I had the same issue with an 84 cj that had the 4.3 vortex swap. I kept getting stranded because the starter would get heat soaked. Shield fixed it.
I used to work for one of the top engine builders in the country (hemis) and he always primed the oil filters...always. Also, I completely agree with doing a fresh oil change with either a new car or salvage car rebuild. Then, you can be certain that nothing is scratching or gunking up the engine. I was thinking that those plugs don't look like they have many miles on them. Interesting that you were once an MB tech. With that big cam, made certain to keep the timing in check. Another good reason for a tune.
The Porsche purist thing I get, but you didn’t swap it and decided to fix it and make it right. No issues with that, but I would never do it to a car with a stock and working engine as you would devalue it immediately.
The thing is, one of these base model 996 cars aren't worth much do if you need a big engine repair, an LS swap is a great option. It doesn't need to have a huge cam like this car. It can be a nice, smooth LS that compliments the car well.
Sometimes you buy a car for something other than the resale value. For something less than the cost of a used Honda CR-V, Matt has a car that he will enjoy for years, superb performance and great reliability, at a fraction of the maintenance cost of a stock Porsche 996. (Just ask me how I know about Porsche maintenance...)
"Olé" is a Brazilian word. Don't know if this build had any Brazilians working on it, but basically is what soccer fans shout when they see a nice dribble on a match. Love the channel, keep rocking! Cheers from Brazil!
The LS swapped Porsche is awesome! It's a solid mod for an aging Porsche that would otherwise probably end up in the parts part of a scrapyard. That truck at 33:44 would fit right in here in San Antonio TX. The people here will drive anything, and load them down with junk like that too 😂 it's kind of embarrassing when you live here
I had a new1979 Trans Am with the 400 4 speed, and after a year or two, I started having starter problems the dealer couldn't figure out. I learned that when stopping to gas up, a lot of times the car had a hard time starting back up, but if I slid under and tapped the starter a bit with a small hammer, it would engaged when I tried starting again. We read in a Corvette club publication (way before the world was opened up with computers) that switching the spring in my starter solenoid to the spring used in the starter on the Corvette would fix the weak spring issue in the Trans Am. Did the swap and never had an issue again! Your problem could be as simple as that.
Wednesday surprises with LSC are the best! 🚗💨 Great to see such detailed attention to the 911 project. The oil pan query by @Slyder42 is spot on - oil starvation in aggressive turns is a real challenge. Any thoughts on that, Alex? Also, echoing @austinjenkins5357 on the intake solution - tight turns need tight solutions! The link to the first 911 video by @LegitStreetCars is a gem, a perfect throwback to where it all began.

So, after being a U.S. only auto owner for all my life I became fed up with the boring domestic offerings. (I’m a Pontiac guy so I have my 02 CETA and an 09 Solstice that I both bought brand new) We tried the new JL Wrangler and it let us down so we traded it in on our first Porsche that we ordered to spec, a 2024 Macan T. Now, this experience with Porsche got me thinking maybe I should get a 718 or older 911, but most of my knowledge is from tinkering with my domestics and was kind of worried about the German powertrains, but now…after watching your vids and realizing that I could possibly find a 911 that would be perfect for me if it has an LS1 swap…oh man, it got the juices flowing! Thank you, Alex, for buying this car and spot lighting it on your channel. It’s badass!
Pro Tip, when you remove one of those splices, (dont use them they are terrible) tag the wire so when something stops working 5 years later its more obvious. also, consider recoating the wire with vinyl like tool dip before you tape it, tape leaves a gap for air and moisture to get to the wire and corrode it.
Fair doos Alex your a top guy mate love your videos and love the fact that you keep it all in house and it’s a family channel. Keep up the amazing content.
Regarding filling the oil filter with oil before you put back on, sometimes you just can't. If the oil filter sits at an angle sideways you know in the back side or on the side of an engine and it's not set up to capture the oil, you could not possibly fill it without spilling all the oil before you put it back.
Alex, I love your channel, you are a master of your craft. With that being said, I’d love to see more content of you enjoying your cars after they are finished. Maybe some rollers? Anyway, thanks for the excellent content.
To see what the oil filter has collected. You need to press the outer smaller holes with small screw driver. As the oil goes from edge to center. The plastic behind those holes is flowback valve. Dirt is behind it.
The starter on my 914 used to do the same thing. The trick, turn the key and wait a few seconds until you hear the starter engage. Or, wrap it with insulation.
My take on the cooling fans- use the LS ecu to control the factory Porsche fans. It's 2 ground outputs (low and high speeds). Use 3 relays and you can wire them in series for low and full 12v to both for high. I could explain the diagram on here but way too lengthy. Just need 3 5 pin Bosch style relays
I remember looking at the wide body cars and marveling at the skill involved in modifying the sheet metal to work for the application…now you can screw kiddy pools on and call them wide bodies…I miss the old ways. Still a cool toy though!

