I have to say I was one of the few, very fortunate people to have a brand new Grand National in 1986 while in college. Drove it every day to school. I believe it was purchased in August of 1986. Mine was a digital dash, and electronic climate control model. i cannot express the absolute joy it was to have one of these back at that exact period in time when absolutely NO ONE knew what it was. The pleasure of surprising (then new) Mustang and C4 Corvette owners with that thing is something that will never happen again. No one believed it was a Buick, either, since Buick Regals were the kind of car your grandpa drove around. Most thought it was a Monte Carlo. So many stories. I traded my 86 for a new 87 about a year later and it had the analog dash + manual AC...but by that time the cat was out of the bag and way too many people knew about them.

That oil in every cylinder onto of the pistons could just be the old pre storage trick of putting a little oil down the sparkplug holes before you store the car to minimize corrosion and keep it all lubricated, some older folks swear by it even just for 2-3 month winter storage on their classics.

Fuel filters are the first thing i would have changed out, especially with possible ten year old gas. GNs came with power seats, locks, and windows as options. They did not have power mirrors. Some had a remote joystick for the passenger side, located to the right of the steering wheel.
A common upgrade is to replace the power master braking system with vacuum boosted brakes. You’ll need the master cylinder, brake booster, and brake pedal to perform the swap.
Vacuum leaks are the enemy of these cars and can cause serious engine damage if not addressed. Fire up your smoke tester when you get back home.
The fuel pressure was around 22 psi at 36:39. Factory spec is 25-35psi at idle with vac line on and 34-43 KOEO.
Correct on the dielectric grease comments at 40:25. Your fuel pump relay has the grey connector plug.
Good fuel and resetting your TPS/IAC was my first thought to resolve the issue.
Most of us with factory ECMs use a scanmaster to see engine diag numbers while running. Strongly recommend buying one.
You can use the Orange wire connected to the positive battery cable as the way to reset the ECM.
1:15:35 you likely need bulbs or a flasher relay. There are two of these in our cars below the steering column. One for hazards and the other for turn sigs.
Great video! They are reliable cars, it just takes research and patience.

He was looking for a real GN with no rust or accident damage and didn't care too much about the rest as long as the original engine and trans was in the car so he could rebuild it all eventually. If Alex does a good job restoring the car, he will turn that $16k into $40k. That GN was absolutely worth the $16k he paid for it and then some.

I worked for a Buick dealer in 80’s and 90’s . The 3.8 emblems on the hood break easily, the bumper fillers crack front and back . Under the hood crank and cam sensors , the transmissions ( 200 4r ) are not built to take all the power the 3.8-7 puts out . Keep the rear differential serviced . Ignition module under coil pack . The rear main seal usually leaks on all t-types and grand nationals ( most were replaced with a one piece aftermarket seal under warranty) . I took one out on a test drive after rear main was replaced back in the late 80’s and mechanic told me to “get it hot “ I got pulled over for doing 97mph in a 55 ( got a warning I knew the State Trooper) ! Cool cars but they need lots of TLC

One of my dream cars. Almost had an 87 I was going to trade my Audi for in Chicago. On the test drive we got rear ended by someone with no insurance. Car was totalled. Owner was pissed but said it wasn't my fault and could have happened to him or the next guy. Now the prices are high and I'm kicking myself for not buying one when you could get them under $10,000 but I was young back then and couldn't easily afford that. Now they go for $40-70K or more depending on miles and condition. I've always preferred the solid roof because the T-tops flex.
Damn $16K is a steal in this market. I noticed the name Duttweiler on the intercooler inlet. That's the Kenny Duttweiler neck upgrade. I'm like you, I'd be ecstatic to have my own GN but I would have came with my truck and a U-Haul trailer and then take it home and replace all those old sensors and fuel pump and all that sh!t.

Although late to this video, a car my parents let me drive to school had a weird issue one day. The car was a 1966 Buick Special convertible and was very rusty. When I drove if I hit exactly 35mph the engine would die until 15mph. I had to drive to my high school and back on 55mph roads at 33-34mph about 10 miles each way. Ask my dad what it was and he said FUEL FILTER. Changed it in the highwind on our driveway in 45F temp (in NE Wisconsin). Froze my fingers with the gas dumping on my hands. That was indeed the issue and the car ran fine afterward. So yes, I can say with certainty I was saying fuel filter while you diagnosed it, although when I got it off you could see the issue, with a lot of rust in the filter that would clog the flow.

I find that very hard to believe. I mean, the F40 and 959 we’re the quickest and fastest cars of the 1980s. But you still have the Countach 5000, Ferrari GTO, Testarossa.
You could argue that the corvette Callaway twin turbo was a dealer installed option. And my money is a 930 Turbo bests it in acceleration as well.

I did intend to mean American* production car. Also fastest doesn't mean top speed necessarily, but if you want to be technical then it was the 3rd quickest American production car, but in 1987 it (GNX) was the quickest car period. All quicker cars came after 1987!

