- James Follett is an author and screenwriter. Follett became a full-time fiction writer in 1976, after resigning from contract work as a technical writer for the British Ministry of Defence. He has since written over 20 novels, several television plays, and many radio dramas.

Can I thank you for uploading this play. I listened to this live back in the early seventies in my early teens and recorded it on a C120 so missed the end. It was the first play I really listened too and got me into a life of enjoyment with these. I recorded many and still have hours of cassette tape in the loft of similar productions. I never knew the title of this play so could never find it to see how the ending went and today probably nearly 40 years later here it is so many many thanks. I didn’t realise it was a James Follett who I am a fan of.

I suspect it will take me a week to listen to this, it has put me to sleep 3 times now, and not in a bad way.
Brilliant drama. I also keep falling asleep then it runs to the end and I have to go back and find my place, done it about five times now! To those who think the story unlikely I say it makes for a great listen. Truth is said to be stranger than fiction why not stretch credulity,

You sound like me. I tend to go to bed with a play on, and rarely hear it all -- the dulcet tones of BBC actors, whatever generation, seem to do the necessary to put me to sleep! But if I have been intrigued by the start, I do go back and finish them, usually with my breakfast -- though sometimes it takes me several tries to finish something.
Loved this one -- finishing it now.
Sounds a negative non recommendation. There are gripping tales and books that none can put down. Ive often read long into the night with wishing a book did not end where it did. If we sleep 8 hrs that equates to choosing unconsciousness for 1/3 of our lives!

Thanks to the Internet with BBC-Sounds & uploaders like this channel on UA-cam, it's only recently that I've been able to listen to any of James Follett's skilled script-writing efforts!
First-class drama, and when it was uploaded the author was still alive. I do hope he appreciated the extra exposure of his excellent work.

Really enjoyed this, took me away from the thousands of people sadly dying from covid here in England. I'm furloughed till at least the middle of Feb and from tonight's news from Boris it cud be a lot longer so these audio drama's are an absolute lifeline to myself and everyone else!!! Please guys n girls stay in and stay safe!!!

I'm a big mystery fan I read a bunch usually a book a day I've wanted to try reading him but always thought they might be too spy oriented for my tastes any suggestions on what or where to start with his books for a mystery buff?

I loved the story...Took me away from this COVID nightmare in which we are all in...It makes you think what’s going on in this Nutty world 👴🏻
Wow, this is the world’s worst captain. A hapless sadsack that doesn’t take charge or make a plan, throws up his hands complaining about his luck, then whimpers about others not respecting him. An engine explodes, he does nothing to find out why. A crewmember is missing and others have to initiate a search for her. Passengers ask him for approval of their crazy plan- but instead of stopping them, he passes the buck to his crew. Of course, in the end he gets drunk and is promoted.
And the industry hasnt changed much

good god that was awful, the airline captain started as a jerk, then turned useless when the American wanted to play 1:26:55 hero. Even if they'd been right about Kamerov, the diplomatic fallout would have been a nightmare.

This is pretty old. Stewardess?---when was the last time anyone used that term? Threaded projectors that jam? Ditching in the ocean really stretches credibility.
I suppose if ur going down in the ocean you'd rather do anything to survive, so ditching anywhere is the number one priority, but u have to remember this was the 70's things were totally different!!! It was enjoyable but sounds like u didn't like it?
Actually I did enjoy listening to it. Of course, there are dated aspects--- minor, for the most part. It did come across as having a lot of potential for a film from that era, a story that today's visual effects tools might make easier to fully realize. The main thing that struck me were questions about an ocean landing, something that has little successful precedent. In fact, I don't think I've ever heard of one, though I imagine smaller planes mayve been able to do that successfully during WWII. I just don't know. All the news I've ever heard about planes failing above the ocean seem to end in total catastrophe and the complete loss of life. However, to state again, I enjoyed it. A good tale/another tense and detailed story from Follet.

@@simonmcgrath4112 Thanks, tho I didn't feel an apology was necessarily due...tho anytime politeness appears on the internet I am thrilled and appreciative. I'm a big fan of Follet's LIGHT OF A THOUSAND SUNS (hope I got that correct). That was the ultimate nail-bitter, and so filled with nuanced technical detail along with the realistic drama. Good stuff indeed!