I’m a mobile mechanic. We primarily work on fleet vehicles. Vehicles that get the crap beat out of them their entire lives. I never pre fill oil filters. Just oil the o-ring. I’ve never had an issue. Not saying my way is right. At least with modern motors, it’s personal preference I think.
I’ve got a ‘99 Carerra 2. I don’t think it’s weak at all. I’ve had 3 Corvettes, BMW’s, Range Rover Supercharged & I don’t find the 996 to be lacking. I’m a lover of the LS, don’t get me wrong. You’re downplaying a great setup on the 911, though.

MR2 Spyder power steering system. It's hydro-electric and can be tucked in spots and have hoses custom made to the rack. Also, get rid of all the NRG junk. It's cheaply made and seats, seat rail, and steering wheels are considered safety items. Recaros would go with the European Porsche, Sparco, as well as other known seats and rails would be best. This comment will spark hate, and that's okay. Love what you do here, Alex. Watching you get me motivated while I work on my own stuff.

It's got the biggest cam could stuff in a 5.3 with stock displacement. Tbss intake and 92mm tb, 1 7/8" longtube with 3" x pipe and 3" all the way back. It's gnarly loud. Just swapped from the Vette regulated filter to an adjustable fpr and have some 80# injectors I'm about to put a centrifugal supercharger on. Should be fun. It avgs around 205°f in 90° ambient regardless of sitting in traffic for long periods. But also has room for a giant summit 4 core and 16" spal fan. Have a gen 4 pan on it but usually run an extra 1/2 quart for sloshing. Also has a ford 8.8 31 spline rear with 3.73.
Put in on hp tuners, put the idle speed at about 850 rpm, add 2-4 % to the idle air and play with the timing and it’ll idle pretty decent.. I had to do it when I swapped the cam in my 5.3.