I had a 88 Chevy Nova, with the Toyota L4 engine, loved it, but I learned something about those old eighties cars... the computers are not well shielded from RF. I had an oversized battery because I have always been into radio. Back then I had a CB installed under the dash. To mount it I had to finagle my own mounting system, The ashtray was basically the bottom piece of the center part of the dash, very little room to mount the radio and I could not mount the bracket directly to the dash or it prevented the ashtray from opening. I happened to be in Radio Shack and they had a bracket for adding after market stereo equipment like an EQ or tape deck (Cassette or eight track) under the dash it was two part one mounted to the radio one mounted to the underside of the dash. It was wide enough to mount across the ashtray, but would crush the ashtray preventing its use. I went to the hardware store and got longer screw but still had no standoffs. I remembered some old copper tubing, and I had extra nuts for the screws. I put the the screws through the mount , tighten down the bolt to the mount then added another nut to each bolt height needed. I cut the copper tubing forced it over the nut on the mount using the second nut and a washer, the tubing was about 1/2 an inch long. The tubing went over the nut on the mount but had to be forced which made if hex shaped I wiggled it off and I flopped it and inserted the the second nut into it and did it again. This made the copper tubing with the nuts in each end act as a spacer. I put the screws through the dash all was good. The mount I used had more connections than needed as I only used two speaker terminal, and the power terminals. The speaker terminal were for the PA, the two halves of the mount could be separated just slide one side out. I would detach the antenna by unscrewing it slide the radio out, store it in the glove box. When I started using the radio I discovered that at a light the car would die when I talked on the radio. Maybe drawing too much current? No. I connect another battery to the radio and disconnected it from the car's battery. Again I was at the light and the car died when I talked. How is that possible? The radio is on it's own battery. I crawl under the dash, that is when I realized the back of radio was near the car's computer. I was hoping I would not need to reposition the radio. I tried relocating where the antenna was routed to take it further from the computer. Next light, and I talked again... This time no issues. So I reconnected the radio to the car batter and put the other battery back in the garage. That radio was peaked and clipped to max efficiency. 100% modulation without a power Mic, and planned to never use one, The radio was putting out 8 watts on AM twice what it should yet was not over heating, on side band over 20 watts. I have talked to people all over and the radio always good to them. Thank you Igor for the work on that radio, though likely you will never see this thank you, and have possibly gone to the Great Gig in the Sky. Just goes to show computer from the eighties were not as reliable and could be effected by thing not even attached to the cars electrical system.

One of my good friend's dad designed that engine for Buick. He went to our autos class to try and help diagnose an issue on a student's (then new) Grand Nash that the dealer couldn't fix, and he disconnected a bunch of electronics and wires and just yanked them off, and the car turned on and ran perfectly. Those ECU's with that back silicone crap were made to melt inside so you'd have to replace it endlessly.

And test your throttle body..

On my 99 C5 Vette, I would have bet the farm that the Alt pulley was gone on it because of the squealing it was making (I had even sprayed some silicone spray and it went away for a second but came back!) I had bought a belt and finally put it on after sitting in my car for a week and that fixed it straight away.

couple of things....the back bumper strip shouldn't have a white stripe. if you can see the converter it is missing the transmission shield. the car is running bad because there is a module under the coil pack that is bad and get AC Delco plugs to replace those autolite plugs. that uncovered port that you pointed out needs to be left uncovered or you will not get full boost. it also looks like the injectors are bluetop aftermarket injectors. the car is a pegleg 3.42:1 (g87 on the rpo tag a g80 g87 would be positive traction 3.42). you also have an aftermarket exhaust. you also need to check the inlet and the outlet on the intercooler. if they are the same size then the intercooler has been modified

also check the transmission valve body for a tag that says BFR. you need a BFR valve to be able to shift properly under full boost

All accurate!! 💯🎯 But I can't quite figure out the first G code. Does it say GQ1? And if so what is that? I can't find it in the listings anywhere! 🤔

That marking on the piston seems to have said 0.50. Looks like 0.50mm oversized pistons. That and the crosshatching being that good leads me to believe the bottom end was taken apart and rebuilt at some point.

Actually, those do indeed look like OE pistons. I wonder if it had oversized OE pistons? I don't see those markings on the factory pistons from doing a quick Google search, but to my knowledge many OEMs put markings on oversized pistons.

Usually when you rebuild a engine you’ll bore it out .30/.50

    • @thatguywillt
      @thatguywillt 2 роки тому

@@317Media Well kinda. It would be .030" (which would be .75mm) or .50mm (.020"). So it can't be both. .030" is more likely as that used to be the first oversize for a long time on American motors. On newer metric US motors they usually start at .25mm/.010" these days.

@@thatguywillt my 460 is bored .030 but only because it was rebuilt. But I meant to say it’s usually bored .030 on rebuilds

I just found this channel last night and it was the 2001 Pontiac Transam WS6 that is dark blue which caught my attention while strolling through other mechanic related channels. I like his approach to finding and repairing decently affordable cars that are desirable as well. Great format without alot of the flash and smash now here's your prize type mentality. Definitely has a relatable feel and reminds me of a few cars from my past that I purchased to fix up in a tasteful way.

First and last video watch for me. It's stunning to me that you didn't suspect a fuel issue especially with old fuel. Nothing LEGIT about your skills. You have a hunt and peck approach without real problem solving skills.