Yes! Always fill the oil filter when you can. I warched a video where they show the difference in time it takes to build the oil pressure when you fill it and when you don't fill it. It definitely builds pressure up to normal presser much faster when you fill it first.
Pro wrench here, ALWAYS fill the filter as best you can, obviously horizontal applications would take much less, but any is beneficial...
This is one of my fav channels now. No drama. No bragging. Learn stuff. Good clean fun.
LOL
So are the tires actually under tension since they installed like this?
Just trying to learn so thank you in advance!
Agree... also not sure what kind of person buys $10,000 forged 3 piece wheels and then fits shitty stretched Toyos, hopefully Alex puts some decent rubber on at the same time - not sure what he's going to do though as with that offset, the only way a tyre isn't going to rub is with that stupid stretch - which is probably why they did it.
Funny when a 315 tire is too narrow, huh? But, it needs a 345 or 355 on there.
He needs to change wheels to something more normal. At least 2-3'' narrower and smaller. Sell those expensive death traps.
Alex are you taking the car to the next level??? LS motor is much better and reliable than the one was there.
Lol
Ya my filter goes in upside down so....
It's a benefit of having an LS1 then I guess. Mine with 160k likes to burn a quart every couple of months, so the more I can get in the system, the better, lol.
dude the film left over from the old oil would cover you for the time it takes to fill a filter but each to there own if you can do it why not 👍
@@solidtenpindoesn't change the amount going in the system, full is full. You can always add a little extra when filling oil to be a little higher
With hp tuners even a p01 truck PCM has fan speed control.
@@ogfromutube9649 I believe to make that that work you need to do a segment swap, that's the way it is with EFI live.
@@ogfromutube9649 it takes 3 relays to make a 2 speed fan
As usual, well diagnosed and fixed Alex - you are a clever man and an inspiration to us home garage hacks 😊
Alex, you pour out oil on BLACK paper so reflective metal flakes are easier seen. The Panning for gold pan color is black for this reason.
I had an '04 C5 ZO6, yellow, and I regret selling that car. Amazing machine, and sounded great all the time.
u are on the right path Alex...remember that Hoovie blew 2 engines b4 making it work😂😂😂😂
Alex redoing and cleaning up wiring is always satisfying to see!
I totally agree with you I have a 2000 Honda s2000 and I love how it handles. There is something about older 90’s-2000’s cars!! Love it!! 🏎️
Here's the first 911 video! ua-cam.com/video/43YgXjEYYLk/v-deo.html
If you just had a friendly passer-by you could have push started the car. I guess that's Chicago for ya. J/K. Have a great day yourself.
Hey Alex! About the oil filter pre-fill... for me it depends on the car. On my Impala the filter is at 90 degrees, so a big no. On my 'Vette, it sits pointing up so that's a big yes for pre-filling.
Should put a cool exhaust on that thing with a merge pipe of some kinda, Id be very excited to see what that engine does on the dyno.
I recently saw a video over on Lake Speed Jr's channel, demonstrating that pre-filling the oil filter is really better for the engine. been doing it myself for YEARS..
You're doing it right, Alex.
What do you do when the fikter is upside down or at 90 degree? Or what about when it's a cartridge?
@@Blackhawkae69 No clue. I've personally never run into that..
Thanks for watching!
Awesome car Alex and what a great deal. I've had a few Porsche's over the years and loved them all. I have always wanted to have an LS swapped 914. The handling of that chasis (I had a '76 2.0 back in the day) with the power of an LS would be so much fun.
Love it! These LS swap videos you're currently making are my favorite!
Hoovie tracked his LS 996 and blew the engine pretty much immediately. They're not set up for track use out of the box - oil starvation.
very well done mate as per usual, personally I couldn't fault anything you do your expertise is beyond most of us always entertaining cheers
Thank you! This is the updated version of my dream car! I'd go with a louder vibrant color. It's a Porsche! Work of art!
I've seen several LS swapped cars on UA-cam. This is the only one I've really liked.
@@LegitStreetCars ah. That’s fair. I haven’t checked values on the base 996 in a long time.
i'd much rather have an LS than the shitty old engine that would have been in this.
What's your point you wouldn't wide-body one and put a giant ass wing on it like it used to have either to increase its value.
Hey Alex and LSC fam, hope you're all having a good week!
Thanks! You too!
I definitely think you stole it for $27,000. I always prefill my oil filters as well.👍
"Olé" is a Brazilian word.
I get it... I wouldn't touch a numbers matching classic muscle car, but I'd restomod a classic that's a recovery/rebuild. It's fine to be a purist, just don't be a snob. Cars are for enjoyment people. Great vid Alex!
My favorite channel ❤
Fair doos Alex your a top guy mate love your videos and love the fact that you keep it all in house and it’s a family channel. Keep up the amazing content.
Regarding filling the oil filter with oil before you put back on, sometimes you just can't. If the oil filter sits at an angle sideways you know in the back side or on the side of an engine and it's not set up to capture the oil, you could not possibly fill it without spilling all the oil before you put it back.
One of my dream cars. I love the car the way it is. Color is great it’s different that’s what makes it great.
Great thing about manuals is the bump start option. Saved me many times.
I remember looking at the wide body cars and marveling at the skill involved in modifying the sheet metal to work for the application…now you can screw kiddy pools on and call them wide bodies…I miss the old ways. Still a cool toy though!
Here's the latest 911 video! ua-cam.com/video/5T8PXhozrCI/v-deo.htmlsi=wff23_N-Ig0rHrsM
I have a 2001 ZO6 with an L.S.1 5.7. It runs at about 223 degrees. I asked my mechanic about this and he said" L.S.1's run kinds hot and it's normal. Aloha from sunny Hawaii Braddah!
Love the project!!!! I LS swapped a 2001 911 about a year and a half ago. I sold it on Mod & miles. I think you bid on it!!! It was a really fun car but I'm to old & fat to get in and out of it. LOL!!! I bought an electric Vauxhall Power Steering Pump and installed it in the "Frunk" It worked great!!!. keep up the Great Projects!!!
Always fill the new filter.
Since you asked....I prefill if the filter position allows. Some don't.
Love your work mate, best automotive channel out atm. Keep up the great work 💪
I’m a mobile mechanic.
Looking like a super nice car - can't wait to see the engine tuned properly now.
I used to work at an oil change place and I knew someone that loved how I smelled cuz her grandpa used to own a shop and I guess it was a nostalgic smell for her
ROFL ! ! Absolutely fantastic episode.
Your Enthusiasm is SO contagious !
Love it !
I fill my filter also. You don’t want to extend the dry start. New oil does not have contaminants.
For the longest time I absolutely love swapped porches… weather it’s an LS, a Honda K-Series….. the V8 is sick but I always wanted a k swapped Porsche with a tiny turbo with internal wastegate and make a super quiet, like silent exhaust, and personally balance the rotating assembly very well and use a sick dampener so I can rev that baby out…. Lol someday
Love the LS Swap. Kinda why I have a 928. Nothing like great German engineering and a V8.
Love these mid week vids man! Keep that up with the longer awesome sat morning vids!
Best video! Seeing you so happy driving the car I can live my driving life vicariously. Lol.
Z-1 motorsports makes a screw on funnel that works a treat and you don’t have to worry about the funnel deciding to exit stage left in the middle of filling your car with oil. Something to look into for sure
I know you’ve bought a lot of different cars and all of them are pretty cool for many different reasons. But, I think the Porsche would be the most fun to drive from an HP seat of your pants bring the thunder experience 😂 this was so much fun to watch. Thanks Alex 👍🏻🫵🏻
Backfire under the bridge. Perfect timing.
for the power steering i’d recommend getting a electric power steering pump from something like a late 2000s volvo s40
My starter heat soaks on my LS swapped Volvo 240. Uses a Nissan 300z RS5R30A so uses the Nissan starter which is about 3/4" from the longtube headers lol. It'll turn a lil slow when hot but always starts!
I put some aluminum heat shielding around the exhaust and reflective heat tape on the starter.
I also used to do roadside assistance with a 163 ml . Still work for Mercedes too haha. Love the videos and all the cars you have !
Put in on hp tuners, put the idle speed at about 850 rpm, add 2-4 % to the idle air and play with the timing and it’ll idle pretty decent.. I had to do it when I swapped the cam in my 5.3.
At first I thought it was silly, but the more I look at that car, the more I like it. Tone down the interior and up the taste, and it would be mint.
"Adam ant" ium was a uk singer in the uk back in the day. Just making my way through the old vids I've not seen 🎉
